Earthbound (known as Mother 2 in Japan) is coming to North America and Europe, and will be available for the Wii U Virtual Console before the end of the year, Nintendo have announced.

An actual release date will be shared at a later date, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata stated in a Nintendo Direct presentation.

    Haha, it finally happened.

  • Shane Guidaboni

Awesome! But why only Wii U?! :( I want a portable version! Come on, Nintendo! I sadly won’t be getting this because I’m not getting a Wii U for an SNES game. Still, this is great news.

    • $36598391

They haven’t said whether it’s the SNES or gba version
I hope it’s not the GBA version because the sound is inferior to the SNES version

      • Sean ‘Geg’ Reddie

It’ll be the SNES version. The Japanese one was, and the GBA version includes Mother 1 which this one doesn’t.

        • $36598391

Oh man I totally forgot about that, being able to play Mother 1 would be awesome
and we still would need Mother 3 as well
Nintendo should just make a Mother Collection/Earthbound Collection on the 3DS
          Mother/Earthbound Zero
          Mother 2/Earthbound
          Mother 3/Earthbound 3

Nintendo can easily translate the three games and do something like this

    • Vesperion

Yeah i know right? They could get it out to more people if it’s a 3DS download as well

    • Because we should be honestly thankful we’re even getting the Wii U version, which will have off-TV play regardless.

I mean, geeze, we’ve only been waiting years for any sort of rerelease of this in America and Europe…!

      • Shane Guidaboni

You mean you’ve been waiting for a virtual console release? We’ve had this game for years already. Did you not see my “awesome” and “still great news”, or read my comment in general? I’m excited that we’re getting the virtual console release, but I’m disappointed that virtual console games are often not cross console. It makes no sense. I’m not buying a $350 console to play an eshop game that I’ve already played, but I would gladly pay to have it on my 3DS.

        • Considering copies of the game go for upwards of $200, and have been hovering around that and above at least $160 for years now, yeah, I’ve been waiting for a VC release for quite a long time!

I know you said it’s great news, but I feel like people shouldn’t be too quick to demand for a portable version, much as I would love the same. Show the demand by getting the Wii U version first so Nintendo knows it’ll sell this time!

          • Shane Guidaboni

I can’t get the Wii U version , and many others can’t as well. I simply can’t afford it. That’s why I want this 3DS e-shop version, and would pay for that. Like I have said, I would support this, IF I could. Until then, I’ll just have to kindly support on the sidelines.

          • Well, maybe with the push of sales for the Wii U version first, a 3DS version can be considered? More likely than not, first they’d have to actually bring SNES VC games to the 3DS, because it’s unlikely we’ll get the GBA version of it. Nintendo seems rather dead set on keeping GBA VC games for the 3DS to the Ambassador Program, thus far.

Personally I’d rather have a port of all three of the games on one cart, but I’ll take the victories I’m handed.

As a note, yes, I understand you can’t afford it, but on that same line, why I’m happy for the Wii U version is the same level– I reasonably do not want to put down $200+ for one game after all, and rather spend that kind of money for a console I’ll be playing multiple other games on. :<

          • $36598391

I read somewhere that Nintendo was planning on adding GBA games on the Wii U shop, it was a while ago so don’t remember the site

          • Yeah, they confirmed GBA games are coming again to the Wii U, but I’m speaking pretty specifically about the 3DS.

          • $36598391

I’ve been waiting for a good reason to get a Wii U and this is it

        • $36598391

I wish the Wii would get Earthbound on it’s virtual console as well

          • Funnily, Japan didn’t even get Mother 2 on VC until the Wii U copy. Maybe there was some sort of issue in terms of putting it onto the Wii software? Who knows. Though they did get the GBA port, Nintendo doesn’t seem to entirely mind that point so much since they released the original Kirby Super Star for VC, after Super Star Ultra had already come out.

  • $36598391

    OH MY GOD!

  • KHSoraKeyBlade

Words cannot describe how happy I am.

  • Vesperion

“MOTHER” of GOD! this is “2” much for me to take in all at once

    • DesmaX

      Are you Chairman Shuji Ikutsuki?

  • Eric Harris

I hear ya would like a portable version. It’s because Nintendo’s insistance of keeping us tethered why I just play them on my ipod and android.

    • $36598391

      Piracy fail!

  • idrawrobots

I am so happy. I never thought this day would come.

  • Solomon_Kano

  • You don’t know how happy I am that I won’t be spending $200 on a copy of this now.

    • $36598391

I got the SNES version from when I was younger but I wasn’t into hardcore collecting back then so I don’t have the box or manual anymore

      • I used to own a copy of the SNES version too when I was much younger, but at one point, I was forced to sell my SNES and the games that went with it.

It was my biggest regret in terms of video gaming, and I’ve been attempting to absolve for such a sin since then.

        • $36598391

You were forced to? I did that of my own will and I’ve regretted it for years now

          • Yeah, I was given the choice between keeping the PS2 or the SNES, and at the time, I prioritized actually being able to have a DVD player in my room. So I guess I had some will about it, but it was only out of logic at the time. I still would’ve wanted to keep both. :(

    • Also, wanna put this into some hilarious perspective: It took even Japan ten years to get another rerelease of this game, since the GBA version came out in 2003 (which is now far far out of print), and they only just got the Wii U one in 2013. They had it like almost half as bad as we did! Near literally! (we got the game in 1995 in America and haven’t seen it since, haha.)

And this is not mentioning Europe either, who literally never got the game, so. Congrats, Europe!

  • Brandonmkii

    Pretty cool for earthbound fans.

  • Zonic505

I think Nintendo’s picture from their Twitter says it best:

I’m amazed that Nintendo actually went through the trouble of dealing with all the music licensing issues this game has. It must have taken a LOT of time and money to make this release possible.

Regardless, this is incredible news. This year has been full of (pleasant) suprises in terms of localisations/local releases, hasn’t it?

    • I think the massive push on a place where they have no excuse to not see it helped a bit, but the fact that they’re not giving a specific estimate is probably because of all of the licensing issues and red tape.

    • Spirit Macardi

The music licensing issue has always been purely speculative, never truly confirmed. It’s just as likely that Nintendo never re-released it because they didn’t want another potential flop on their hands like what happened the first time.

      • $36598391

There was no licensing issue, these people just find the smallest things to complain about
Everyone should focus on getting rid of piracy not complaining about a game that uses bits and pieces of various songs

      • Tom_Phoenix

I would agree if it weren’t for the fact that digital releases cost next to nothing. Considering the game has managed to build up a lot more interest than it had during its original release over the years, I seriously doubt that it would fail to compensate for whatever meager costs such a release would entail.

Furthermore, while it’s true that the licensing issues were never really confirmed, that’s not really saying much. Afterall, licensing issues rarely are, since such talks are almost always held behind closed doors. That doesn’t mean that the songs that were eerily similar to works of famous commercial bands weren’t a potential problem.

Plus, if Earthbound didn’t suffer from any licensing issues, why then did they remove the Earthbound demo from the non-Japanese releases of SSBB?

Granted, there isn’t much rock solid evidence for any of this. But personally, I think that if the game really weren’t caught up in a legal snarl, Nintendo would have released it on the VC a long time ago. Infact, considering the report from and the fact that Iwata specifically mentioned Earthbound during his VC presentation at E3 2005, that might have very well been the original plan:

But anyway, at this point, this entire discussion is moot. Legal issues or not, the game is finally being rereleased. For the fans of the series, that’s really the only thing that matters.

  • KingGunblader

I know we’re not suppose to make console requests but skipping 3DS seems like a huge missed opportunity.

    • puchinri

I kind of feel the same, but at the same time, a small piece of me is hoping they’ll bring the M1+2 GBA port to the 3DS instead. . .

      • $36598391

Or release all three games on a 3DS Cart as a Collection

        • puchinri

That would also be really cool.

    • Samurai Don

Sure it go fine with the others SNES game on the 3DS virtual console… Oh wait.

  • Juuu

This is just such…GREAT news. Normally I hoot and cheer during Nintendo Directs, but this news was so good all I could do was smile and say “How awesome.” I am so glad for all of the fans who have been WAITING and WAITING for this series to get some sort of love in the West, and I’m happy that a whole new generation of people [myself included!] can play it. c: Ya did good, Nintendo. Ya did good.

  • AuraGuyChris

Miiverse, you make our voices heard.

    Now let’s demand Mother 3!

    • $36598391

      Don’t forget Mother 1

      • Samurai Don

I would rather that Mother 1 get a remake as the original game hasn’t aged well at all.

    • Zhizn Snake

Maybe we can use this opportunity for fans to vote with their wallets. Ever single Earthbound/Mother fan should buy this, then maybe sending the sales numbers skyrocketing can really send a message to Nintendo!

  • Spirit Macardi

Careful Nintendo, any more awesomeness like this and you could end up causing the Spiral Nemesis XD

  • oh shit

  • Carl Cheng

Well I guess that’s the biggest reason so far to get a Wii U

  • puchinri

This is exciting~! If they re-translated it, that’d be nice, but I’m just glad that we’re getting it.

  • SteveEdwards

    Holy shit!

  • Red Veron

Uhh. Cool for everyone else I guess. Emulators exist, you know. They’re probably gonna mess with the rom and take out the music that rips off a bunch of real songs. This would be bad for the people trying to make a lot of money off the physical copies.

    • $36598391

      I hope that doesn’t happen

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Good…… now lets bring mother 3 to the Eshop next <3

  • CirnoLakes

    Oh my God people.

    Oh my God.

  • Junko Enoshima

Too bad we don’t have Mother 3 and I don’t have a Wii U. But yay, recognition!

  • TWE

The folks over at Starmen are flippin’ out. Some even contemplating buying the Wii U just for this.

    Now, how ’bout Mother 3?

  • Irina Zanza Baptista

Does this mean Wii’s Virtual Console is officially dead?

  • CirnoLakes

  • Learii

    no 3DS?

  • KiTA

Will it have all the stolen music removed?

  • Edzo04

nothing to be excited about. im more disappointed that it took this long than i am happy that it even happened

    • Caleb

That is kinda a bratty thing to say! Don’t act so entitled, just be happy. ; )

      • Edzo04

        no :P

  • TrevHead

That’s great news! now I don’t have to listen too US gamers moaning on about Mother haha.

  • Margaret Chan

First I promise to buy a 3DS if the Fire Emblem 3DS bundle comes to NA. It does.

Now this?! Buying a Wii U!
