The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Gets Spiritual Successor On 3DS

By Ishaan . April 17, 2013 . 7:40am

Nintendo are working on a spiritual successor to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for Nintendo 3DS, they announced this morning. The new game will take place in the same world, but will feature an original story and new dungeons.

The new game will feature a top-down view, but will have height that makes use of the stereoscopic 3D on the 3DS. The game will be available this year.

I was NOT expecting this, especially since the rumors of Majora’s Mask 3D were circulating Pleasantly surprised!

  • http://linkapics.tumblr.com/ Linka

I’m laughing a little bit cause everyone expected an MM remake. I’m sure people’ll be reeling from this.

But they did say they’d make a new game before remaking an old one, so a direct sequel is not weird. They’ve been tossing this idea around for a while now!

    • The-Beast

Some time ago Nintendo said that they would like to do an original Zelda game for the 3DS before making a Majora’s Mask remake.

      • http://linkapics.tumblr.com/ Linka

Exactly! So people should be happy– it means that more likely than not, after this, the next game WILL be the MM remake everyone wants.

Meanwhile though I’m gonna be happy for more Zelda, ahah.

    • Geoffrey Spurling

I’m so glad it’s not a MM remake, that was such an awful game and started the quality downfall. “Aonuma” Zelda sucks!

    • Zhizn Snake

As much as I would have loved an MM remake, this is even better! Simply put… I love MM, but I love ALttP even more… XD

  • Solomon_Kano

    Whoa!

  • Oni123

Looks awesome =D they also said a 3D trailer is going to be on the e-shop today

  • Eric Harris

    YYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY!

  • $39420547

i loved ALTTP and i was always hoping for something like this to happen

  • Ethan_Twain

Yes, excellent. Top down Zelda? I approve. Controlled with buttons? I approve. And an art style that is neither Wind Waker nor Twilight Princess? I approve! New gimmick in turning into a wall painting? Seems like a winner!

The best Zelda gimmicks are the ones that are integrated into the levels and exploration. Flying in Skyward Sword wasn’t so cool because you could only do it in the designated flying zone. Going small in Minish Cap WAS cool because it was inextricably part of every level. This gimmick looks more like a Minish Shrink than a flying bird.

I’ll need to see more of course, but so far so good.

    • idrawrobots

You could only get small in designated get small areas in Minish Cap.

      • Ethan_Twain

Correct – but every area had the shrinking portals. Every dungeon in that game, every screen of overworld, every house in the town, was designed around the shrinking mechanic. The entire game was a brilliant exercise in level design as every zone was designed for two approaches. Even the little pointless blades of grass you cut down were given significance, as they are obstacles in tiny form.

Other Zelda gimmicks, like Bird Flying or Wolf Transforming weren’t integrated like that. The worlds were just normal Zelda worlds designed for normal walking around Link, with occasional special gimmick asides. That’s the difference.

  • Corey Letcher

sweet, been hoping for something like this for a long time

  • Valter L. Ferreira Junior

    Aw yeah!

  • KHSoraKeyBlade

The moment I saw top-down I punched the air in delight.

    • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

What did the air ever do to you?

      • $36598391

It cut his arm with Razor Leaf

        • miju

          AAAA SO CLOSE RAZOR WIND

          • $36598391

            you obviously didn’t get it

      • AuraGuyChris

        EXIST.

  • Zonic505

Dang, this was a seriously good Nintendo Direct. Cannot wait to get this. I mean, Link to the Past 2?! That’s just plain insane.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Well that announcement came from left field. Going a bit back to your handheld roots, eh Nintendo? *applauds*

    • SirRichard

It didn’t, really; a year or two ago, Miyamoto was talking about how he’d love to go back and do Link To The Past again, but in 3D. They were actually doing that, it turns out!

      • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Generally, I don’t expect most devs who say such things to actually follow through. Then again, Miyamoto isn’t most devs.

  • http://www.facebook.com/magius.necros Magius Necros

Dah dah duh dah! You have acquired a new game!

  • XypherCode

    So excited for this! :))
So basically this is a reboot but not a reboot. lol xD

  • Go2hell66

Coming out this year? so some random e-shop mini game then?

  • PABLO Rapetti Perez

Since I played Oracle of Seasons/Ages Ive been craving for a top down old school zelda (not counting the Wind Waker inspired ones). This made my day :) Nintendo truly never fails to amaze. Now I just need them to confirm Retro Studios is working on a new Star Fox and I will die a happy man.

  • $36598391

Surprised It’s not a remake of Link to the Past but still pretty cool
A brand new Zelda for the 3DS and Earthbound coming to the Wii U Virtual Console
(Disappointed It’s not coming to the Wii and 3DS Virtual Consoles)
Many great announcements on Siliconera today!!!

  • RPAntonioSoler

Having compared some of the new video footage with a map of ALttP’s overworld, my only concern is that that overworld will be recycled in its entirety for this game.

    • Armane

I hope that’s not the case, but the game being set in the same world seems to suggest it.

I’m more concerned with how it will play. Seems to have a stamina bar which depletes with item use, but doesn’t include the sword and shield. I guess there’s not much hope for sub-weapons being relevant in combat.

New (old if it’s LttP/LA Link) Link’s face (Kirby is that you?) looks disturbingly cute as he’s launched towards the screen. But I can probably live with that.

      • Pyrotek85

Don’t forget this is for the 3DS, there is a second screen they’re not showing us. It likely has the subscreen/map laid out.

        • Armane

That would be a fair assumption, though that wouldn’t noticeably alter gameplay, aside from switching weapons on the fly. Although it could be used for other uses (maybe the game will play like PH/ST but with movement on the analog slider).

  • KingGunblader

A new classic-style Zelda to go with Ages and Seasons. Perfect-o.

  • pimpalicious

Nice, my favorite kind of Zelda game.

  • anarchy_panty

I feel like I’m the only one who’s not all that excited by what we’ve been shown of this, and A Link to the Past is my favorite game of all time.

  • Spirit Macardi

Seems odd to call it a spiritual successor to A like to the Past, since aren’t all the Zelda sequels spiritual successors in a way? x3

    • AuraGuyChris

This one shares a closer feeling to A Link to the Past, hence why.

      • Spirit Macardi

Well, A Link to the Past also shared a closer feeling to the original LoZ, so then doesn’t that also make this a meta spiritual successor to that as well? x3

It’s just something that seems funny to me. I’m sure the game will be great and I’ll no doubt pick it up, I’m just poking fun at the choice of words.

  • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

This was kind of the most confusing announcement at the Nintendo Direct. So it’s “set in the same world”… but it’s not a remake? What exactly is its connection to ALttP?

    • $36598391

It could be taking place anywhere from a day to a couple years after LTTP
I hope there will actually be a Zelda game where Link and Zelda are together

  • キロ

I am very happy for this announcement, a fresh Legend of Zelda game is always nice, and for the 3DS is great! I loved A Link to the Past, so the game is building up to be an interesting one.

Since Earthbound was also being released thanks to fans, perhaps we should start a campaign on Miiverse to get Majora’s Mask 3DS next –now that a new, original Zelda is being released! ^^

  • Sergio Briceño

So it seems they settled on Link to the Past then. I knew another remake was too much to ask for, but I kind of hoped they would do Majora’s Mask after Ocarina of Time… Still LttP is definitely one of the top three Zeldas for me.

You know what they say, if it gets a full Mario/Zelda/Metroid game, then it’s time to get that Nintendo console, will be getting a 3DS when this comes out. Hopefully they will have a Zelda inspired 3DSXL by then.

    • $36598391

I like how it kept the look of LTTP while getting touched up a bit the trees look like the ones in LTTP

      • Sergio Briceño

That’s right. And also the look on Link is the same as in the manual (or artbook, it’s been so long I barely remember), even if it’s a little different from what he looked like in game, but it’s understandable because it was a 16bit game at the time.

  • SteveEdwards

    All kinds of yes.
Link to the past was the first Zelda game I ever owned and it is my favourite. 3d is perfect fit for this game.
    Thank u Nintendo

  • Geoffrey Spurling

They better not use the Wind Waker Link for this game, or else I won’t even think about buying it!

    • aecks

B-b-but I like Wind Waker Link!

    • http://www.facebook.com/Mewizkuit Anthony Black

I’m pretty sure they’re going to use the Link that we see in the videos. Looks a lot like the Link from the Game Boy Zelda games, although I have no idea if it’s the same one, especially given where the game takes place.

  • aecks

    Interesting!

The last Zelda game I played was actually Phantom Hourglass, and I really enjoyed it, so I’m looking forward to this!

  • CuteKick

Did anyone else think of Ancient Stone Tablets when this was announced? The sequel to aLttP that took place years after aLttP.

  • puchinri

That’s pretty interesting~. I’m really curious about story details and such of the title (and where it’ll fit in the timeline).

    • Göran Isacson

agreed, if the timeline is to be believed this takes place in the same split as Links Awakening and Oracle of Sages, and those adventures are apparently meant to feature the SAME Link no less! If this game is a canonical sequel to them I really hope we see SOME manner of flashback or nod to earlier titles. Perhaps that is why they decided to relese the Oracle games for the Virtual Console…?

Also, is that Michiko to Hatchin avatar you got there?

      • puchinri

Ahh, you brought up some good points. That could be why they decided to release the Oracle titles too. I’m even more curious now. >u<

And yes, it is! As we were (re)watching it last night, I was reminded how much I loved Hatchin and Rita, and I thought they'd make a warm, cute avatar.

  • luckgandor

A new 2D Zelda set in the same world as my favorite 2D Zelda of all time? Sign me up for ten copies.

  • Zurashii

Pink hair mode unlockable/DLC, anyone? XD

  • http://twitter.com/VXLbeast VXLbeast

    That art style is…

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

You know what a lot of people say whenever a new Zelda game is announced? “It looks horrible.”

I think it looks fantastic. Another art style for a brand new adventure.

    • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Treasure Hunter ♢

More like it’s returning to the artstyle from the A Link to the Past timeline style.

  • $36598391

I wonder what they will name the game?

  • dragoon_slayer12

I can’t wait to revisit the world map. I wonder if the dark world will return. I can’twait , LttP is my favorite, and the first zelda I’ve played

  • dragoon_slayer12

I have to also say, shigeru did tell us this. LttP with a focus on layers, his dream came true (or revealed to the masses)

  • http://www.facebook.com/Mewizkuit Anthony Black

Is that a magic meter I see?

    • Haseyo

By the looks of the video, it seems to be like a magic/stamina gauge. After using the Hammer, it would deplete but regenerate afterwards.

      • http://www.facebook.com/Mewizkuit Anthony Black

It depletes with arrow use as well. I wonder if the reason its shaped like a Rupee is to reference how rupees were used to fuel certain things in the original Legend of Zelda?

  • Sam Park

So a new Zelda game? Awesome! I was waiting for a new zelda game ever since the appearance of the Zelda Timeline

  • Tg

YES!! The wait has paid off. Now, I can take out my official ALttP strategy guide once more (after 15+ years or so) and see if this sequel relies on any of its history. So, with this game, original LA GB cartridge, and future Oracle/Seasons eshop purchases, my Link to the Past collection will be complete~! (And I have no comment on OoT.) Hope the ghost boy shows up again in ALttP2. He’s one of my fav characters.

Just hope the Paper Mario gimmick will be good, but be put to the test so it’s not so easy. :0

  • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Treasure Hunter ♢

So this one is a new one for the ALttP timeline? Cool! Wonder where it fits.
