Devil Survivor 2 Anime Licensed For North America By Sentai Filmworks

By Ishaan . April 18, 2013 . 1:30pm

Sentai Filmworks have acquired the licensing rights to release Devil Survivor 2 The Animation in North America, the licensor announced this morning. The anime series is based on the Devil Survivor 2 game by Atlus, and is thirteen episodes in length.

Sentai say that Devil Survivor 2 The Animation will be “available soon through select digital outlets with a home video release to follow later this year”.

Coinciding with the anime series in Japan is an updated version of the Devil Survivor 2 game, slated for release on the Nintendo 3DS this Summer. Devil Survivor 2: Break Record adds a brand new story that takes place after the original game, and is reported to be around the length of a full RPG itself. This new scenario can be selected right from the start.

Atlus USA have not yet announced a North American release for Devil Survivor 2: Break Record.

Really hope that means we’ll see Break Record come out. The anime is shaping up to be really great, so I’m looking forward to the English version.

Well it is and has already been streaming on Crunchyroll.

But am glad that it will see home video release, hopefully dub and sub on both bd and dvd and not another persona 4 bd dub only, dvd sub and dub…

    • ZEROthefirst

I don’t really get the licensing issues that some companies have with stuff like this. P4 on BD was dub only, Kurokami on BD (Bandai) was dub only, and the BD for Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor had both Eng and Jpn tracks, but if you wanted subs on you could only play the Jpn track and not on the Eng track (I don’t care about this, but it seems silly). Yet on the DVD’s they have both the Eng and Jpn tracks or no subtitle licensing issues.
I’m sure there are plenty of other series’ that have something similar to this, and I don’t know what the deal is between DVD and BD licensing that causes this sometimes.

If I remember right, America and Japan share a Bluray region code, but not a DVD one. Anime DVDs and BDs are ludicrously expensive in Japan for about two episodes a volume, to the sets of whole seasons and series for a fraction of the price in the West. They cut out the Japanese language track in a lot of shows in order to discourage Japanese fans from importing the cheaper US release.

Getting a sense of Deja Vou.

      • XYZ_JolteonZ980

I think P4’s case was because they wanted to release it so close to the JPN release/ (in time for P4G in America) (why would someone buy pricey JPN disc, when they could get 12 episodes on a BD here) for much less. Probably would have had a sub if they waited like usual (first half to release six months after the final JPN bd disc volume release).

Is this receiving a dub like Persona 4? It seems pretty likely…

    • AuraGuyChris

If it does, we’ll get an early glimpse at what the English VA for the updated port will be like if we get that one.

      • $36598391

We got Overclocked so We’ll definatly get Break Code

        • Daru Titor

That’s like saying we got Persona 2 IS for psp,
we’ll get P2 EP for the same console.
          That wasn’t the case…..

          • Spider-Man

3DS isn’t as niche as the PSP in the West.

      • LynxAmali

I’d actually argue it’ll be the reverse (hopefully)

We’ll get the game first, followed by the dub.

I really don’t want Sentai choosing the VAs.

  • bassgs435

I’m still shaken about episode 3, goddamn

    • >MFW there’s an episode 3 and I haven’t even started watching this yet :/

I totally forgot about this, omfg. I’m gonna have to take care of that immediately.

  • Sentsuizan_93

I still need to watch this anime… Better get to it.

  • ZekeFreek

Cool. More excited for the game than the anime, though I might buy that if its not priced too ridiculously.

  • Shane Guidaboni

Expressing the sentiment that hopefully the sub is on the DVD, otherwise *insert bad dub here*.

    • KyoyaHibari

But a dub would mean a Blu-Ray release, so you can still have it subbed with better quality.

    • Hork

While I agree that dubs are, obviously, inherently inferior to subs, it’s been over a decade since anime was dub only. Some companies are even smart enough to offer sub only these days.

      • Shane Guidaboni

Yeah, I know. I was mostly joking. Don’t take me too seriously guys. However, I tried to watch some anime on Netflix last night and Netflix doesn’t offer audio options. Let me just say…yikes. There are some rare good dub exceptions, but I thought maybe dubs had gotten better over the years.

      • Istillduno

Persona 4 american blu-rays were over a decade ago?

The only time I’ve ever been glad to be an anime fan in the UK rather than the US.

  • Muffum

I do still need to finish that game, don’t I. I’ll get on it eventually, I’m sure.

  • This was great news! Devil Survivor 2 is one of my top anime this season (trailing behind Mao-sama and Gargantia) and I’m glad to see it be licensed so soon. Hopefully it will be a fall release for the (possible) BDs and DVDs. That way, I can coerce my parents into getting it for me for my Birthday! Ahahaha!

Anyways, Sentai’s been on a role this season. They’ve licensed so many series that I genuinely want to own, that it’s not even funny. Now if only they could acquire Gargantia then I’d be absolutely, undeniably happy!

  • Spirit Macardi

Saw this coming a mile away x3

I just hope they release this one for a reasonable price. Each volume of the Persona 4 anime costs as much as the game it’s based on.

    • Hork

My general rule is to never spend more than two bucks per episode of an anime. If the people marketing this stuff can’t figure out how to sell it, I’m not obligated to buy it.

  • Thank you Sentai <3 The anime is great, and looking forward to seeing how the dubbed version will sound too.

  • Quinton Cunningham

Dub please? Hopefully with the cast of Break Record that TOTALLY isn’t coming to Anerica wink wink?

    • MrSirFeatherFang

I don’t even expect it to be dual audio on BD…

      • Quinton Cunningham

That’s fine with me. I’m watching it on CR right now anyway with subs.

  • Hork

I would be happier about this if Sentai knew how streaming worked.

  • Just Tim

I hope we’d get a complete series release with the choice of either the DS game or the 3DS Break Code, as a bonus.

  • KyoyaHibari

Not sure about Devil Survivor 2, but Sentai has been making some pretty poor moves with concerns to the titles they license and subsequently choose Blu-Ray/dub releases for. Some of the weaker/scarcely known animes are getting the full treatment while some of the more potentially successful ones get left in the dust. *Looks at Battle Girls Blu-Ray then looks at Tegami Bachi on subbed DVD*…

  • Raltrios

I hope this isn’t connected to the first game… I still haven’t touched my copy of Overclocked yet…

  • Spider-Man

Oh god yes please. Currently watching the Japanese version. It’s so good.

  • yoUNg_grOUp568

kinda sad it’s only 13 episodes

    • Barrylocke89

It’s probably for the best. Devil Survivor 2 takes place over 7 or 8 days, so that means there’s about half a day per episode. And it really sucks when an anime is way longer than it really needed to be.

      • yoUNg_grOUp568

yeah i guess you’re right. P4 got 26 episodes but i guess because there is so much more to cover

  • Detrimont

And Kristi Reed will probably direct the dub(she did P4)

  • Sardorim

They better not retcon Makoto’s character! Just because Ronaldo is a complete idiot doesn’t mean they need to change Makoto for the worse just so Ronaldo looks slightly less like a complete idiot!

  • Istillduno

Come on region free blu-ray or manga/kaze anouncement

  • Jessi Cat

Will only nab this if it gets a BR dual audio release, digital can gtfo XD Or is this going to be like the Persona shinanigans in the past? Been watching this, it’s getting good 3 eps in, hehe.
