Konami have announced Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection for release on the PlayStation 3 this Summer. The collection will include:

  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions
  • Metal Gear Solid 2: HD Edition
  • Metal Gear Solid 3: HD Edition

In addition, the collection will also include two Ashley Wood digital graphic novels.

“We wanted to give Metal Gear Solid fans the opportunity to experience the series from beginning to end, all on one console,” said Tomoyuki Tsuboi, President of Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. “With the collection’s multiple titles, players can truly see how Metal Gear Solid evolved into the critically acclaimed and beloved franchise it is today.”

Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection will be available this June in North America and South America.

  • Tales_of_Master

Right after I bought the HD collection T_T Great timing Konami. Hope that people who never experienced the series before get the chance with this collection.

  • Rudy Soto

I think it’s a good collection for those who never played the MGS series.
Not so good for those who previously got the HD collection…

    • isfuturebright

      I wish they released for X360. MGS4 is only on PS3 :/

      • Solomon_Kano

As is MGS1. And the VR missions.

      • benhofb

Well… it’s kinda a PlayStation title, ya’know? It isn’t exclusive, but it all started out there, so it seems natural to release the Legacy Collection on the platform.

        • idrawrobots

          • benhofb

Okay, fine. So it started out on the MSX2. But I don’t see them re-releasing all the games for the MSX2 any time soon ;P. And side note: the NES versions are non-canon. The series roots are true to the MSX and PlayStation with the exception of a few ports to Nintendo and Microsoft consoles.

          • Solomon_Kano

I’m aware, I was just correcting idrawrobots lol.

          • Solomon_Kano

If you want to take it back, no, not NES. MSX2. The NES got a poor port of the original.

Also, MGS did start on Playstation. It’s MG that started prior.

        • Adam Duffield

Yeah I get that, but ‘directors cut’ versions of each game, 1 2 and 3, have been released on the Gamecube and Xbox respectively. Its odd that hasnt happened for MGS4, especially since every game since has been multiplatform

          • isfuturebright

Yeah I guess it’s all that “oh MGS4 takes a whole blu-ray disk” story

        • isfuturebright

          Yeah, sorry :/

        • Guest

Don’t be a jerk dude, he didn’t do anything wrong

          • Why are you replying to a 2 month old comment? Any way he/she broke rule number 3. No console request.

  • AkuLord3

Besides 4…having the HD collection and MGS1 on PSN, i don’t see myself getting it but still pretty good if you want to get everything if you haven’t

  • MasterFarron

What about my old MGS collection :(

DAMN you konami i won’t buy this!!!

    Oh wow~~
i haven’t bought any of the main games yet of this series but this is too perfect!
after Raiden’s game i would love to see the other side of the series xP

  • dahuuuundge

Konami sure screwed over those who bought the first imcomplete collection

    • Otaku-Sama

Well, technically, this one is also incomplete. The Phantom Pain & Ground Zeroes are also part of the saga.

      • Wake

Well, it has 1987-2012 on the cover. So unless said games have a time machine…they’re out of luck.

      • Solomon_Kano

It’s incomplete, but not because of those. Lacks Portable Ops.

        • and MGS: Ghost Babel for the GBC :P

  • Ugghh…I just bought MGS4 and HD collection, AND 1 on the PSN…

  • Solomon_Kano

Ahem. 5 out of 6. People always forget Portable Ops happened lol.

    • brian

      What about Metal Gear Acid?

      • Juan Andrés Valencia

Metal Gear Acid isn’t cannon though. I’d still love an HD re-release of the Acid games in HD (And in the case of the second one 3D since it did support 3D flawlessly on the PSP).

      • Solomon_Kano

        They’re non-cannon spin-offs so they wouldn’t be relevant here.

    • benhofb

I really wonder why the majority hates PO so much. It was good for being the first true MGS on a handheld (besides Ac!d and the GBC one…), but I guess Kojima was really sour on how his team handled the game without him.

      • Solomon_Kano

I haven’t played it myself, so I can’t say, but Kojima’s made sure to make it as irrelevant as possible lol. It only gets a passing mention at the start of PW.

        • benhofb

I played it awhile back and it wasn’t too bad. It just seemed to lack a lot of the polish other MGS titles had. It brought a lot of interesting concepts to the series, but fell short (IMO) due to it not being directed by Kojima himself.

          • Solomon_Kano

I think that’s the key. Kojima really holds the series to high standard of polish. He wasn’t pleased with the NES port of the original MG, Snake’s Revenge is what made him do MG2: Solid Snake, he axed the in-house MGS: Rising when it wasn’t shaping up. Yea, high standards lol.

        • michel

It was an excellent game, in my opinion.

        • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

The thing is that Portable Ops was more helpful for the main plot than Peace Walker. Portable Ops explained how Big Boss got the money for Outer Heaven, how Ocelot got the idea of the Patriots, how Big Boss met Eva again, etc. Peace Walker just continued the Boss’ story arc to show the darker Big Boss.. Also PO had more famous characters than PW (PO had,the Colonel, Eva, Ocelot, Frank, Zero, Sigint, Paramedic, Raikov and even Snake and Raiden in the updated release; PW had Miller…. who else?)

        • anarchy_panty

It’s a decent enough game, but PW expanded and improved upon every gameplay concept it introduced, so it’s pretty much irrelevant now. The plot in PO, however… Well, you get to look at Ashley Wood’s gorgeous art in all of the cut scenes.. I think that’s the only compliment I can pay it lol

    • I didn’t forget Portable Ops! They just never pushed that as a “main game”. You remember Kojima insisting that Peace Walker was MGS5. :P

      • Solomon_Kano

        Fair enough lol.

  • benhofb

Huh. I wonder if it is going to include the PS1 version of MGS or an HD port of the “Twin Snakes” remake…?

    • Solomon_Kano

PS1 version. There’s some crazy rights hangups with Twin Snakes involving Nintendo and (the now dead) Silicon Knights.

    • NoOneInParticular

Well, KojiPro didn’t make TTS, so

  • Manny Being Manny

Is Metal Gear Solid 2 going to be HD? It says Peace Walker and 3 will be but nothing for 2..

    • Solomon_Kano

      Yea, it’ll be HD.

  • Simon

I wonder if half of these will just be a code for you to download. or all on actual disc.

    • Peace Legacy

Considering MGS4 already nearly maxed out the blu-ray disc, I think they are just going to compile the MGS4 Trophy edition CD and MGS HD collection CD together into one fancy package (along with PSN download codes for older titles)

  • puchinri

I never properly collected most/any of them and barely played any, so I’ll probably get this~.

  • “Metal Gear Solid IV: Trophy Edition”

    • Solomon_Kano

To be clear, if you already have 4 or the rest of the included games and don’t want to purchase them again, there’s already a Trophy patch for 4.

      • I got rid of it a loooooong time ago, lol. I need to pick it up again, and may as well do it in style ^^

  • NLucafs

    So, wait… MGS2 isn’t the HD version?

I can understand MGS1 not being Twin Snakes, but why isn’t MGS2 the HD version? To give people a reason to hang on to the HD collection if they bought it?

    • Solomon_Kano
      • NLucafs

Ah, that’s good to hear. I’ll probably trade in the HD collection towards this then, to have (mostly) everything MGS related in one place!

        • Solomon_Kano

Same here. I’m missing 4 and 1 anyway, so this’ll definitely be worthwhile for me.

    • @twitter-117653239:disqus @Solomon_Kano:disqus Yup, my mistake. I just left that out by mistake. Fixed, thanks!

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

SoB… Just when I was planning my gaming budget for the rest of the year…

Now that’s less money for the “Miscellaneous/Unknown” column =(

  • What’s…the difference between this and HD collection again?
That they added.trophies to Metal Gear Solid IV?

    • Solomon_Kano

Well, the HD collection doesn’t have 4 at all. This also includes MGS1, MGS1 VR Missions, and what I’m assuming will be the Ashley Wood digital graphic novels that were previously released on PSP.

  • Manny Being Manny

Talking about trophies, will this be a version of MGS1 with trophies or just a pure PS1 classic version?

    • Solomon_Kano

PS1 Classic, most likely. The Japanese version of the HD collection previously came with a voucher for MGS1 on PSN, so I figure they won’t do anything extra here.

    • benhofb

I’m wondering that too. It has MGS1 and VR missions, so I am wondering if these will be just re-prints of the PS1 discs or re-hashes on one disc with trophies and filtered graphics or something.

    • NoOneInParticular

      It’s a PS1 title … why would it have trophies ..

  • JustThisOne

Ah, this must’ve been what they were teasing a little ways back.

    That’s cool! :>

  • $36598391

I hope it’s going to be the disc version of MGS1 not a code for the PS1 classic

    • DCBlackbird

What was wrong with that version?

      • Edzo04

nothing. we just want it on disc and not a stupid download

  • konsama

F’in awesome! And available to Mexico. I’m so preordering this.

  • ndjn3979

I hate to be “that guy”, but is ANOTHER collection really necessary?

    • Solomon_Kano

Not necessary, but nice for the people who still have yet to get into the series. Especially with the next game coming up. For the rest of us, it’s just there.

    • DCBlackbird

while the hd collection focused on the core games(mgs2 with more twists than a twizzler, mgs3 because it is the prequel, mgspw because of the revelation it shows)this offers the whole experience. But for some reason i think this is just the japanese version of that with a new coat.

    • isfuturebright

I think they are doing it to give new players a chance to play it before MGS5.

  • Anime10121

I bought the MGS Anniversary Collection for PS2
I bought the MGS HD Collection for PS3
I own ALL of the games in the collection (well not VR Missions, but I do own the fantastic Portable Ops)
Will I cave and rebuy this Legacy collection of games I already own? Probably :(

I hate you Kojima, you make awesome games (even if they are the same thing I already own, They’re the same things I already own in ONE COMPLETE COLLECTION!

    • Testsubject909

You forget though. You don’t own that special packaging box that’ll package all those games in one complete collection!

  • Pombar

What a perfect opportunity to HD brush up Portable Ops for the PS3, missed. Such a fantastically fun, bitesized entry, with an interesting and enjoyable place in the canon (with so many great cameos and character origins). A real tragedy the way they’re treating it.

  • Zonic505

If it’s PS3 exclusive, it’d be cool if the Ape Escape mini-game was added back in.

    • Samor

…and that “nightmare” game. Don’t think it’s going to happen though, I’m pretty sure they’ll release what’s already there in one big package.

  • Juuu

Kojima’s little Phantom Pain stunt hooked me. I’m actually really interested in this because the extent of my MGS knowledge can be summed up by “Snake? SNAAAAKEEE” and that’s about it. For complete newbies late to the party, this is a really solid collection!!

    • Heh solid. xD

    • Edzo04

i hated the phantom pain crap personally haha. at least it sparked your interest

  • DCBlackbird

huh kinda forgot young solid snake existed…….weird looking at him now……his similarities to big boss elude me….

  • DCBlackbird

sigh…. portable ops is pretty much forgotten huh?

  • Draculoid

I’m just curious which of these include trophy support, obviously the trophy version of IV but what about 2 and 3 HD editions?

  • XxStoicmonkeyxX

I knew skipping that HD collection would be worth it.

  • Looks like I’m going to have one hell of a summer :)

  • Holy wow. The whole series minus Portable Ops. I mean I have already seen the whole of Portable Ops and it is kind of meh. Though I do consider it part of the mainline series.

    • ZEROthefirst

Personally I prefer PO over Peace Walker. PO explained how so many things started, characters origins, etc. Where as the only real good thing out of Peace Walker were the Monster Hunter monster fights and the darker Big Boss.

      • Solomon_Kano

“Peace Walker explained how so many things started, characters origins, etc. Where as the only real good thing out of Peace Walker […]”

I’m assuming the first PW should be PO?

        • Testsubject909

          9 hours later. No edits.

Maybe he/she DID mean that PW did both…

          • ZEROthefirst

No I haven’t been on Siliconera or any site that uses Disqus, so I didn’t notice someone responded about my mistake. It’s fixed now at least :P

          • Testsubject909

            Welcome to Disqus and Siliconera.

I hope you like your stay.

It’s kinda like a hotel in California here.

        • ZEROthefirst

Don’t point out my flaws XD

          • Solomon_Kano

            My bad lol.

      • DCBlackbird

Though I can’t agree with you on your favorite I do agree Peacewalker was constantly bashing me with “hey you see the guy you’re playing as? looks an awful like the character at the end of mgs4”

  • ZEROthefirst

Should make the original MGS for the PS1 and Twin Snakes for the Gamecube available on this. Have both though as well as all of the other games, so I wish I had gotten into the MG franchise later.

  • Kalis Konig

So they chose to add the regular MGS 1 over Twin Snakes?

    • Testsubject909

Twin Snakes was on the Gamecube, to note.

It’s uncertain (at least to me, since I don’t know why) exactly what’s in the way of them getting Twin Snakes over in the collection, but you can speculate quite a few causes.

      • isfuturebright

I haven’t played MGS1 but some friends told me it’s better to play the PS1 version because they changed some major stuff for Twin Snakes.

      • Mr_SP

I’d expect the main one to be that they’re probably using the PSOne Classic version… Not a port or some such thing, like they did for Sonic Adventure. Heck, Metal Gear Solid 4: Trophy Edition… Is exactly the same as the original version of Metal Gear Solid 4, but with a free patch on the disc. They’re not doing anything special, here.

      • XiaomuArisu

Silicon Knight made Twin Snakes, maybe thats why.
BTW the remake was a letdown. It didnt have the MGS charme.

  • Ark

    MGS with trophies?

  • What about Europe? They always leave us out. Sony did the same with the God of War and inFamous Collections.

    • XiaomuArisu

      Germany got the GoW collection
      Sadly no InFamous..

  • Adam Duffield

Hard to justify getting after getting the HD collection on my vita, as well as the ps1 version of MGS and PSP version of Peace walker.
EDIT: If this was on 360 Id get it just for the convience of having all the games on one console, especially MGS1 and MGS4 (The only games in the series you cant play on Xbox)

  • Zhizn Snake

Would Metal Gear Solid 2 HD have the same content as Substance, and would MGS3 HD have the same content as Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence Limited Edition?

    • Solomon_Kano

Yes. This is just the HD collection with games it was missing. The HD collection was based on Substance and Subsistence.

      • Zhizn Snake

Thanks! (I’ve been meaning to find out and make sure of that since the last HD collection was announced, actually XD)

  • MrSirFeatherFang

If there’s no limited edition I might as well pick it up when it’s cheap… unless the thing itself is limited.

  • DesmaX

    … I still miss MGO

    • Testsubject909

Dat moment when a sniper passes by you while you’re in your cardboard box on a rooftop and doesn’t realize you were hiding there but soon comes to that realization when he gets instantly killed right after having spent about five seconds aiming with his sniper rifle.

…. Feels soooooo good…… And is the reason why I always shot at every cardboard boxes I ever saw.

Edit: Because I knew how I played… And I was sure someone out there played the same way I did.

  • Zero Shift

I feel kind of ripped off after buying HD collection already. Unfortunately, as a huge MG fan, I’ll still buy this…

  • Namuro

Man, that’s a great poster there. I want one in my room.

  • Sergio Briceño

I think I’m gonna pass. Going to get the whatever-is-called ultimate collection which will probably come out a couple of years from now. It better have V and Portable Ops…

  • NightzeroAX

Cool. I’ve only played a very little bit of MGS I and II. I’m gonna look into getting this.

  • Testsubject909

1987. Huh. I was born that year. Awesome.

Now… what’s going to be that price tag?

  • artemisthemp

Am I the only, who think Picture 2 look like a Movie cover?

  • Kioku

  • TheExile285

And this is why I’m glad I waited ^_^

  • Kai2591

    Here, have some T.E.A.

  • Göran Isacson

I would be excited, but this is Konami we’re talking about. Remember the Silent Hill Collection. Rememberrrr….

    • Solomon_Kano

And then remember that the MGS Collection came out a year before Silent Hill HD and was great.

This is literally the HD collection + MGS4, some PS1 Classics, and the digital graphic novels from PSP. They aren’t doing any new work, they already got this right.

      • Göran Isacson

Fine point- I guess that Konami would put more cash and effort into such a big name franchise as Metal Gear Solid. Guess I’m just a little salty since I bought the original collection and now there’s a collection with even more stuff on it’s way, but eh- shame on me for not holding out for something more complete, really.

  • XiaomuArisu

    Keep you waiting,huh?
    Thats a collection for meXD

  • I wonder how expensive this will be – and whether it’s very limited in stock or not.

  • well mgs3 and peacewalker are there, mgs5 will also be there, thus the absence of mgs portable ops doesn’t make any sense.

    • Solomon_Kano

MGSV will not be there. It doesn’t even have a release date yet.
