BlazBlue Director Thinking Of A New Fighting Game For PlayStation 4

By Ishaan . April 23, 2013 . 12:40pm

BlazBlue director Toshimichi Mori is thinking of a new fighting game targeted at the PlayStation 4, he reveals to Rice Digital. When asked whether Arc System Works were developing a game for the platform, Mori replied:

“Yes, we still can’t give you a title name—but we are working on it. We’re a fighting game maker—so we’re thinking of doing a fighting game. I want to make a new title to follow Guilty Gear and BlazBlue—a third title. Guilty Gear was made for Dreamcast originally, BlazBlue was meant for PS3 soon after it launched—so now that PS4 is coming out we’d like to make a completely new title for it. Making something at these turning points is what Arc System Works is all about.”

Meanwhile, Arc System Works will release BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma for the PlayStation 3 on October 24th in Japan.

don’t care if its ps4, ps5, ps6 or ps7 arcsys better stick to those beautiful 2D sprites

Hopefully it can go 4K res and/or higher framerates..

Who knows, maybe the PS4 can pull enough polygons to make very awesome models with “anime” shaders..

(TDA Hatsune Miku with SSAO comes into Miku Miku Dance)

      • Solomon_Kano

I believe Yoshida already said the PS4 doesn’t support 4K output for games. It supports 4K output for movies though, so there’s that. Not that anybody this side of Bill Gates can afford a 4K TV yet anyway.

  • Eliézer Dos Santos

Dreamcast? The first GG is for PSX.

    • I believe he was just referring to the X line of games that completely overstayed their welcome.

    • Luna Kazemaru

Like he just said. ‘was made for Dreamcast originally”

      • neo_firenze

Except that’s just plain incorrect, because the original Guilty Gear was a console-only title for Playstation.

Must have been some sort of mistake or a reference to the Guilty Gear X family of games that has been getting updates for over a decade now.

    • It’s a bit of a stretch, but maybe “made for” and “released on” are different. But I mean, I totally remember playing my PlayStation Underground disc that had a demo for GG waaaaay back in the day…

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

It’s not specified, but does he mean PS4 exclusive (possible, but unlikely), or just for PS4 at this time (as it’s the only next-gen console officially announced as of now)? I’m prolly going with the latter since we can’t predict how Microsoft’s next system will perform in JPN.

    • Kaitsu

Probably next-gen, because even though he says BlazBlue was for PS3, it obviously came to 360 as well. But if anything, ASW is more of a Sony fan.

      • The next Xbox has not been given an official name yet and a lot of developers are outright just not mentioning it until it gets officially announced. They just state PS4 or next gen consoles.

    • Sardorim

I’m sure it will at the very least get ported to the PSVita too.

    • Solomon_Kano

It’s the latter, most likely. I can’t see them already ruling out an Xbox version, it’s simply that the next Xbox has yet to be officially announced. Lots of devs are just mentioning PS4 when talking about their next-gen games, if not just generally saying next-gen.

    • outlawauron

I’m pretty sure we can say for certainty how Microsoft’s next system will perform in Japan. Predicting it being in last place with 1.5-2 million sales LT is a super safe bet.

  • RichyGaming

It kind of makes me sad how they would make a new title just like that. Guilty Gear to BlazBlue to the next new title (I heard GG is coming back, I’m happy for you GG lovers :D). Not too long ago, I hated fighting games, I thought it was just stupid and the only games I knew that was a fighting game was Tekken and Street Fighter. But at one point my friend showed me BlazBlue and I was actually pretty hype to play it. (CS II). I played that more than any other RPG/shooting/etc. Then I got extend. Later on I started hearing about Guilty Gear XX accent core and borrowed it from my friend (for psp). I fcking loved it. But I wasn’t going to get it until I finished BlazBlue.
At the end of BlazBlue CS II I learned not to assume all fighting games have no storyline whatsoever with stupid characters jumping around without running normally, it takes more than that, along with practicing combos and figuring out openings and whatnot in pretty much all games, not necessarily ASW games only. Anyway, even though I kind of down to hear about a 3rd title already, i’m gonna pull that stick out of my ass and and root for Arc System Works anyway.
P.S: I don’t hate any fighting games, at least not after I found out they are fun.
And its not a bad thing for them all not to have the same mechanics like BlazBlue and Tekken’s battle mechanics in comparison, because that makes them unique, right? Otherwise it’s the still unique except in a negative way.

    • Sardorim

Nothing says that a new Blazblue might not appear later on for the PS4 or at least the Vita. There’s also Arcades that are still big in Japan so I’m sure they’ll still be updating Blazeblue at least over there.

      • RichyGaming

        lol I hope you’re right.

  • Laith Rem

Give me another Persona Arena game pls.

  • XiaomuArisu

    Super HD Arc System Sprites?
    Yes please

    • Damarius Wingfield

      *Speaking deviantly* How…….WONdaful!

      • XiaomuArisu

        Oh Behave

        • Damarius Wingfield

  • Herok♞

I might have to get a PS4 sooner then I want then if both this and Versus come out for it.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

    Man, that was fast.

  • Sardorim

Making a new series at least means that they wont reach Character bloat… And new is exciting! Besides, at the very least I know that they know how to make great Fighting Games, so old or new IP doesn’t matter if they’re at the reigns!

  • Solomon_Kano

  • z_merquise

A new fighting game IP from Arc is always cool for me. But I wonder when we’ll see a new 2D Guilty Gear.

    Also, that thumbnail.

  • Brimfyre

That’s fine but don’t abandon the BlazBlue Universe like you did GG.

The BlazBlue story is really unique and I love all the characters personalities unlike most fighting games I play.

    • It’s not abandoned, just on hold. Sega got the rights during the Sega Sammy merger so until recently they were trying to pry them back. It has been said that they plan to finish it after Blazblue’s story is resolved.

      • Brimfyre

That’s good to hear. I was just going off comments where he once said that the GG audience had grown up and they wanted to start something new. I was scared they would say that about BB as well.

Good to know those comments were just because of politics going on in the background.

  • Setsuna ♥

Can we just get a GGxBB game ?

    • Solomon_Kano

They’ve said that they’ll look into that once they wrap up the BB story.

  • z_merquise

Mori: I’m concerned that the machine (the PS4) is made with the assumption that you’re connected to the internet. That means you need to have the infastructure in place – which only really exists in countries like US and Japan.

Yep, I felt the same way. And I hope that every console in the next gen won’t turn out to be like this.

  • Vash bane

aww that’s sad news I know im not the only one who wished they would continued GG I mean there so much I still don’t know for one…

who the HECK is THAT MAN!?

and is the maiden of the groove really dizzy like some say?

and what about all that new stuff they told us in the late game?
(im more confused than I was at first…got to replay it game lmao)

    • RichyGaming

      Guilty Gear is coming back.

  • As long as it’s not another case of Battle Fantasia, I’m likely to buy.

But I’d love Arc System Works vs. Capcom. It would be the pinnacle of fighting game design, the most enjoyable fighter of all time, the best sprite art to date, have half the cast perfectly balanced twelve characters that are broken good, and five or so characters that you’d get laughed at for using… Ah… Heaven…

    • Solomon_Kano

Just imagining Capcom’s characters rendered in ArcSys’ lovely style is blowing my mind.

      • It’s sad that their colorful characters hadn’t gotten a chance to shine in some high quality sprites before they switched to 3D. The ones in the SF3 and Capcom Vs. SNK 2 ones are mostly decent, but there is so much more possibility now!

        • Solomon_Kano

Seriously. I liked the look of CVS2, but just imagining how amazing it could’ve been to see them in some high-quality 2D animation? Gosh.

  • PRGamerCub

I wish they would make a new title too …. but i wish they didnt stop making the old games :( like they did with guilty gear …. we never got new ones after the ps2 games :( just ports

  • O man this sounds like it’s going to be good! I love the BlazBlue series so I’m excited to see what they’re going to come up with next =^_^=

  • Richard N

Just give me that Guilty Gear X3 already. Daisuke you know you want to!!

  • Kari

“Guilty Gear was made for the Dreamcast originally”
…The first Guilty Gear, which I own, was released in 1998 on the PlayStation. The second game was released in 2000 on Dreamcast…All Guilty Gear games after that were released on PlayStation 2. Just saying its a lie that they make a new fighting game for every new generation system.

  • fireemblembeast

This sounds great! I can’t wait to see it unfold from the start. But we still have at least one more BB to look forward to! ^_^

  • Hinataharem

GG was red, BB is blue, who wants to guess the next level of hue?

    • fireemblembeast

Yellow, since its the other primary color!

  • MrRobbyM

I’d much rather have something new than extend something until it becomes bad. So that’s good.

Hopefully something a bit more like GG.

  • TheExile285

    Finish BlazBlue first >_>

    Also, it MUST stay 2D

    no UMv3 style…..

  • Anonymous

    No Wii U?

  • Serpenter Rex

I hope that they’ll at least tie up BB and GGs plots at some point…

  • raymk

Yes! I love old series but I also like them to start out fresh again when it comes to next gen systems.

  • fireemblembeast

I bought a ps3 for BB, so PS4 I’ll buy for this, most likely! I hope it has another catchy name with alliteration (I think that’s what it’s called…).
…By the way, whatever happened to that anime for BB that was considered?

  • ndjn3979

So….BB’s gonna be like GG, with the storyline up in the air.

Oh well. I’d actually like a new franchise. Always preferred GG’s visual designs over BB. Wish the gameplay was something between the two. GG=Too extreme, BB=A little uninspired.

That and make the characters shut up for Christ’s sake. There’s like over 200 yapping in a match.

  • Göran Isacson

I do wonder if they’ll be able to revisit BlazBlue and Guilty Gear if they’re working on a new game… on the one hand, they have certainly taken their sweet time getting new Guilty Gear content out. On the OTHER hand that WAS a whole legal quagmire and they DID produce Persona Arena while simlutaneously (I presume) developing Chrono Phantasma. So maybe they DO have enough people and resources to do two games simultaneously?

But on the THIRD hand I presume PErsona Arena was being developed with funds and backing from Atlus, so that may have something to do with them being able to make two games at the same time…

  • vileBrenman

Hmm how about a super HD blaze blue x guilty gear x persona 4 arena
