Report: Heavenly Sword Movie In Production Along With Ratchet & Clank

By Ishaan . April 23, 2013 . 9:45am

Ratchet & Clank is being turned into a movie, Sony have announced. Blockade Entertainment and Rainmaker Entertainment are currently producing the movie with Insomniac, the developers of the Ratchet & Clank games, involved with screenplay, character development and animation consulting. Here’s a trailer:

Additionally, Variety reports (via: Eurogamer) that a Heavenly Sword CG movie is in the works at Blockade Entertainment well. Unlike the Ratchet & Clank movie, Heavenly Sword will reportedly only be released direct-to-home video.

The Ratchet & Clank movie is scheduled for release in 2015.

I seriously hope this will tell its own story in the overall continuity, rather than retelling the story of the first game like so many movies have tried (and failed) to do in the past.

This looks pretty promising though. I’d totally see a Ratchet and Clank movie, and the fact this trailer has their actual voice actors instead of celebrity voices bodes well in my book.

A Heavenly Sword movie though… There’s only one game to that series’ name, and it tanked hard.

It’s also written by Insomniac’s senior writer (who’s also a screenwriter, apparently), so there’s that too. As for the story:

“Ratchet and Clank tells the story of two unlikely heroes as they struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet is the last of his kind – a foolhardy ‘lombax’ who has grown up alone on a backwater planet with no family of his own. Clank is a pint-sized robot with more brains than brawn. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way they’ll learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one’s own identity. “

Sounds like the it may take place before ToD/APB/ACIT trilogy.

        • Solomon_Kano

Yea, that’s what I’m getting too.

  • new_tradition

I never played Heavenly Sword, but I could definitely see a R&C movie in CGI. The narratives, style and characters are pretty entertaining. I could imagine it would be on par with a Pixar movie ^^

“Unlike the Ratchet & Clank movie, Heavenly Sword will reportedly only be released direct-to-home video.”
    Well, this doesn’t look good.

But, hey, I’m hyped for the Ratchet & Clank movie

  • Zonic505

R&C seems to have some potential. Trailer had some decent moments & a few chuckles. Hopefully, it won’t end up like other films based on sales, especially since it seems like it’ll play like a (very long) cutscene from the game rather than going for the live action route.

Though Heavenly Sword seems like a weird choice, especially since it’ll be direct-to-video (& I assume PSN and other downloadable services) & it’s been 6 years since the game came out. Not sure if it’ll do as well…

I speak for everyone when I say:”Please dont suck!”

    • Sergio Briceño

It’s CGI, there is no way they cou-

      -Resident Evil: Degeneration
      -Resident Evil: Damnation

      Sorry, my bad…

  • Ty Austin

First Playstation All Stars, now a movie. Why not just make a sequel to Heavenly Sword?

    • Ferrick

i reckon that its because they were busy working on a certain game that wasn’t well received (even if you know the name of the game, don’t say it, its taboo)

  • Solomon_Kano

Heavenly Sword… wut. How did they pick up R&C and that? What an odd combo.

If R&C is successful (and good), I’d love to see a movie for one of the other great character-based platformers. Spyro (though unlikely due to Skylanders), Crash (unlikely too), Jak and Daxter, Sonic, etc.

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Add Sly Cooper to that list, then I’d agree with you 100%. (It’s more like 90% right now). =P

      • Solomon_Kano

Well, I did say etc lol. But, yea, Sly would be great too. I actually think he could make a really cool show.

        • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Saturday morning cartoon? Hell yes please!!!

  • fireemblembeast

    Oh derp, I still have getting Heavenly Sword on my to-do list >_<;

    • DCBlackbird

My, that must be quite the to-do list…

      • fireemblembeast

There’s also the “to play” list and the “to sell” list! ;P

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Ratchet & Clank movie sounds like it has real potential (kinda like Wrack-It Ralph), but a 2 year wait?! Jeez, way too early to announce imo.

And a Heavenly Sword movie? That came from left field. I hope it turns out well, despite being direct-to-video. Lord knows everyone has been clamoring for a sequel for a while now (if it is indeed a sequel).

  • KuchikiSentou

I’m way more excited about Heavenly Sword. Such a wonderful game. I miss Kai, Bohan and of course Nariko.

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

I wonder if Heavenly Sword will just the story in the game? It would work but it would take time if it’s realistic CGI and cramming the entire story within 2-3 hours.

I hope the Ratchet & Clank movies comes to cinema in Ireland.

  • Potionzmaster

Has potential, but please give us the Heavenly Sword sequel they were working on!

    • DCBlackbird

I would love that too but unfortunately a large amount of people don’t like strong female protagonist even when skimpy looking. I also gotta ask what would it be about and won’t it always end the same way?

  • Wake

Sweet. I hope they get Anna Torv again.

  • DCBlackbird

lol Honestly a real animator wouldn’t unleash his rage by animating all that

  • DCBlackbird

    lol are there kids here?

  • Just Tim

    Anyone BUT Uwe Boll!

  • Namuro

While I’m not a fan of R&C (only because I didn’t play any of the games), I still find the characters and the world interesting, so I’m quite looking forward to seeing the movie adaptation. I think the movie will do well in other parts like Japan as well, seeing as they have their own manga series over there, so they already have some fan base built there.

  • Kai2591

    R&C movie? lol that’s a surprise.

  • Armane

I really don’t get why Sony are promoting Heavenly Sword so hard. Must be on good terms with Ninja Theory.

Hope a WipEout movie is on the cards. Always wanted to see more of that world.

  • Göran Isacson

Heavenly Sword and Direct to Video… not sure if want. Neat teaser though, even if they could’ve skipped on the dubstep at the end. Please to only be using that ironically. Please.
