Skullgirls’ Third DLC Character Is Eliza

By Ishaan . April 28, 2013 . 1:41am

Fans have decided on Skullgirls’ third DLC character through voting. Eliza will be making her way into the game, Lab Zero Games have announced. That leaves one more DLC character that needs to be decided upon through voting.

The first DLC character, Squigly, is currently planned for release this July, alongside the PC version of the game. PC players will get to help beta test the new characters being added to the game.

  • Kris

I’m proud of all of my fellow Eliza supporters.

Well done, guys and gals! :D

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

      Team Eliza ftw!!!

    • She was one of my picks, and sadly the only one of my picks that made it to the later levels of voting. Still, happy to see one of the ones I wanted instead of one of the ones I felt looked rather boring.

  • Kristoffer Brandberg

Shame that my favorites, Black Dahlia, Brain Drain and Panzerfaust, did not make it. But hey, there will be another voting and Eliza is certainly not a bad character either. So I’ll be cool with it. ^^

  • ResidentMetroid

I think I voted for her… lol. I wanted Minette in but I’m okay with this.

  • Demeanor

That makes for a fantastic new entry! Now if only we could get Stan and Aeon… :D

  • Sakurazaki

    Still hyping Aeon/Dahlia combo!

  • Chris Yuen

I wanted Minette for delicious Kris tears ~.~

    • Detrimont

well, she was in the top 3 along with Eliza, so she might be the second mystery character that becomes dlc

  • evilmajikman

Sweet. Hopefully D.Violet will get the next one.

  • Stanley, Venus or Beowulf please for next character vote. After reading up on Eliza she is awesome and look forward to see what the developers have planned for her.

  • Lame… But it’s free so you can’t complain

    • The Watcher

      you just did

  • Adam I.

Gameplay-wise she did seem like the overall best choice (to me anyway. Correct me if I’m wrong but they themselves said Aeon would be difficult to make, whereas Minette and Annie mechanically didn’t sound interesting at all) glad she won.

    • Pombar

I still think Isaac sounded the most interesting, gameplay-wise… but he was wiped out ages ago, afro scar and all.

      • Adam I.

I agree with you, I actually wanted either Feng or Isaac to win. By “best choice” I only meant out of the final 4.

        • Pombar

Hey, those were my two faves as well. Good taste, sir.

    • Chibito

MikeZ said he knows exactly what he’d do with Minette and that she’d be a great addition to the roster, for what it’s worth. Personally I was hoping for Minette or Annie, but there’s always next round.

      • Adam I.

I must’ve missed that then, my bad.

…looking at her description on the character page, she does have a ‘style’ in place and they seem to know what they’d do with her, I was kinda harsh I guess.

  • MrJechgo

There’s a major problem with the voting process: only those who donated can vote, but those who did are not from the FGC. They’re not experts nor the players of Skullgirls, so they pick whatever character they like.
The FGC has been harping on that for awhile now. THEY want cool characters to make the cut, but since they didn’t donate, they don’t get to vote. The game will end up with characters that gamers will not really care for.

    • Freud_Hater

…But why would someone that DOESN’T play Skullgirls have donated? That’s… That’s insane :/

      • ParrotProphet

You’d be surprised bro. I’ve read some of the comments on the donations page and quite of a few of them were from artists with no real connection to the game outside of seeing a tumblr post or drawing one or three pictures on a deviantart page.

      • I know a few people who donated because they plan on playing Skullgirls -after- the new DLC because the Kickstarter was very good press for the game. Also, some donated because they liked the general spirit of fans being able to support their games and would like to see more Kickstarter projects like it in the future, from what I’ve been told. Both are very valid reasons to participate.

      • A number of people see the game as a bastion of hope for traditional 2D animation in an industry flooded with blind rushes toward realism with no real end point.

    • If the FGC doesn’t like it, they shoulda donated. They can cry all they want. They apparently decided that their $1 wasn’t worth it, so their opinions aren’t worth it.

Also, the major problem with the voting process has nothing to do with who’s voting.

      • MrJechgo

Actually it does, because those who voted picked the best-looking character, not the character with the most interesting gameplay mecanics.
“Oh, it looks cool! I’ll vote for that one.”
That sums up the voting process. Sure, they should have voted, but those who did didn’t tip the vote in favor of characters that had interesting gameplay.
Then again, maybe Lab Zero should have included actual concept of movesets for each of their characters, that would have been better.
I didn’t pay and I didn’t vote, but I don’t really care about the game. I’m just reporting a rather big flaw with the vote.

        • The big flaw with the vote is that the developers only showed off gameplay for a handful of characters. Those demonstration videos were made for only the most gimmick-encumbered candidates and skewed the results, but when I argued this, I was told that it was still fair and that I’m ridiculous for bringing it up. Not that it mattered since most of them didn’t make it to the final round, to say nothing of the emphasis that gameplay concepts were preliminary.

Also, in the first round of voting, questions were included that asked why the voters vote the way they did. Possible answers included appealing looks and appealing gameplay descriptions in the index of candidates. I personally wrote in that I voted based on not who I wanted to play, but who I want least to have to fight against. Maybe they’ll take this into account for the next round, but it’s not going to matter since, as you said, looks matter more to the majority of voters. I’m sure Lab Zero knew this going in, which is why they removed the gameplay descriptions for a time. The game may have been made for the FGC first, but if the majority of people who care about it care more to the point where they directly support it monetarily want to vote against their preferences, who is the FGC (or anyone else) to stop them?

Again, if the people who care the most about gameplay over looks donated even a single, this wouldn’t be an issue, but the problem of bias on the developers’ part would still exist. The entire thing is flawed, but not the way you think it is.

          • Ben Brocka

They only showed off some prototypes of ideas for characters with proposed mechanics unlike anything in any other game. It doesn’t take a blood surgeon to realize what “rushdown, kinda like (guy in fighting game) is”, they only showed off ideas like time travel where fans DON’T have a good idea of what they’d play like. Why make prototypes for “oh look, he’s got projectiles and punches!”

          • And look where it got them. Of all those characters with special videos made for them, only one made it to the finals, and a bunch of people who couldn’t accept that characters who got special attention didn’t interest a majority of voters had to take it out on everyone.

    • Myles Lee

your crazy cause I am an fighting game fan and I donated and I play skullgirls….ALOT. and there were actually an lot of fgc fans if you did your research guy

      • MrJechgo

I’ve checked a lot of other message boards and many people are complaining about that. “Fans” didn’t vote for the gameplay mecanics, but for the looks.
Good for you if you donated and voted, but again, the FGC was not the majority of the peopel who donated and thus wasn’t the majority who voted.

        • Tien Ron

well, its simple those for donate get a vote those who don’t don’t get a vote…whats difficult about it, sounds pretty straight forward to me.

        • That’s how democracy works. The majority cares more about looks, so that’s what everyone gets. If the minority doesn’t like it, then they can either expand their numbers to become the majority or cry and go home.

That said, it seems as if the only person who know how democracy works in this entire affair is Peter Bartholow.

        • Pombar

The vast majority of fight game players (not just FGC but casuals too) find visual/thematic appeal to be a big draw when picking characters to play. Why else were there Sakura enthusiasts in SSF4, when she sucked so bad? And that’s the whole reason Marvel even sells, because people want to play as their favourite characters.

It’s not a bad thing that people voted for who they thought was the coolest. I trust the devs enough that they’ll make sure all new additions are fun to play as and add something to the cast.

    • Armane

Actually they asked voters why they were voting for certain characters. The majority said gameplay. Whether you feel that was reflected in the top 3 and Eliza getting picked is up to you. But I certainly voted Annie for as long as I did because I was interested in playing her.

    • Luna Kazemaru

yeah uh huh sure most of the FGC who plays this game wanted Eliza in it honestly shows how much you know there lol.

    • Astrotrain

Fighting Game Community is everyone that loves and plays fighting games, not just those 20 guys that play at tournaments every week.

    • Göran Isacson

… So why on earth WOULDN’T the FGC donate if they wanted a say in the process? How can anyone be so entitled that they think they can complain when they did not support the company with kickstarter money?

    • Testsubject909

After reading many of your comments…

Wow… Aren’t you just full of yourself? Look, the righteous phase is cute and all but… Hey, stick around. I’ll give you two years or so, hopefully less but I’m going to personally guess two years until you gather enough experiences, humbling moments and more discussions, debate, conversations and ways to view things from other viewpoints until you start to learn not to act like this sort of a dumbass.

Now. Feel free. I know what you want to do immediately upon reading this comment. Go ahead.

You might notice… Nobody cares… Because you’re woefully inaccurate. And unable to understand that… But that’s okay. You’ll feel like you stuck up to the right thing and that nobody understands. It’s not that.. They understand a larger picture that you’re missing out on. Thus they understand you just fine.

Go ahead… I know you want to write it… I know even after I say all this you want to dismiss it. Go ahead. Get it out of your system… Like I said. A year or two. You’ll start changing your general tune.

    • Misty Dawson

What the hell is this bs? I play the hell out of Skullgirls and I am a part of the fighting game community as well. The same goes for my husband. I do not appreciate being put in to this category that because I voted, I’m APPARENTLY not part of the FGC. You’ve got some nerve.

We voted for Eliza not only because she looks awesome but because her gameplay reminded me of my second in Guilty Gear (which is one of her inspirations), A.B.A.

Next time you decide to lump everyone in the same category, just don’t do it. Do your research. Not every one out there is someone who isn’t a part of the bigger picture.

  • ivanchu77

oh well, there´s the second character vote at least…

  • TheDarkEmpress

I’m ok with this. I didn’t get Black Dahlia, perhaps next round but I highly doubt it since she didn’t make it past the 2nd round of voting. Regardless I can’t be too upset, I didn’t get what I wanted but I suppose that can be made up for quite easily with boobs, and oh look, boobs!

  • ParrotProphet

Acceptable, or at least I would say that if I donated and had the ability to vote. Since I do not, I hope Issac or Beowolf are considered heavily like last time.

    • Pombar

Yeah, Isaac and Beowolf were awesome and really different to the existing cast members. Egyptian woman doesn’t really do much for the variety in the game.
Then again, I also quite liked Feng and she wouldn’t have added much either. Preferences!

  • Arizato

Didn’t really participate in the voting since I am not that interested in Skullgirls. But Aeon had a much cooler design in my opinion, not so much blatant fanservice too.

    • Ben Brocka

I know right, the blood and skeleton fetishists always swamp the votes with these things.

      • Arizato

So, because you don’t agree with me you respond with a sarcastic comment?

You don’t want to admit that many people voted for this character just because she is the one who shows most of her breasts? Sure, live in ignorant bliss!

        • CptPokerface

No way, you can read minds?

    • I think if people would’ve voted for fanservice, Venus would’ve won before her, she has more revealing clothes.

  • Neppygear

Would have liked Beowulf, but Eliza is good, too…

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

    … *Ehem*… Uhhh…

Glad she made it into the game afterall. She definitely makes for a good fit into the existing cast (sans Big Band).

Still for the life of me I’m trying to figure out how Minette got so far in the polls… =/

    • Miss_Madness

Because she was popular before the poll even began.

    • biskmater

I still don’t know how that happened either… which is why I am feeling so heartbroken right now…*sob*

  • Just Tim

    Welcome aboard, Cleopatra…er, Eliza.

  • KuchikiSentou

I wonder what Jason Schereir of Kotaku makes of this.
In other news, great to see support of Skull Girls.

    • puchinri

Wow. Did you throw salad-tosser out there as an insult? I think you need to be careful about you’re saying and implying (and why, at that).
Also, who cares what he thinks? If you don’t, then don’t bring it up.

Lets stick to how nice it is to have support of the game, not just draw in mindless drama that has nothing to do with Siliconera.

      • KuchikiSentou

        Ya. You are right.

  • Zonic505

Well hot damn, one of the four characters I wanted made it in! Pretty awesome. Cannot wait to see her in action.

Also, now I can have a team band, with Squigly with her opera singing, Eliza with her singing talents as well, & Big Band for….well, providing the band.

  • Yes! I voted for her all the way and I’m glad she made it! =^_^=

  • DarthSithZero

This is great Eliza & PC version, cant wait.

  • PinkKat

This is wonderful! Now…please hurry with the PC version of SG :( I have had it preordered since it appeared on the site .whine.

Lucky ps3/360 users getting all the sg goodies before us

    • Ben Brocka

They probably won’t be getting much before the PC release; PC release is in june/july and from what I heard it’s going to be about 2 months per DLC character. So maybe Squiggly and Big Band might be out before PC release but not much more.

      • Shariest

I remember reading from the kickstarter-page that the game is June/July and Squiggly is July

  • Aisha Lee

I’m just glad that Minette and Annie made it so far in the polls (kind of wish Feng went farer but oh well). But there is one thing that is irking me, Is the voting poll starting back at square one for the 4th DLC character?

  • Issac was my first choice, but I’m happy with this choice as well. Eliza was my vote on the last poll.

  • NekoDraga

Come on, Team Science Shark and Team Issac. Let’s get one of our guys as the next character!

    • Isaac! Aeon should be a new boss character, along with Venus and Samson. Provided Aeon doesn’t make the cut in this game. Besides that, everyone who makes the Final 8 in both votings should be in the sequel!

  • CirnoLakes

Ack, the only one of that four I didn’t want.

Oh well, one of the other three is getting through. Please be Annie.

  • Cmon annie you can do this next round. I believe in you.

  • JohnNiles

It amazes me how people are still waffling on picking between multiple characters. Pick one and go all-out, or give up.

  • Minette! My heart…

  • Kaihedgie

I’d probably be a little upset if I didn’t know she could turn into blood.

Goo girls are a free pass for me, so I’m cool with it :P

Also, this is now the third character in a fighting game made out of blood

  • TruSpindash

Great news as I voted for Eliza all the way trough, now I have my fingers crossed for Isaac or Beowulf winning the next round.

  • Christopher Nunes

I wanted Minette to win! T_T

I’m hoping she gets in on the next character vote! I’m voting for her all the way!

Well Eliza IS an interesting character and one we haven’t see in the game’s story yet. Though I wanted Minette in so I can try out her Story Mode, if she doesn’t get in I pray that a Skullgirl sequel or another DLC character vote contest takes place to add these characters in.

  • gogogoldberg

I voted for Annie, but I am really excited to hear Eliza won. She is a really neat character with an interesting mechanic. Lab Zero put together so many great character designs and concepts that the fans have clutched onto them tenaciously. I hope that more people support this game so that more of these creations can find their way into it.

  • Warboss Aohd

    Anubis, attorney at law.

  • Hinataharem

    Oh hell to the yes!

  • Göran Isacson

I was personally more of an Annie guy after Isaac got cut, but an Eliza is fine too. Now what’s all this about a second voting round? Weren’t they just gonna pick the character who got second place in THIS voting round instead?

  • Damarius Wingfield

    MENACE from Queen’s blade anyone?

  • I’m sure this pleases everyone who wanted Eliza, I personally preferred Annie, but I won’t complain. There’s still the second chance right? I hope Annie makes it.

  • Brimfyre

Now that I see they were clearly inspired by Queen’s Blade it makes me wish there was an actual Queen’s Blade fighting game.

  • Scrooge_McDuck

Boo. The ones I root for (Umbrella, Black Dahlia, Marie) didn’t even survive the second round.

Out of the final four, I think Eliza and Aeon should be saved for later due to story reasons, but oh well, oh well.

  • soulz

she looks kinda like the girl from “Queens Blade” can’t remember her name though.

  • T-X

Totally stoked for Eliza! Hoping the next character is Minette though. This game needs mo’ mermaids! (and a pun filled rival battle with Ms Fortune~)
