By Ishaan . May 3, 2013 . 9:50am

IGN have shared a teaser trailer for what they say is a spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness, a Gamecube horror game developed by Silicon Knights and published by Nintendo.

The successor, titled Shadow of the Eternals, is a crowdfunded title according to senior director of IGN video, Fran Mirabella III.  Watch the teaser here.

A studio named Precursor Games is involved with Shadow of the Eternals, and the IGN staff specify that Dennis Dyack is involved with the game.

Shadow of the Eternals’ crowdfunding campaign will launch on May 6th.

The more horror games the better.

    Isn’t Dennis Dyack evil?

    • kylehyde

Pretty much I remember that. Last time I checked he left Silicon knights in the darkness (no pun intended) with almost no staff and big money losses.

    • Göran Isacson

Ha ha yes. The less Dennis Dyack input into this game, the better.

Dennis Dyack’s an asshole, but then so is Tomonobu Itagaki, and that doesn’t keep people from wanting to play his games so long as they’re good.

      • Juan Andrés Valencia

        The same with Randy Pitchford.

      • Justin Graham

Itagaki’s behavior didn’t lead to the destruction of Tecmo.

  • JustThisOne

Spiritual successor, hmm? Does that mean there’s no continuity? I can’t help but feel that there’s some kind of tie-in to the first game though. That scene in the cathedral seems exactly like the one where Anthony meets the monks for the first time.

Or I dunno. That’s waay too big of a stretch, I suppose.

    • malek86

Any actual sequel is unlikely, as Nintendo probably owns the IP. At best, this might be something more like what Dark Souls was to Demon’s Souls.

At worst, it might never come out, considering how Dyack seems to have handled his work lately.

Nowadays I don’t exactly trust SK enough to fund a game made by them… and I say this as one of the biggest Blood Omen fans around.

    • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

The cathedral is literally the exact same one seen in ED, and one of the scenes in the trailer has what looks an awful lot like the Tome of Eternal Darkness. It’s pretty clear to me this is a sequel.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Holy eff!!! Hopefully it turns out to be a great game as ED was superb.

  • Moolah

Not sure if Dennis Dyack’s involvement is really a good thing at this point…

  • pimpalicious

Silicon Knights haven’t done anything good in a while, not sure I’ll put my faith in their KS or not even though Eternal Darkness was great.

    • neocatzon

Well, we can count their member with finger. It’s hard to produce anything fast.

      • pimpalicious

I wasn’t referring to how fast SK produces games, I was to that the last few have been very mediocre.

        • http://twitter.com/ValeFalkren Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Silicon Knights is defunct. They worked on the first game anyway

        • neocatzon

I’m wrong with the number, just check the website and they have about 120 employees. How fast they produce is related to what game you can based your judgement from. If you say lately is 1 to 3 years, then Xmen destiny is the only basis, it’s not fair. But, now it’s Precursor Games who’s making this one.

As a Hp Lovecraft fan and a Eternal Darkness fan… and a dude who has been seeing every bit of information regarding a follow up. I must say that this news… has made my day incredible. I thank Xel’lotath for this game.

I really need to play Eternal Darkness D:

Me too, never really played the first one but always wanted it….and now the price on it used are about to skyrocket.

nintendoeverything.com posted a story saying it will be wiiu and pc.

    • Caleb

Great to hear. I was thinking and hoping the game would be announced for the WiiU since I imagine there is a good chance it’s developed using Unity which we now know ports nicely to WiiU.

  • SirRichard

I’m actually more worried than anything; it feels like they’re just desperately clinging to the last major thing people loved and associated with them. Wary of this, it’s a hell of a game to live up to, but I’d love to see something cool come out of this.

Pretty much Eternal Darkness 2. Even the monsters in the teaser come from the supposedly scrapped ED 2.

    • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

Not to mention that 1) the music and sound effects in this trailer are taken straight from Eternal Darkness, 2) the cathedral is literally the exact same obe used in ED, and 3) the description of the game mechanics sounds pretty much indistinguishable from ED. For all intents and purposes, this is Eternal Darkness 2. (Only dodging the legal red tape surrounding the Eternal Darkness IP.)

How odd. I wonder if the way it’s being announced isn’t some sick joke to mimic a Sanity effect.

my wii-u is ready to delete my Save files and crash

  • grevlinghore

That`s pretty exciting! But it saddens me that most good games apparently have to rely on kickstarter or crowdfunding these days. I mean just this year there`s Alice 3 (Otherlands), Shadows of the Eternal, Among the Sleep and probably more that I`m missing. Point being: publishers are ready enough to pour money onto generic, braindead, mainstream games that`ll sell for sure, while talented developers won`t have their work see the light of day ever. I don`t think the gaming industry as a whole can benefit from this mindset in the long run…

Then again, there`s the gems like Dark Souls (2) that manage to succeed a great deal without catering to the masses, but I get this itchy feeling that if we ever want to see stuff like Baten Kaitos 3 or Sonic Adventure 3, the fans will have to finance those from their own pockets, and that`s not where we should be at this point :/

  • C. LeBeau

Where is the crowdfunded link? People want to donate!!

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

      It’ll go up on Monday.

  • DCBlackbird

WHOA! the insanity effects are returning…………

  • Hossi Blumengaarten

NO, ok everyone that made the original Eternal Darkness left because Dyack is freaking insane. Also it was with Nintendos input that the game was made, you watch e3 2001 and after that nintendo changed a ton of things

pissed of Dyack, also the same thing with Twin Snakes, Konami telling him what to do

when he left on his own we got Too Human and some Xmen game that sucked

lol he tried to steal the unreal engine 3 and Epic Games killed hiim at the court!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/psynumb Mahmoud El-Nomani

This might actually be the reason I’d buy a WiiU.

  • Fulvio84

I’d love to back this game but…. Dyack? No, thanks.
