Fatal Frame 2 Creeps To PSN As A PlayStation 2 Classic This Tuesday

By Ishaan . May 4, 2013 . 4:00pm

The original Fatal Frame 2 is headed to the PlayStation Network as a PlayStation 2 Classic on Tuesday, Tecmo Koei have announced. Series director Makoto Shibata made the announcement on the PS Blog, along with a few words on the game’s development.

“The storyline is based on a dream I had after the initial project concluded,” Shibata says. “Thinking back about it, I recall it being a complete dream in many ways. The dream was scary, magical and traumatic, and it had a perfect plot — even with a title and a structured ending. Thus, it was simply a case of how to interpret the dream and recreate it as a game.”

Fatal Frame 2 was also recently remade for the Wii as Project Zero: Wii Edition. Nintendo of Europe published the game in English. You can read more about it here.

I saw the cover and I said to myself…..”gasp! I have the shining!”

PS2 classics really need Vita compatibility

    • Ferrick

so we can shit our pants on the go ? XD

      • gamerdude

lol tbh you don’t really get the same immersion from that small screen but I’d still like to have that option too.

        • Ferrick

dark room + earphones + playing under the blankets = ????

    • ShadowDivz

I know! Im still wondering why it’s not possible.
It has 2 joysticks just like a PS2 controller.

      • Go2hell66

Obviously vita is not powerful enough to emulate ps2 classics, the ps3 versions are already glitchy as hell

        • Odin

Who needs to emulate when you can port? An up-res should be in order… :P

          • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

because emulating is much cheaper than porting perhaps?

  • gryphonofmight

Doesn’t Nintendo co own the IP?

    • Svea Kristiansen

No, Temco owns the IP to Fatel Frame Series..

      • gryphonofmight

No, in 2012 Nintendo gained co ownership of the IP.

        • carlospsp

It is like Metal Gear Twin Snakes. TK can’t release FF2R or FF4 at any other console but to Nintendo ones. Just this.

          • gryphonofmight

Wait so this is the only FF game that can be put on the playstation store? or those games can only be on Nintendo? I now that any future games can only be on Nintendo consoles as long as Nintendo co owns the IP.

          • carlospsp

As long as nobody (or even Namco itself) buys the Nintendo’s shelf of the rights (back), New games are Nintendo Only. I think something like that could’ve happaned as Wii U’s sales are not the expected, so working mandatory in a Game that may not be profitable for Wii U would be expensivier than buying the rights back and working for more profitable expectations at Infinity and PS4.

          • gryphonofmight

Okay I looked it up and the classic games before Nintendo gained co ownership can be ported to other systems due to Tecmo’s co ownership but future games are Nintendo exclusives.

You guys dont do much research do you? Nintendo does NOT own or even co-own the IP. They published 4 and 2 for the wii, and the 3ds game, which they own partial rights to. Tecmo owns the IP entirely, and therefor can do whatever they want. http://www.relyonhorror.com/latest-news/fatal-frame-coming-to-us-psn-next-week/

At any point Tecmo could re-release 4, the updated 2, and spirit camera on any system, they probably dont in good faith to Ninty.

Seeing this makes the jukebox in my head play that Amano Tsukiko song :P

Don’t want to look greedy but how about a western release of Fatal Frame 4? After that we can talk about remakes of the first and third game for newer consoles like they did with the second for the Wii. I imported the US version of all 3 games to my PS2.

  • badmoogle

    Meanwhile in SCEE’s headquarters…”zzzzzzzzzzz…”

  • gryphonofmight

Okay the situation was explained to me. Nintendo’s co ownership is not just for the games they co produced but for the entire franchise. However, this was in the works for a while and was grandfathered in. All future games will be Nintendo exclusives.

See this Nintendo of America? The PS3 is getting Fatal Frame 2. Why we can no have Wiimake?!

  • gamerdude

The scariest game I’ve ever played and I’ve played all of resi and silent hill.

  • CirnoLakes

Best game in the franchise, in my opinion.

And easily one of the best in the entire genre of Survival Horror. Worthy as it gets for a digital re-release. I hope to see people continue to buy and play this game. I recommend this game specifically to anyone who is even remotely a fan of the Survival Horror genre.
