Diablo III On PS3 And PS4 Developed To Have More Of An Action Feel

Diablo III is headed to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, and Blizzard say they’re recreating the game’s UI and controls from the ground up, in order to make them work with a gamepad. In addition to making certain things easier, this also involves adding new features to the game that they feel console players would expect.

“When you flick the right stick, your character actually performs a sort of dodge move that is unique to the console,” says Josh Mosqueira, Lead Console Designer on Diablo III.

“And we added that thing first because PlayStation players are going to have this expectation that, ‘as a console game, I should be able to do that. I should be able to have this cool sort of dodge mechanic.’ And we wanted to give them that.”

Diablo III’s controls for console have been reworked to give the game more of an action feel, Blizzard say. Using a controller to move your character around makes the game feel more “intimate” and different from using a mouse. They also took into account that, unlike PC players, players on console sit a good distance away from their TVs, and this factored into their control decisions as well.

Blizzard also plan to use the touchpad on the PlayStation 4’s Dualshock 4 controller in some manner.

“What we didn’t want to do is simplify the experience,” Mosqueira clarifies. “Because at the end of the day, Diablo’s awesome because of all the different items you can get and all the different powers those items have, so we didn’t want to sacrifice that.”

“I should be able to have this cool sort of dodge mechanic.”

Right. Because that’s my first thought in every game I play. “Is there a cool dodge move? Dammit, just a lame one.”

In all seriousness though, dodge being mapped to the right stick made me think God of War. It’s the only game I’ve played that used the right stick for that.

It’s funny you should say that, because back when they were developing the PC version, they said they were taking cues from both GoW and Zelda, especially for things like boss fights.

Ha. Guess they came full-circle, then.

i know it’s stupid but one of the biggest reason why i can’t make myself like Devil may cry is that i totally hate the way you dodge

Share the whole diablo 3 feeling for the whole family and friends on the couch woohoo!

My thoughts : You dont have the full diablo 3 experience until you have met with error 37.

I am sorry its been a year since that (15 may) and I sincerly hope for the new players that they dont experience that on launch day ^^.

Still wondering if your PS3 stats will carry over to the PS4? Does anyone know?

If not, kinda pointless to pick this up on the PS3, at least for me.

I’m actually looking forward to this. Maybe it’s just because I didn’t grow up a PC gamer (I’ve always been primarily a console gamer up until college, nowadays it’s more half and half) but I’ve never liked the whole point and click to move thing. I like directional pads, analog sticks or WASD. If Torchlight 2 came to PS3, I’d probably nab that in a heartbeat!

    *sigh*

““Because at the end of the day, Diablo’s awesome because of all the different items you can get and all the different powers those items have, so we didn’t want to sacrifice that.””

That is not, and has never been a defining element of the Diablo series, or even a very important element of the series. Blizzard’s inability to recognize that is why so many gamers view Diablo III as monumentally inferior to Diablo II.
