The next Sonic the Hedgehog game will be exclusive to Wii U and Nintendo 3DS as a result of a worldwide partnership between Nintendo and Sega. The game will be titled Sonic: Lost World and more details will be shared at a later date, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata stated in a Nintendo Direct this morning.

Hm, interesting, now this, I didnt see coming! Although, it is fantastic that I have a new exclusive game to look forward to on Wii U! Man I have a LOT of games for this thing I want, but the unfortunate part is NONE of them have release dates yet :(

    • Solomon_Kano

Wii U and 3DS, eh? Half-called it lol.

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

OMG what is Nintendo doing, their not supposed to be making me want to finally buy a Wii U. I cant. OMG This is the best news of the week after such distressing news as No EA nor Take-Two games yesterday. Great timing Nintendo, I will stay looking for more on this, as I love Sonic.

    • Skyer Ist

And this is just the beginning.. Nintendo wil continue their partnerships like with Sega, Platinum Games, Atlus, etc.. Many great games are coming.

      • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Atlus…I guess it depends, I dont think atlus would make Persona Ninty exclusive…

  • NightzeroAX

I hope this game focuses more on 3D (the boosting and dodging/Daytime Stages) than 2D (Colors).

    • Tyler Beale

Personally, I prefer Adventure as opposed to both of those.

      • http://twitter.com/SatoriSatya Satori Satya

        But….

    • Never

It’s confirmed 3D platformer, not to mention they partnered with Nintendo to make it good so it probably won’t have much focus on boosting.
Though it might have an 06 style GOTTA GO FAST at the end of the stage or an attempt to implement it somehow into the 3D section, who knows.
I’m excited to see what they try~

I have no idea why the picture wasn’t included in this article.
In fact it’s really surprising they didn’t mention that it’s a 3D platformer at all.

A volcano, Iceland, dessert, forrest, and water, Yup it a adventure game that i’m looking for.

  • komiko12

Uhh. Can someone enlighten me on this one? Recent Sonic games (that I know of) are released on Nintendo consoles. I don’t get why announcing that the next Sonic game would be exclusive to Nintendo would be significant.

    • Herok♞

Sonic Generations for consoles was PS360 so this is news

      • NightzeroAX

Pretty much what I was going to say.

      • http://profiles.google.com/dnlblue Daniel blue

That, and Sonic IV has been released on pretty much every device with a screen except for (maybe) scientific calculators.

This exclusivity deal is something new – and EXTREMELY IRONIC if you think back on the rivalry Nintendo and Sega shared in the 16-bit days. Seriously, what would be our reaction if someone told us back then Sonic games would eventually be released exclusively on Ninty consoles?

        • Solomon_Kano

Eh, I’d say it’s lost its irony by now. We’ve been getting Sonic games exclusive to Nintendo platforms since Sonic Advance in 2001 — and that actually came out months before the Dreamcast was discontinued. Some 12 years and 14 exclusive Sonic games later, and it’s hard for me to still see irony here. The Sega/Nintendo rivalry has long been dead.

I do get what you’re saying though. Certainly would’ve been shocking news to me as a kid.

    • puchinri

As far as I can think, Generations is the only one that wasn’t? And I guess the difference is exclusive. Unleashed wasn’t exclusive; only the storybook games and Colors were.

    • Solomon_Kano

The last major Sonic game was multiplat without hitting a Nintendo home console at ALL, so this being exclusive wouldn’t exactly be expected.

    • Tyler Beale

Because PCS360 people want in on the game, too….

    • ronin4life

An exclusive of any major series on any platform should be surprising in the coming gen… that is just where things are going.

  • Neppygear

    Uggggghhhhhhhhhh.
I hated having to miss out on Sonic Colours. Why are you doing this to me AGAIN, Sega?

    • Tyler Beale

Because 3rd parties continue to ignore the Wii U, making consumers completely ignore it (and confuse it with the Wii). No wonder Blanny/White Heart has no boobs at all (and gets pissed very easy)…

Meanwhile, the residents of Lowee seem to love Ram and Rom a lot more than Blanny…. (in other words, awesome games continue to come out for the 3DS, and not the Wii U). I really need to at least get a 3DS, if anything….

      • Godman

I love these HDN explainations XD

    • http://twitter.com/SatoriSatya Satori Satya

Sorry but if you’ve been a Sonic fan for at least the last 2 generations, you should’ve been aware that Sonic games fare better and are usually better (see Colors) on Nintendo consoles. They’re a perfect fit, it seems. So this partnership was a no brainer.

If you google how Sonic games have fared on consoles & handhelds in the last 2 generations, you’ll notice what I said about Sonic games doing better on Nintendo systems.

There were 7 Sonic games that sold over a million units just on the Wii. Compared to just 2 on the PS3 and only 1 on the 360 that broke the 1 million units sold mark.

Overall, 21 Sonic games have broken the million units sold on Nintendo systems.

I think its pretty clear why SEGA went with Nintendo.

You should’ve notice that situation by now. Especially, if Like I said, you’re a Sonic fan. Save you lots of drama.

  • PersonaSpace

Well damn, that’s one way to get me to want a Wii U.

  • KingGunblader

Not really surprising, since a precedent for this was already set with Colours. I enjoyed that game, but it needed a lot of work, so we’ll see about this one.

    • Solomon_Kano

I dunno. I’d say that precedent was shattered by Generations not appearing on a Nintendo home console at all.

      • Nikko Thomas

They stated the entire reason for that happening was because Generations was meant to be an HD experience and homage to his past. And then it missed the Wii U because the console launched too far from the anniversary. At least the 3DS got it.

    • http://twitter.com/SatoriSatya Satori Satya

Actually, the precedent was set when SEGA managed to have 21 Sonic games selling over a million units (some sold above the 2 million mark) on Nintendo systems.

Sonic never has managed to sell as good on Sony or MS systems.

      Look it up.

  • Solomon_Kano

I’m so ready for this. It was just a brief glimpse, but it already looks good. Plus Colors and Generations have set the bar at a nice spot, so I doubt Sega will disappoint.

    • http://twitter.com/SatoriSatya Satori Satya

Yep, Colors was really a good Sonic game.

I now have yet another reason to try to get a Wii-U &/or 3DS before the year is up.

LOL It seems that you got thumbed down by a console warrior!

P.S. I gave you a thumbs up BTW

  • megacool

I see tails, hopefully he’ll be playable

  • MrJechgo

Man, I really hope that they go for a Sonic Adventure-style game… Unleashed, Color and Generations were awful…

  • Bobby Jennings

Thankfully I got a Wii-U a few months back..hmm but I dunno how I feel about this yet. Is SEGA that broke? :/

    • http://twitter.com/SatoriSatya Satori Satya

      • AuraGuyChris

Obviously because Nintendo’s audience has far more people who are into platformers than the other consoles that focus a lot in FPSs, gruesome-killing action games, and anything else that is M-rated.

      • Bobby Jennings

Understandable. But usually they release it on all consoles. I was just surprised with this one a little bit…even though they got Wii-exclusive sonic games in the past. regardless though im really excited for the game. I’m feeling good that I bought a Wii-U now.

    • AnimeRemix

I don’t see why you would even think SEGA is broke…or even close to it. SEGA already just recently purchased Relic Entertainment and the fact that we’re still getting games from SEGA is good news.

      • Bobby Jennings

I forgot where I read it at, but I heard they were in debt..either that or lost tons of money.

        • http://twitter.com/SatoriSatya Satori Satya

They’re not broke. They simply did some restructuring so that they wouldn’t go in the red and go bankrupt.

          Preventive measures, that’s all.

          • Bobby Jennings

            I see.

        • AnimeRemix

Understandable. And SEGA pretty much went through a restructuring as Satori Satya said. Many sites (Siliconera included) reported on it and how much SEGA was losing. But I think SEGA is still all right.

      • Bobby Jennings

I read it somewhere that they were in debt.

  • Chiupon

    please please please

i just want to play as someone who isn’t sonic
i know it’s bad to play “Sonic” to play as other characters, but Tails is like my fave. I need more Tails.

    I need another Adventure ;__;
    so maybe excite, maybe not

    • O.O

      sonic excursion

    • http://twitter.com/SatoriSatya Satori Satya

If you look at the single screen shown in the Nintendo Direct presentation, you’ll be able to see that Tails is flying the plane that Sonic is using to get to a strange new planet (The Lost World).

So its safe to say that Tails will have a role in the game.

BTW, Nintendo and SEGA announced yet another Sonic game (untitled) that we know nothing about. Its not the Olympic game either. I guess come E3 they’ll spill the beans over what it is.

      • Solomon_Kano

I don’t think we’ll hear about the other Sonic game this year. With Lost World and the Olympics game both announced today (with at least one coming this year), I can’t see them announcing the 3rd game at E3 when Iwata said we’d hear more about Lost World at E3. We probably won’t hear about that until LW and Olympics are out.

        • http://twitter.com/SatoriSatya Satori Satya

I think they will announce it at E3. Especially if its a Wii U game. That will build hype for both the console and this new partnership.

I mean, if this new title is a proper Mario & Sonic platformer/adventure game (a 2D or 3D game)…. I know quite a few people who would get very excited over that one.

          • Solomon_Kano

I think it’d be a waste to announce it so soon. Sega definitely won’t release all 3 this year, so why announce all 3 this year? It would be in Nintendo’s best interest to hold that last announcement for a time when the Wii U doesn’t have as much to talk about and use it to build some hype back up.

E3 is going to be a hailstorm of announcements, they’ll probably want to talk about Sonic & Mario at the Olympics more, and they already have to give us details on Lost World. Announcing a 3rd Sonic game when we already have two without release dates wouldn’t be a good idea. Best to save that announcement for once one (or both) of the current games is out.

          • http://twitter.com/SatoriSatya Satori Satya

That time when the Wii U doesn’t have anything to brag about is NOW.

            Consumers need this information now.

Even gamers who pretend to know everything about videogames. These are the first to say on forums and here that “Wii U has no games” and “Wii U will never have good games”.

Announcing this untitled Sonic game will make wonders in shutting them up.

And also in making consumers aware that the Wii U has many games on the horizon. And that it will not bite the big one any time soon.

Besides, Nintendo already tweeted that at E3 they’ll drop the bombs. They be showing Smash Bros, the new Mario Kart 8 and wait for it: the new proper Zelda for Wii U (aside from the Wind Waker remake).

Such games are needed. Especially now that some here are making a big deal that the Wii U won’t get FIFA, Madden and some other EA game filled with micro-transactions and paid DLCs. Nintendo needs to overwhelm them with games.

And all signs point to that they will. And extra Sonic game would just seal the deal for many still on the fence.

          • Solomon_Kano

Except E3 is going to have a flood of information already. They already have a ton of games to be announced. Adding another Sonic game two weeks after announcing two of them isn’t going to get people jumping out of the rafters.

3 Sonic games for the same system announced in one year wouldn’t get people more pumped, it would set the games to cannibalizing each other. Sonic fans are devoted, but they aren’t starving.

          • http://twitter.com/SatoriSatya Satori Satya

And yet Nintendo fans have no problem dealing with several Mario games, several Zelda games coming out.

See the thing to consider here is that these games ARE DIFFERENT. That’s why they don’t clash with each other.

Mario 3D Land had nothing to fear from Mario Kart 7. Or Luigi’s Mansion 2. And only because they provide different gameplay and experiences.

Sonic at the Olympics brings in a particular set of consumers that love these games (the series have sold millions). A Sonic 3D platformer caters to platforming fans. And this mystery title? Who knows what genre it will cover, but it will likely be something different – otherwise, why make it if its going to be the exact same as one of the other 2. ;)

So this new mystery game is likely going to be different. And it will probably bring people to the Wii U and who don’t care for the Olympics game or the new 3D platforming game.

So its all good. And I assure you, Wii U users will not complain about getting too many good games.

            Vive la difference!

          • Solomon_Kano

They have several Mario games, yes, but they’re all spin-off franchises unto themselves. Nobody mistakes Mario Golf for Mario Kart. Sonic has the platforming games, the All-Stars series, and the Olympics series. We’ve got two out of 3 announced in one day and it hasn’t been long since the last All-Stars.

But, as you say, it could go for a different audience than Olympics and Lost World. So I guess we’ll see.

          • http://twitter.com/SatoriSatya Satori Satya

Yep. The reason why the Mario games can co-exist with each other is because they’re different. You do not get the same fix playing Mario Kart 7 as you do playing Mario 3D Land.

The same happens with the Sonic games that were unveiled today. They’re going to be different experiences. And the 3rd game is probably going to be just as different (otherwise, why make it?)

So I don’t really see a problem with the mystery game being announced at E3. But if it isn’t, then I’ll be ok with that too.

I just don’t see it being a negative overwhelming Wii U users with games. Because they need every excuse to dust off their consoles.

          • Testsubject909

            Ah yes, E3.

The day when keeping up with the gaming news is going to be like a full time job.

      • AnimeRemix

Well, I think Iizuka confirmed in a interview that we will be seeing more of Tails in future Sonic games, so seeing him here in Lost World is no surprised (Tails played roles in Colors, Generations, and Sonic 4 episode 2 thus far, so more Tails is good).

        • http://twitter.com/SatoriSatya Satori Satya

Well that’s certainly good to read!

    • Testsubject909

But Til died in the first episode of Aoi Sekai no Chuushin de.

The joke aside that most likely will fall flat. Never was big on Sonic, wasn’t a Sega kid either, but looking at your upvote to downvote ratio.

It looks to me as though not a lot of people think it’s bad.

      • Chiupon

which is crazy because i’ve been getting all the downvotes lately :<

SEGA sued Nintendo? I think you mean Level-5

He’s already in the current Smash…

      • http://www.facebook.com/ren.mojito Ren Mojito

Just because a 3rd party character has been in smash once, doesn’t mean they’ll show up again. As snake and sonic was the first 3rd party characters.

If people who’d been in smash continued to go on in each series of the games, then we’d have mewtwo and roy.

  • Skyer Ist

    Amazing news!!!

  • http://LevelUpGeneration.blogspot.com/ KALiverin

Just to correct some people here, Generations WAS on a Nintendo platform. You’re forgetting that there was a 3DS version as well. Granted, it wasn’t a Wii game, nor was it the same as the console versions, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t on a Nintendo platform.

    • puchinri

Thank you! I always forget that (I did earlier today even).

  • Setsu Oh

OK. sega did some ugly mistakes those past years but the kid targeted sonic games lately were not too bad(transphormed, colors…). why not.

  • Brandon Coley

  • Jordan

As I see another sonic game, my hype began to flow unstoppable like! Cannot wait for game-play. I’ll end up buying the 3DS version.
