By Ishaan . May 17, 2013 . 7:14am

Over in Japan, Nintendo have announced another game from Sega headed to the Wii U via Nintendo Direct. Yakuza 1 & 2 HD are headed to Wii U in Japan with Wii U-specific features, including off-TV play.

Nintendo have not announced Yakuza 1 & 2 HD for a Western release yet.

Good now announce a Western release please :D along with a announcement of a Western release of Yakuza 5

  • malek86

On one hand, it’s not like a HD remaster could do much. On the other hand, perhaps this is going to mean that newer Yakuza titles might be on Wii U as well… although they are likely to eventually move to PS4, so who knows.

  • Alos88

Hmm, I wonder if Nintendo will help bring over the Wii U version of the collection, I’ve heard they’ve helped bring over titles like Dragon Quest in the past.

    • Zeether

Yeah, if they’re willing to help with third party devs and localizing their games (Bravely Default for example) then I think this could be something they do next.

      • ffboi7

I don’t really think Sega really needs any help with localization considering both Yakuza 1&2 has already been completely translated to English. Its all up to Sega to bring it over.

Nintendo helps in the form of CASH. Which can be very persuading

Take this with a grain of salt but out of the three regions of Nintendo Direct Yakuza HD collection was only shown in Japan and all else was the same.

      • Solomon_Kano

That’s because, even if it were coming, it wouldn’t be out this summer. I dunno about NOE’s Direct, but NOA’s was about games coming this summer (with the exception of the Sonic tease).

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

    … what?

  • Solomon_Kano

Now this was unexpected as hell. Do they plan to follow this with a Wii U compilation of 3 and 4? Because, if not, I can’t picture what the point of this was.

Meanwhile, I hope Sega announces 5 for the west come E3.

    • malek86

Perhaps to gauge if the Wii U is a good platform for the series? Although I can’t imagine this HD remaster selling too much, so I hope they don’t have their expectations too high on that.

Or maybe they are just looking for a quick buck. It’s like saying, “what was the point of releasing the Splinter Cell HD trilogy on PS3″? Well duh, to make money.

      • Solomon_Kano

I don’t really know that the SC HD analogy works. SC was on everything under the sun up until Conviction, while Yakuza is about as exclusive as it gets. The lateness of this port just adds to it. Like, would the cost of porting this even be worth the return?

That said, I do believe it was just for a quick buck. I mean, releasing a late port of a port wouldn’t exactly be the best way to gauge the Wii U audience’s interest, if that’s what they wanted. Then, when we consider how small that audience is anyway, well… what would they be looking for? A second platform for the series? It’s not like an Xbox port is on the table, so Wii U would be the choice without question.

        This just boggles the mind.

Hm, I do not think Sega would bring this over without help from Nintendo. I guess they could if they wanted to attract that “mature” crowd since Nintendo is mostly associated with being childish or making kiddy games. I have never played any games in this series.

    • Solomon_Kano

The thing is, what help would Nintendo have to offer? The games are already translated, we’ve had them before. The only thing Nintendo would be able to do is outright pay Sega to bring them, and that wouldn’t be worth it with Yakuza’s profile in the US combined with the Wii U’s sales. They’d be throwing away money and Sega would get a quick buck at no cost.

      • MrSirFeatherFang

I forgot to factor in how well it would sell… I have forgotten that this series isn’t that well known… I remember what happened with Sin & Punishment 2… I bought it at launch, but I’m pretty sure it sold very poorly. Nintendo was probably right for being very cautious on bringing Xenoblade over as well and letting Xseed handle Pandora’s Tower and The Last Story.
The only game I own is Dead Souls, although I have been interested in this series since I saw the covers of the PS2 games, although now I can’t find them anywhere locally.

        • Solomon_Kano

Yea, I’ve been meaning to get into this series as well, and I’d like to start from the beginning. The first two games aren’t exactly the most abundant, so I do hope see this (Wii U or PS3, or both, I don’t care, I just don’t think Nintendo will help in that regard.

In the case of Xenoblade, I don’t think I agree. Pandora’s Tower and The Last Story perhaps, but Xenoblade was always the highest profile of the 3. Even without all of the Operation Rainfall hubbub, that one always had a lot of attention. I remember IGN covering it extensively when it was revealed as Monado initially.

The wait only benefited its sales, I’d wager, but I don’t think the results would’ve been drastically different if they hadn’t hesitated to begin with. The Wii’s situation in NA wasn’t far removed from that in EU, but they got it far sooner.

  • British_Otaku

My god… I can’t afford to import consoles too… This region lock means even good news hurts.

    • Testsubject909

Kinda why I really like my Vita…

      I can import without worry.

  • Nitraion

Hmm i have feeling valkyria chronicle series is next….
Sequel, or compilation 1,2,3 then sequel…..

    • Luna Kazemaru

      pfft thats a good one

      • Nitraion

Yet i still wonder Nintendo have so good exclusive game deal on game company…
        SMT,Bayonetta 2, Fire emblem, Platinum recent games,Monhun 4, project x zone etc2…. lol
That must be really GOOD deal….
If Valkyria chronicle sequel on Wii U i’m totally not surprised at all…

        • Luna Kazemaru

And i honestly don’t see that happening. Then again sega is good at pissing people off

          • Nitraion

            Well yakuza once an exclusive….
honestly i didn’t see it coming until now

          • Nitraion

If you know neptunia game here some joke:
Neptune is good friends with blanc so trigger something like this is easy…
Blanc always read book and naturally smart at negotiation…
She have adorable sister so she know what most children want in their games
Meanwhile Noire is always developing new console and media… but she have so few friends… and she not good talking with people… meanwhile her little sister is more popular
and lastly Vert just have so rich and play lot of online and MMO games
Peasy said “I can play them all!!!”
            The end.

          • ronin4life

            It would make me happy…
And seeing as how it was A) never meant to be exclusive and B) not altogether too successful on Sony platforms(Especially in the west), I can totally see Sega trying to reinvigorate the series and have Nintendo help Globalize it. Hell, if ONLY to help globalize it.

  • Haku_Luvs_You

So I’m ashamed to say I’ve never played this series. But I’ve heard that people love it! If I were to jump in would I need to start at 1, or can I just play whichever?

    • AkuLord3

Of course its better to start at 1 since they’re all a continuing story, so if you start at the later games (3 and 4) you won’t understand most characters that show up. But good thing is that the games have a reminiscing bit so you can look at the past games and understand stuff. So if you can’t find 1 or 2, start with 3

      • Haku_Luvs_You

Awesome, thank you very much :)

    • badmoogle

I would advise you to start with #2.It has the best story in the series for me and it was the first to have the Japanese audio intact. The first game is unplayable due to the horrible English VA.

      • Haku_Luvs_You

Can you and/or @AkuLord3:disqus give me your thoughts on the Yakuza with the zombies. Worth Playing?

        • Testsubject909

From what I’ve gathered, unfortunately not played myself. Slightly clunky controls, but you do get to drive a forklift to run into zombies so you can sing this song:

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vx7ldTl7txQ

Edit: You also get to… go on… a date with a zombie hostess….

        • badmoogle

It’s a fun game after you get used to its controls but i’d suggest you play it after you’ve played 2,3 and 4.I think you’ll appreciate its characters more then even though its story is completely non canon.

    • Testsubject909

Pending how you are with dubs, go start with the first one, just don’t go completionist on it like I did, it gets very long since there’s quite a lot to do and many games to catch up to.

  • http://simplephilistine.wordpress.com/ Arla

This is an odd release unless they’re bringing the games to Wii U so to prep for a Yakuza 5 port or Yakuza 6 announcement. It might be why we haven’t heard of anything about a Yakuza 5 western release. Then again this is, for now, a Japan only release. Either way, it should be interesting what happens with this new Nintendo x Sega relationship. I hope it’s not just Sonic games. Nintendo is apparently in better terms with Japanese developers (Capcom, Platinum, Sega, Atlus) than they are with western ones. Aside from Ubisoft and indies that is. A plus for me since I’d rather play SMT x FE than Mass Effect 4 or Dragon Age III but not good for Wii U or Nintendo.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I am quite confused here. Is this HD remaster exclusive to Wii U or not?

    • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

      its already out on ps3

      • Ultima-X

        Since when?

        • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

Only in Japan, and quite a while.

  • Skyer Ist

This is unexpected… Maybe Yakuza 6 will be announced for Wii U later?

  • NeoAthanasius

It will be great to play these games on an HD tv, and have them look nice. The PS2 versions did not scale up with component cables and looked terrible on my tv.

  • Marco Tinè

I’m deeply disappointed about this, because it basically means that from now on, the Ryu ga Gotoku series won’t ever see the light of day outside of Japan. Thousands of loyal foreign fans who learned to love the series on PlayStation platform are being betrayed in the name of what? Sales on the internal market? Shame on me for harboring some faith and optimism on the gaming industry of today.

    • ronin4life

If it wasn’t coming, it wasn’t coming. Likewise, this wouldn’t keep it from coming over either.
No one is being betrayed by this.

      • Marco Tinè

You probably don’t care about the matter as much as I do. One publisher doesn’t wake up one day and say “ok, I’m not going to release this game overseas anymore” out of the blue.

There were probably discussion with Nintendo about how to handle the Yakuza franchise, and after what happened to Zero: Tsukihami no Kamen, I’m inclined to suppose that operations like this are part of the reason why other Yakuza games won’t release here.

  • Testsubject909

Hmm…. Well I ain’t complaining. Plus it doesn’t affect me, neither positively nor negatively.

Though on a grander scale from the perspective of gamers in general here, to specify, general. Many didn’t play it back on the PS2. Many didn’t play it on the PS3. This will enable the series to reach more people, so hey there’s that.

  • gamefreak86

Yes! I believe Nintendo will help release this. Never got to play before and could bring in some peeps who’d be unable to grab gta5 but would want a substitute. Hope Shenmue is on the horizon :)

  • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Look, I know this is supposed to be a funny meme or something, but let’s keep this stuff off Siliconera, please. There are plenty of other places on the net that you can do this sort of thing.

edit: All right, I’ve cleaned up the mess below. Let’s stay on track, please.

edit 2: OK, that’s enough trolling from you. Banned. I’ve seen enough of your comments history to know you aren’t ever going to contribute anything useful to discussions here.

  • Kenny Loh

well, actually i am very curious about what you write before because it get deleted XD

He copied and pasted Fragmaster’s FFXIII rant about it being on 360 but changed it to be about this.

    Also, Lightning64, don’t sass a mod.

  • badmoogle

    Yup ;)

  • badmoogle

    Yup ;)

  • brian

I’d see it as having a decent possibility if Nintendo publishes it, they do seem to market things they license pretty well.

  • Tom_Phoenix

If anything, a VC4 exclusively for the Wii U would almost ensure an overseas release, considering that would be about the only reason why they would want to release it on a home console instead of a handheld.

  • ronin4life

    I would love that…
3ds would be better… especially for a port of 3.

  • Luna Kazemaru

If sega didn’t let the IP go to anyone else pretty sure they wouldn’t give it up still.

  • landlock

I thought that was Namco Bandai. At least it was the last time I checked outside of Nintendo of course

  • Testsubject909

    I feel I missed a popcorn moment…
