Heavy Gear Assault Launches Kickstarter For Multiplayer Mech Combat

Heavy Gear Assault is a first-person multiplayer mech simulator that’s slated for release on PC, Mac and Linux next year. It’s set in the Heavy Gear universe that has been established through a series of tabletop, role-playing and card games, created by a hobby-games publisher called Dream Pod in 1994.

In the late ‘90s, Activision published two Heavy Gear videogames, following which the series went into hibernation. Assault is the first Heavy Gear videogame to be released in over a decade, and is being developed using Unreal Engine 4.

Heavy Gear Assault is being developed by Stompy Bot Productions, and is focused on the e-Sports scene with its emphasis solely on multiplayer. The game will let the player extensively customize their mech—called a “Gear”—and then take it online to battle against others. In addition to regular movement, Gears make use of their secondary movement systems, which come in the form of wheels or treads under their feet. They can naturally also be outfitted with a variety of weapons.

Since Heavy Gear Assault is entirely multiplayer-focused, Stompy Bot will be designing different kinds of social features to help players build a community for the game. Players will be able to create profiles, stream their matches and rate other players, while spectators will be allowed to “sponsor” their favourites using in-game currency as well as place bounties on the heads of unsporting players.

Heavy Gear Assault will be released as a free-to-play game, with upgrades and items available for purchase using real money. Additionally, a Premium Subscription will be available as well, which will allow you to avail discounts on items, invitations to prestigious tournaments and earn in-game currency and experience at a faster rate.

This morning, Stompy Bot launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund Heavy Gear Assault. On the game’s Kickstarter page, they say: “Mech games are pretty much dead according to large publishers. We aim to prove them wrong and to show them that the community has an insatiable appetite for mega-ton destruction. We want to push the technological envelope and show everyone what a true mech game can and ought to be. “

The Kickstarter campaign is being run in parallel to a separate crowdfunding campaign on Heavy Gear Assault’s official website. You can view that here.

So not only mechwarrior but now heavy gear too? Dammit all I want is a mech game with an awesome campaign like they used to have. Oh well great to see my fav two mech series from my childhood come back.

Agreed. I’d love if they could put Heavy Gear 2 on GOG. It runs on DX6 if I recall, and it simply won’t run on modern hardware properly, if at all. It could really use some patching to make it playable once more.

What a splendid game Heavy Gear 2 was. I’m sharing your feelings, guys. I hope someone could create something in the same vein, centered around a story driven campaign.

I’m actually planning to dual boot on the next machine I build just so I can play the Linux port of it, that is if I can figure out how to install it lol. This version was made to work with OpenGL apparently, so that may be my only option.

feel the same way. the mech genre kind of is dead if you want to do anything more than shoot your friends in their cockpits!

They just announced a single player mode with epic lore: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/stompybot/heavy-gear-assault-0/posts/490704

  • No

Multiplayer only? That is such a waste, the single player on Heavy Gear 2 was really fun. Also, am I the only one getting tired of e-sports?

Its sad to see these old veterans getting rejected by them ‘Venture Capitalists’ who think their awesome products just aren’t ‘fit for the current market’….so seems like a trend. Thankfully crowd-funding is still an option :)

The fans have been asking for it and Mektek and Stompy Bot have listened. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/stompybot/heavy-gear-assault-0/posts/490704

They’ve announced episodic single player military component to the game today. It’ll be available at the base funding level. The first chapter is going to take place during the War of the Alliance, a key historical even in the Heavy Gear timeline, that briefly united Terra Nova to fight a common enemy: Earth. As the line developer for the tabletop Heavy Gear game, I was thrilled to hear they were going with that period. It’s full of opportunities and best of all, the players will get to see a major player in the setting that wasn’t originally included in the base Kickstarter. Hovertanks and super soldiers versus players in Gears. Should be fun. :D

If anybody has questions about the setting fill free to ask. I’d be happy to answer them!
