Dragon’s Crown DLC Replaces Game’s Narrator With The Six Characters

By Ishaan . May 30, 2013 . 11:20am

Dragon’s Crown is getting downloadable content, Atlus USA have announced. This will be in the form of a character voice pack.

The character voice pack will allow you to customize your game with different narrator voices from each of the six playable characters—Amazon, Dwarf, Elf, Fighter, Sorceress and Wizard. Their voices will replace the game’s original narrator.

The DLC will be free for the first month after the game’s release on August 6th. Following that, it will cost $1.99.

Early adopter DLC? This is one form of DLC I definitely do not mind. Hopefully Dragon’s Crown won’t utilize the BAD sort of DLC, but I have high hopes for them.

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Bad DLC such as what? I would actually like to see character color palette packs in the future, unless that’s what you’re considering as bad DLC.

      • Mozendo

Yeah, I don’t see color pallates as bad DLC either. What I consider bad DLC is stuff that gives you advantages to other players such as DLC only skills, weapons, ect. (in any game in general). But if it’s something optional such as color palates that’s not bad at all.

      • Bloodios

Bad DLC = Deliberately cut out a chunk of the game story, then sell it as DLC.

        • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

I’m pretty sure Vanillaware is not one of the companies who would pull something like that.

    • I still think they should have kept this DLC from being day 1. At least release it after a month cuz… who’s gonna listen to the poor original narration voice actor now? ._. lol, I’m personally gonna play the game without the DLC for a while before I download them and switch to another voice.

      • Testsubject909

        I’m gonna.

I’m gonna listen to both versions.

        Because I’m like that.

  • Youko

It’s free for the first month, so even if you still don’t have the actual game by then, download this anyway and you won’t ever have to pay once you get the game. :)

    • ShadowDivz

I don’t think that really matters. People are still gonna complain for X reason.

      • Youko

Those people only have themselves to blame if they don’t pick up DLC that is gonna be free for a whole month.

    • Aoshi00

It’s good PS3 DLC works that way though. Unlike Gyakuten Saiban 5 on the 3DS, you need to boot up the game in order to d/l the free DLC w/in the newly released window which is 20 days. I had to have it shipped by air in case not to miss it, usually I just use SAL. For Vita too, you could d/l the DLC, but it won’t install until you start up the actual game.

Free DLC is great incentive, in addition to the artbook, hope Newegg would confirm in their description soon.

    • jumpman

Do you know for a fact that this will work? What if it’s only available from the DLC menu in the game, and not searchable on PSN?

      • Youko

I don’t see why it wouldn’t be available on the PS Store. Has there been any game on the PS3 that does that?

        • William Hsia

oddly yes, neptunia victory was like that.

  • DesmaX

Oh, kinda like that announcer DLC for Persona 4: Arena.

Even though those could be unlocked in-game

  • Neophoton

I’m okay with this, albeit I probably won’t ever really use the content. Still great for being free as an early adopter of sorts.

  • ShadowDivz

I was actually just gonna buy the Sorceress or Amazon’s voice(which ever is sexier) but if they are all free might as well get em all…

    • Firekitty

It sounds like it’s all the voices in one pack, to me, which is even better (And fairly reasonable for $2, in my opinion).

      • ShadowDivz

        That is reasonable for 2$

        • Testsubject909

I’d gladly pay that 2$. Atlus and Vanillaware deserves all the money they can get.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

I like how this sounds (zing!).

Hope it will kind of make it where the game is being told by a first person perspective, like a personal narrative. And I hope we get to hear the English voices soon.

  • Linhua

… it’s scary how companies like Capcom have created this evil thing-a-ma-jig-doo-dad where everyone else who is interested in extending their games with additional content have to be careful how they do it in order to avoid being lumped in with the ones who started this evil thing that I believe is known as something along the lines of Unnecessary Greed.

… I know at first it was like, y’know… better to just unlock the content IN-GAME but then wallets got tight for the developers and they had to come up with a new game plan and was like: “DLC!” and then people were like: “Okay..” and then they got greedy and people started turning into explosives and then ‘Today’.

… I guess when they came up with the whole ‘DLC’ what’s-it’s-like… they pretty much broke the stained glass of the industry at that point.

… companies been tippy-toeing over the shards ever since.

… MAN the audience is scary ._.||

  • 無尽合体ブランタコブスキ

Aw yeah, Asami Imai voice pack.

  • Zarx

That’s pretty nice, I’d have gladly paid for the Fighter(Seto Kaiba) and Sorceress(I-no from Guilty Gear) voice packs anyway.

  • Rentekabond

That’s cool and all, but…Can we actually HEAR the english voices anytime soon?

  • TheExile285

I hope Jonny Young Bosch voices Fighter

    *Holds up Flamesheild*

  • Cameron Ward

Um, no offense to anyone who is excited about this DLC, but we shouldnt have to pay for voice work….

*UPDATE*: I misread the article and honestly didnt see the part saying it was going to be free for the first month. now stop giving me a thumbs down over a stupid accident

    • ShimaPantsu

The article mentions it will be free for the first month.

      • Cameron Ward

oh well, that is better. I mean, im super excited for this game, but voice work seems like a silly thing to charge.

    • Testsubject909

I’ll be downloading it for free… Because I’ll be downloading it from within the first month…

      • ShadowDivz

See didn’t i say it in an earlier comment?!
People will always find a reason to complain!
Seriously, scroll down my comment is there.

        • Cameron Ward

I didnt see that it was going to be free at first. it was an accident

    • Suicunesol

Why not? Need money to pay voice actors, right?

    • mirumu

I’m fairly against DLC in general. I don’t like a lot of things they release as DLC, especially when it looks like they just pull them out of the game to sell as DLC down the line. This however seems like a really good use of DLC to me. It’s a nice little non-essential extra for the fans. Being free for the first month is a good incentive to buy the game too.

I kind of wish they did this for game translations. I mean if say English is the official language of the country, then by all means sell the game in English language with English voices, but then offer other languages as DLC for those that want them. I’m not suggesting they go to any more work to do this. They’re probably already translating the game for other markets anyway. Just take those and sell them worldwide for anyone that wants them. Wouldn’t be a big money maker I’m sure, but it wouldn’t cost much either and would give people less reason worry about importing and region locks.

      • Solomon_Kano

The only place I can think of that happening thus far is in Soul Sacrifice. I wonder if that did well enough for Sony to continue offering that sort of DLC in the future…

Well, guess we’ll never know. Unless they do it again, of course.

  • Spider-Man

    Sorceress narrator….me gusta.

    • Testsubject909

      So how’s Mary Jane?

      • Spider-Man

        You…how dare you….

  • KK

Cheap move IMO. Remember when stuff like this used to just unlock in the game? This is a prime example of a publisher taking something that should be free, via in-game unlock by completing the game, and turning it into a method for them to put some dirty money in their pockets, while gouging unknowing gamers and trying to make themselves look good by “giving it away” for free for the first month. Remember they already upped the price $10 on the Vita and $20 for the PS3 version…and cut X-platform play too. I will be buying used.

    • Neckbear

It’s free for the first month. If anything, it’s an incentitive for early purchases.

    • CptPokerface

Did you actually read what they said or just scrolled down to have your DLC rant?

    • ShadowDivz

It’s not like Vanillaware is some huge company like Square enix or EA. Why shouldn’t they make some pocket change on the side?

      • jumpman

Vanillaware is the japan-based developer, not the US-based publisher.
*THIS* is why we can’t have nice things. Gamers who don’t understand how the game industry works.
Actually, this is why we can’t have nice things: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ys7-6_t7OEQ

  • Solomon_Kano

Free DLC? Can’t say no to that. I mean, my whole game narrated by the Wizard? I’d have paid anyway.

    • Testsubject909

Some people below apparently do say no though.

      • Solomon_Kano

        Which still boggles the mind.

  • Amazon first, if I pick the Sorceresses voice I’ll probably die :3

    • Testsubject909

Screw that. I pick Sorceress first.

I’ll trust my skills to keep me alive and useful to any party I join.

  • SpecDotSign

This is pretty cool. I’m okay with this.

  • Bakuryukun

Oh sweet, it’s free if you get it in the first month? I already have it pre-ordered so I’ll totally get this.

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

I’m happy it’s free for the first month. Now I appreciate that greatly.

  • Alexander Aubert

no regret buying a new memory card. muramasa DLC, and now this. totally worth it

  • Learii

    free dlc yay

  • Omikuji

I really enjoy this sort of DLC, since it’s not story/unlocking characters or more levels on the first month. It’s just flavor stuff, and doesn’t change the gameplay of the game at all.

Unless the announcer is that bad that you need the dlc voices to not make you wanna throw yourself off a bridge. But I doubt it will be that bad.

Anyways, it’s also free for the first whole month, which is really generous considering. If it was just a week that would be sketchy to me, but a whole month is a lot of time to get free content.

    • ShadowDivz

Yeah… And to be frank i would have paid 2$ for the Amazon or Sorceress’s (presumably)sexy voice.
Or the elf girl’s (presumably) cute voice.

      • I would rather hear the Elf with a stoic voice.

  • ShadowDivz

Does ANYONE know where to get a wallpaper sized verson of the preview thumbnail used? I’ve been dying to get that image since i first saw it.
Everyone just relaxing and eating. Link please.

  • Nitraion

Hey i just got email from atlus about this….
Hmm the article kinda missplaced the first month free should be mentioned in the article title to avoid DLC whiner… i’m also DLC whiner too but free stuff even limited always welcome to me..

also surprised the revert price not so steep up… well this the beginning something good or bad… I hate if they included story DLC later on…

    • I’m going to do the same thing I tend to do with free stuff for a game I will purchase at a later date….go ahead and download it :P .

  • I sure hope we get these included in Europe too… when the game is even announced for a release date over here ^^;

    • Pure

Yeah nah, you’d better import that one. I think we’ll never see it across the ocean.

      • The problem is, I can’t afford to double dip on so many games as I already have been doing… so if they do release it here, I’d be conflicted to support the European version in the very rare chance that it comes here ;~;

With all this importing we’re doing, it’s no wonder European sales are not as enticing to these companies.

  • Spherix

And what nobody has reported on, or even asked about, is what language these voices will be in. Will we have choices? Will it be region-dependent? It worries me that they’ve left these details out, as the game moves closer and closer to release.

  • eliel

dose anybody know if this game gona have English dub[like Odin sphere :) ]or is it jap dub only like [Muramasa: The Demon Blade :c ]? If its jap dub only i don’t feel like the this dlc is woth geting for me…

  • YouGusta

Why not include in the disc?

    • MrSirFeatherFang

Well, it’s not free after the first month… so my guess would be to make money…
