Guess The Keyword For Metal Gear Solid V

By Ishaan . May 30, 2013 . 12:30am

Hideo Kojima has posed a question to Metal Gear Solid fans, asking them to guess a keyword associated with Metal Gear Solid V. On Twitter, Kojima writes:

“Gene” refers to Metal Gear Solid’s emphasis on genetics. “Meme” refers to Metal Gear Solid 2 exploring what you can do outside of genetics to shape someone, as in Raiden’s case. We’re not entirely certain about the “Scene” and “Sense” keywords associated with MGS3 and MGS4, but “Peace” for Peace Walker is self-evident.

So, what is the keyword for Metal Gear Solid V? Kojima won’t say yet, but he says it’s not “Love” or “Hope” or “Fate”.

Take your best guess! You can re-watch the GDC trailer for The Phantom Pain here, but keep in mind that The Phantom Pain and Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes are two separate games that both make up Metal Gear Solid V.

  • I’m guessing it starts with V.

    • Solomon_Kano

      Vile? Vice? Vote? lol

      • Vibe. I dunno.

        • Rohan Kishibe

    • Kev In

Close, it has a V in it, and it’s not for LoVe, it’s to LiVe.

  • Isaac Newton

    My guess is “Hate”

  • It’s probably a made up word like Revengeance.

    • JustThisOne

Baha, but with only four letters, it’s going to be difficult. xD

  • Chippy

    • KuchikiSentou

      • makubexnas

        • makubexnas

          or Lame.

  • kroufonz

    not love, hope, fate
    so Hatred, Despair, Choice?

  • It looks a lot more dark then the other games so …

  • OkamiKing

    Rebirth? Begyved?

  • KuchikiSentou

Free. The game is open-world players are “free” to tackle each mission when and how they want.

  • Alos88

  • Wake

  • Jason Zhu

since at this point in the story, Big Boss continues to lose his sense of belonging to anything (like MSF, The Boss, The Patriots, the US), and eventually attempts to establish Outer Heaven, a home for soldiers without countries.

Also, I think “scene” is about staging public displays, like the way that The Boss did to show her “changing” allegiences and finally being revealed that the whole mission was just an act to let her get the Philosopher’s Legacy.

“Sense” is probably about sensory-control, because nano-machines could suppress emotions to turn people into “senseless killing machines.” That, or the war economy destroys the senses and sensibility of major populations (if not a majority).

    • Jason Zhu

Also, there was a clause in the trailer that’s something like “… our new home.”

      • Trevor Nicolaysen

Don’t mind me, I’m just jumping on this bandwagon. I could see it being hate as well, but I’m gonna wager home.

      • Solomon_Kano

Ooh, that makes sense. Also, at the very end of Peace Walker I believe he also refers to Outer Heaven as “our new home” in his monologue. Coupled with his repeating that in the MGSV trailer, yea, I could certainly see that being it.

        I don’t have a Twitter to ask Kojima though…

    • Taylor Davis

That makes sense! I was going to say “Hate” but I think that’s in area of hope, love, and fate. Kudos to you!

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

I thought MGS4 was mostly about what Snake left behind for the next generation. Could that have something to do with Sense?

      • Colonel Custard

Snake didn’t leave anything behind. Snake had virtually little to no affect on the world in MGS4, it was all planned by Ocelot.

        • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Snake actually left a lot of things behind even though he could not have children. He left a big impact in the people he met. An impact on the world is just insane.

          • Colonel Custard

Alright I’ll take that but, still Ocelot saved the day.

  • Raze

I can only think of those three….

    • Solomon_Kano

Only 4 letters and ends with “e”.

    • SiliconNooB

Life looks like a pretty good guess to me.

      • Kev In

I thought the same thing at first, but now I am confident it will have a V in it. If it’s not for LoVe, it must be to LiVe.

        • SiliconNooB

          Could also be vitae/vita/vivi…

  • JustThisOne

If it’s not for love, then maybe it’s for hate. :>

    • Solomon_Kano

      Ahhh, beat me to it!

    • Kev In

If MGSV is not for LoVe, it must be to LiVe.

  • Tom

    Phantome Paine!

  • shuyai

(-_-) lol most people guessing dont notice it is a four letter word with e at the end?

anyway i guess “Time” since snake is so old or some random Latin word

  • Redichi24

    MGSV: Pain

  • Surf

  • Beef

  • amagidyne

  • Tonton Ramos

Since Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain combined together for Metal Gear Solid V.

  • Life

because…Rebirth and all that philosophical Kojima stuff

    • Kev In

I thought the same thing at first, but now I am confident it will have a V in it. If it’s not for LoVe, it must be to LiVe.

      • Live-A-Live X Metal Gear Solid lol, but that could be a good guess too :)

  • Seven Infinity

    That would be….FREE!

  • zweii

    • Juan Andrés Valencia

      Jennifer Aniston as Big Boss.

  • Bobby Jennings

I’m just gonna put a random one out there and say Pace.

  • konsama

    Fake obv.

  • Vesperion

The only true answer could be……

    • zaidandzhadow

lol i love that phrase? everyytime i read or hear it i roflmao

      • Vesperion

        You’ll never escape the la-li-lu-le-lo!

  • DuskSharkEX

Keyword, huh? Better go and see if Phillip can figure it out.

  • Namuro

    “Game” maybe?

Turns out Big Boss was playing a video game all this time, nothing was real!

    • zaidandzhadow

as he’s hughing his two sons Solid and Liquid ohh what a wonderful world *Runs crying*

  • “Sale”

  • Sef

    Rike. DIDJU RIKE IT?

  • Алексей Гришин

“Rape”, because Kojima really raped my brain with Hayter’s absence in the project.

  • PersonaSpace

I’m just going to say David Hayter.

  • Sergio Briceño

If it is “Wake” or “Rise” I’m seriously going to punch someone.

    MGSV: The solid snake RISES!

    • Ric Vazquez

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Oh yeah, Koji keeps ignoring Portable Ops. It’s like the orphan of Metal Gear.

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

    Mate? Take? Made? Cake?

  • Learii

  • Guest

    I am going with:
-Change (since this is Big Boss big start of darkness)
-Sane (since the Phantom Pain arc is anything but)

  • BenderIsGreat

    Is it “sausage”?

  • Guest

    “Save” ? :0

  • Gateott

The “scene” in MGS3 referred to the overall cultural landscape constantly shifting with the times. The Boss preached “loyalty to the end” as a way of staying true to your principals even when the “scene” changed who was good, who was bad, and who your friends and enemies were. As long as she was loyal to the end, it didn’t matter what her mission was.

That one kind of rides the line between sounding okay and sounding like melodramatic anime horseshit. I just looked up what “Sense” in MGS4 means and that one makes absolutely no sense (is that irony? I think that’s irony)

The game is based on the free play model.

  • Rohan Kishibe

  • vileBrenman

The theme is Snake. It ends in e. Hahaha….

  • vileBrenman

my second guess is jive. maybe snake learns the ways of the soul brotha.

  • The “scene” theme in MGS3 is meant to refer to the forces of history (the historical “scene”) and how they interact with and shape the individual, a la genetics in MGS1 and culture in MGS2. I’m pretty sure Kojima has said as much at some point, although I can’t remember when or where.

You got me on what “sense” has to do with MGS4, though.

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Q: The theme of MGS4 is “sense”. What exactly does that mean?

Kojima: When work started on it (MGS4), though, I began to wonder if my message of what we should pass on to future generations had truly gotten through, both to players and my team. After all, I’ve been conscious of the fact that this really is going to be my final Metal Gear, which means the team is going to have to continue the series themselves after I step away.

However, it hit me that maybe there are some things you can’t pass on. A person’s will, thoughts, and emotions aren’t encoded into their genes, and they aren’t a part of memes either. If you group together those remaining factors, you’re left with a person’s sense, and that’s the theme of the game this time around.
That’s why this is definitely my last Metal Gear and the end of Solid Snake’s story. There probably will be a Metal Gear Solid 5, but it’ll more than likely have a different world, characters, and story.

      Me: Did that make sense?

      • JustThisOne

        Woah, good find.

In that case, perhaps the four letter word we’re looking for could be more abstract than we thought.

      • About as much as anything about MGS4 is capable of making sense, I suppose.

  • Kevin Lor

I’m guessing a word with the letter V? Could be wrong haha

  • brian

Snake becomes a slave to it, ending up in a hospital in Phantom Pain with hallucinogenic side effects.
    This is too hardddddd.

  • Valtiel Ikari

“Face” seing how the guy in the trailer had no face, was disguised a “XOF” and how in the picture Big Boss has a prostic hand similar to the bad guy from Peace Walker, I would say that Fox Hound gets framed by the no face guy, disguised as Big Boss, fight for identity, his own identity.

  • prinnywin

  • “jehuty”

  • XiaomuArisu

  • Kev In

The Theme for MGSV is LiVe. It’s not for LoVe, it’s to LiVe.

  • Sergio Briceño

Dope. As in whatever the writer was smoking when he penned MGS’s story.
