Flipnote Studio 3D To Launch This August, Paid Service Detailed

Flipnote Studio 3D has a release date in Japan. Nintendo have announced that the Nintendo 3DS app will be available to Japanese users for free on July 3rd and in North America in early August.

Like Flipnote Studio on the Nintendo DSi, Flipnote Studio 3D will let you create flipbook animations, complete with pictures and sound, and now with stereoscopic 3D artwork. You’ll be able to create animations using three layers and six colours, and export your animations as .AVI and .GIF files for sharing.

Alongside the Flipnote Studio 3D app, Nintendo will debut their Flipnote Gallery: Friends and Flipnote Gallery: World communities. The former will let you share animations with your friends and will be free to access, while the latter will be a paid service lets you share your creations with the world.

In the case of the Friends community, you can keep a gallery open for 15 days and share it with up to 20 people. You can create up to two galleries at once and change them as many times as you like. You’ll also be able to download your friends’ creations.

Meanwhile, Flipnote Gallery: World will be free to access for the first 30 days after the service goes up. Following that, the service will cost $1 (100 yen in Japan) for every 30 days. However, even if you don’t pay for the service, Nintendo will run a daily free period from 3pm to 9pm.

There’s also a way to get free membership for 30 days through a point system. The points are based on ratings other users give your work. You can also earn points by being a curator of sorts, and creating collections of quality work from across the community.

  • That pricing model seems incredibly fair. I’m actually wondering if it will make enough to self-support its own servers.

  • $39420547

nice idea but i don’t understand the reason for a fee? wouldn’t be ok if you could share Flipnot creations on the 3DS Miiverse and be don with it?

    • Enzo

      The fee helps prevent spammers.

didn’t think of that but isn’t Miiverse being moderated by Nintendo and users can also flag things

        • Enzo

Flipnote Studio works differently than Miiverse to begin with. You also can’t simply ban people on the Flipnote just because the moderators think your submissions are junk.

    • AuraGuyChris

They do need to pay for the servers.

  • ronin4life

    That… is pretty cool actually.

I don’t like subscription based stuff usually, but this seems pretty neat.

  • DCBlackbird

uh oh…. I hope my nieces don’t hear of this…. two more 3ds’s to buy :(

    • AuraGuyChris

      Say good-bye to yearly $24.

  • AuraGuyChris

    Oh, $1.
The most reasonable price for a service ever thought of… I just wish all DLC in the world was $1.

  • Prinny Dood

    Thats Flippin awesome ; )

  • Aluminium Hat

    Sounds awesome!

  • Can’t wait there was some great stuff on the DS Flipnote. Can’t wait to see everything in 3D

  • Tg

So, each year will cost us $12? Not bad. :) Wonder if we could pay it all in one go after the 30 day free period?

    • azuelzorro102

That would be helpful. ^-^ No need to worry about the money, just pay it all and be carefree!! XD
