Deus Ex: The Fall Announced For iOS Devices [Update]

By Ishaan . June 5, 2013 . 7:17am

Deus Ex: The Fall is indeed a new Deus Ex game, but it isn’t for consoles… it’s an iOS title, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix announced this morning. The game takes place in 2027, and has you play as Ben Saxon, a former British mercenary that has been augmented. Here’s an introduction to the game:

Deus Ex: The Fall is a sequel to the Deus Ex: Icarus Effect novel by James Swallow, and picks up where the story of that book ends. Saxon was betrayed in some manner by his own private military employers, the Tyrants, and is seeking the truth behind a drug conspiracy.

Deus Ex: The Fall is a first-person game like the previous Deus Ex titles, and includes similar features such as cloaking, hacking, gunplay, takedowns and more.

The announcement of Deus Ex: The Fall comes after Square Enix’s recent announcement that the company would develop console-like games for smartphones and tablets.

Update: Deus Ex: The Fall will be available this Summer for $6.99/£4.99/5.99€.

Sadly this probably won’t fail. But what a fall it is.

      Square Enix: The Fall

  • Xmas Lopez

Seriously? This news is kind of bewildering. I never thought Square Enix was gonna go this far with that announcement. I can only wonder if they are prepared for the eventual fallout

  • Chris Yuen

This is why I don’t trust Square Enix’s teasers. Not after what happened to TWEWY. Once bitten, twice shy.

  • When Hitman IOS is gonna be announced? It would be lovely to use 47 with touch controls, just what any franchise needs.

  • Ni

    shitstorm incoming
edit: well, even dead space have a IOS game so I was already expecting this move from Eidos (but I thought Hitman would be the first)

  • ChiffonCake

    What the fuck.

    What. The. Fuck.

  • Tom

    (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

  • Ignoring the choice of platform for a moment, its storyline is apparently a sequel to a side-story and/or introductory-“prequel” in a different medium. I wonder how much that’s gonna affect the game’s sales in comparison to being on iOS.

Whatever. Seriously. Whatever. You should never get your hopes up with SquareEnix nowadays and I’m just being realistic here.

  • malek86

I’m still not sure why people think that mobile games are not allowed to receive hype.

    • Zharkiel

They are, is just that the market for mobile games and the original market for this franchise aren’t the same, so you really can’t blame them for being disappointed.

    • If it was a new game probably it would be different, but its a sequel of a game that came from the big places, to, not even mobiles, just IOs, apple exclusive lol, so yeah i feel their pain i guess, but if they wanted portable there are way too many better options…

  • Wake

I was wondering why they didn’t save this announcement for E3, this pretty much explains it.

  • Farid Belkacemi

    I… don’t know what to say :(

  • SirRichard

A teaser for an iOS sequel to a side-story novel that a lot of people probably haven’t read or even knew the existence of? Come on, Square.

  • anarchy_panty

    Good thing I’ve trained myself to never get excited about anything anymore. ;_;

  • MrTyrant

Oh boy, not this again SE.

  • I actually read that book. If you’re going to read it, do not read it aloud- as you’ll run out of breath on every sentence x.x

    • British_Otaku

Is it a good read? While most of the comments will understandably be rage, I want to know whether there is one piece of good Deus Ex media to pick up from this.

      • It’s different- the story follows two protagonists and jumps between them.
With Ben, it’s like an action shooter with a similar plot. With Anna- it’s stealth and a lot of introspection. When their paths converge- it’s more action for Anna and more introspection for Ben.
I enjoyed it (and it’s cheap as hell to buy).

        • British_Otaku

Thanks for the response. It definitely sounds worth a read.

I haven’t actually played any of the Deus Ex games, I’ve been planning to get Human Revolution on the Wii U and the original perhaps earlier on Steam or something. I’ll try one of them then have a look at the Icarus Effect novel, I’ll even give reading it aloud a go.

  • WhyWai

WTF Square Enix… keep apple devices for your own final fantasy shits… i hope nobody buy this… but apple users do buy these shits….

  • Herok♞

Wow guys you are really getting mad about this? Do you really think Square would just randomly announce a new full Deus Ex right before E3? If they do anything big with it we will learn about it next week so just relax for now. Also you guys complain about IOS and say it doesn’t have games for it and then when it gets real games you complain about that as well. This is why companies shouldn’t listen to fans you really don’t know what you want.

    • AkuLord3

“Also you guys complain about IOS and say it doesn’t have games for it
and then when it gets real games you complain about that as well.”

      Bro you serious?
      1. Noone said this or cared to say this, because IOS ain’t a fully gaming console so who would care if it had games
      2. People wanted A CONSOLE GAME SEQUEL, if it got on the IOS as well that’s fine but not like this.
How about joining in discussions when you understand things better, eh kid?

      • Herok♞

Thank you for enlightening me Senpai, I am such a foolish and unknowing kid who needs to be learn the ways of the world! All jokes aside, let me counter your arguments:

        1. Ok, IOS gets games all the time and some sell well, if no one cared then they would go “whatever” and move on,and no one would even try to make games or buy games for it, just because everyone on one page of one website has an opinion doesn’t make it the universal response.

        2. Wait you are telling me people wanted a console game sequel to a book no one has even heard of? BTW the proper way to argue that point would be people wanted another Deus Ex game for consoles. Because Deus Ex: HR was a prequel to the original Deus Ex with the Sequel being Invisible war. Timeline wise Deus Ex is already the sequel to HR.

How about joining discussion when you come up with valid responses that aren’t based solely upon assumptions, because you just made 3 assumptions, 2 of which are completely debatable with the last one of me being a Kid being out right wrong but nice try.

      • – iOS is a valid platform for software, and that includes games. It’s only a matter of making games that interface well with the hardware.

        – The story is a continuation of a side-story prequel novel; I’d hardly consider that a sequel to Human Revolution.

  • XiaomuArisu

    well maybe next year

  • Joshua Myers

  • This was pretty obviously not going to be a major title; I’m kind of surprised it’s even a game at all.

  • Sam

Well, like many, I won’t be playing this. I have an iPhone but I don’t game on it.

  • NeoAthanasius

Deus Ex is one of my favorite series. I shouldn’t have let myself get excited about this. Sqeenix knows just how to disappoint me.

  • …this is such utter crap.

  • Demeanor

Graphics reminds me of C12 from the psx era. I finished the first Deus Ex, but good thing I never fell in love with the series… this also gives me a deja vu, remember that April’s fool joke about deus ex 8 bit?…

  • Byas

    I never asked for this.

  • Kevadu

    I didn’t ask for this.

(Sorry, somebody had to say it…)

  • eilegz

another square enix way to piss its fans… oh well, at least im getting ff xiii-3 which hopefully end the story with a proper ending….

  • Not a platform begging post, but is the iOS market really that prosperous over other platforms? Just that Square-Enix made a lot of games on DS and PSP but they seem to be shying away from Nintendo and Sony.

Don’t care if it is iOS exclusive (it just gives me more reason to own one).

    • British_Otaku

Looking at it like that, there are a lot more owners of iPads and iOS smartphones than the 3DS and Vita (I don’t see us getting many worldwide titles on the DS or PSP anymore).

I don’t want to have to get two smartphones (probably an Android phone and iPad makes sense), but yeah, we should be taking the iOS platform more seriously. Perhaps we will when the Xbox One makes it’s mark and digital games being more widespread forces us to respect how there isn’t that much of a difference. >_>

  • Chim_era

Square enix does it again ….

Final Social Fantasy. I can see it happen, but maybe i am just too negative these days.

  • Z3

    Sasuga Square Enix!!!!!

  • Naux

    Who asked for this?

  • AkuLord3

Enix…i understand you want to make console like games on smartphones and such and that’s fine…but why not put those “console like” games also on…idk CONSOLES?! OMG?! MIND BLOW or should i say Mind Jack :p

    • Herok♞

If you put console like game on consoles, it would just be a console game or did that small bit of common sense slip your mind?

      • Syn

Its called sarcasm buddy, relax and take a chill pill.

        • Herok♞

I am relaxed but I see no need to pull punches when a person who fails at correcting me, says something really stupid in the same article.

  • Seraph

Inb4 game gets pushed back to Fall to fit the theme.

  • Strid

    No thank you.

  • WyattEpp

Hey, at least it’s not Deus Ex 2*.

    * Deus Ex 2 is merely a rumour, and never actually happened.

  • FetusZero

Welp.. that’s disappointing. I just went from an assured buyer to someone who will never buy it.

  • TheExile285

    WTF SE

    • M’iau M’iaut

Last I checked those handheld video game systems were pretty darn mobile. Come on, you know better :P.

      • Kai2591

        lol you got me ;)

        • M’iau M’iaut

Hey I’ve got enough folks being newslinked making unusual posts on old threads for my regulars to take up the habit!

  • isfuturebright

Who wants this? Really? Deus Ex is the last game I’d play on a iPad… God, why can people get it? It’s for casual one button games only. Not shooters.
