Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 To Focus On Free Exploration

By Ishaan . June 6, 2013 . 10:36am

Konami shared a new trailer for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 during their pre-E3 presentation this morning. You can watch the video below:

Lords of Shadow 2 will have a focus on freely exploring and walking all over the game’s world, according to developer MercurySteam, and without loading times.  The game is meant to be darker and more cruel than the first Lords of Shadow, and will allow players to play as Dracula himself.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is slated for release this Winter on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. You can watch Konami’s full E3 presentation, which includes developer comments on the game at this link.

Speaking as a good fan of Lords of Shadow, that trailer really didn’t need to go on as long as it did. And what the hell was that live-action thing after it? What was the point?

Still, it’s looking quite good, definitely going to give it a spin.

    • MrRobbyM

The live action thing was a a little funny bonus. It’s Mega64 on youtube. It’ll be easier if you just watch one of their videos than explaining it.

    • Solomon_Kano

Mega64. They’ve done stuff like that for Konami before, though it’s usually with Kojima.

I can’t wait for LoS2,its one of my most wanted games this year. I love 1 for a multitude of reasons, and 2 just looks (and from what they said) and sounds promising. I can’t wait to see what else Konami has to show next week

  • artemisthemp

Pre order the game after watching this trailer

  • I still have yet to play the first game, but I’m really looking forward to this. It looks like playing as Dracula is going to open the game up to a lot of crazy moves.

Also, huge props to Oscar Araujo for the music. I listened to the first game’s soundtrack and it was one of the best cinematic style soundtracks I’ve heard in a game yet. I’m also happy they avoided that obnoxious rising tone cliche near the end like you hear in so many game trailers nowadays.

  • NightzeroAX

I haven’t played the first game but I will now since I’m convinced on getting this, however I’m disappointed by the lack of Castlevania music that we all know and love.

    • Ethan_Twain

The first game did slide in one or two throwback remixes, but largely did it’s own thing. Which is kind of what you would want from a 3D Castlevania game, right? A remix or two to respect the past, and then chasing after it’s own muse the rest of the time.

The better question is, what tune(s) would you want to see done over with modern instrumentation for the game? I nominate an orchestral remix of the music from the Condemned Tower in Dawn of Sorrow, or a full on rock version of Praying Hands from Castlevania Adventure II.

      • Solomon_Kano

I wanna see Araujo try his hand at that in another form. It appeared in LOS’ music box already, but I need more!

        • Ethan_Twain

Oh come now, the original had only two remixes and what you want is just one of those again? Have some imagination man! What’s a Castlevania tune that would actually fit the Lords of Shadow setting and musical identity? What’s something that isn’t the most obvious answer possible?

Come on, I’ve read your posts around here. You’re a better nerd than this.

          • Solomon_Kano

Hey, it’s my favorite theme in the entire series! Imagination be damned! But fine lol, my vote goes to this:

It’s completely opposite LOS’ sound, so I’d like to see how Araujo would go about adapting it. Throw an epic coat of paint on this baby, and he could make an amazing track… amazing-er!

        • Ethan_Twain

Yes, that is an excellent nomination. What would you want done with it? I almost feel like the way to go would be to go back to the original mix in Castlevania DXC with it’s choral opening. I feel like they could do the undertones of the entire song with vocals and then throw the melody up above with strings/harpsicord/whatever. That would also fit the Lords of Shadow musical identity well, they do a lot of vocals.

  • Solomon_Kano

But is it late 2013 winter or early 2014 winter? I need this in my liiiiiiiiife.

Trailer was sick though. The recycled footage was getting to me at first but once the new stuff started rolling, man. Oscar Araujo’s bringing his A-game again as well.

  • z_merquise

After reading that Nietzsche quote, now I’m wondering if Dracula will also say something like “Are you a man? A dog? Or a monster?”

    Anyway, that’s an amazing trailer.

I am miserable little pile of secrets. But enough talk… Have at you!

  • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

They keep saying Exploration. It’s bizarre cause originally they were all about being Classicvania…

    • CudaBiro

They did classic Castlevania, now they’re evolving to Metroidvania. I suspect at some point they’ll bring out a fighter as well.

      • Solomon_Kano

This is Mercurysteam’s last Castlevania, so no dice on that.

    • Solomon_Kano

They’ve said for a good long while now that there would be more exploration in LOS2. The idea was never that they’ll always be about Classicvania, but that the first game was most inspired by the classic series. Most prominently, Super Castlevania 4.

      • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

I dunno, I suppose it must have gotten lost in transition on me with the way Cox seemed to like to bad-mouth the Metroidvania Castlevania games.

        • Solomon_Kano

Bad-mouth? When? Aside from that “thousand useless swords” comment people keep going back to, I haven’t seen Cox say anything remotely negative about the Metroidvanias, just that they weren’t being looked to for the original LOS.

          • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

Mostly it’s not in him saying specific bad things about older games, but claiming his games are so superior. I remember reading one Spanish article where it was particularly bad… Unfortunately I can’t find it… the Comparison of his Castlevania games to the well liked Nolan Batman movies and IGA’s Castlevania games to the mostly despised Tim Burton Batman movies is an example that comes off the top of my head. I’d probably need to do some more research to find others.

          • Solomon_Kano

Cox compared LOS to Nolan’s Batman, but he didn’t make the comparison of IGA’s work to Burton. The statement was that LOS was, like Batman Begins, a dark origin story. He even used the phrase “Dracula Begins”. I remember that well.

  • Charza

    This looks great !
And even better ! The original Lords of Shadow will be released on PC !
It already looked amazing on the consoles but on the PC it will reach it’s true potential.
Man I love this reboot !

  • Richard N

I swear to gawd if they don’t somehow have Bloody Tears in this one I will go out on the street, find a hobo, and hire him to take a dump in the sink at Mercurystream’s employee lounge.

  • AaqibRawat

…….. i need to see more

wonder how the sword combat will play.

  • Valtiel Ikari

the first one didn’t catch me. Mirror of fate made me pick interest.
This right here, was badass as hell!!

  • Strid

Heh, Deus Ex: HR styled music kind of made me forget how terrible the first two games are (LoS and MoF). If this one turns out to even be half-way decent I’d be surprised.

  • SoundMatch

3:16 Okay I’m buying, haven’t used Ifrit in a while.

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Looks awesome! I wonder if we will alternate between Gabriel and Dracula to try different skills

    • Solomon_Kano

      But Gabriel… Dracula…

Hard to say without spoiling anything, but have you finished LOS?

      • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Yep. I know the two are actually———–

        • Solomon_Kano

Ok. So, yea, no switching. The entire game takes place with Drac and Alucard in medieval times and then with Drac and Zobek in the future (present?), so unless there’s 3rd timeline they aren’t talking about, I don’t think we’ll see Gabriel.

  • Hector Velar

yes yes yes…pretty CG trailer, yes yes most games nowadays do. Oh but look it has boobies, but boobies will sell right? Lets actually look for what is behind the curtains err CG Trailer. Another crappy to mediocre 3D castlevania game with Satan rather than Dracula being the main villain. In the first one they tried to mimic Bayonetta’s gameplay and failed badly it was so boring and slow. None of the 3d castlevania has ever compared to any of the 2D metroidvanias and they will never be as good. true Castlevania fans know that the series died long ago with the Nintendo DS. they have gone so far from what castlevania was about and played like, so disapointed with you Konami. Killed the series from taking away what fans want and giving them what they think they want from observing sales from other games that has blinded you. It is so sad, still wanting a true castlevania game with 2D game play, challenging, addictive focused on exploring and learning from your mistakes. Bring the metroidvanias back!
