“Nosgoth” Is A Multiplayer Game Set In The Legacy of Kain Universe

By Ishaan . June 7, 2013 . 9:00am

Square Enix will be publishing a game called Nosgoth that is set in the same universe as the Legacy of Kain series, but is not a traditional Legacy of Kain title, Square Enix have confirmed to VG247.

“Nosgoth exists and is in active development, but is not a traditional Legacy of Kain action-adventure game”, Square Enix community manager George Kelion said to the website. He added: “Nosgoth is set in the same universe as previous LoK games, but on a different branch to the Blood Omen and Soul Reaver series. The community should not be thinking of Nosgoth in terms of a single-player experience.”

Additionally, Kelion also confirmed to Eurogamer that Nosgoth is not being developed by Crystal Dynamics, the studio that worked on the previous games in the series.

Nosgoth was noticed listed in the Steam database last month. Kelion clarified that Square Enix wanted to put a statement out in order to give people context. He also clarified that the game would not be at E3 and will be revealed at a later point.

On one hand, woot, LOK is back! On the other hand… multiplayer, not developed by CD… sounds like F2P or mobile to me. I just have this nagging suspicion.

Can’t say I’m too thrilled. LOK is one of the few series where the story and dialogue are important to my enjoyment. I’d rather have another single-player experience.

(I wonder if my nickname will make an appearance again?)

Damn it. Where’s my sequel to Defiance!!?? If ever a cliffhanger must be answer, I’d go with this, my 2nd favorite series ever (first is MGS. iI just love how this series had two sagas to help detail the series, and how it ultimately helped you understand the characters and their motives. Such a cinematic undertaking done better than most have this generation. Granted it too 5 game, but their all so worth it, especially defiance

    Someone is anorexic.

  • $7573679

Just don’t let it be an MMO.

  • Landale

I recall reading somewhere years ago, can’t remember for the life of me where though, that the initial plan for the series was to focus on the world, not Kain’s story specifically, which is why the first game has the titling reversed compared to everything else. Basically it was going to be Blood Omen 2: Someone else, Blood Omen 3: Someone else again, that sort of thing.
Now, assuming this is true and assuming by “a different branch to the Blood Omen and Soul Reaver series” they’re going to continue off from Blood Omen’s sacrifice ending for an alternate timeline, I could see this working out well potentially, depending on what they mean by multiplayer and how well they handle writing the story.
Vampires would be gone unless someone tries to recreate them yet again or we get to deal with their wraiths, leaving humans, werewolves who seemed to have dropped off the face of Nosgoth after the first game, demons, and the hylden still present for potential conflicts.

Talk about developing games nobody asked for.

    • Landale

It’s been asked for constantly, and by those people it’s also been acknowledged at the difficulty of continuing from where the series was. Several key people involved with the series are dead or at other companies, and plotwise unless they started throwing in more twists all that was left was for Kain to kill the Elder God, put the Soul Reaver where he would eventually find it in Blood Omen, and then what. Even with him able to properly be a member of the Circle, the purpose of the Circle would finally be served and there’d be no point.
Taking the series to look into someone or something else’s perspective, and likely on one of the bad timelines gives them the chance to continue the story despite these things.

I’ve read the pleas for another Legacy of Kain game, not a multiplayer game set in the Nosgoth universe.

      • TrevHead

The rumor mill was pointing towards a Soul Reaver reboot, but this news is a hell of a letdown.

I’d rather play a games that developers want to make rather than what fans want. Idk… because developers are more creative and actually know what theyre doing. i also don’t want them to force out a game if they have no ideas to begin with. it’ll either ruin the series or make a crappy game ie a sequel to any game they have that fans keep begging for.

      • http://simplephilistine.wordpress.com/ Arla

So you would rather have a developer make something they want instead of something you want? That doesn’t make sense but OK.

    It’s a racing game

    • Landale

Lies! It’s Vehiculum Furtus Maximo under a new name! Turns out it wasn’t an April Fools joke, it’s just been in development for 10 years.

  • SirRichard

So you resurrect an old, favourite IP of many people, often remarked upon for its writing and story (what if the coin landed on its edge, etc) as a spinoff vaguely multiplayer game not from the original developer studio (who are actually still afloat, unlike a lot of these revivals).

This smacks of reviving something for a quick F2P phone game, honestly, it’s not sounding promising at all.

    • Firekitty

      Yeah, that’s my worry, too.

I mean, I could see an MMO based on the world being pretty cool if they really put their backs into it, but given the recent slew of cheapo browser and ios games SE’s been churning out, I’m not too hopeful.

    • TrevHead

This sort of stuff seems to happen all the time with Japanese IPs and reusing characters and worlds in spinoffs and cross overs etc, looks like they are trying the same trick with western games.

However I think western fans will be less receptive than the Japanese equivalent, especially when we haven’t seen a LoK game in a decade.

      • Warboss Aohd

I don’t fink dey thought dis through.

  • Tom

It’s not Soul Reaver, it’s not Blood Omen, not developed by Crystal Dynamics. What should I be excited about?

    • Ethan_Twain

Nothing. They haven’t said anything about the game, so there’s no reason to feel anything about it at all.

      • Landale

What about feeling curious? As I pointed out below there’s a lot of ways they could take this, and not many ways they could’ve continued from where they left off.

    • arrestedswitched

Not to mention, it won’t be written by Amy Hennig.

I think I liked this game better when it was a speculated sequel to Defiance. :(

  • Derek E Nay

I would prefer to have a Zelda/Darksiders type of game like the original was. But, I do not mind the change the gameplay a bit. I am glad we are getting something that gives us more Nosgoth lore.

  • TrevHead

I just want to know what the target demographic this is meant for? As considering most fans would want a singleplayer story driven game.

This smacks of Square digging up old IPs to shoehorn into an existing game.

  • Solomon_Kano

I’m calling it now, it’s a MOBA. Everybody’s trying to cash in on those right about now, so I think that’d be likely.

  • Lester Paredes

Okay, well, there goes any of my enthusiasm for this game. I was excited for this, now Squeenix, you’ll have to earn my interest back. Just, make sure it doesn’t suck and I’ll probably go along with it.

    I miss Soul Reaver. :D
