Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Gets A Graphic Director’s Cut Trailer

By Ishaan . June 11, 2013 . 12:00pm

Konami have shared a lengthy 9-minute extended cut trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. They caution that it contains graphic content (fair warning—it really does), and that you can choose to view a less graphic “Standard” version here if you like.

ok, still no mention of the game being on PS4.

    I’m worried…

edit: the game looks REALLY good though

edit2: nevermind. somehow i missed the PS4 logo at the end of the trailer

    • Anime10121

Did you not see the end of the trailer? It explicitly lists ps4 among console releases.

    • CaptSarge

Look at last seconds where there are platforms listed. There are PS4, PS3, Xbone and 360

    • Anime10121

      Screen cap

      • Guest

Dammit, all I saw was PS3? How the hell did I miss that. Anyway thanks

    • Oliver Oyanedel S

In the trailer is confirmed for PS3, PS4 & the other 2

  • jeka69

Just a friendly reminder: This trailer is truly disturbing.

That something at the end though *drolls*

    • Spicydicey

      Why so gory?!
I hope it stays the Metal Gear I know :(

      • jeka69

Well Kojima indeed said that this game is what holding his line in the game industry. At first I thought he’s exageratting. After seeing this trailer, I think he’s not.

      • Ninastars

It’s obvious Kojima wants to take Metal Gear into a new, more mature direction. And when I say “mature” I don’t mean it in the sense people generally see it but as but genuinely heavier themes.

        • Spicydicey

Well in any case, I have to applaud Kojima for seemingly including the topics of race and child soldiers. That’s the intellectual kind of mature I can definitely get behind.

          • idrawrobots

            and torture

          • Glasnova

I could’ve swore that’s been a topic for ages. Gray Fox & Raiden were kids but I suppose this is dealing with it first hand. I wonder what we’re going to hear about Ground Zeroes.

          • benhofb

Right? From what I understand, aren’t they two separate games? I mean, we’re getting all this MGS5 news but we still don’t really know about GZ.

          • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

But can he handle it in a tasteful way? Child soldiers, being a real thing, is some heavy shit. It’s not a KGB agent with power over bees, or stealing brains to use in cyborgs.

      • Kai2591

yeah…I have mixed feelings about this.

  • XiaomuArisu

    Mini Metal Gear!
    Extended Hype

  • Byas

Kojima wasn’t kidding about fearing that the game wouldn’t be lauched for dealing with “heavy themes”.

    • Kai2591

      oh. my. God.

that is wayyyy mature than MGS has EVER been!

not sure if I will be able to handle it…*barfs*

  • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

Did they just… remove a bomb from that guy? “Hurt Locker” style?

    • benhofb

Pretty sure that was a chick actually… Looked like she had breasts in one of the shots.

      • Gohobojoe

Not just any chick. It’s Paz. The three people standing around here are Big Boss, Kaz, and Chico.

  • Curan_Altea

God that was an amazing trailer. Looks like there’ll be plenty of things I’m not looking forward to in this game….. In a good way.

Still want to know what’s up with that horn. Is it a piece of shrapnel?

  • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

Also: ZANZIBAR LAND. That is why Big Boss is in Africa. It all makes sense now.

    …sort of.

  • Eddie

Metal Gear is one of the few game stories thats worthy of an Oscar. If directed by the right people with the right cast it would make an amazing film.

  • Go2hell66

Good thing i haven’t had time to watch the 1st trailer yet, now i get to watch it with all the H-Scenes :D

    • neocatzon

What do you think about the “H-scenes”? :D

      • Go2hell66

yea they were pretty nasty, no seriously

please do not watch this trailer, if you are under 25 yrs old
thats how bad it is :p

        • neocatzon

Agree, we can see what’s under the cloth (and skin) uncensored. 25 yo, well that’s a high bar.
Kojima just upped the seriousness in mg.

  • JoJo_649

Then Ground Zeroes is something akin to The Tanker Incident from MGS2 and Virtous Mission from MGS3?

    • benhofb

That’s kinda what I’m thinking at this point. I mean, we’ve gotten no info on GZ for awhile so…

  • Colonel Custard

Nice this is probably gonna be the most delicious MGS game ever calling it the theme is self destruction through pain.

  • Scallion

Wow, that was pretty brutal. It’s been a while since a video game made me wince. Hopefully the gore won’t be gratuitous, but I have a feeling they’ll handle it well–that scene with the peace package… Everyone was struggling to stay composed while it was going on,and you could see their sadness and disgust written on their faces, hidden beneath their grimaces. The waterboarding scenes were especially chilling–their shallow breaths were heaving against the fabric of the masks… I’m glad that they’re going to use the engine to enhance their storytelling.

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

Before watching it “Graphic director’s cut? Yeah right…”

10 minutes afterwards: “So this is Metal Gear Solid plus Guinea Pig: Flower Of Flesh And Blood plus Africa Addio plus Jack Bauer? OH MY GOD! *throws up*

  • Bob Obb

Putting a bomb inside Paz? That’s some fucked up shit… I actually liked her. Somehow I don’t think she or Chico survive the blast.

    • ShadowDivz

      Holy crap that was paz?!

  • King mogz

Urgh….the new VA for snake is terrible. At least David’s voice had that gritty sound to it which made Snake sound like Snake.

And yeah, that bit about taking a parcel out of that kids stomach….interesting. May as well just shoot him with a bullet first instead of making him suffer like that lol (looked like he died after it got removed anyway)

    • Richard N

David Hayters’s voice was definitely way more gritty, but Keifer Sutherland sounds a lot more natural and real. Which seems to go along with what this one is going for. Also, with the young kid likely being Liquid, I can only imagine Solid showing up somehow.

      • Testsubject909

“real” only to the way we’re trained to believe what a voice is “real” in an artificial world such as that of Cinema and Television.

Honestly reality is stranger then fiction and you do find a lot of real people who would speak in ways that you would deem “not real” in fiction…

That said, this isn’t a jab at either of those voice actors. I have no problem either way, it is sad not to have Hayter again, but what’s done is done and to me, it’s something I can move past.

        • Richard N

          Uh…. okay…

      • Glasnova

As much as I love David Hayter’s voice, I think it might make sense. If he was in a coma for 9 years his voice is going to be a little different.

It gives me hope though, If Ground Zeroes is a prequel to The Phantom Pain it might make sense that David Hayter reprise the role in that. It’s not like Kojima to be a master of the bait & switch or nothing.

  • Anime10121

I just hope that the ESRB doesn’t make this difficult to release as is Kojimas original vision. I hope he doesn’t have to cut out stuff like this outta the actual game because the ESRB is afraid of the storm that’ll unsue when the mass media catches wind of it ( and when they do, there WILL be a storm).

God I hope this thing retains its vision!

    • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

I seriously doubt the ESRB will have a problem with this. If they let one God of War game after another pass untouched, nothing will bother them.

      Except for sex.

      • Anime10121

God of war depicts a man taking down monsters/gods, this is a man literally tearing a child’s stomache open to get out a bomb. It’ll be taken more into consideration since it isn’t fantastical in nature.

Though hopefully my worries are for naught, and it releases without compromise.

        • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

God of War III depicts a man’s face literally being punched in, another man’s head being torn off in slow-motion, a first-person scene of a character having his eyes gouged out, and all sorts of other pornographically violent bilge. If that can make it past the ESRB intact, this game is going to be fine.

Plus, you’re forgetting the most important aspect here – Konami is a big publisher with lots of money. That gives them the ability to put those pesky ESRB folks in their place.

          • Anime10121

Lol true. Haven’t played GOW3 in a long while, so I didn’t remember graphic violence against human characters.

    • ShadowDivz

I have a feeling the ESRB will be afraid of the storm.
But honestly, it’s things like this, that aren’t afraid to push boundaries that are truly awesome!

      • Anime10121

True dat my brother/sister. True dat :)

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Kojima almost cancelled the game in early 2013 due to this. However since he is releasing it, it looks like it could be approved. Still, the content from the trailer is really sick.

      • Anime10121

Hopefully you’re right, but I just see a srorm a’brewing with the realistic depiction of someone digging through a human child’s stomache to get a bomb out. God I hope his vision remains uncensored!

  • Göran Isacson

2:44 Who’s that with Revolver Ocelot?

I like how he makes so much noise crawling yet no one hears… and that the sniper is the only one NOT dressed for any kind of warfare (beside the boy) because boobs. Also what was up with the strange dissapearing eyeshadow? Anti-glare paint that retracts into the skin?

I wonder if Code Talker is one of the Navajo code messengers in World War 2, sounds like it fits in with the general theme of betrayal and everything being miserable. I also wonder if those African child soldiers will be actual characters, or if their presence will be as important as that African president who got iced in Revengeance in the intro act…. despite the game being all about Zanzibar Land and Outer Heaven and THEIR LAND and so on. That aside, torture, suffering, betrayal and misery… or as Revolver Ocelot would call it- a slow Tuesday. Can’t say I’m overly shocked, I need to be a bit more grounded in the plot before I can make the call if this is just horrible violence for horrible violences and hamfisted messages sake, or if it’s actually going to be real, heartstring tugging and gut punching.

  • ShadowDivz

Man im not a hardcore metal gear fan(yet) since ionly played peace walker.

But not only do the graphics look crazy sick, i have a feeling the story is gonna beeven more awesome!

Also, WHAT THE FUCK DID THEY DO TO KAZ?! I loved that guy in peace walker! He was so awesome, so cool and a total bro! A true brother in arms! …This is unforgivable.

Everybody responsible is getting a fucking bullet in the head.

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Time treated Ocelot poorly. It’s the 80s and he looks just like in the 2000s. Wasn’t this guy younger than Big Boss?

  • Nitraion

    Wow so gory…o_o
I think it’s all in one game i need action, gore and i think there will be slightly horror in this one

  • Kimchi

Hmm, I know this is a very loose prediction, but “phantom limb pain” is a phenomenon that occurs primarily in victims of amputation. The victim will experience varying degrees of distinct pain, in the area of amputation. Since this MGS game is titled “The Phantom Pain”, it may be centered around the literal “phantom pain” Kaz feels, as a result of amputation, and the metaphorical “phantom pain” that both him and Big Boss feel, as a result of the numerous comrades lost over the years. On a lighter note, HA. LETS SEE HIIMDAISY MAKE A PARODY OUT OF THIS.

  • http://strictlyapathy.comoj.com/ SoulArbiter

The darkest Metal Gear title; thematically and atmospherically. This one looks like it’ll be a cracker!

  • Kai2591

    He’s pulling a ‘No Russian’.

  • fresh-hell

    looks great can’t wait
