Watch Monolith Soft’s Brand New Open World Wii U Game In Action

By Ishaan . June 11, 2013 . 8:09am

Nintendo and Monolith Soft have shared a new trailer for X, their upcoming game for Wii U. The game is an open-world title that focuses on seamless exploration, and is slated for release in 2014.

In the game, you’ll also get to ride “DOLLS,” the large mechs you see in the trailer. These will be capable of traversing both the land and the skies.

I’m really excited for this game! Gorgeous graphics! Gorgeous music! Open world! I figured they would give a proper name for it by now.

  • badmoogle
  • Brandon001

Okay, sick and all but, please dont let DOLLS be the final name for the mechs.

    • Why? Personally I think it’s a cool name, but I’m curious as to what sets it off for you.

      • John Diamond

dolls just don’t really suit it in my mind tbh. it seems rather ‘feminine’ a word to use, compared to anything else

        • XypherCode

Well “Dolls” are kinda common in Animes, very much referring to Humanoids, Cyborgs or Marionettes.

          • John Diamond

i don’t really watch much anime tbh, so that’s pretty new to me.

    • FFmax

Well since it’s all in caps it’s probably an acronym for something.

    • kool_cid414

Would action figure make you happy?

      • Brandon001

bruh, who are you, go away.

        • kool_cid414

          just making a joke

  • Ni

Xeno games are awesome and since I played Xenogears and Omega Boost I had fallen in love with mechs and games that has them.
FF XV (who also has mechs o/) and X are my top priorities games right now.

    • XypherCode

      Same! + KH3 :)

      • Anime10121

<3 you both, my 3 most hyped games, KH3, FFXV, and Xeno-somethingoranother!!!!

        • XypherCode

          We need JRPG love XD

          • Kai2591

we need JRPG AND mecha love!

          • Well, if you need more (J)RPG and Mecha love… Operation Hotblood is fighting for the localization of Super Robot Wars OG games. They would like all the support they can get.

          • Kai2591

Unfortunately I’m not into that kind of mecha game….
but good to know its getting support :)

          • I see; I understand. Maybe the strategic RPG gameplay behind it is off-putting but it is really fun with all the customizations and just how epic and diverse the giant robots and their attacks are. But I digress. Still we need more JRPG and Mecha love. So, I’m happy that at least X comes…

          • Kai2591

you are correct, I am not into Strategic RPGs.
that and I don’t prefer the mix of different series in one game kind of thing.
But I hope you get the games you want ;)

          • Oh no, don’t get me wrong. You’re talking about the SRW games; I’m talking about the SRW Original Generation games. The OG series only contains giant robots and characters that have originally been made by Namco Bandai/Banpresto. Trying to bring a normal SRW over to this side of the planet would just be impossible, but the OG games can achieve it (that’s why Sanger Zonvolt is appearing in the upcoming Project X Zone).
But thanks for your kindness :).

          • Just Tim

“Trying to bring a normal SRW over to this side of planet would just be impossible…”

Since pre- and post-merger Namco Bandai already pulled it off with SEGA Japan via Virtual On, they can do it with other gaming companies, if it wants to make history with an SRW line-up with only videogame mecha…all at the expense of no Holy Trinity.

But yeah, it’s safe to say that Namdai’s current state is using Project X Zone as a gauge for an SRW proper (OG at least), given Herr Sänger Sombold’s inclusion in PXZ’s char. roster.

          • Sure, a only video game crossover COULD BE possible. But since only Virtual On has ever showed up in SRW games, it’s still merely speculation to this point.
On your last statement, you’re not the only one who thinks that way… however, I can’t help but doubt it. Obviously, PxZ is for all the Sakura Taisen, Street Fighter and DMC fanatics. If Namdai was truly interested in perhaps seeing if the westerns want more of Sanger, they would have… I don’t know, show Sanger in the past trailers?

          • Just Tim

            1. True, but it never hurts to think. It shall be ultra-hilarious if Windom XP mecha actually appeared in an SRW. xD

            2. I understand your doubts. So far, did Namco Bandai show their own characters’ segment of PXZ’s trailer? I already saw the Capcom segment.

          • 1. Aren’t Windom XP mecha not just mobile suit Gundams?

            2. Since I am a huge SRW OG fan and admirer of “Herr Sombold”, I haven’t noticed his appearance in the past trailers so far. It’s a shame that he’s only a solo support unit, but looking at the bright side… you can pair him up with any playable group if you want to add some awesomeness.

          • Just Tim

            1. That reminds me of the Hückebein situation going on in OGverse.

            2. So far as I know, Namco Bandai still hasn’t released a trailer to their segment of PXZ’s roster. Hopefully, it’s not yet released.

And yes, I’m using Gratuitous German.

          • Oh, I don’t mind the Gratuitous German, I find it funny. It’s funny that Sanger is German while he acts like a Samurai most of the time. He’s basically a European Graham Acker, but I guess Graham Acker is more of an American Sanger because Sanger existed first.

          • Kai2591

ah, I see, that’s how it is. haha sorry for my lack of knowledge on this matter hehe. and no problem :)

          • XypherCode

Interesting. Are there any other games on their list aside from SRW?

          • At the moment, Operation Hotblood is fighting for SRW OG games, in particular the ‘recently-released’ 2nd Super Robot Wars OG for the PS3. They also support the localization of Project X Zone. Maybe they’ll fight for the localization of other games in the future, but for now, it’s SRW OG.

      • Ni

        how could I forget Kh 3? D:

    • There’s also Super Robot Wars OG games, in particular 2nd SRW OG for the PS3. Operation Hotblood is fighting for the localization of that awesome game, and they could really appreciate all the support they can get.

  • Anime10121

All of my wants Nintendo, TAKE THEM (along with the monies)!

  • anarchy_panty

I’m not that big on JRPGs, and even I think this looks absolutely incredible.

    • MogCakes

The open world aspect reminds me more of WRPGs than a JRPG.

  • Richard N

Man those are some awesome looking Gea-

    -I mean Dolls!

  • gk2012

    That X at the end…

…reeks so much of Xenogears’ logo.

Hopefully there’s some kind of connection between the two games.

    • Anime10121

Agreed, although, Square Enix would have to be involved (considering they own the Ip).

    • Ferrick

the X is more towards xenoblade and lesser towards xenosaga, from the looks of it, it may be xenoblade’s sequel

      • LightZero

No it’s more like Xenoblade in gameplay but it’s more futuristic like Xenosaga. Hopefully the story will be more like Xenogears. That would be my perfect game.

        • Ferrick

well considering that at the end of xenoblade, both factions get together, there’s a chance that this may be a direct sequel off xblade, especially considering that one of the maps had the remnants of xenoblade’s world

      • The “X” has the same font as Xenoblade’s logo, but the same coloring as Xenogears’. Which is definitely not a coincidence.

      • Kaihaku

I agree. The first trailer had Shulk, it may be introducing some elements of Xenosaga/Xenogears but it’s definitely in Xenoblade’s “universe”. Of course, I use the term universe lightly considering the ending of Xenoblade.

        • Ferrick

well the ending of xenoblade did allow the overall story to be able to have a continuation

    • Ni

We could make a theory about how they are connected and that will be as mindfucked as the Xenogames usually are ;p

      • Ferrick

and then it turns out, xenoblade is the great ancestor of xenosaga and X is actually the prequel to xenosaga *mind blown*

        • MogCakes

And then Xenogears fanboys will crap all over it for being connected to Xenosaga because Xenosaga is apparently the worst thing ever.

          • JediaKyrol

they apparently never made it to Xenogears: disk 2. Ever since then whenever I get too close to a fancy dining chair I go into a fit of rage and smash it.

          • MogCakes

Yeah, disc 2 of Gears was terrible. They clearly ran out of budget by that time, haha.

          • JediaKyrol

apparently one story goes Square wanted a christmas release no matter what…so told the team that they were shipping what they had and that it better run. So the team slapped together the montage scenes a few fights and a completely locked down worldmap for disk 2, handed it over for release, then quit Square and set up to found Monolith.

          • MogCakes

That actually makes a whole lot of sense.

          • Kaihaku

            That’s what I’ve always heard.

          • Kaihaku

            Blame Squaresoft. :(

          • Xenosaga is pretty horrible

          • Seasqwaa

Ah jeez, is it really that bad? Because I JUST started one the first game…. I probably shouldn’t go on…. should I?

          • MogCakes

Xenosaga is a VERY cutscene heavy series, and as such if you don’t get into the narrative it can drag. The story itself is good, but beware the 2nd game in the trilogy. I recommend completing it.

          • Seasqwaa

I… I like sci-fi. And I like cutscenes. But I know what you’re saying; I hated the direction of pretty much every tales of game, but I think Xenosaga, from it’s setting alone, will grip me a tad more easily. Thanks for the response!

          • MogCakes

No probs. I’m a huge fan of Saga and Gears myself.

          • JediaKyrol

yeah, saga 2 seemed to drag on forever…but 3 made up for it…still followed the Xeno-tradition of rushed ending though…but it least it wasn’t a friggin polaroid montage in front of a fancy dinner chair! *rage! *smash!

          • I don’t really get why people treat Episode II like it was some kind of radical anomaly for the series. It basically just took a lot of things that were already bad about Episode I, and made them worse – although in some ways it actually improved on the story and battle system (even if for every step forward it took about five back).

          • MogCakes

Well that’s really just it. Ep 1 had its flaws already, Ep II took those and exacerbated them.

          • It depends. If you like it so far, you might as well keep playing for a while and see what you think. However, if you’re already bored out of your skull, you deserve to know that it doesn’t really get any better.

Either way, though, I can safely say that if you want a sci-fi JRPG, playing Xenogears would almost certainly be a worthier investment of your time and money (and even that’s not without some considerable flaws).

          • Kaihaku

Personally, I enjoyed the Xenosaga Episode 1 but thought that it went downhill from there.

          • MogCakes

No more horrible than Chrono Cross is to Chrono Trigger – which is to say, not horrible at all, but Trigger fanboys and Gears fanboys will think Cross/Saga are abominations.

          • No, the Xenosaga games are pretty bad by any reasonable standard of quality game design/storytelling – not just compared to Xenogears. And I’ve spent the last year and a half slogging through them all, so I should know.

          • MogCakes

Nice opinion mate, about as good as mine.

          • I mean, if you want to have a serious debate about what constitutes good game design and storytelling and why Xenosaga fails to meet those criteria, we can do that

          • MogCakes

I’d rather not. I’ve had that debate many times over with both wRPG and jRPG fans and my conclusion to it all is that there’s an unwritten code for RPGs but everyone interprets it differently and adds their own rules to the mix. The fact is we have different opinions on Xenosaga and I’m willing to respect yours if you respect mine.

    • Kaihaku

It’s a red Xenoblade X which is more of a paint stroke, the Xenogears X is more spray-painted. Plus, the first trailer had a close up of Shulk from Xenoblade and Square Enix is still sitting on the rights to Xenogears.

I’ve been through Xenogears, Xenosaga, and Xenoblade. There is a lot of carry over in the plots and themes but the real connection is that they all share core members of their development team.

  • Go2hell66

That soundtrack sounds like it was ripped straight out of the guilty crown anime

    • MogCakes

You mean ‘ripped right out of Xenosaga’. It shares a lot of similarities to the 2nd and 3rd games in that trilogy.

    • Ferrick

      same composer

      • DyLaN

Nice. I like the main theme of GC (I kinda forgot the rest of the OST :X) so now I’m even more excited for X.

Say, is it OK to just start at Xenoblade?

        • XypherCode

It’s fine. It’s not even confirmed if the game is really a sequel to Xenoblade. Iwata said Monolith just used their experience with Xenoblade in making ‘X’.

    • 猫 黒

I love Chelly’s voice. And after playing Zenoblade, I feel I can’t really pass up on this. But god, that WiiU exlcusive… I really really don’t like the console industry right now… When will all game devs move to computers?

  • Ferrick

o.o so it is really xenoblade’s sequel, HYPE!

  • kool_cid414

I WANT!!!!!!!!!!!! This and next year are the epitome of rpgs for me. Kh3 FFXV and this all my happiness is hard to contain.

  • So awesome, wish we had a name.

  • Houten Lee

Monolith had me at Giant Robot JRPG

    • JustThisOne

This is turning out to be that crazy dream I had as kid when I smashed action figures and plastic dinosaurs together.

      • Houten Lee

        Order of event:
        JRPG – Semi sold!
        Giant Mecha – SOLD!
Transformable Giant Mecha – SOLD SOLD SOLD!
Open World with large enemy including dinosaurs

        • Kai2591

Couldn’t have said it any better.

        • If you’re interested. There’s another game full of giant robots and transformable giant robots whose attacks would put Cloud and Sephiroth to shame. That game is 2nd Super Robot Wars OG for the PS3. A mech-tastic RPG filled with various interesting yet colourful characters. Operation Hotblood fights for its localization, so they would like all the support they can get.

  • Asura

This game looks like what Final Fantasy has been failing to pull off for years!
    And those dinosaur-ish things! Wooo!

  • puchinri

I kind of wonder, does Monolith (strongly) prefer to be making these mecha games of this kind of style? Or are they like, “hey, yeah, that’d be fun, we’ll make one~.”

Just curious if they have ideas for something completely different (like Baten Kaitos and Soma Bringer), or if this is where their creative drive is taking them. Either way, I hope we get to see more titles from this gen for Wii U and 3DS (and that the titles will hit all regions).

    • They still have that mysterious 3DS game in development from their Kyoto studio. Yasuyuki Honne (director of the Baten Kaitos series) is playing some part in its development, and judging by the concept art he’s released so far it definitely looks like a fantasy game.

Other than that… Tetsuya Takahashi just really, really, really likes mechs. A playthrough of Xenogears ought to drive this point home pretty effectively.

      • puchinri

Ohh~. I forgot about that. Thanks!

That’s true. And that’s why I feel it probably is a direction he enjoys and the team in general is glad to keep going with. I don’t feel like it’s a loss or anything, since I also love mechs and am glad we have devs like him and the MS team, but I just wonder if they have other ideas/plans?

        • Tetsuya Takahashi has said in some interviews that he was a huge mecha otaku in his days, and still is IIRC. IIRC as well, he also collects giant robot figures.
Also, if you like mechs then I genuinely recommend you to play the Super Robot Wars OG games. Operation Hotblood fights for the localization of the current, awesome SRW OG game for the PS3. Please support them.

    • I think Takahashi does genuinely love mechs. I mean, even in Xenoblade, that’s what the bad guys from Mechonis are. They’re effectively really evil-looking mechs.

In this trailer, though, how you can really tell that they like their mechs is the way they almost fetishize them. Like, the slow walk through the mech-filled corridor. The close up shot of the pilot’s fingers wrapping around the joystick. The “coming to life” scene when it powers up after that.

I think they didn’t want to overdo it too much, though. Like, I think they wanted people to know that mechs are a big focus, but that they aren’t the only thing. That’s why you don’t see the mech take off after the pilot gets in. That would have made too much of an impact.

Instead, they cut to on-foot scenes, showing people running around and exploring on foot, just to get it across that that’s a thing, and then switch back to mechs later so people get that there’s both.

It was a really well-made trailer, IMO.

      • puchinri

I feel like this is his chance to really get back into his mech love too after a while (and as a mecha fan as well, I’m both ecstatic for him and envious of him for being able to indulge his mecha love on such a level).

It definitely is! I mean, it gets me pumped in general, but at the same time, it kind of has everything I like in mecha (because it has a Kawamori and classic vibe more than a Gundam vibe) while still managing to be about something outside of mecha.

      • I think we knew Takahashi had a mech boner ever since Xenogears managed to shoehorn the freaking robots into literally every other plot point, no matter how nonsensical or out of keeping with the rest of the game’s tone it was.

  • KingGunblader

TBH, I’m not really interested in the mech stuff. I want a better understanding of how combat works in the game. Also the story. Monolith always have my attention.

  • Chris Wincott

    @ 1:21 mark.. 3 players can join you? :o

  • Mmmmmmm, oh yes, I want to rub this trailer all over my body

  • Sentsuizan_93

That soundtrack. I must know it!!!!
On another note, I feel like an excited little kid again!! ^_^

    • XypherCode

Maybe at launch Nintendo will release a bonus soundtrack for it or a Hiroyuki Sawano album for this game.

  • Junko Enoshima

    I need a Wii U AND a ps4.

  • Take my money Nintendo !

  • $24431191

“X” is going to be fucking amazing. I’m buying a Wii U specifically for this game.

  • psycho_bandaid

Sweet. I’ll be getting a Wii U next year when this game comes out then.

  • XenonVincentPlus

Monolithsoft’s new game looks incredible so far. This and FFXV have certainly grabbed my attention =)

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Daaaaaaaamn… this looks awesome, like Xenoblade on crack awesome!

  • SerendipityX

Looks great but I’m not feeling it. Not a fan of mecha/robots and I’m not feeling the character designs. Then again I didn’t have that much interest in Xenoblade.

  • Guest

At this point in the trailer, we see that the character names include Player 2, Player 3, and Player 4. Do you think that this game could be multiplayer?

  • modsme

At this point in the video, the character names show Player 2, Player 3, and Player 4. Do you think this game could be multiplayer?

  • Uso Ewin

So the mechs are called DOLLS…

  • Spirit Macardi

I just realized that the mechs in here remind me a lot of the Nightmare Frames from Code Geass. They have that similar look where they’re clearly designed to be military vehicles as opposed to super robots, plus the single orb eye on the head.

    • MogCakes

Monolith Soft’s mech designs date back to Xenogears in the late 90’s, they’re pretty iconic as far as jRPG mecha goes.

      • Spirit Macardi

I was just going based on my own personal knowledge. I’ve honestly never played any of their work before Xenoblade, probably because I never owned a PS1 and I didn’t get a PS2 until late into that console’s lifecycle. Hence I missed out on their prior titles.

        • MogCakes

Aah. I totally recommend Xenogears/Saga if you can find them, they’re great RPGs.

    • I was only a fan of the Lancelot and Guren, I’m afraid. If this giant robot is going to kick ass as much as the Lancelot, then I’m all set and game for it (super robots are my favourites, but as long as it’s badass and can use blades, then I’m pleased).

  • Aristides

I will buy a WIIU when this game launches :P of course I will have a PS4 by then. I just love mechs!

    • Same here, man. If this game comes to Europe, then I have genuinely a freakin’ big reason to buy the Wii U. If you love mechs, you may be interested in Super Robot Wars Original Generation games. Some of them have been localized on Nintendo handhelds, but Operation Hotblood is fighting for the localization of current Super Robot Wars OG games that are full of awesome giant robots and interesting heroes and heroines. Please support Operation Hotblood.

      • Aristides

SRW is awesome, I have the DS one that Atlus brought over and I had played an import version of one of the original PS2 ones. I’ll check out operation Hotblood, didn’t know there was a localization movement on the games :P

        • That’s cool, man! Glad to hear we may count on your support. You can find us on Facebook. We’re also part of Operation Rainfall’s campaign hub and such.

  • kaizin

this trailer was so epic i cant wait for this to come out.

  • Covnam

Looks awesome, hopefully it ends up being a reason to pick up a WiiU. Now if they could just do a reprint of Xenoblade…

  • Forbsz

This looks so epic I just don’t even know wish it was out this year!!!

  • artemisthemp

I am pretty sure, I have seen that Mech somewhere before.
    Oh ya HDN Victory

  • Kaihaku

I bought a Wii U after the first “X” trailer and the second trailer does not disappoint.

  • Guilherme Matheus Silva

Hum… There’s a structure in there that reminds me of Bionis’ Shoulder…
