X, Monolith Soft’s Wii U Game, To Feature Large Open World With Seamless Exploration

By Ishaan . June 11, 2013 . 7:44am

X, the Wii U game from Xenoblade developer Monolith Soft, will be an open-world game, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced this morning.

X (a tentative title) is being developed with the goal of creating a large-scale open world with “seamless exploration,” Iwata said, and that Monolith are utilizing experience gleaned while developing Xenoblade as they work on the game.

X will allow you to explore on foot on land, but will also allow you to ride special mechs in the game, that will be capable of traversing both on the ground as well as through the sky.

The game is slated for release in 2014.

    My (mech) body is ready.

    • Kai2591

      you’re cybernetic? awesome~

      • Ereek

If you ask Tolone, it’s not as fun as you’d expect. There’s a stigma against their kind.

  • Brandon001

Watched the direct JUST for this, everything looks gorgeous, can’t wait to pilot MC’s mech. Hope the story, characters, and world are EVEN better than Xenoblade.

    • StarWarudo

      Don’t forget the music.

      • Brandon001

Gods, how could i forget that.

  • Ereek

I refuse to let myself hope that this is like Xenogears. I refuse. I can’t let myself be hurt again.

But the hope keeps blooming. I’m sure it will be great either way, but I still hope.

    • MogCakes

I wouldn’t get my hopes up if I were you. This looks to be more along the lines of Xenoblade with the open world exploration and lots of undeveloped landscapes. The city parts look a LOT like Xenogears/saga though.

  • FX102A

This was literally the only game I took real notice of in the entire Nintendo Direct as it seems the developer is actually trying to make something unique.

I do worry a little that it may be either a MMORPG or a Monster Hunter like game but based on Monolithsoft’s experience, I hope it’ll be like Xenoblade, that found that sweet spot of an open world pushing exploration and side quests yet a dedicated goal and main story to follow.

  • Go2hell66

Wow this is what i call a next gen rpg.

could have sworn i heard the guilty crown soundtrack in that trailer

    • Nyandroid

I knew it sounded familiar for some reason!

    • Dave_O_Segundo

      Same composer.

      • neocatzon

Thank you. Once again, thank you. I’m sold.

  • Brimfyre

Maybe it’s because I’m currently playing Xenosaga III for the first time, but X has been the only game at this con that got me excited.

Luckily I already own a Wii U, so no PS4 or X1 purchases for me any time soon.

  • Lemon

While the Smash trailer was good, this was AWESOME. As someone mentioned, Action RPG + Open World + Mechas + Transformers + Multiplayer + Monster Hunter = X, apparently. I’ll get my Wii U once this is out.

  • Skyer Ist

This is EPIC. I’m dyiiiiiing!!!! OMG OMG OMG!!

  • Gotta buy this DAY 1!

  • Anime10121

How the hell does this STILL not have a full title yet?

Oh well, easily one of my most hyped titles for next year, and cant wait for the full product.

One thing I’m hoping is that they confirmed a WW release Next year, and not just one for Japan, because it looked like they still have a Lot of work to do, with untranslated text and such.

    • PreyMantis

I’m pretty sure it’s going to be released outside of Japan. Why the heck would they even show it worldwide with Iwata speaking English and not Japanese? It will release outside of Japan.

      • Anime10121

I know its releasing outside Japan, what I’m hoping for, is for it to LAUNCH worldwide next year, as in, release 2014 in all regions instead of 2014 in Japan, and 2016 in other regions (like Xenoblade did).

  • Nyandroid

It’ll be neat if the mechs are costumizable. Kinda like the armour in Xenoblade.

  • Yamaneko22

The only thing that saves WiiU in my eyes :)

    • Kai2591

yeah i might just get a Wii U just for this.
      IF it proves excellent.

  • James Enk

AWESOME game can’t wait to play it and all that but what is wrong with Nintendo and the world why isn’t this gem getting the press it deserves?

    • PreyMantis

They had no conference to generate the buzz.

      • James Enk

it’s not just that other game from the direct get there moments
this one was like “we have an awesome rpg… moving on”

  • Lukas Meza

best game of the show, i wonder why nobody is talking about this on the internet

    • PreyMantis

Just my two cents, but maybe it’s cuz Big-N had no conference to show it which would have generated more buzz.

      • Lukas Meza

but everyone that saw mario kart, smash and zelda also saw this, so why no coverage, i bet that this is the most anticipated game for the hardcore nintendo fan, besides smash of course

  • HerosLight

This game will surely be one of those “Gem” games for the Wii U.

So far, this game would look like it would be a huge hit. Just like Xenoblade was.

  • Linhua

… please be what I think it is… please be what I think it is…

  • Guest

    Nice, but…

1: Bland main character due of Character Creator.

2: Same combat; not blood-pumping at all. Seamless exploration would benefit the players more if they kind of take notes from YS’s combat. Of course that’s just me.
    Moving on–
