Nintendo To Release First Free-to-Play Software This Fiscal Year

By Ishaan . June 12, 2013 . 3:30pm

Nintendo plan to release their first free-to-play game this fiscal year, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said at a meeting with analysts this morning.

“For this fiscal year, in order to expand our digital business, we are planning to offer new types of content, Iwata shared. “We will release titles such as ‘New Super Luigi U,’ which is brand-new add-on content updating more than 80 courses from ‘New Super Mario Bros. U,’ and the first free-to-play software from Nintendo.”

Nintendo’s current fiscal year ends in March 2014. Iwata did not specify just what kind of free-to-play software Nintendo are looking into. The company does offer a number of free services already, such as its SwapNote and upcoming FlipNote Studio 3D apps on Nintendo 3DS, but one would imagine that Iwata is referring specifically to a game in this context.

Iwata went on to reiterate that Nintendo also plan to push web-based technologies like HTML5 and JavaScript on their Wii U platform, and do more business with small, independent developers.

Nintendo has no problem with flash games on their platform while companies like Apple condemn it because they think it’s a threat to their own money-making ecosystem. GG Nintendo.

  • JMaster3000

U should mention that ”Fiscal year” is till March 2014 which means the game could come in 2014.

My opinion of F2P has softened a bit in recent months after seeing some genuinely interesting experiments with the format like with DoA5 and Tekken Revolution. Of course, Nintendo always has their own idiosyncratic approach to things, so I’m curious to see how they plan to handle a F2P game – I trust it won’t be too obnoxious, and it may even be pretty neat.

I kind of want to see Shigeru being shot between a bunch of barrels now, because it would amuse me. Amuse me greatly.

Why do they call it digital business? Their games have all been digital for the past 3-4 decades. Sorry, but as an electrical engineer that misuse of terminology just bugs me.
