Capcom recently conducted a video Q&A for Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies. You can watch the recorded version of the video above. Below are some of the more interesting tidbits we picked up:

  • The basic concept for Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies is “the dark age of the law”. It starts out with a bombing incident that takes place during a courtroom battle.

  • The game itself won’t take on a darker tone. It will start out with more impact. It still has a lot of the flavour of the Ace Attorney games.

  • In terms of volume of content, the game is close to Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations.

  • Should take the average player 25-30 hours.

  • Both Phoenix and Apollo will have their own court battles.

  • Phoenix has a new suit because, while it’s only been a year since Apollo Justice, it’s been eight years since Phoenix battled in court, and they wanted him to appear more mature.

  • Edgeworth is a chief prosecutor now, not just a regular prosecutor.

  • The new prosecutor, Simon Blackquill, uses psychological manipulation in court, including on the judge. He’s paired up with a detective of his own, but you’ll have to find out why in the game.

  • Simon’s psychological manipulation doesn’t work on the detective, since he’s a little clueless.

  • Simon is a “very intimidating” adversary.

  • The Jury System from Apollo Justice isn’t in Ace Attorney 5.

  • Athena Cykes studied analytical psychology.

  • “Lips are sealed” about Maya Fey.

  • Fully animated cutscenes like in Layton vs. Ace Attorney.

  • Will have full English voiceovers in the anime cutscenes.

  • If you’re fans of the stepladder, it’s in there. “You have to find it.”

Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies is slated for release this Fall in the West.

“Lips are sealed” about Maya Fey.
Is it just me, or is this line a clear indication that she’s going to be involved in one of the cases (possibly the final case) and play a key role of some sort? I can’t wait for this game’s release, but I also know it’s gonna be pretty difficult to avoid spoilers…

    • Rytan

I just hope she doesn’t end up being //part// of the case…

      • komiko12

Yeah hopefully that “part” won’t be being the dead body.

        • linkenski

Yeah, i’m starting to fear they will have her die and make her the new “Mia Fey” where Pearl channels her. It would be both disrespectful and lazy to the franchise.

          • SuperSailorV

“Disrespectful” is the perfect word for it.

          • “Disrestrollful”

  • And the eternal “Ladder vs Stepladder” question continues!

  • Minos

I care more about Iris than for Maya to be frank….

    • What, you want to create a Love Triangle, just like that?

      • Minos

Meh, I actually don’t think there was anything between Maya and Phoenix. Dunno what happened on those 8 years, but I simply can’t imaginate May and Phoenix together.

        • Dynami

          Nooo kidding.

People crying “Homewrecker” over Iris need to stahp. There was no home to wreck.

          • Risa

I completely agree with you. I saw her more as Pheenie’s little sister than real gf material. o.O; He was protective of her but in a brotherly kind of way not a you’re-the-love-of-my-life-have-my-babies way.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

News about Iris pliz.T_T I reallllllly wanted to know what happened to her after the Godot case there.^_^

  • Lisa Fraulein

Now I’m curious about Maya’s case. Seems like there’s a big reason why Maya didn’t show up when Phoenix took the fall in Apollo Justice’s game. And now, anything about Maya will not be mentioned.

Things are getting more mysterious now. I don’t think I care if this game is downloadable only. I’m gonna get it.

    • Well, Maya returning to Phoenix’s side, after she was absent in any number of previous cases, is also kind of a running gag, as well. And the method of her return? Being the main suspect in a Trial.

      • Furet de Morgenster

  • Simon

LOL. I am a fan of the Step-Ladder. I will have to look for it then!

    • AuraGuyChris

You mean the ladder. You need to stop being so closed-minded!

  • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

Also, Nuuuuuuu~ I need to know about Mystic Maya~!D:

  • $29082171

Thank god they removed the jury system.

  • scratchbach

I hope the Jurist system is just somewhere in the background, not completely gone. Otherwise Apollo Justice loses even more importance, which would be kind of sad.

  • new_tradition

I actually miss Mia more than Maya, but I get her story is done. And lol about the lips being sealed about Maya. Okay, Capcom. I gotcha ;D

  • Guilherme Matheus Silva

    Chief prosecutor? Not bad Edgey!

  • FivePointedTheStar

“The dark age of the law” is probably alluding to the all important “the only proof in court is evidence” clause that keeps being echoed in every game. Phoenix is trying to change it, thus why the Jurist System was put to test in AA4.

However, the Jurist System might be a likely and very real thing that will happen in the AA universe… but there are’s a group of people in the AA universe who are secretly benefiting from the current system. And are now having to make sure that it doesn’t change.

Changing an entire judicial system doesn’t happen overnight. It might be years… decades even, before the Jurist System is actually used regularly and the old system is finally phased out.

  • yellowmage

    Forget Maya, what about Gumshoe!?

    • Gumshoe isn’t in the game.

      • benhanks040888

That may be the saddest news about AA5

        • Kamakuma

Seriously.. t—t People want to know how Gummy is doing! Is he finally eating more than just cup ramen, Promotion… Dare I say Girlfriend with meggey?! t–t

        • Shizumasa

Gumshoe indeed! Like gum on your shoe, he is impossible to get rid of! – Miles Edgeworth

  • British_Otaku

“If you’re fans of the stepladder, it’s in there. “You have to find it.” – First day on English version sealed. >_>

Sure, I’m a little concerned about Maya, Gumshoe and how the Jurist System’s disappearance will make AA4 stick out even more than it already has for the last few years. I’ll try to bare with it to find the stepladder.

Would be really cool if the game was getting a Multi-5 Localisation like some of the prior AA games.

    • They pretty much outright said no to Gumshoe, but Maya was the “hmmm” and “lips are sealed” type stuff.

      • British_Otaku

They said that in regards to Gumshoe? That’s a shame, I guess it’s easier to accept leaving one character from the main recurring cast than everyone but Gumshoe (see AA4/Apollo Justice). I would like a justification for why, but I assume the game will provide me that or perhaps the titles I haven’t played like Ace Attorney Investigations (and the never localised sequel).

Thanks for the heads up, hoping they find a great way to reintroduce Maya now that everyone who heard of this news will be expecting her.

  • Take my money! Please make dual audio. I want ti be able to choose japanese dub.

  • Göran Isacson

And just like that, I’m already looking forward to seeing the interactions between Simon and Detective Fulbright. Seeing the big bad prosecutor that has all the people shaking in their shoes be utterly befuddled towards his simpleminded “assistant” will probably provide me with many a laugh. And regarding Maya… I’m holding out hope that the final case may have her, Gumshoe, Lotta Hart, Larry and AAAALLLL the classic characters just show up and be the cavalry and provide some important information that breaks the case… every single one of them. One by one. To the point of ridiculousness.

  • you know, I love the they’re having all these recurring characters, but will they ever bring the Investigations characters to the main series? I want to see Kay! Well anyway, really looking forward to this game.

  • Aoshi00

It’s great that the game has some voice-overs for the first time, usually it’s only limited to the trailers and special videos (or drama CDs). I know I’ve said it many times, thank god Takumi Shu is back as Phoenix, I did not like the live action actor’s voice in Gyakuten x Layton or Ultimate MvC3, very amateurish and distracting..

I know a lot of people miss Maya, but I miss Gumshoe too. At least he was in Investigations, Maya’s been gone for a lone time..

I’m not getting the Limited Edition, but very curious what the secret covers are, show us alrdy :(… hope I would get my copy in time to d/l the free costumes.. still think it’s a pity no Eng retail release..

  • SilentChaos

IS AA5 gonna have japanese dub for the anime cutscenes? would love to have that

    • Brandonmkii

      Did you read the article?

      • SilentChaos

Yup, it says full english voiceovers. It still doesn’t rule out the possibility of a japanese dub(dual audio) for the anime cutscenes.

  • Zoozbuh

Guys, pretty sure it’s not going to be dual audio- and personally, I wouldn’t want it to be. One of the things I *love* about this franchise is how much effort they put into the localisation. It really gives a FULL experience in English/all other languages, and hearing Japanese voices (with different names) would ruin the immersion. Just my opinion.

    • Zoozbuh

And day-one purchase/download? HELL YES, NO DOUBT.

    • David García Abril

Well, not “all other languages” this time.

Capcom confirmed the game is only localized to English. That means no Spanish, French, German nor Italian localizations this time (something that already happened with “Investigations”. Too bad, since the other European localizations were as high-quality as the English version, something that is EXTREMELY RARE in Capcom games)

And I’m afraid that, because of that, AA5 will be the last game of the franchise that will appear in Europe.
