Nintendo 3DS Firmware Update Allows You To Back Up Save Data

By Ishaan . June 17, 2013 . 10:35pm

Nintendo have released a new system update for the Nintendo 3DS in North America that allows you to back up your save data for download versions of your 3DS games. Here’s what Nintendo’s patch notes say:

Save Data Backup Feature:

  • Users can now back up save data for downloadable versions of Nintendo 3DS software and most Virtual Console games

Improved system stability and usability:

  • Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience

Note that the update doesn’t include features that were made available in past system updates, so if you missed out on any, you’ll have to grab the appropriate update. Here are the specifics:

The following, which were included within previous system updates, are not included with system menu versions 6.0.0-0U through 6.0.0-4U:

  • New features for the Nintendo 3DS Camera
  • Content for StreetPass Mii Plaza
  • System Transfer between two Nintendo 3DS systems

The following, which were included within previous system updates, are not included with system menu versions 6.0.0-0U through 6.0.0-1U:

  • Addition of Internet Browser
  • Addition of Nintendo eShop
  • System Transfer from a Nintendo DSi or Nintendo DSi XL system

T_T The Asia and U.S 3DS haven’t received any upgrade on StreetPass Mii Plaza and Nintendo Eshop here.T_T It is currently only exist on Australia and Europe one 3DS’es.

Hope that the content will come here sooner. I want that Xenoblade puzzle piece.T_T

    • Haseyo

My J-3DS has the update now. I got all the new games, and no idea how to play them. Yay!

  • Aaron Brown

Shockingly, this does not support Animal Crossing.

    • Ferofax

Because Save Scumming is frowned upon.

Exactly, and Resetti would take the faces off from those who break the law!

        • Ferofax

After the Villager is done with them.

  • Marcus J. Hopkins

This update renders the Action Replay Update inoperable.

    • Ferofax

Bummer if you’re using it offline. Yay if online.

  • LanceHeart

I really wish they would just plain allow save backups for cartridge games as well. Sony does it by allowing PlayStation Plus uploads to their save backup system (which in turn can be redownloaded to your memory card and backed up on a PC), so why not allow us to back up our save files?

    • XiaomuArisu

Or using SDcards for extra saveslots.
Would be great for games like Fire Emblem

      • DarthSithZero

        Or Pokemon

  • shuyai

There are two major thing people want

    1. allow hardcopy game save onto SD card and allow multiple save
2.Accurate battery level as percentage not 4 ficking barbar

    • xzeldax3

They should at least let us transfer physical games saves with the transfer tool without the digital copy!!! I want to trade in games but don’t want to lose saves >_<

      • ShindoW

        Couldn’t agree more.

    • Shane Guidaboni

Wait, people have been complaining about a lack of a battery percentage bar? Never thought it was that important. I charge my 3DS regularly, and pretty much play it until it’s in the red.

      • shuyai

dude 76% and 100% is still four bar but it is a huge different, it can mean life or death if you take it with you in the morning and cant charge during the day.

also if you can see the percentage you can plan out the usage like you use 20% for this amount of time so i only have this amount of time left.

        • Shane Guidaboni

If that’s the case, why wouldn’t you bring your charger with you? Adding a percentage bar isn’t going to change your charging habits. It’s purely a mental thing, IMO. Personally, when I see my 3DS with 2 bars left I’ll stick it in the charger, or I’ll charge it before hand if I know I’m going to take it for a day of walking around to get street passes.

I like options, so Nintendo should at least add it, I suppose.

    • DenjinJ

Yeah… It’s better now that they left the old Gameboy system of “ok… ok… ok… and now it dies! *click*” but it’s sad that instead of catching up to the PSP’s percent and time display, the Vita went to a crappy mini battery bar graph!

…though the display doesn’t matter that much on 3DS. Do you wonder what the charge level is? That means it’s about to run out! From what? Sitting in sleep mode for a few hours, of course!

Talking of a new update is anyone else having trouble purchasing new streetpass games? when I ask the NPC for the price of the game, mii plaza just hangs then reset the system due to unexpected error or something.

    • Detrimont

i am too, hopefully it will be fixed by the end of the week(probably when the estore updates)

      • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

I do hope so too. I do know it cost £4.19 each which is a tad expensive for a game that requires gathering via streetpass.

    • Haseyo

It worked perfectly fine on my J-3DS, but I have heard the EU update was a tad buggy. I hope it gets fixed soon. I need to look at EU play it so I know what the hell I’m doing. I would’ve passed on it but I surprisingly get a nice amount of Streetpasses at work.

    • Kristoffer Brandberg

I have the same problem! At first I feared it had something to do with the SD-card but maybe it’s what Haseyo said, that it is buggy.

  • Detrimont

too bad the update is slightly broken, at least on my 3ds, the app crashes when i try to buy any of the new games

FYI, the part about features not being included is referring to versions of the update that come pre-installed on Game Cards (which only add certain features). The regular System Update download will include every feature to date.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I hope one day we will be able to back up save data on hard copy games other then buying an 3rd party device

So, I’m confused. I bought a bigger SD card, and when I tried to use it, I can understand my digital game/saves not being there, but my physical game saves were gone, too. They’re not on the game card? Where are they? How does I transfer to new SD card? Do I have to get my computer involved!?

    • pressstart

What you want to do is to copy all the files from the old sd card and put it in the new sd card. That way, everything transfers over. This works if it’s the same 3DS. So yes, computer required.

      • http://www.mrtiredmedia.com/ NickyD

Excellent! Thank you for the confirmation.

  • http://takopako.tumblr.com takopako

when is miiverse coming to 3ds? i know they said it would at some point.

  • http://www.angelmassb.co.nr/ Angel Mass

Lol, it doesnt let me backup the only game I really want to have a backup of. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

  • DarthSithZero

Backup saves is always important for the gamers.
But this could be a great feature is Pokemon X/Y can read your backup saves from Plantinum/HG/SS/B/W1-2 so you can have all your pokemons together

  • Kristoffer Brandberg

What’s up with Mii Plaza Shop crashes every time I tried to buy one of the new games? Cause it’s totally happening to me. Something about bugs in the EU-update?
