By Ishaan . June 19, 2013 . 8:00am

J-Stars Victory Vs isn’t the only Namco fighting game that Goku is going to be starring in. He’s also going to be in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z, announced in Japan’s Weekly Shounen Jump magazine.

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z is team fighting action title that lets up to eight players battle it out against one another. Alternatively, you can have up to four players in cooperative play. The game lets players perform attacks together and heal one another, and will allow for online multiplayer battles.

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z is in development for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Vita. Jump shows Super Saiyan God from the Battle of the Gods movie as a playable fighter.

  • Whatever happened to Budokai Tenkaichi 4? Is it still coming?

    • Sardorim

They’re such sadist… Everyone I know that plays or has played DBZ fighting games wants a BT4….

    • British_Otaku

      Ideally, this should be it.

Spike has developed the most DBZ games in the last generation, this looks like their work with some of the newer elements like 4 players at once (seen in the PSP Tenkaichi and Arcade Zenkai Battle Royale)…
Hopefully we will see mechanics and polish from those prior games, but otherwise be free to think of BT4 as RB1. >_>

      • Kaitsu

Battle Royale was the most polished Tenkaichi Budokai style ever that I’ve seen. None of that rock paper scissors crap. And all super moves are all manual. I really hope they bring it to this one to make it more competitive

        • The thing I loved about Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is that it had an amazingly huge story mode. Sure, fighters are not made for story, but the Dragon Ball stories are good for that. Not only that, it had over 100 characets. Sure, there were some ridiculous copy-pastes (like most of the Goku forms), but at least they made enough effort to present different versions of these characters, while providing numerous others. Aside from that, the challenges/missions were fun and the controls worked just right, something that was destroyed in Raging Blast. I still have a hard time controlling both RB games. Not only is Budokai Tenkaichi 3 my favorite Dragon Ball game, but my favorite fighter of all time as well. I would like to see them continue it either with this game, or the BT4 they announced a year or so ago. As long as it has enough content and good controls/gameplay, I’m fine with it.

          • Spider-Man

This is why I want it released on the PSN as a PS2 classic. Or even an HD remaster. I need to play that game again.

          • Kaitsu

I think you should look into Zenkai Battle Royale. It’s Budokai Tenkaichi 3 system, that’s why I said what I said. It’s the same game, but a more polished system. Essentially, I think it looks more fun.

Also the BT4 announced years ago was actually the HD Collection for the regular Budokai series. There was no BT4.

      • Achned Walters

The game has been developed by Artdink.

        • British_Otaku

A response to something I said 7 months ago? Really? You didn’t expect me to figure it out later? >_>

Just avoid necromancy in the future dude, I might had known that already given that I never said “This game is developed by Spike” but that this game has elements from Spike titles and vaguely resembled them based on 7 months ago knowledge.

  • Asclepius

uhh.. sorry but didn’t spence write the same article earlier?

    • Super Saiyan God wasn’t in that post! Plus, I wanted to clarify some of the other stuff as well, since we have access to more info now.

  • Musashi234

I dont know how i feel about this……

  • Ryumoau

i really hope this comes out this year and it has a wealth of playable characters like the previous fighting games.

Though i have to say i was kinda hoping for an HD collection of the Budokai tenkaichi ps2 games, like they did for Budokai.

    • Alestaos

So you would rather have alot of charactees that are clones of each other. Rather than a few that are actually unique

      • Ryumoau

yes since i’m sure there will still be clones even with a limited roster. So might as well give me as much as you can.

        • Alestaos

Fair Play your choice. I like Budokai 3 small group but unqiue fighting style and combos for them.

  • Sergio Briceño

I know who my team of 4 will be. Ginyu tokusentai! (minus cpt. Ginyu…).

  • Minos

I am starting to think this Gen is not the “FPS Gen” but the “Dragon Ball and Naruto Gen”.

  • Crimson_Cloud

Ultimate Tenkaichi, although not that good, actually started something fresh. Custom character creation and it’s hero story mode. No matter how shallow it was, I hope that is carried and expanded in future games.

    • Sephiroth420

yeah i hope so too, and the creation system in dragonball online was pretty good too, i hope they never go back to ultimate tenkaichi, unless they make it budokai tenkaichi style fighting with that story mode instead, couldve been a truly epic game.

      • Crimson_Cloud

Agreed. Don’t know why they wanted to experiment and put a far less interesting gameplay.

  • Solomon_Kano

I wouldn’t be surprised if this and J-Stars ran on the same engine. This sounds like that game on steroids.

  • Sephiroth420

do you reakon they will show it at SDCC?

  • Sardorim

That’s great and all but I want SSJ4 in DBZ games again.

    • L Lawliet

You people are obsessed with SSJ4.

  • Wooow, where is all this Vita news coming from!? I think they honestly had enough announcements for a small Gaming Heaven, now I’m wondering what SCEJA is up to here. Now then, 8 player battles in Dragon Ball? Yes please! Not sure how I feel about the whole Super Saiyan God thing but so long as the roster is good, that’s worth the hype.

    • TheExile285

Makes of up for that ***** E3

      • Oh gosh, let’s not lower our standards yet. E3 (Press conference) was a disaster. But E3 (on the show floor) was amazing. I didn’t even know all those games were a thing. So, that’s positive at least.

  • TheExile285

    *looks up SSG*

    meh. I want SS4 and SS4 Gogeta >_>

    • GokuSSJG

Maybe they will add things like SSJ 3 Gogeta or SSJ 3 Vegito or SSJ4 Gohan like for the what if characters, but SSJG and Bills are also a got addition to the game…

  • Fango

OMG its like a DBZ monster hunter

    • Tre W

…That actually wouldn’t be a bad thing at all, if they actually spent some time with fully fleshing out such a concept. A game focused more on boss battles against some of the more infamous DB baddies like Cell, Buu and various movie villains and the like? *imokaywiththis.gif*

Craft & Meister (aka the Super DBZ devs) just finished making Gundam Breaker, which has a number of MonHun-isms in the mix. Maybe Bamco put them to work on another project almost immediately…?

Since Ultimate Tenkaichi was stated to be the last game developed by Spike under their original contract with Bamco, it may not be them involved this time…

      • Fango

Bout time they did something different with dbz games. Only so many times you can make a fighter… Honestly if this is what I think it is, choosing your fav. Dbz fighter to do team battle againt dbz villains…. I’m throwing my money at them. Next they need to make a good rpg…..

  • Nightwing

Teen Gohan Super Saiyan God, please!

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

At least Goku didn’t shave his eyebrows for this transformation

  • Ni

SSG is like a Kaioken with cheat codes?

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

      Plus limited time

    • They Call Me Senpai

Nah, it’s actually nothing like Kaioken.

  • epy

When will they make a DBZ fighting game that’s at least as good as Budokai Tenkaichi 3? Everything since has been either simplified crap or subpar fighting with prettier graphics.

    • Syn

^^^^^^ This, oh this^^^^^^ You my friend, have my Internet for the day. I agree, the depth of DBZ BT hasnt been seen in a while, the speed, reflex/twitch based dodging, massive roster and all that seem to have been forgotten, I mean its the one of two highest rated DBZ games, you’d think that would tell them something.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

you am no real super sand God. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD00ChESDQw

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

      Shawna Poooooooooooppp!!!

  • Anime10121

Should have known the introduction of Super Saiyan God would lead to more Dragonball Z fighting games. This thing will never die (I am excited to see the movie, but they need to let this thing rest in peace).

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

They need to get the developers from the Budokai, Burst Limit and Ultimate Tenkaichi at least. Those are the 3D game that kicked ass.

  • wow vita

  • Vash bane

    looks like zenkai some

  • ssj3gokou24

disappointed that this ISN’T zenkai battle royale. kinda excited that it kinda resembles “legends” though. time will tell.

  • who are these eight characters.i though you would have way more than that come on bandi namco.

  • GokuSSJG

Cool :D I was hoping for a new DBZ game this year, and also a DBZ game for the ps vita maybe not this year but in the near future, but after all it seems we may get a Ps Vita version and PS3 and Xbox 360 versions this year. :D

  • They Call Me Senpai

If this ends up being better than Tenkaichi 3, then they can have all my money. Everything else sounds fantastic, but I just want them to take everything that made BT3 great and build on it.

I’m really excited for Bills and Super Saiyan God as well. I really like that Toriyama-san kept the design simple and didn’t go overboard with hair and muscles.
