By Ishaan . June 22, 2013 . 12:00pm

Dragon Quest X is coming to PC in Japan, Square Enix announced today during a livestream event. The PC version is slated for release on September 26th.

The download version of the game will cost 3,990 yen on PC, and will come with a free trial for 20 days. Meanwhile, a Special Pack that will include a Dragon Quest-themed security token, a controller an illustration book, a world map and an item code, will cost 9,800 yen.

A beta for the PC version is also currently in progress. You can access this by downloading the benchmark for the game here. Should your system pass, you’ll be able to download the game client and apply for the beta.

  • Crimson_Cloud

Cool. If it ever gets localized, I would get it for PC.

  • Ryudo9

This means it’s not doing so hot on Wii and Wii U

    • ronin4life

But most likely this means it was a game made by Square Enix.

      • Ryudo9

When was the last time a DQ game was not selling well and ported to PC?

        • DesmaX

What was the last time Dragon Quest was a MMO?

        • kanjitech88

Final Fantasy XI retail sales were/are lower than many other main Final Fantasy titles, and even some spin offs. Despite this, it has brought in the most money for Square-Enix. It’s the monthly subscription that brings in more CONTINUED sales, not units sold. Last checked, Dragon Quest X has had a higher subscription count in Japan then FFXI ever did.

        • KiTA

Er, since when has DQX not been selling well?

The WiiU version isn’t selling so hot, but that’s because the Wii version is half price and works just fine on the WiiU.

And DQX is doing better in Japan than FFXI did. Now we just got to see it in the US sometime…

    • kanjitech88

Not really. In fact, that’s not the case at all. It’s an MMO. Why wouldn’t they eventually release it on PC?

      • Farid Belkacemi

        Exactly ! :)

    • Not really. It’s doing better on Wii/Wii U than FFIX did at launch. It’s just that keeping an MMO on consoles only makes no sense whatsoever.

      • Anime10121

Think you mean XI (MMORPG) right? Unless IX really did do that bad in Japan in which case I am very sad as IX is my fave FF.

        • Er, sorry, yes. I meant XI.

      • Corey Owens

To be fair, XI was absolute garbage at release. Also, it was one of the first big MMOs to ever come out of Japan, a country where PC gaming is already a niche market (not to mention 10 years ago).

        • Sure, but to say DQX isn’t doing so hot is kind of a weird thing to say in the presence of FFXIV. Outside of FFXI, DQX is their only other consistent moneymaker.

          • Corey Owens

Oh I don’t agree with the original poster. I believe DQX is doing amazing for what it is. Also, I wouldn’t count FFXIV out with ARR releasing soon and having a huge emphasis on reaching a broader audience.

          • Yeah, agreed. I think ARR looks fantastic and it has potential. :)

  • CirnoTheStrongest

Hooray! Another reason to not own a WiiU!

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      you about to get modded

      • CirnoTheStrongest

I can’t be happy that one of the few Wii/U games I wanted is being ported to a gaming medium I actually own?

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

DID YOU have to be so assholey about it?

          • CirnoTheStrongest

I probably should have used an “xD” instead of the “!”

I think that would have gotten my message across better.

It was a statement of both rejoicing that I had one less reason to have to buy a console I don’t own and laced with a bit of…I don’t know how to word it, related to the WiiU game that I saw advertised the absolute most on Dengeki (until E3 possibly) not being a Wii/U exclusive anymore.

    • ragingmerifes

      I love you.

    • Seems a little mean doesn’t it?

  • ragingmerifes

I’m glad PCs are not region-locked.

    • GH56734

      Servers are :(
Some French site reviewed the Wii version and it seems even with a Japanese Wii you won’t be able to play this game from a non-Japanese IP.
But at least on PC you can still use VPNs.

      • WizardoftheBlueOrder

You can VPN on the Wii as well. Several of the more diehard fans have been doing that in order to play.

    • Corey Owens

I was able to play it on Offline Mode without using a VPN. I tried using a VPN for the online mode and now I can’t start the launcher…

Edit: It had nothing to do with the VPN, the servers are down right now. I believe they come back up at 1AM EST this Monday.

  • I guess they are trying to find an audience. Dragon Quest is still big in Japan but a MMO? On consoles?

PC is full of those so probably grab those people.

  • Hollowkoopa

I have been spending most of time lately playing PC games like League of Legends and haven’t touch my console in a while so this is some nice news.

  • ShadowDivz

Will we ever see some on PSN?

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

    • Kari

Actually Square enix own DQ. DW was on PS2 and PS3. there’s a possibility that it can be on Ps3 or Ps4 in the future.

  • Pockystix

it’s definitely disheartening to still have no news on a western release window for this and the 3DS remake of DQVII

    • Shane Guidaboni

It took SE well over a year to announce that we were getting Bravely Default. I guess they’re a little slow these days.

      • GH56734

I thought Dragon Quest Monsters Jocker 2 wouldn’t have been localized without Nintendo because “The DQ brand is unprofitable in the West” according to SE. Some interview mentioned that…

Well, it’s clear what this entails to the recent DQ games :(

Even Braverly Default (a high profile spiritual successor of FF:4HoL) and FF Agito Type-0 weren’t deemed to deserve a localisation by SE themselves…

        • The Monster Hunter series “is unprofitable in the West” as well, but that doesn’t stop the fan base and Nintendo from localising it. Yes, this is Square Enix we’re talking about, not Capcom, but that just might mean it’ll take longer for SE to release them.

  • Eh, I saw someone in Japan stream the game when it was new, it didn’t look all that fun, coming from someone who plays a bunch of MMOs.

  • Miss_Madness

Actually it’s been a year, they already have a fan base and it’s Square. The company loves to spread their projects around. Bravely Default, final fantasy and Kingdom hearts anyone?

Before you ask, yes dragon quest hasn’t only been on Nintendo systems. Square just likes to put things on what ever they want.

    • KiTA

Close. DQ always goes to the system with the biggest install base. DQXI will most likely be on the 3DS like DQIX was.

DQX is an exception, as an MMO.

  • Farid Belkacemi

The benchmark is really cool :)

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

That’s awesome! the benchmark was kool

  • Warboss Aohd

hmm, i wonder………will dis effect da PC Market in Japan? If so….i am curious az ta how dis will play out.

    • KiTA

I was going to rant about your spelling, but then I realized you were an Ork, and Orkz can spel anyway dey like, oi.

      • Warboss Aohd

        now ya iz gettin’ it!

  • Isaac Newton

LOL I never knew this news was been posted XD

  • Draparde

This game has always somewhat interested me.
sadly unless it gets a NA release i’ll be satisfyed with another one of SE’s MMO’s

the Benchmark was kinda funny though, i should probably play it on my desktop. since my laptop sucks and lagged the entire time lol.

  • Ashiedu Nwadiei

Downloading the benchmark now. I want Square-Enix to bring as many games as possible stateside, but it is possible it could fail in the US. There is only room for one or two subscription MMOs here.

  • Hakai Ouji Vegeta #BADMAN

Need that english mod to come thru!!!

  • Musashi234

I honestly forgot about this game oh damn!

  • So their bringing it to PC, but not the West. Bummer.

  • CirnoLakes

GOOD. It’s an MMORPG. It deserves a rightful place on the PC.
