Sakurai On Mega Man And The Other New Characters In Super Smash Bros.

By Ishaan . June 26, 2013 . 10:50am

In his latest column in Famitsu magazine, Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai discusses his reasons for picking Mega Man, the Villager from Animal Crossing and the Wii Fit Trainer to be added to the two new games.

“Something I think that people noticed in the movies and screenshots released, is that the villager and trainer were not choices we made for the sake of cheap novelty,” Sakurai writes, according to a translation by Polygon. In fact, Sakurai mentions earlier on that the Villager was considered but removed from the plans for Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

“Each has their own unique attacks and battle strategies, and they make the game more interesting. If I have an image of a character in my mind that dances around and jibes with what I want, then that’s the most important thing. On the other hand, even if you have a character suited for a fighting game, if you can’t make him stick out from the pack and extract something unique from him, then what can you do?”

Sakurai says the same concept applies to Mega Man as well. Mega Man’s most unique trait is his ability to acquire and use the powers of bosses he defeats, and this was what Sakurai wanted to work into the game, as opposed to simply having him use punches and kicks as he does in the Marvel vs. Capcom games.

“That’s why he’s done up in NES-era proportions rather than something more realistic; that’s why he’s a little expressionless; that’s why his jumping and damage motions and the way he can fire the Mega Buster while walking are all what they are,” Sakurai explains. “It’s all in an effort to present the character.”

    So, if you’re a misfit, you’re in.

    • That just confirms Waluigi… and I’m scared…

      • He should’ve been in long ago along with Wario (who finally got in in Brawl).

        • Beat

No. NO. NOOOOOO. Walugi is just a character who they made up for the various mario sports games. He is not significant AT ALL. If they had to choose a new Mario rep, it should be Bowser Jr, who actually has significance in the series.

          • Rasputing

Or, they could go with no new Mario rep and instead give the slot to one of the many Nintendo series which need more love.

      • evilmajikman

        Probably Birdo and Tingle.

    • NRool

      Leon Powalski confirmed for SSB4?

  • Spirit Macardi

So Sakurai wants unique characters that have great potential movesets and play differently from eachother.

Pretty much confirms Pac-Man won’t be in this then, and that makes me happy :D

    • Josephl64

sakurai could wow us all and come up with amazing movesets for Pac-Man…the man always knows how to surprise us so I wouldn’t ever count out that possibility

      • Spirit Macardi

There’s already a walking head with a great moveset in the games though. His name is Kirby, and I have the odd feeling that Sakurai is quite familiar with him x3

        • Auvers

well Pacman has a couple of inches on Kirby, not to mention arms and legs. I could easily see them being different. I don’t think it’s a confirmation for or against .

          • Solomon_Kano
          • Auvers

sorry, when I said Feet I meant Inches as in he’s taller. And I really don’t think those are arms, regardless Pacmans are longer and that was the point I was trying to make.

          • Solomon_Kano

Ohhh haha. You were talking height. I gotcha.

          • gems eh

except you said arms and legs, not feet

          • Holonboy

            And a big belly.

          • Linhua

… Kirbster… you will remain one of the cutest Nintendo characters of all time.

            … I love you buddy.

        • Mathew Gibbons

That’s a weak argument because being a walking head isn’t what makes either of them unique. I mean Smash Bros has a few “walking head” characters.

          • Spirit Macardi

Kirby does the same thing though: He eats stuff. The difference is that with Kirby it’s interesting since it lets him copy the abilities of others. Pac-Man eats… and… That’s kind of it.

          • Mathew Gibbons

Except his bites only do harm when he’s powered up. A final smash where he moves around like the regular Pac-Man games with his bites pushing players out of the ring would be a pretty neat and unique way of using his eating.

      • Linhua

… lol… I just imagined his Final Smash already.

… he has some kinda start up where it stuns a buncha people in front of them and they are kinda curled up like in a fetal position and then he goes all Wakka Wakka mode on them and then chomps them one by one as they fly off the shelves… err stage.

… or then another would be that he eats one of them fat pellets and everyone starts glowing blue and walking slow and can’t attack and THEN he goes all Wakka Wakka on them as they fly off the screen.

… silly, I know. Carry on, people… >.> … nothing to read here.

        • Josephl64

It would be cool if he could shoot at pellets like “bullet seed”

    • He could be an assist trophy.

Or, God forbid, just an entire stage.

Not sure how Pac-Man came into this discussion but if he reared his head for some reason, I’m pretty sure it’d be one of those two, and the latter seems unlikely if he’s not playable simply because Nintendo and Namco’s arcade days are very seperate things.

That said, if Namco’s getting into this, I know everyone is going to be pining for Tales characters in this and Lloyd would make sense because of his existence on an until-recently Nintendo-only segment of the Tales of property, but personally I’d love to see Klonoa pop up…

      • Spirit Macardi

Well Namco is helping to work on this, and I’d just hate to see Pac-Man take the spot of a more worthy representative simply because he’s well known.

And yes, for my money Klonoa would be perfect. He could work like he did in Namco X Capcom (ie. each attack has him use a different one of his weapons from Legend of the Star Medal), with his Final Smash being the Thunder Hurricane!

Plus Smash Bros is like an instant popularity booster for any obscure series that shows up in it x3

    • Pressing ‘A’ for “waka waka” and ‘B’ for special types of “waka waka”. Pac-Man’s final smash could’ve put everyone in the Pac-Man maze and chomped on. Actually, the latter would be pretty cool to see.

    • Sergio Briceño

There is a whole new pacman coming though. :o

      • Spirit Macardi

And that’s a good reason for why he shouldn’t be in this. Leaving aside the fact that his current design is a skateboard and a pair of sunglasses away from being Poochie, he’s already being milked everywhere else. He’s got enough new stuff coming and he doesn’t need this.

    • Mathew Gibbons

Don’t be so sure. Pac-Man has had games with different enough play styles to work with. You say that this confirms he won’t be in it because you don’t think he’s unique enough but Sakurai and Namco will probably think differently. Capcom managed to turn him into a mech pilot for Street Fighter X Tekken, I think Sakurai can find a way to make Pac-Man unique.

      • Spirit Macardi

That mech pilot thing is a perfect reason why he doesn’t fit though. I mean, if the only way you can add a character to a game is by having him do something he’s never done in any of his own titles, then what’s the point of having him? It negates the entire concept of playing as that character.

The only way I could see it being interesting is if they made him play like he does in Pac-Man 2, where instead of controlling him directly you need to pelt him with rocks to get him to move his lazy ass x3

        • Mathew Gibbons

It was to fit him into SFXT. With Smash Bros he can draw from various titles to have a moveset. Mega Man has fighting game experience yet Sakurai didn’t choose to apply much other than the Mega Upper in favour of a moveset based of his gameplay in games.

My point is they can find a way and Pac-Man has been in games with very different gameplay over the years. If Namco and Sakurai wanted him in the game they’ll find a way to make him work. If they don’t then fair enough but I see no harm in liking the idea until we see if he’s in or not.

  • Herok♞

I can’t wait to see who else they throw in like maybe a SMT character like the progtag from SMT 4 since they have an upcoming fire emblem crossover

    Edit why the random dislike?

    • Fidelis

I sure hope so. Then SMT will boost in popularity tenfold, and I won’t be called a hipster for liking the series anymore..

Although..I do come off a little hipsterish when I tell people about it

“Oh, I never got into pokemon, but I’m a big fan of Shin Megami Tensei. It’s almost the same thing but with demons and mythological figures.”

      Yeah, can’t really blame em..

      • NRool

Somebody called me a Hipster once because I said I’d stopped playing Pokemon Pearl back in the day (we played it for years) because I’d switched to Magical Starsign and Devil Survivor as my two favourite DS RPGs.
So yeah, even though I’ve only really enjoyed Devil Survivor, SMT seems to have an air of “Hipsterism” about it apparently

        • British_Otaku

Hipster is something that’ll get thrown around to address any uncommon, picky or indie behaviour these days. A series of largely low profile but cool unlocalised RPGs with many subseries is bound to be seen in that way or have a bit of that air.

          Doesn’t really mean much. >_>

      • Pokemon is fun too. :/ But meh SMT series is awesome, I don’t like the term hpster. :/

    • brwcrw

Personally I could see them adding Jack Frost above any other SMT character.

      • That’d be cool.

      • Herok♞

        that would work

      • Just Tim

        Mastema would be cooler.

      • SuperSailorV

I think Mara would fit the aesthetic of the game perfectly.

    • That would be cool, but I doubt it for some reason.

    • Anime10121

Can DEFINITELY see a SMT character in there, and maybe even a Xenoblade one!

  • komiko12

When I read that he didn’t include those characters for cheap novelty, it really made me think that he really put a lot of thought when he decided to Wii Fit trainer.

    • Virevolte

Surprisingly, that’s the character that I want to try most, and I never played at any kind of Wii Fit games. She gives me good vibes.

  • SonicRulez

“Something I think that people noticed in the movies and screenshots released, is that the villager and trainer were not choices we made for the sake of cheap novelty,”

I’m not sure very many people noticed that at all. I’m not sure I can see Wii Fit Trainer as anything but a cheap novelty.

    • I’m not sure there’s ever really been a pure novelty character in Smash. Pichu comes close, but even he had his unique merits.

From what I recall, the Villager seemed to have a very limited, close-range and clumsy move set, offset by his ability to catch basically anything and throw it back. He seems all about the well-timed counter, which is kind of a cool way to mix up the gameplay.

Mega Man is very projectile-centric in nature, which I think is how he’ll stand out, in that you’ll need to understand his moveset and use it properly to really get anywhere. Most Smash projectiles are ways to get pot shots or quick damage between proper assaults, but ol’ Rock seems to be much more about careful aim and timing for best results.

As for Wii Fit’s Trainer, she seems a bit more standard, being melee-focused and based on her movements maybe even a female heavyweight, which I think was generally lacking before now. Her variance is going to be in how she handles and how her moves function compared to everyone else, but that doesn’t mean she should just be dismissed as a gimmick, as the same could be said for the vast majority of Smash’s roster; Mario and Link are both largely melee fighters with some projectiles, but nobody is saying they’re interchangeable characters.

And again, this is all just based on what I’ve seen and inferred from trailers. I could be a bit off base on any of these, but my point is, I think every character introduced so far has a reason to exist.

  • Prinnydoom

Loving the decisions for characters in this new title. I mean come on wii fit trainer. What a curve ball makes things hell of a lot more interesting.

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Why is every image about the little kid so freaking creepy?!

    • It’s just that he is veeeeeery happy to be free from “Animal Concentration Camp” imprisonment.

      • He chooses to move there so that isn’t exactly… accurate.

        • What’s it to you for calling it “accurate”? The character has no backstory to even consider going to an isolated region, where anthropomorphic animals like Tom Nook go and trick him into being in a ridiculous debt and stuck in perpetual slavery, for years on end, as a good idea. Not to mention their latest scheme into making him both the mayor and janitor of the town!

I’m pretty sure that what I said is more… accurate. I mean, just look at the poor soul. Stuck with an almost perma-Stepford Smile.

          • Tom Nook never tricks the character into anything. But ok. The backstory is that he simply wants to move out on his own. As for making him the mayor yah.. that was forced on him, but it isn’t like that is a hard job. As for janitor I am not sure what you mean?

          • Virevolte

Well… there’s nobody else willing to take care of the grass.

          • Except the villagers plant flowers.

    • It’s his face.

  • Solomon_Kano

Glad to see Sakurai’s thinking outside the box with his choices. After the Trainer, I really can’t put any kind of expectations as to who we might see next.

That said, all of my want for some Golden Sun representation. Oh, and Advance Wars! At least a stage!

    • Anime10121

Would be nice to see some Golden Sun rep, kinda off topic, but didnt they announce a Golden Sun for 3DS? Coulda sworn I remember it being announced somewhere, and I havent heard about it since.

      • Solomon_Kano

Nah, no Golden Sun announced for 3DS yet. They need to get on that though! Camelot’s busy with Mario Golf right now, but I’m sure they’ll do one soon.

      • Ehren Rivers

There was a Golden Sun for the NDS, called Dark Dawn, which followed the story of some of the character’s children and (much like the original Golden Sun) ended in a cliffhanger very obviously meant to produce a Lost Age-esque second half. It’s possible if that game is still being made, it’ll be made for the 3DS instead?

        • Anime10121

Okay yeah, thats the one I remember! Dont know how I thought it was for 3DS, but yeah, thats definitely the one! I gotta pick that up, because it looked great!

          • Ehren Rivers

I can’t speak to how others will feel about it, but I thought it was resoundingly fantastic. Really captured the spirit of the originals. :)

          • Anime10121

Well, Ima definitely give it a go when I get the extra cash!

    • Suicunesol

Yeah, would be nice for publicity, but I doubt it. Golden Sun just isn’t high profile enough, especially in Japan.

      • Solomon_Kano

Yea, I figured. But, hey, maybe they’ll surprise me.

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

          Isaac was in Brawl….

          • Solomon_Kano

As an assist trophy. I’m not asking for Golden Sun assist trophies.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Which is why we should get Felix. Alex for a villain! GS is relevant enough to be in the game

      • $36598391

A Golden Sun character would be awesome in SSB 3DS/WiiU
I’m still hoping that the two GBA Golden Sun games get added to the 3DS eshop

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

I want them on the WiiU.

          • $36598391

How about both the 3DS and Wii U?
the 3DS can easily run digital GBA games, dunno why Nintendo isn’t releasing more of them on there

      • Felix was just a clone of Isaac. He was even allowed to use Isaac’s best weapon: Sol Blade. Isaac is the best Golden Sun Rep, anyway.

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Felix had different Psy attacks,I bet you’re one of those people who didnt go crazy with the Djinns/WeaponEquips mix/match

          • Your bet is misplaced. I always do the mix and matching, especially when I get enough Djinns for my party. The Lost Age gave me even more options with the addition of an 8-member party formation, obviously. I still say that Felix and Isaac were very similar in many builds, unlike the other elemental members with their counterparts.

        • $36598391

Not true, Felix and Issac are two completely different characters

      • grevlinghore

        That`d be cool as fuck.

        • I fucking know right.

          • grevlinghore

Yes. Fucking dang diddely darn it. Fuck.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    Shulk From Xenoblade
    Zael From Last story
    Neku Sakuraba

    …make it happen

    • kool_cid414

I’d like this too, along with Aeron from Pandora’s tower but that might just be me.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

I want Aeron more than Zael

  • $36598391

Why did they pick Megaman over Megaman X or Zero…

    • Just Tim

Because the MAHVEL community dismissed Classic Mega Man as “kiddy” and Zero God-Tier. Worse, they fear Classic Mega Man’s trademark power copying to be broken.

    • Solomon_Kano

Personally, I feel Classic was the only way to go for a Nintendo crossover unless they were gonna bring .EXE back from the dead. When I think of X, my mind doesn’t go to Nintendo (even though my favorite X game was on SNES), because most of that series isn’t with Nintendo. Classic Mega Man, on the other hand, is almost entirely associated with Nintendo.

As for Zero… he’s been in two crossover fighters already, he’s had his time. Unless they did MMZ Zero, which would’ve been cool.

      • Armane

MMZ Zero has been in a crossover fighter though; SNK vs Capcom: SVC Chaos.

        • Solomon_Kano

Ah, true. Forgot about SVC. Well, then I guess Zero’s just out altogether.

    • Because why not?

Both Megas are largely identical. X’s moveset might mesh a bit more naturally with what is established for humanoid Smash characters (air dash, wall kick, etc.), but I think the appeal was in the varied move set, the fact he’d be a strong ranged fighter (which is a bit rare in Smash’s rosters) with some interesting tactical considerations for players based on his unique move set, and (the selling point for Rock over X) just the raw nostalgia and tie to Nintendo, historically.

Besides, I haven’t seen many people asking for Zero, but a ton of requests for Mega Man have been all over the place at least since Brawl was a twinkle in Sakurai’s eye. Zero’s already in Capcom’s more modern MvC games, anyway, and his melee focus would probably have him struggling to stand out next to Link or the FE cast unless they went with the Zero seen in the GBA spinoffs and his assorted weapon sets.

    • evilmajikman

Because Megaman is the originator. He also had more games on NES consoles than X had on SNES. X was more of a pro-Sony guy with X4-8 and Operation Maverick Hunter. So it was either classic, .exe, or ZX. And its classic’s 25th Anniversary, so he got the vote.

  • Yan Zhao

As a fan of Megaman, I am very pleased with what Nintendo has done with him in Smash Bros. They really nailed the character and that feeling I had when playing the NES games, and dare I say they did a better job than any attempt Capcom ever did when throwing him as a guest character in any other non-Megaman game.

  • hickorypan

I know it’s fun to imagine crazy additions like SMT or whatever, but people are really going way overboard with their fantasies. This isn’t Dream Match Infinity+1, it’s a Nintendo brawler which happens to include third party characters if they contribute to the game’s comical/frantic gameplay style and have an iconic status as a video game character, ideally with some kind of relationship to Nintendo.

Most characters either represent one of Nintendo’s franchises or provide something unique in regards to their style of play (usually both). That’s what they’re considering when they put people into this, nothing else.

I’d actually like to see less clutter in the roster. There’s something so right about early installments in fighting franchises, like the original 8 characters in Street Fighter II or 7 in Mortal Kombat 1. It’s tight, less convoluted, makes gameplay balance easier to fix and doesn’t age as badly.

    • AkuLord3

I don’t mind small rosters for games mostly cuz its a new fighter, it won’t have alot but for new installments having less characters…is stupid. Not saying it should have over 100 characters but enough characters for different kinds of battles. Also “doesn’t age as badly” the hell does that mean…Mortal Kombat 1 is AGE LIKE SHIET (same with SF2 at least for me i can’t go back to that game as well).

    • Solomon_Kano

Snake in Brawl kinda throws that out the window, and MGS has had a much less storied history with Nintendo than some of the suggestions here.

    • puchinri

While I do want a large roster, I do agree with you on a whole. Less clutter in general is nice, and even if we do get a large roster, it should be of mainly Nintendo characters or those with a stronger connection to the company (and have some status).

  • puchinri

And boy do Sakurai (and whatever teams he works with) do a great job with presentation. I am so excited for the game, and every little announcement that comes out is just gonna get me more hyped. I cannot wait~. ♥

I’m really hoping Sakurai takes it easy though too and that development won’t be stressful on him and his body.

    • When he says he has to resort to using a trackball, I often wonder what kind of things he works on for the project himself. If the pain becomes too much, do you think he would be okay with just sitting in a tall chair and yelling orders from then on?

      • puchinri

Same here, makes me wonder. Hah! I would hope that would work if it came to it. I’d also hope that we would get to see a snippet of that. >u<

  • Protos_Heis

Instead of toon link we need majoras mask link where he can use his masks, and his smash can be deity link

    • Ixbran

  • Ixbran

I need Takamaru and Bayonetta in this game, please Nintendo, make it happen.

Takamaru is Nintendo property so he could easily get in, and I would love to see a samurai representing ancient japanese culture in this game. I would also love Bayonetta since Bayo 2 coming out as a WiiU exclusive, she would be a perfect 3rd party rep for Platinum Games, it would really help build hype up for both smash4 and Bayonetta 2.

    • Solomon_Kano

If we’re going to see someone from Platinum, much as I love Bayo, I’d actually rather see the red hero from The Wonderful 101 in Smash. TW101 is something the Wii U has completely to itself, while Bayo as a series has hit all 3 platforms, even if the sequel is exclusive.

Plus, it’d be a nice way to cross-promote that. Anything that helps a new Platinum IP sell is good to me.

      • Ixbran

Well also take into account, as awesome as the Wonderful 101 looks, which do you think would build more hype: Red Hero or Bayonetta?

Platinum Games have already said they want Bayo to be in Smash4, and that its all up to Nintendo. And from a developer point of view, Bayonetta would be the wiser choice.

W101 isn’t even out yet, so there would be mixed results if Red Hero were added. However Bayonetta already has an established fan base, a very large one at that. I am sure both Platinum Games and Nintendo know that if Bayonetta appeared in Smash4, it would help boost hype for both games (SSB4 & Bayo2) and greatly increase their sales dramatically when they come out.

Going for Red Hero would be a major risk that may, or may not, pay off in the end. But going with Bayonetta would be a Win/Win situation for both Nintendo and Platinum Games.

        • Solomon_Kano

Oh, I know which would build more hype, but that’s the thing: Bayo 2’s already got a suitable amount of hype. Of course, Smash would increase that even more, but I feel the TW101 is the one more in need of that promotion. As you said yourself, Bayo has a sizable established fanbase as is. While people wouldn’t jump for joy at TW101’s inclusion, it would introduce it to a larger crowd that may not pay attention to it otherwise.

I don’t really see the risk in using the red hero. He wouldn’t decrease sales for Smash. Would he benefit Smash? No, but Smash would benefit TW101 and, with Nintendo publishing that as well, that’s only a good thing for them. Platinum’s last new IP (Anarchy Reigns) was a SPECTACULAR flop. I’d just hate to see that repeated in TW101. There’s no doubt that Bayo will succeed, but I can’t say the same for that title.

          • Ixbran

well as i said before, as nice as Red Hero would be interesting to see, Platinum Games have already stated that they would be “more than happy” for Bayonetta to be included in Smash.4 as a Platinum Games representative, she was nominated by Hideki Kamiya him self.

And besides Bayonetta is, slowly, becoming PGames face series, like Sonic is for Sega, Mega Man for Capcom, and Mario for Nintendo. It would make more sense for the companies face character to be selected for a Smash appearance, dont you think?

  • I’m going to orgasm when I play this. ^_^

  • Lionxie

Klonoa = instant buy for me. I would also like to see some mention of Golden Sun and Advance Wars if possible. Those under-represented but great games need some love!

  • Virevolte

When is Reggie making an appearence in SSBB ? ~

    • J_Joestar

Our bodies aren’t ready for Reggie to be in SSB

  • Placido Michael Cortorreal Flo

Welli bet some people will be angrh at my thoughts on a character that should be put in there but; if i have to add any third party character it would be Goemon…from Mystical Ninja; anyone remembers him from SNES era? For me he’s more representative to Konami than Snake

  • Aaron Madkins

Neku Sakuraba please. His play style would be interesting to see

  • Byron Kerrison II

So since Nintendo is publishing Bayonetta 2…
Does anyone think we might get to see Bayonetta/Jeanne make an appearance. Even as some kind of assist characters?
