Compile Heart’s Curry-Making RPG For Vita Is Headed To North America

By Ishaan . July 6, 2013 . 5:01pm

Aksys have licensed Compile Heart’s PS Vita dungeon crawler, Holy Sorcery Story, for release in North America, the publisher announced at Anime Expo today.

Titled, Sorcery Saga: The Curse of the Great Curry God, the game will be released later this year. The game plays like a roguelike and involves making a legendary curry.

This is unexpected. Well Anime Expo just kind of made up for that ****y E3 Vita show (for me at least).

    • Tyler Beale

They still didn’t talk about what I was hoping they would – XBLAZE: Code Embryo…

      • TheExile285

Well if it follows the pattern of these other localizations, it will be announced sometime after Japanese release.

        • Tyler Beale

Yet they announced that other game that’s out now in Japanese arcades, out in Japan this fall, and out here next year. You know…Azure Grimo–no, BlazBlu-No, Azure Grimo–BlazBlu–GAAAAHHH!!!

  • Lightthrower

    Great news today concerning localizations!

  • Highasthesky

    ……Vita has games now….i’m so happy :D

    • Altin

That is a very dumb and disingenious statement you just dropped there.

      • Highasthesky

        How so?

        • Brandonmkii

          Because it already had games?

        • Altin

Considering that the Vita has a good library, including JRPG’s – not to mention the upcoming gems such as Ys IV and Toukiden…. Yeah, you are quite full of shite, Sir.

As Brendonmkii mentions – the Vita has a library, may it not pierce through your blatant, very fragile ignorant and immature nature; one thing that the Vita does not lack is the amount of games that are coming for the Handheld. But who am I trying to teach of anything better – considering you seem to have taken trolling classes on 4Chan and noted down some buzzwords you stumbled upon there.

          • brian

            Calm down?
He probably felt like it had too few that appeal to him for justifying a +$250 system.
Especially competing with the 3DS at below $200, with a similarly built up library.

          • Altin

            I know, I know.

Thing is, you can be sarcastic and funny. He missed both aspects, whether he was trying to be serious, or just making a joke. Add to the fact that I just worked a full night shift…ah well. I like both 3DS and Vita, no competition there.

          • Highasthesky

Wait, it took me a while but i think i get why you have this stick up your ass. You took my comment in a hateful manner as if i was saying “this is the first time i’v seen games on the Vita” correct me if i’m wrong, while all i was saying is with today’s announcements the vita now has a decent library of games. IMO it was getting there before but hadn’t quite made it. So anything else? maybe i’m wrong and you have a stick up your ass for a different reason, all you dude.

          • Altin

I guess you can mark me surprised that a game like Sei Madou Monogatari (not to say that it is bad – I am a huge sucker for many Compile Heart games!) sways you to the conviction that the game library of the Vita has suddenly turned good or interesting enough that it makes you realize that the Vita has games now. As mentioned – with P4G, Wipeout 2048, Soul Sacrifice Gravity Rush, DJMAX Techinka Tune, PSO2, Project Diva f, Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus and so on, the Vita has a library. Granted, more exclusives would be a given, and thankfully with Ys IV; GE2, Freedom Wars, Tearaway, KZ:Mercenary and Toukiden, we are going to get these too.

As for some of my abusive remarks that are in the previous comments – forgive me on that behalf. Today’s exhaustion got the better of me.

          • Highasthesky

It’s not one game its a collection of games that i feel are must-haves, i’m not about to list them all but the 3 games announce today were on that list. Compare that with my current collection of Vita games that i feel are also must-haves, i now feel the vita library has broken into decent. So what next? :D

          • Altin

Hm..So I take you are more of a JRPG type of guy. I am looking forward to Danganronpa and Demon Gaze myself, especially latter.

What next? I tell you: Ys IV. I am going to Pre-Order the living c*ap out of it, once it gets any kind of classy XSEED Limited Edition :D
If hard games are your cup o’ tea, Hotline Miami is great. Just bought it a week ago – it’s just like Ys, worth buying for the soundtrack alone. Otherwise, gotta wait about a month for gamescom. Here’s hoping for some more games from either Inafune or Studio Japan.

            Anyhow, cheers mate.

          • Highasthesky

So many games coming this year to Vita and 3DS my wallet is screaming for the money i don’t have :( Including everything on your list i’m looking forward to
valhalla knights 3 (think i spelled that right?) this years gonna suck money wise but at least i know i’ll always want something :) Peace bro!

          • http://amc9988.deviantart.com/ amc99

ikr, I just thought that I want to buy SMT4, RF4, Project x Zone after my exam finish. And now in the near future we will have demon gaze, curry rpg, Ys Vita, phoenix wright 5,bravely default … I really don’t think my wallet and free time can handle it… Gahh Must became A NEET FOR A YEAR

  • Margaret Chan

I wasn’t expecting this but it sounds interesting enough. I love Aksys and so I’ll support them.

Not a day 1 purchase however.

  • benhofb

OH MY GOD. I can’t keep up with all these announcements. You guys dont know what your doing to my heart.

    • Tyler Beale

      Now where is XBLAZE…

      • TheExile285

        Patience lol.

      • benhofb

Hah, probably one of these days. I just hope they bring over all of the versions of that instead of just the PS3 version or something.

        • Tyler Beale

It’s the only announcement I’ve been looking forward to ever since Arc posted the opening on their YouTube channel (besides BBCP of course).

  • http://Tree.com/ Busterblader

If this is coming to america does that mean theres still hope for shinovi versus? (senran kagura)

    • TheExile285

      Haha, no.

      • Highasthesky

Second that, but i’m loving the game :D

      • http://Tree.com/ Busterblader

Hahaha yeah your right i’ll be right back. *commits suicide*

  • dynamic-zx

I was hoping for Fate/Extra CCC. Darn.

    • Leon_Tekashi

Leave that to Aksys. They’ll get to it eventually.
      Edit: I fixed Aksys.

      • Nightmare637

        ……..

        • ChiffonCake

I’m guessing Leon meant to say Aksys, since they’re the ones who published F/E.

          • Leon_Tekashi

            Yeah, my bad. .__.;

  • ChiffonCake

    Madou Monogatari with mota’s art.

    Yes.

    • http://www.jb2x.com/wordpress/ JB2X

      Hear hear, my brother!

  • http://linkapics.tumblr.com/ Linka

Hahaha I’m amused that they announced this, but I’m actually happy! I liked this game when I first saw it.

Glad to see my Vita will be getting plenty of attention for a while.

  • ragingmerifes

Vita is leveling up. And with that Persona 5 news, maybe…

    • Tyler Beale

      What Persona 5 news?

      • ragingmerifes

        Index/Atlus registered persona5.jp today.

        • Tyler Beale

          Link or it didn’t happen.

          • mirumu

I have no link, but it’s in the global whois database for DNS records so it’s true. Registered by “Index corporation” on the 25th of June.

Edit: Oh wait, they updated it a few days ago. Now owned by “Persona Co.,LTD” rather than Index. Guess they did that because of the bankruptcy.

          • ragingmerifes

            http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=615726
It is also on Gametrailers and Gematsu.

    • TheExile285

Not trying to troll but don’t get your hopes up, just don’t. Its not coming to Vita.

      • RoxasTheUnknown1

I dont care what it comes to and while I do agree the chances are abysmal, remember that no one saw SMT IV ending up where that did. So it is possible. Personally I see Ps3 and possibly 360.

        • Tom_Phoenix

No offence, but SMT IV ending up on the 3DS was completely predictable, especially after Strange Journey (it’s still considered a mainline title and was originally intended to be IV).

          • RoxasTheUnknown1

It ended up on the 3DS due to the massive user base and them being able to save money. One of which the Vita lacks. Your statement is like saying KH3 should be on the 3DS because of 3D. SJ was never IV. Ever. They talked about this. Point is. Even Atlus knows P5 would be a system seller hence why its not impossible. P4G kinda gave them a window on that.

          • ChiffonCake

Actually, I clearly remember seeing Kaneko say that SJ was, for all intents and purposes, SMTIV, but they gave it a different title because it doesn’t take place in Tokyo. Yeah, yeah, that was said before the current SMTIV existed at all, but it just shows that SJ indeed was, at a point, IV.

Unfortunately the only source I could find for this is in Japanese, oh well. http://megamisj.atlusnet.jp/arthur/index.html

          • RoxasTheUnknown1

I remember reading about that too. The staff refused to acknowledge it as IV officially due to no Tokyo so they just made it a spin-off of the main games. The point to the above poster is that IV being on the 3DS has nothing to due with SJ. Sili posted the interview. From the get go they wanted IV on a handheld. Only got 2 options. Ones booming. The other…..not so much. But we have Holy Curry for that now. ^-^

          • Tom_Phoenix

Strange Journey isn’t a spin-off; it’s still a mainline title. It’s just that (like If…) it isn’t numbered, but that doesn’t mean it’s not part of the main series.

My point was that SJ was already indicative of their switch to handhelds, hence why they wanted IV on a handheld from the get go. Ergo, there was almost no way that SMT IV would end up on a home console. And since, like you said, there were only two options, SMT IV being on 3DS was in no way a shocking revelation.

          • RoxasTheUnknown1

The devs themselves called it a spin off WITHIN the main series. I.E FFVII CC/DC. Still a spin off but within the main canon if you can even call it that. And SJ was not indicative of that as they cite the shift in the jp market as part of the reason. Years ago even before SJ there wernt many saying “I don’t see this on Ps3″. People WERE shocked(obviously not everybody xD) hence why Atlus themselves addressed why they did it.

      • Impressionnant

Most likely will be multi-plat, due to Index’s financial trouble.

      • ragingmerifes

It is possible, since the Vita is getting popular with JRPGs nowadays, and Atlus is not the kind of company that affords making an AAA game for PS4 and Xbox One, so I guess they will stick to portable market. AND considering how P4G sold well enough despite being a port and the fact that they already know the userbase, it is possible.
That, or the PS3. Or both.
Maybe the Wii U, if they wanted to surprise us, but I don’t think Atlus could try betting on it. Most of the hype over SMT X FE was over FE, so they had a bonus credit, but a Persona for WU? I sincerely would be surprised.

  • enorka miho

Great great day for vita! Keep them coming in!! Now if only steins gate is on vita and tales series and final fantasy type zero…. My days would be the best of the best since this E3!! By the way iI wanted to thank these company for having faith in us… Yipee!!

  • almostautumn

Holy shit; I can’t believe it’s actually coming!
I think I’ve added this game to an E-cart about 20 times already, but each time decided to just wait it out a bit more. Very, very glad about this.

  • Elvick

Here’s hoping Aksys stay awesome with their retail releases.

  • MrRobbyM

Okay. So these announcements are all I needed to confirm my Vita purchase. Hopefully there’s a price drop or better yet, a new, cheaper model by the time these games come out.

But for now, I’ll buy myself a 3DS and Animal Crossing *_*

    • psycho_bandaid

I am shocked they haven’t dropped the price yet. I think they might be waiting for Killzone to come out.

      • MrRobbyM

yeah, me too. I’m really hoping it happens soon.

  • d19xx

    Finally a roguelike! Do want!

  • http://crono-trigger.tumblr.com/ SilverCrono

Awww yeah! Been waiting on this!

  • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

I’ll play it. These type of games can get addicting.

  • puchinri

Yay~! How exciting! I really don’t plan on getting a Vita for a long while from now, but I may pick up the game just so that I have a copy ready. ♥

  • Zak Ledward

AKSYS YOU LOVELY SOB! I now have reason to visit your news page besides BlazBlue: CP

  • Nyekun

Too bad Compile Heart games are all mediocre. Though I must be an idiot for buying every game from them that’s been localized by NISA.

  • mockturtle

Five awesome localization announcements in a span of 24 hours.

    Today was a good day.

  • brian

Fun fact: a lot of us seemed to think this was a new IP, but it goes quite a ways back.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madou_Monogatari

    • Nightmare637

      The more you know!

    • ChiffonCake

Yeah. I’ve been interested in those games ever since I got into Puyo Puyo a while back, and really didn’t expect a new game to come out.

Hmm… speaking of, I wonder if we might see any references to this one in the next Puyo Puyo? Probably unlikely, considering that Sega has nothing to do with Sorcery Saga here, but eh…

    • Kai2591

Thank you for the enlightenment, senpai.

    • Testsubject909

      Woah… learn something new.

    • CirnoLakes

I’ve been playing the Madou Monogatari games for a long time. They were some of my favourite stuff that would come out for SEGA systems. In fact I think the relationship between SEGA and Compile is what caused the Neptunia games to be the way they are.

The reason I think many didn’t realize this was a Madou Monogatari game, was because the protagonist doesn’t look like the classic Madou Monogatari protagonist we’re all used to. The old Madou Monogatari protagonist had brown hair and brown eyes.

    • Raharu95

Now that’s interesting~ and also good news since it seems Aksys is still localizing~

  • Solomon_Kano

Now here’s a surprise. I don’t plan on buying this, but it’s nice to see. It did well for CH in Japan, so hopefully it’ll find an audience here as well.

  • Erikdayo

Yes! I’ve always wanted to play these games but never got around to it. I think I sort of had a block because I can’t really read much kanji. Hopefully this reboot of sorts is satisfying enough. :) No Arle, but that’s alright.

  • Aristides

Glorious!!!! I really want them to bring Destiny/Additional CCC though ♥. I appreciate the Vita love, I just hope they don’t forget about us! :P

  • RoxasTheUnknown1

And all is well. Like I said. If NISA doesnt pick up a C.H game, then Aksys will. Been like that for a while now.

  • Mr_SP

;_; The Vita is finally getting games.

    • Testsubject909

More games is what you want to say I think.

The whole Vita has no game is getting as tired and as false as those jokes of the PS3 has no games.

Though it would depend on your personal tastes in games of course, and whether or not you have a varied interest that spans more then just one generation of games.

      • Mr_SP

Yes, but it’s funnier that way. Plus, I’m in Australia… the release timetable for Vita games over here is… sparse. There shouldn’t be any less than in America, but I’m pretty much getting surprised if there’s something nice on the online store each week, because I can’t expect nice things in the shops. I mean, I have Dokuro, and Persona 4, and Virtue’s Last Reward, and they’re all good, but the Vita is still a bit under-represented.

        • Testsubject909

          Oof… Australia… hang in there.

    • DyLaN

There a lot of Vita titles in Japan. Most of it doesn’t get out of Japan.

  • leeorv

Yay! Awesome! I really wanted this to get localized, and now it IS!

  • tubers

Hope this is a sign that there’s likely to be a localization of Neptunia: Rebirth.

  • Kai2591

Holy Sorcery! The impossible has happened! :)

So Anime Expo is sort of like the E3 for niche Japanese games huh? haha

    • Ladius

Japan Expo and Anime Expo are the otaku E3, yeah :)

  • shuyai

so as a european can we expect the same release at later date? or US only?

    • http://steamcommunity.com/id/noumi_kud Kudryavka

      I’m surprised you would hope that considering Aksys’ track record for us Europeans… ^^;

      • Ladius

Apparently, Rising Star Games registered a site for Sorcery Story.

        • http://steamcommunity.com/id/noumi_kud Kudryavka

Oh cool! Strange no one else mentioned that. How did you find out?

And where are my manners?! Thanks for the heads up man.

  • ekibyougami

    Sweet!

I’m still crossing my fingers some western publishers would pick up Monster Monpiece (I doubt it, but it never hurts hope!). Or Neptune Idol PP.

    • Ladius

I think Monpiece won’t be localized, but the Neptunia games are right in NISA’s alley.

  • artemisthemp

Now I just wait for a EU publisher.

    • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Why? With no region lock you could import it just fine. It’s not like this is a Nintendo system~.

      • artemisthemp

I know, just fear there may be Story DLC I can’t access

        • omenaaa

          There aren’t any story DLCs

  • Testsubject909

Sweet. Myself, like others below it would seem, was hoping for this. I’ll be picking this up on day 1.

  • Ryan Chiu

Glorious day! Another RPG for the Vita! Can’t wait!

  • Ladius

Day one purchase for me, more awesome roguelike Zerodiv curry action is always good in my book. Have they confirmed this will get a retail edition?

  • Smooosh

    I guess it’s probably a digital release? :/
Would love to import this one, sounds like a lot of fun.

    • Ladius

It’s Aksys, the one that is releasing a PSP otome game on UMD in mid 2013 :P I doubt it will be digital only, though I’m also waiting for a confirmation.

      • Smooosh

Huh, thanks for the info. :)
Hope they at least consider it.

      • Smooosh

Huh, thanks for the info. :)
Hope they at least consider it.

  • CirnoLakes

    Good.
All the Japanese games not released over here for the Vita definitely aren’t helping its sales.

  • http://www.salarymandaishi.net/ SalarymanDaishi

Ooh! Promising news, given how rare roguelikes are these days, let alone ones that feature chibi cutesy. Tried to hunt down Famitsu reception or even reception in general but failed miserably. So, just how proficient is it?

  • Magnumsally

I beat this game ( I imported) and its really not a good game. In fact its almost downright bad

    • Ferrick

as bad as last rebellion and tokitowa ?

      • Magnumsally

nothing is as bad as that lol

        • RoxasTheUnknown1

          Mimana Iyar Chronicle. xD

    • Testsubject909

Care to get into details about it?

It’s hard to know what you mean when you don’t really say anything substantial.

      • ShadowDivz

I always love when people elaborate like this.

      • Magnumsally

        Sorry.

        - The game roguelike gameplay isnt as good as shiren or even the PMD games.

        - The backgrounds of the dungeons are pretty plain. And the character models are ugly

        - I just didnt like it

        • Ereek

Uh, while I respect your opinion, and I myself haven’t played the game to comment on it, saying “X game isn’t as good as Y game” isn’t really a complaint. I don’t think Shiren is as good of Roguelike as Rogue, but that doesn’t invalidate Shiren.

        • Testsubject909

I’m honestly still confused, sorry for having to take more of your time.

The roguelike gameplay isn’t as good as Shiren… In what way? Is the difficulty too low? The battle system too simplistic and streamlined? Is there just no loot, no customization, no real threat to your safety? Is there no good variation in the enemies or in the actions that you can take? Is there too limiting a skillset for your character to make use of in the combat system? Is the pacing just wrong and the difficulty doesn’t gradually rise well enough or does combat just generally feel unsatisfying due to a lack of visual input, auditive input or proper reward to effort?

It’s really just the gameplay aspect that I’m confused about. The graphics I can see by myself and judge by myself.

But I can understand if you personally don’t like it.

          • Magnumsally

Its much too easy and the gameplay is streamlined. I am learning that people cant read my mind

          • Magnumsally

Its much too easy and the gameplay is streamlined. I am learning that people cant read my mind

          • Testsubject909

Really can’t. But at least now I get a clearer idea of what you’re trying to say.

        • Ladius

With all due respect, your criticism sounds rather subjective and generic.

I have heard good things about the game so far, and it isn’t like we’re drowning in roguelikes. I don’t expect this to be on the same level as Fate Paradox, but still it should be a nice portable adventure.

  • ShadowDivz

    Love the artstyle.

  • jujubee88
  • Joshua Myers

I will most likely give it a try loved all of Compile Hearts games

  • Freud_Hater

    Looks fun :O I’ll give it a shot :P

  • http://superkurisutina.tumblr.com/ Kurisu Makise

The gameplay looked fun from the videos I looked up, though the graphics…aye… I admit when it was announced I was kinda disappointed but NISA quickly took care of that, so now I can give the title a fair look. I hope Aksys goes all out and presents a wacky and fun localization, I’d buy it if so.

  • Pichi

Very happy they were able to find a publisher for this one. Had my eyes on this for a good while.
