GREE’s New RPG, Saga of Fantasm: A, Has Square Enix Talent Behind It

By Ishaan . July 16, 2013 . 8:30am

GREE are preparing to launch a brand new free-to-play RPG, titled Saga of Fantasm: A for iOS and Android devices, and this one has Square Enix talent behind it. Toshiro Tsuchida, who was the battle director of Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XIII, is directing the game. Tsuchida left Square Enix in 2011.

Meanwhile, the game’s producer is Takeshi Arakawa, who is also an ex-Square Enix employee. Arakawa served as supervising director on Dissidia: Final Fantasy. Finally, Nobuo Uematsu is composing the music for Saga of Fantasm: A.

Story-wise, Saga of Fantasm: A sounds like your typical “boy meets girl and goes on journey to discover their destiny” setup, but unlike a lot of mobile RPGs, it actually looks like it has a decent budget behind it. The game will have 3D visuals and you can find the first screenshots below.

Pre-registration for the game is open now.

  • This looks really good. “Sigh” I want to be friends with GREE, but every time I try to I wake up later with a headache and my wallet missing.

    • DyLaN

Lol. GREE and your wallet is having a love affair? :P

      • More like my wallet is being taken hostage lol =P

  • MrTyrant

That guy reminds me to Shadow Heart’s main character.

    • James

Looks similar and has the ability to Fuse into monsters. I would say it’s the same character!

    • Warboss Aohd

      beat me to it.

  • Highasthesky

Ash huh? kinda reminds me of a fail character from a popular children anime.

    • KnifeAndFork

looks like a cross between the main from Last Ranker and The Last Remnant

      • Highasthesky

Yea the character looks bad-ass but the name used in the screenshot could have been better.

  • Kevadu

Cards, cards, why is it always cards?! Can’t mobile RPG devs come up with any other mechanics?

    • Namuro

I guess cards in fantasy RPGs are equivalent to guns in real warfare LOL.

But hey, putting game mechanics aside, Japanese consumers love great art in their games, and what better way to show it off than on the cards!

  • lol square enix and talent…. im sorry, anyway game looks graphically nice im a little suprised by what they can do on mobiles sometime, otherwise it looks well bland, at least if uematsu is making the music we know the soundtrack will be memorable

  • KnifeAndFork

    GREE? oh thats just great….

  • CirnoLakes

I think we can all aGREE that this is a bad idea.

Why? Why did I make that pun?

    • H_Floyd

I’m okay with it. I was worried that Arc the Lad/Front Mission creator had gone off the grid.

    • Virevolte

I’m relieved. These Animal Crossing puns aren’t dumber in french.

  • SpectralRaiden

    Why is it always cards…?

    • AndyLC

’cause cards are a formula that works on mobile and GREE has experience with card games.

  • RikuoAmero

Is it just me, or does the UI look familiar to Guilty Dragon?

  • Heavenly_King

what is this Gree stuff? some kind of Smartphone OS?

    • CirnoLakes

It’s a cell phone game publisher. With some decent enough games, but notoriously bad service.

Aside from basically stealing people’s money. There’s all sorts of minor complaints like region locking.

      • Hikaru Lighthalzen

yeah , i really hate that region locking thing , they make me needs to use proxy every time i want to play [email protected] million live :/

    • AndyLC

The card is mightier than the sword.

  • Trotmeister

More importantly, Tsuchida is the creator of Front Mission series, easily the most complex and mature thing Square has ever released.

    • H_Floyd

I’m so glad someone mentioned this. And let’s not forget about another excellent tactical RPG series he created, Arc the Lad.

These two series are far more important achievements than his FF work.

  • jeka69

Uematsu is good enough for a reason to play. Why, yes, I’m his fanboy.

  • Gilgamesh2025

    GREE …

  • Vash bane

    those re some smexy cards…

  • Yuuki

the language sounds kinda like the one from gravity rush

  • Hikaru Lighthalzen

the trailer seems epic , but its GREE………..
