Namco Releasing Saint Seiya: Brave Soldiers In U.S. To Gauge The Fanbase

By Ishaan . July 19, 2013 . 11:00am

Saint Seiya: Brave Soldiers was announced for release in Mexico and Latin America last month, but Namco Bandai have confirmed that the fighting game will be released in North America as well.

The game will be available as a download-only title for the PlayStation 3, Namco Bandai confirmed to Siliconera at Comic-Con. Namco added they’re releasing the game in the U.S. to gauge how large the Saint Seiya fanbase is.

Saint Seiya: Brave Soldiers will be available this November.

  • Enma_Kozato

Aw yiss :y Now I just have to get Discotek’s release of the movies to show my Saint Seiya support.

  • Solomon_Kano

So… if the interest is there, do they go back and give us Sanctuary Battle or are we just on the list for future games? Really gotta wonder.

    • DemonShadowX

I imagine we’ll be on the list for upcoming games unless the game sells REALLY WELL. Now how about releasing Jojo and Kamen Rider to “gauge” the fan base….. Ie…. Me.

      • Solomon_Kano

JoJo would be lovely. Yea, let’s gauge that.

        • Pinwheel

God, they really need to gauge JoJo. The fanbase wants to support this series so badly over here but all we have is the manga. It really sucks.

If the game is only released in Europe and Japan, so be it. I don’t even mind just a PSN release with censored names. SOMETHING, ANYTHING over here would be appreciated.

          • GVmanX

The biggest issue with JoJo is that they would have to change character and stand names for some of the later parts, and Araki doesn’t want to do anything as extreme as remove all Prince references from Part 5.

          • Pinwheel

I’m aware of that. It’s still the only way we’ll get anything over here for JoJo. The more obscure ones like Crazy Diamond should be fine, but obviously Gold Experience and Aerosmith won’t be.

      • Should also be done with the SRW OG and Gundam fan base, haha :3

    • Ferrick

      its another sanctuary arc…

      • L Lawliet

        Sanctuary, Poseidon and Hades.

    • Sergio V Amaya

if we get it to sell well let’s hope it means we get good saint seiya stuff like Next Dimension or Lost Canvas…no Omega please D:

  • fairysun

    Nice !
Download version is fine with me.
I just want to be able to do Pegasus Ryu Sei Ken !! (blocked 100% by opponent)

  • Renaldi Saputra

and now still waiting about Digimon World Re:Digitize Decode’s localization announcement..

    go go #OperationDecode!!!

  • Tales_of_Master

How about releasing Tales of Hearts R in the US to gauge how much of the Tales fanbase own a VITA ? I’m just sayin’ :/

    • KyoyaHibari

I like the way you think sir.

    • fireguardiancoty

They’ve already said that the Vita is doing poorly and that’s why they aren’t bringing those over.

      • dragoon_slayer12

Yeah, but it’s games like those that need to be release in order to increase sale. The Vita is a great RPG device, and these would be a great addition. It’s a shame, cuz devs and pubs complain about the low install base, so they don’t make makes, but if they don’t make games, the install base can’t grow. Sony only has so many IP’s, they can’t build the install base by itself. It’s a vicious cycle that makes no sense….

Then again, Nintendo released 2 games (3D Land and Mario Kart) and a price cut and then POOF! Big install base for the 3DS. Sony need a really good game that caters to a lot of people (P4G is all kinds of amazing but sadly a lot of people dont buy JRPG)

          • dragoon_slayer12

nintendo is releasing titles that can appeal to almost everybody. like mario (of course since you own a 3ds), mario 3d land and NSMB2, like RPG’s, Paper Mario, Zelda, Tales of the Abyss, like fighters, Street Fighter, Dead or Alive, BlazBlu, like racing, Mario Kart, etc., etc. Sony took almost a year to build a strong library, and those were all far in between another, and then stopped altogether (till this fall, and i only know of 2 strong contenders). If Tales releases, it’ll be good, but then their needs to be a better support base coming from devs/pubs, and sony has to convince them to develop/publish/localize (like handing out dev kits). it just sucks for people that own a Vita (me included). last title i purchased was ragnarok odyssey (didn’t like Soul Sacrifice to warrant a $40 purchase), while i’ve been buying 1-2 3ds titles every month since feburary (caught paper mario late, then been buying everything day 1 minus Fire Emblem, which i just bought this week with SMTIV). Sony needs to do their part too. release twisted metal, God of War, whatever, they need to turn this around quick. i would hate for this to be another PSP/DS situation. i wasn’t too fond of the DS, and bought a total of (roughly) 15 games, while my psp garnered roughly 50, but those came far in between as well. i’ve already purchased 30+ 3ds titles and 10+ Vita, and thats not including digital exclusives (then its 25 vita, 85+ 3ds). in my eyes, it should be even numbers. it’s still early (has consoles/handhelds usually last 5-7 years), but damn what a slow start

edit: and yes, sony needs a price cut. a handheld device should never cost equal or more to a console, ESPECIALLY a 6 year old one. and with the PS4 at $400, its just ridiculous. i say its worth every penny (come on, near ps3 on the go), but for that, you can get a built in blu-ray player that plays 2/3 gens, has a library of 1,000+ (probably an underestimation), and can have multiple accounts, of any region at that. they need to cut it by $100(+), by the time Killzone and/or PS4 drops.

edit 2: and do something about that damn 3g model and plan. i’d pay $20 a month for unlimited with no caps, that way i can do whatever with no restrictions, not $15 for 3gb (or whatever it is). and replace 3g with 4g, LTE, Wimax, HSPA+, doesn’t matter, whatever has better coverage and is cheap enough to partner with (i say T-Mobile HSPA+), that should be gold, double that with unlimited for $20, and i think people can bite into it even more. i need to get into marketing….

oh, and nintendo should do a 4g 3DS Pro (all those extra buttons and stick from the CCP). think about it, Monster Hunter/Mario Kart/Super Smash Bros. online, all day, every day, anywhere (under coverage). I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

        • shadowind

It’s like the situation with the PSP in that it did obscenely well in Japan and to a lesser degree in Europe because a lot of good games came out exclusively in those regions, especially in Europe such as the Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood game whereas SCEA seems to hate Japanese games with a passion especially where PS3 games are concerned, voice-wise (with the exception of the Yakuza games)

          • dragoon_slayer12

yeah, like Breath of Fire 3 releasing in EU but not US. i doubt they had to put any more effort into the game itself to release it abroad.

    • While I wasn’t keen from what I’ve seen and played of the “R”-vita titles, I’d imagine the Tales series a better way to “gauge” the fanbase than Saint Seiya…. or I’m just not actively seeking out SS stuff to really notice its popularity in NA.

    • Bobby Jennings

Well the game barely sold in Japan, so it’s definitely not going to sell well here. Regardless, I’d like it english too.

  • DivinePhoenix69

Never really got into the Saint Seiya series but im definately willing to check this out.

  • KyoyaHibari

I think this might be fun, I’m hoping this ends up more smoothly than Storm and .hack Versus in terms of CC2’s brawlers, but I will definitely support this game nonetheless, the Saint Seiya characters are cool.

  • Nameless App 1989

    How about localizing Vesperia PS3???

    • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Unfortunately it is much too late for that, maybe a Vesperia HD PS4 someday.

      • Vesperia HD……

      • Pyrotek85

That’s been my guess. Eventually they’ll release it again on some future system and probably base if off the PS3 version, like how they’re basing the Symphonia HD release on the more complete PS2 version.

What would be better IMO is if we could get titles that we haven’t had localized at all, like on the Vita.

    • fireguardiancoty

Leave it alone. Namco Bandai have already said no numerous times. We’re getting Xillia this year and Symphonia Unisonant and Xillia 2 next year. We’re finally moving forward in the series.

If you want it so bad then import it. There are plenty of guides out there to help you understand it.

It’s never coming back over. So drop it.

      • Aw, be nice. To be fair the whole ordeal around that was nothing but shoddy and messy. Like being teased by a girl/guy who never had feelings for you at all (weird metaphor).

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Of all the months November? They could wait until next year when people have managed to not have spent all their funds on the fabulous games releasing this year.

Unfortunately, I just know the gold and bronze saints in Omega, and Seiya, so I hope they are in it, may get if engDubbed.

    • fireguardiancoty

If it’s only digital it’s not gonna be dubbed. One Piece was like that…

      • Zendervai

It’ll probably have a dub. It is getting a full release in Europe after all.

        • Lynx

All the recent SS games in Europe haven’t had dubs, dude. I’ve got the majority (except Sanctuary Battle) and they aren’t dubbed.

    • DS23

Is there that much overlap between SS and CoD fans?

      • XYZ_JolteonZ980

well novemeber has the big current gen games as well as new console debuts, will people really have that much money to contribute to continuing sequels, a new console, and then a psn animu exclusive, Naruto Shippuden Storm 3 is also in november as well…

  • Judgephoenix

What happened to the Gundam Fan base as well? There are like what 3-5 games behind not sure. On topic I love the Saint Seiya series but i’m so far behind on reading manga and watching the anime so much content lol. Also Revive the .hack series!

    • Gundam Breaker to the west!

      • D H

I’d take Gundam Breaker and Battle Operation. It may be a little clunky, but I’ve loved the hell out of BO since it launched; although, I have slacked a little bit in playing it since early this year, the last time I was really active was back in January/February, when the Blue Destiny 2/3 event ended… missed my shot at NT-1 and Kämpfer this time, but they’ll be back…

      • Kaihedgie

How about Gundam Extreme Vs? Major budget title and the theme song is by Linkin Park of all people.

      • Bigabu Beaze

        Gundam Breaker!!!

  • Minos

Just upload it at the PSN.

    What is the big deal?

    • Because fans will complain, like they complain about everything unless releases suit 100% of their needs.

  • Just Tim

I’ll end up pissed off if those fratgamers at X-Play (a Comcast-funded show; yes, people, Comcast owns G4) dismisses St. Seiya: Brave Soldiers as ‘pretty boy version of Sailor Moon’, despite the FACT that St. Seiya is an 80’s anime, while Sailor Moon 1st aired in Japan in the 1990s!

    • Rune

Eh? X-play hasn’t been around for over a year now (G4 cancelled it along with Attack of the Show), which G4/Esquire being nothing but a shell of what it was (now purely syndicated/reruns of Cops and Ninja Warrior.)

      • Just Tim

Thanks for the update. Honestly, it’s really hard to live down X-Play’s non-FPS ignorance.

+1 WINadelphia pt. for Comcast. :P

    • D H

I was under the impression X-Play ended a while ago? And that G4 doesn’t really exist nowadays, wasn’t it s’posed to turn into “Esquire” awhile back? Also, that comment would still make sense; nowhere in your fake statement does it say “based on,” it’s simply taking a more established property and saying it’s “like this.”

  • Jesse

Ok, U.S. Saint Seiya fans, you know what to do.

  • Wait, what about Super Robot Wars OG or Gundam? Heck, there is a group called Operation Hotblood fighting for OG games (Namco Bandai owns SRW basically).
Good news for the SS fans, of course, but still a bummer to the SRW OG and Gundam supporters.

    • Brandonmkii

Hey, at least SRW and gundam fans have had games released in English before. Saint Seiya fans have gotten ZERO until now, in North America anyway.

      • That’s not true, Battle Sanctuary got released some time ago in Europe and such. You could still import it. It’s been years since we had Gundam – hell, we never got a SRW OG game from Namco Bandai itself (only by the hands of Atlus USA who advertised it poorly).

  • I wish I knew/liked the series to show my support….or I wish I was good at fighters.

  • Yan Zhao

As a US-based Saint Seiya fan, this is great news for me. But sadly I fear the game wont be selling that well here. The US got Saint Seiya WAY too late, and the dubs were so bad it destroyed many potential new fans.

  • Hinataharem

    Yeah gauge the fanbase!

    All 12 of them!

    • I… see what you did there…?

    • If you mean that there aren’t a lot of Saint Seiya fans….then I kinda agree, I didn’t know there were that many.

    • L Lawliet

Your info is outdated. Saint Seiya is actually becoming popular in North America, mainly because of the new Series (Omega and Lost Canvas).

      • Hinataharem

Wow. It was a joke. I didn’t mean any harm. Nor was I serious. Exaggeration of course.

        I apologize

        • L Lawliet

I didn’t took it as an offense though…XP

    • shadowind

That’s a bit damn harsh! A couple of good friends of mine who are married to each other are huge friends of mine and I’ll definitely be telling them about it. In fact, it was their shared love of Saint Seiya that brought them together! ^_^

  • doubleO7

Hopefully if it does well, they’ll give us Sanctuary Battle as well.

  • kroufonz

some of the hardcore anime fans ten to hate a download only title and would rather import.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

There’s definitely more Saint Seiya fans than JoJo fans (just as a comparison of why it was probably a better choice to bring that game here) in the US. A lot of people from Latin America are fans of this series? Well from what I know there are many of those Latin Americans in the US, NBGI just needs to be able to get their attention by advertising it correctly…

    • L Lawliet

      That’s right, sir.

  • ryougazell

Finally a website posts this news as “The US” and not “North America” conveniently ignoring Mexico is part of North America.
    Thank you Siliconera :)

  • Guest

I kind of hope they change the subtitle from Brave Soldiers to Knights of the Zodiac. Might only get them a handful more sales, but every one counts.

  • Raphael Rodriguez

What do I have to do to get Bandai Namco to Release Super Robot Wars original generations 2 for the ps3? D:

    • Slayven19

Help pay the fee’s for the many companies that own the majority of the series.

      • Raphael Rodriguez

But it’s original generations, the one without the licenses problem lol

  • Arcm

This is cool news but I already ordered the PAL version since it comes with a disc.

  • Bobby Jennings

This is nice. and a very good idea.

  • Jesse Torres

F*ck yeah, I will show you I am a fan of SAINT SEIYA!!!!!!!! BURN YOUR COSMOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    They will not be disappointed

  • Slayven19

Well I was going to import this anyway but this is a surprise I admit. The only reason they are giving it to us I’m sure is because EU is handling all the translation already so its not much to put it up on psn. Still I’m liking this new namco were as they could have just left it as an EU release they decided to take a chance.

  • Wykydtron

Sorry Namco. No physical copy? No sale.

  • Vash bane

    oh my god O_O………..

I think I finally get what a fangasm is right now

  • Tiredman

I hate it when companies gauge interest with digital only releases that are likely to be $30+. I don’t buy digital titles over $20, so I hope it comes in at that price but highly doubt it.

  • School Idol Addict

If they really wanted to gauge the fanbase they would also release physical copies.
You can’t gauge the entire fanbase with only digital like you wouldn’t be able to gauge the entire fanbase with only physical.

    • Rafael Martines

But digital release is easier access than physical

  • vileBrenman

    I’m so on this!

  • Jessi Aldana

  • KyoyaHibari

I will support this along with Movies 3 & 4 (I only want Legend of Crimson Youth because I hear it is exemplary) and with maybe the new DVD sets for the series, while hopefully the Hades arc is released after.
