Soulcalibur 2 HD Online Coming To Xbox 360 And PS3

By Ishaan . July 19, 2013 . 4:25pm

Soulcalibur 2 is coming to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as an HD Remaster. Titled Soulcalibur 2 HD Online, the game is slated for release this fall on Xbox Live and PSN.

During Namco Bandai’s panel at Comic-Con, where they announced the game, Namco also showed that Heihachi from Tekken will be in the game.

Originally, Heihachi was only in the PlayStation 2 version of SoulCalibur 2, while the Gamecube got Link from The Legend of Zelda and the Xbox got Todd McFarlane’s Spawn.

    I haven’t played SC2 in ages.

  • Dynami

Pretty sick. Overrated from a competitive standpoint, but quite fun in any situation. Looking forward to it. Glad they didn’t skimp on the online like the port of Soul Calibur.

    • Slayven19

Its not overrated from a competitive standpoint, but I’d actually like to hear why you think that is other than because if its popular by lots of people it must be overrated.

      • Dynami

When a game becomes more limited and less fun as you understand advanced tactics, it is not a game I’d consider playing competitively. Step-Guard/broken tracking moves and the composition of various movesets ensured that this was the case for SCII, imo.

I mean no insult to the people that enjoy it, mind you. I respect people that play ANY game, regardless of my own opinion on it. However, a TREMENDOUS portion of players think that SCII is an incredibly balanced/fine-tuned game when that simply isn’t the case from an objective standpoint.

Perhaps instead of saying “overrated”, I should’ve said that the game’s nature is “largely misconstrued”. Because a broken ass game can still be competitive, as long as people do enjoy the competition (all my love goes out to them marvel players).

  • DemonShadowX

While I no there’s probably no chance of it happening…. Please have Link, I was boss with him once upon a time.

  • Godmars

Why not use the SC5 engine to recreate SC2?

Not that this doesn’t sound odd enough on those very grounds.

No really. This makes no sense to me.

    • Brion Valkerion

Because it wont be SC2, when you change the engine even graphics wise like you mean, you change the fundamental game under it.

    • Slayven19

Your post makes no sense to me, it wouldn’t be soul calibur 2 if they did that.

      • Godmars

And not seeing the need to republish with new textures over the older blocky graphics when there are at least three later iterations of the game.

To a degree its like Namco saying they forgot how to make the game after SC2. Failed to improve upon the series.

        • Ni

SC3 was really good imo (not as awesome as 2 but was good). SC4 that started getting things wrong and in SC5…well…let’s just pretend that SC5 never existed

  • KingGunblader

YES, I will so take this over SC5, even if there is no Link… which there won’t be. *cries*

  • Ni

    DAY ONE!
My favourite SC game. I still play SC2 once in a while.
Ivy! Wake up! Time kick butts! :3

I played the PS2 version alot and a little of the XBox version because of Spawn on a friend’s house.Back in the day I heard that people on the GC only played because Link was in the game

    • AkuLord3

That and cuz it was great game

  • flower234

SoulCalibur 3 is my favorite. But this is good too :D

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      You should play SoCal1

  • AkuLord3

I’m sadden that there isn’t going be a Wii U version…which means no Link action (grew up with the GC version) oh well even then still pretty awesome

    • malek86

Sometimes I think the only reason people remember this game is because of Link. It’s kinda too bad, since the game itself was quite good while Link was pretty much broken. Then again, it did help selling. I have a feeling that 95% of the GC version’s sales came from SSBM owners.

      • AkuLord3

Not really since it had other ports…really i don’t see why you think its a bad thing. Sure some people got the game for Link and then become fans of the series liking other characters besides i think people knew more of Link from…idk Legend of Zelda than SSBM (especially since its not like they would play the same)

        • malek86

I also got it because of Link, and I assume that many others did, or the GC version wouldn’t have ended up being the highest-selling one (and a multiplatform game selling more on GC than on PS2 was pretty much unheard of). Maybe I’m just bitter because Link in the game was horribly unbalanced (so disappointing) but everyone seemed to want to play as him regardless, which made matches not nearly as fun.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Leave a message…Please, everyone mained Ivy and Kilik

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Too bad every SoCal after II is meh

      • I don’t find that a bad thing. It’s like how adding Star Wars helped and such, it was to attract people to the game and lots of these actually converted in tru fans of the series (like me).

  • Chaos_Knight

Why no Wii U version? Link was in the GCN version. :(

    • developers dont develop for wii u because the sales arent good enough for them, yet. :( it is truly unfortunate.

      • Chaos_Knight

Sales would go up if developers would actually DEVELOP GAMES FOR THE WII U. But, oh well. Indeed, truly unfortunate. :(

        • i feel the same way. i dont think the wii u is as risky as they are making it out to be.

          • Quacker

if games like mass effect 3 cant even break 100k total then no one will ever develop for it

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Mass Effect has no appeal on the WiiU, need the whole trilogy

          • You’re making Mass Effect 3 sounds like a BIG deal. They should release more exclusives, I mean, most people nowadayas own two or more consoles, if they release it for, let’s say PS3 and Wii U, of course people would get the PS3 version instead since it has better online community and image definition.

          • Spirit Macardi

Problem one with that line of logic is that Mass Effect 3 had already been out for PS3, 360, and PC for months before it hit Wii U. Everyone who wanted the game by that point had most likely already bought it, beaten it, and complained about the ending online.

Also, ports don’t sell consoles, exclusives do. Without content unique to a single console, there’s no reason to pick one system over another. It’s why sales of Nintendo consoles pick up when the likes of Mario and Legend of Zelda show up, because there’s no other platform to play those on.

      • Suicunesol

Not even. It’s an HD release of an old game so there’s not much development to be had. The only acceptable reason they wouldn’t release it for Wii U is because of unfamiliar online infrastructure, or something. It’s clear developers don’t even want it to succeed. (“This town isn’t big enough for the three of us!”) They might give an excuse like “If we release a game on that system, we’d have to do additional work for the touchscreen.”

        • you would think so, right? they just keep pumping out the same lame excuses as they starve out the wii u for 3rd party content.

      • Spirit Macardi

Maybe the sales of the console would be better if Namco’s “contributions” to it weren’t complete crap like Tank Tank Tank.

        • HA! such a good point. im hoping their contributions to smash bros will make up for it.

          • Carlos Luis Ayala

The same reason they won’t localize the Vita games they made

          • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

            looking at DS early dominate
it had Tales of Hearts and Innocence with large install base. But didn’t localize.

They need make Baba change his role because he flips flops on every new interview or quote he has and make.

          • Adrián Alucard

Don’t forget Tales of the Tempest

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Yeah, I had to import those to play on my 3DS

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

SolCal II’s best version is still GameCube version

          • Spirit Macardi

This isn’t even something new for them. I remember during the original Wii’s time Namco said they’d stopped developing for it since there were too many bad games on the console. This, of course, coming from the same company that made We Cheer.

  • malek86

HD Remaster is an interesting name for this, since Soul Calibur 2 technically already had 720p on the Xbox, although only in pillarbox.

    • ギャビン

I was just going to say the same thing lol. Still looks damn good too.

  • Spirit Macardi

I guess Namco forgot that the Gamecube version was not only the best selling of the SC2 ports, but also of the entire damn series.

    • Muffum

Probably didn’t want to bother with renegotiating rights. Heihachi is hassle-free, since he’s already owned by Namco.

      • Slayven19

Spawn is on the xbox version though.

        • RisukuAozora

Dude, Spawn’s another character that’d need renegotiation. It’s easier and cheaper just for both 360 and PS3 to have Heihachi.

  • Suicunesol

Ahh… Soul Calibur 2. Found this one in an arcade over ten years ago… Had twenty dollars to spend in Las Vegas for a couple hours of arcade time while the grown ups went to the slots. Big screen. Amazing graphics. Xianghua with bouncing boobs. And fun, easy-to-pick-up gameplay that involved fighting with weapons rather than hand-to-hand like every other fighting game out there. Ended up spending less than 5 dollars for over an hour of play. Aside from Smash Brothers, was the only fighting game I was really excited to play in those years.

  • protofox

  • This should’ve come out for the Wii U too, I mean, the game was originally for the GCN too and there isn’t much work to do since it”s just a port.

    • Slayven19

Tell that to capcom with the Dungeon and Dragons digital download that’s still not in the nintendo store. Face it the WiiU just has some complications with porting games when trying to make the online function work.

Don’t know what the thumbs down was for when its factual that the wiiU online isn’t easy to work with especially with porting games.

      • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

porting games on Wii U is very esy. Clearly you are not up to date

      • ssj3gokou24

For your information, the d&d port had a bug in it. It crashed numerous ps3s’. Capcom cared about a quick buck and sent it out. Nintendo found the game breaking glitch and refused to release it until it was fixed. It’ll be released in aug. The bug was found in online multiplayer…….*drops mic*

        • M’iau M’iaut

@slayven19:disqus Please don’t provide such statements of ‘facts’ without providing anything in support. Thanks.

          • ssj3gokou24

Fact:google is a search engine. Use it.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Not the duty of our posters and readers to do so in such situations.

          • Never

            You’re right.

        • How about giving some proof?

    • M’iau M’iaut

Sadly, the comments below are why we hold to the no requests rules. All it does is open the door for such tripe.

  • I got pretty serious with this game, wouldn’t say my Taki was pro but she was pretty good

  • Guest

I love this game. Disappointing that Link won’t be included in this remaster… :-(

  • TheCrimsonSpeed

As is the echoed opinion it seems, it’s really a shame there won’t be a Wii U version with Link. I’m one of the many, many people who bought Soul Calibur 2 on the GameCube specifically because of him (prior to the purchase I didn’t even know anything about SC), and since that game I’ve been a fan of the series as a whole. Not a huge deal, since with or without him it’s still an amazing game, but it kind of loses some nostalgia points for me without him. *shrugs* =/

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Great memories with this game! My cousin had the Xbox version so I only got yo play as Spawn. I would’ve liked SC1 HD on PS3 as well, but I do own a 360.
I just loved going through older games’ arcade mode for a character’s ending… even though SC2 had pictures it seemed more satisfying than most fighters that have still picture frames for endings.

  • Ixbran

heres hoping for a WiiU version that will include Link.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

  • ssj3gokou24

No link, no buy. Plain and simple.

  • I’ll be kicking so many bums. Every time I approached a friend and asked about Soul Calibur, they said “I play 2!” Well, here is 2.
    I’m happy about this >:D

  • notforsale

Oh dam, so THIS is what nostalgia feels like!

  • 愛憎

I’ll miss you, Link and Spawn.

  • David García Abril

    Oh, come on, Namco!

If you include Link, I’m sure you can get a profit out of a Wii U version, even with such a small console base!

  • kazdamaz

Make it SC3 and I’m sold!

  • fayt255

I’m glad to see SC2 return and Xianghua and all the characters that was left out of SC5. Sorry SC5 you dropped my main.

  • artemisthemp

So there is no Offline mode in this game?

  • So i guess this is the “Sorry for SC 5 , here take this one instead”. One of the best entries of the series *-*

  • disqus_VYqqwQ8BRH

Why not a collection Soul Calibur 1 2 & 3 and bring back the memories of its Arcade Origins

    • DS23

      Cause :effort:
