Atelier 2014 May Be Brand New, Dusk Series Won’t End With Escha & Logy

This week’s Dengeki PlayStaton magazine featured an interview with Gust’s director Yoshito Okamura, who hinted that they’ll be releasing a new Atelier game, that may not be related to the Dusk series. In addition, he also says that the Dusk series will continue and won’t end with Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky.

Previously, Okamura mentioned that there won’t be a plus version of Atelier Rorona. The other two games in the Arland trilogy got expanded ports for PlayStation Vita and were released as, Atelier Totori Plus and Atelier Meruru Plus. Okamura said that they’d like to make an expansion for it in the future that will show the reason why they saved it for last. According to the Dengeki PlayStation interview, we may be seeing a remake for Atelier Rorona before we see a completely new Atelier series.

“Since becoming part of Tecmo Koei, we now have the grounds to make big titles, while keeping true to Gust’s identity.” says Okamura in the interview. The director also reveals his intention to step down from the development of the Atelier series, with the reason being that when the same person continues developing a title, the game’s content will always be too similar to one another.

Here are some highlights from the interview:

  • There are no plans to end the Dusk series anytime soon, as there are still plenty left to do.

  • Gust’s next title may not be part of the Dusk series, although it’s not certain.

  • There will be a new Atelier game released next year, as they have no intention to break the pattern of releasing a new title per year so fans will have something to look forward to every year.

  • Since merging with Tecmo Koei, Gust now have the grounds to develop bigger titles and still keep true to their essence.

  • Gust are currently training their young developers so they can carry on with the future of the Atelier series, along with new IPs, all while changing the future of the company from within.

  • Director Yoshito Okamura feels that someone else must be entrusted with Atelier. Not because he dislikes making it, but because he feels that if the same person keeps working on it, the games will always be too similar.

  • This year is Gust’s 20th anniversary, as they’re looking forward to taking on greater challenges.

want to see another atelier game set in the dusk world. Hope next years release continues the series.

  • Sato

Doh! There seems to be some sort of error in the uploading for the post… I apologize about the inconvenience, but we’ll have it fixed asap!

    • r0gamer940

so that means there is a higher chance of a dusk sequel?

      • Sato

There will definitely be another Dusk game, but next year’s title is looking like it’ll be something else; most likely to do with Atelier Rorona!

        • r0gamer940

good due to randomness I have bought the collectors edition for both ayesha and eschatology

  • Jezzy

Hope to see a new Ar tonelico or Mana Khemia game somewhere down the line as well.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jefriputra Jeff

They should make the prequel of ar tonelico, when the tower first built, and jacqli is a must XD

      • aquagon

First, the creation of the First Tower and Mir’s birth are separated by around 500 years, so that wouldn’t be possible. And second, if you want just to see how everything goes to hell, be my guest, but don’t expect even a bittersweet ending with the events that happened prior to any of the games.

        • Kai2591

woah, I wouldn’t want that, haha.

    • http://www.carpefulgur.com SpaceDrake

Ar Tonelico will likely never see a remake or re-release because the IP is now owned in part by Namco-Bandai after their acquisition of Banpresto. It’s sort of a crazy situation because all three games did fairly well in Japan and, localization problems aside, AT2 gets a lot of critical respect on both sides of the ocean, but that’s how it is.

      • aquagon

Although that doesn’t stop Gust from releasing new material for it as long as they aren’t games, correct?
Otherwise, I don’t see how they could have released Kurt Hymneth back in February without jumping through these legal hurdles.

        • http://www.carpefulgur.com SpaceDrake

I THINK the music is Gust’s, since it’s 100% a Gust Sound Team joint. And they may well have paid some royalties to use the character images and whatnot! I just know that the overall IP, and thus the games, suffers split ownership at this point and that makes re-releases problematic.

We could well see more music releases, though. I dunno about other material because I don’t have explicit details on who owns what part of the franchise or how much.

          • aquagon

Hmm, okay. I guess that split ownership is only the cause of headaches when one of the creators is absorbed or bought out by a rival company.

And well, I just pointed this out due to said compilation not only including character arts and music, but also including a couple of books: one that apparently chronicles the plots and character arcs from the three games, and other one that adds a trio of new stories.

    • chibidw

I’d just be happy if they did away with the calendar system.

  • http://www.carpefulgur.com SpaceDrake

Yeah, Rorona getting a more comprehensive remake is no big surprise. It’s REALLY primitive compared to even the other Arland titles, never mind the Twilight titles. I’d be a little surprised if they remake Rorona quite this soon, though, since the game will only be five years old next year.

I also wonder what plans, if any, they have to commemorate Gust’s 20th. I guess Escha & Logy do so?

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Oh sweet jesus this could be Mana Khemia 3!
Also once you play Escha & Logy, its obvious it wont be the end of the series. I’m almost done with Logy’s route and it really doesn’t feel like anything extremely major is happening that could end the Dusk series right there, but it does feel like it is part of a much larger story.

Looking at the sales, Atelier is having a franchise fatigue. Here’s hoping returns of Mana Khemia.

    • Slayven19

That wouldn’t increase sales at all in japan making a MK game. The atelier game they just released was somewhat like an MK game and sadly it didn’t do all that well. Hopefully it’ll pull better numbers in the west some kind of way.

“Gust are currently training their young developers so they can carry on with the future of the Atelier series, along with new IPs, all while changing the future of the company from within.”
This sounds promising. Keep the traditions going with Atelier, but be sure to make it still fresh and fun. Atelier might end up becoming my favorite series unless Tales of Xillia wows the pants off of me.

  • Erikdayo

Looking forward to whatever they make as long as it makes it to the West with Japanese audio in tact. :)

    • Erikdayo

Thanks for the down votes. I don’t care if you’re a dub fan. The English voice actors just don’t pull off the cute anywhere near as well as the original Japanese voice actors. Considering the Atelier games are full of very cutesy women the dubs can be pretty grating. :/

      • Hikari Langley

Don’t pull off the cute? I guess you haven’t heard Tanya’s lovely voice, she does the cute the right way.

  • Josephl64

Atelier Warriors confirmed? *I wish* I would love to see a new Ar Tonelico, but due to legal reasons that’s even less of a possibility. It probably is just another main line game

  • fyi1191

Won’t end with Escha & Logy? That means hurrah for more Linca. She will be probably be as badass as Sterk in the next game.

    • Slayven19

I’m always up for more linca.

  • TheExile285

So we actually are gonna get a remake of Rorona?

    works for me!

  • Sim

uh this article was hard to read.. since the same things repeated themselfs im sorry if this is rude :(

    • Niyari

i was actually about to post the same thing. it’s not rude at all to bring it to the attention of the article creator

      • ChiffonCake

He’s actually already aware of this. You can see his comment about it below.

  • Spectacularity

    I’ll miss him. ;~;

  • サレム

I seriously hope they don’t bother remaking a game that’s 5 years old. I mean Totori and Meruru plus are ports with some extra content for quick cash, but if they are remaking something it should be the Salburg or Gramnad games, not a title where one can still remember a lot of the dialogue.

    • pekikuubik

The Gramnad games were already ported to the PSP a couple of years ago.

    • puchinri

I would really like to see those titles updated again. . . that’d be really cool, and to do a Salburg remake would be great for their anniversary.

  • solbalmung

Crossing my fingers for a Mana Khemia 3 (even thought I know the series didn’t do so well in Japan).
Still waiting for a localization announcement of Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky QQ

    • Zen Grenadier

I’m hoping for the return of a more combat focused atelier game. Mana Khemia and Ar Tonelico 2 was delicious cake when it came to their battle systems with the item creation and customization as icing.

      • aquagon

Considering how badly the previous combat-focused games sold, I wouldn’t bet on it. Escha and Logy sold pretty decently, but unfortunately it didn’t quite reach the level that Totori and Meruru did on Japan.

      • Kai2591

I’m hoping for a game similar to Ar Tonelico; deep lore, unique sci-fi fantasy, dive system, date-sim elements, character interactions, but with improved battle system :)

        • aquagon

If Surge Concerto has a RPG as its next iteration, that would help a lot to fill the void Ar tonelico left, considering how both are grounded on the same base setting and concepts. However, we would have to wait until Ciel Nosurge ends first… as this July 31th we get to the halfway point of the story (8 chapters of 16).

          • Kai2591

ah yes I remember Gust saying the next game in the Surge Concerto universe might take a different form; hopefully RPG. and yeah, not to mention the similarities between Ar Tonelico and Surge Concerto.

oh so Ciel No Surge is only halfway through huh? I see…good to know, thanks for the info :)

  • Nitraion

Hmm if their policy to release a game every year, maybe they should change pace with their other title like mana khemia or ar tonelico using repeat cyle
    its like this:
Atelier game —>Mana khemia —> ar tonelico —> atelier game/ new title if they have idea…
That way people not gonna be bored and actually looking forward to next title…. careful not to catch COD or sports game symptoms games Gust…

    • pekikuubik

Mana Khemia is part of the Atelier series.

      • Nitraion

I know but they always feel more school setting based to me…
and i feel its kinda different series to me or spin off if you insist, you know like Persona in SMT series

    • Pekola

Ar Tonelico ended with Qoga, I think.

  • Yan Zhao

Training their developers so they can carry the future of their franchise? I wish more game companies would treat their employees like this.

  • SpecDotSign

I want some next gen Atelier action Gust. Get to it!

  • TWE

A Rorona remake without the derpy models, bizarre clipping, and random crashes? Count me in.

Seems TK is emphasizing that they aren’t restricting Gust even with the acquisition. Really nice that they are developing their in-house staff to eventually hand the projects over to. They don’t seem to be as hush or tight-fisted as other developers.

I’d love to see some other old IPs pop up, like Mana Kheima though I am more looking forward to the new IP they have in store.

    • Demeanor

The first Mana Khemia was a blast, out-of-this-world music and such satisfying mana battles… the endgame abilities were plain unfair to enemies XD Anna and Roxis were my favourite!!!

    • aquagon

Mana Khemia is still part of the main Atelier games. It’s Project A9 and A10, instead of an independent development line as Ar tonelico was.

  • Demeanor

I love this series, it’s a work of art, looking forward to see more installments and yes, I want them on PS4 too!!! ^ ^ A Rorona remake would be cool, especially if they make some drastic changes not only to graphics, but say, the battle system as well. Mmm thinking about it, the simpler mechanics and general peacefulness of Rorona no Atelier could prove quite a challenge to overcome when designing a remake, how to keep players hooked?

  • Warboss Aohd

i would like a game in da Vein of Atelier Iris.

those were da best, also Mana Khemia.

  • http://superkurisutina.tumblr.com/ Kurisu Makise

Okamura is a smart man, evolution requires change; besides I’m sure he wants to do something new too. So, new console Atelier and Rorona Remake, hmm seeing the picture of Rorona depresses me since she’s a kid after her first game =(

  • puchinri

Okamura kind of reminds me of Miyamoto, and I appreciate what both of them feel and have to say. I’m curious about the future of Atelier and look forward to how things will go.

I’m kind of hoping the new game will be a new, portable title, but I suppose something related to an older title (Rorona probably) makes more sense.

  • Kai2591

May Gust have a glorious future!

  • artemisthemp

Sound like Atelier Rorona Plus will happen :)
