Batman: Arkham Origins Has Multiplayer, But Not On Wii U

By Ishaan . July 31, 2013 . 9:30am

Batman: Arkham Origins will have a multiplayer mode, Warner Bros. have revealed. The multiplayer mode will be developed by Splash Damage and focuses on third-person shooter mechanics. You’ll get to play as Batman or Robin and hunt down opponents.

You’ll also be able to play as thugs on the side of villains such as Joker and Bane, and attempt to take Batman and Robin down. Joker and Bane themselves will be playable in some fashion as well.

The catch is that the new multiplayer mode is coming to the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Batman: Arkham Origins, but not the Wii U version.

Batman: Arkham Origins will launch worldwide on October 25th.

Dammit I pre-ordered this on the Wii U so I could play this at night in my bed. Now I have to cancel and pre-order the PS3 version, what a bummer.

  • John Diamond

    as i’ve said before:
    creates half assed port
    surprised when sales are low

  • AuraGuyChris

It’s like Warner Bros. doesn’t want to support a Japanese console. Where was that love with Scribblenauts?

    • British_Otaku

I’m not sure whether Europe got Scribblenauts Unlimited yet or not…

Eitherway, I remember Warner Bros promising to support the Wii U well… See

I won’t go as far to say their support isn’t appreciated anymore, but I would like the DLC to be openly announced even if released late for whatever reason and the content to match weaker consoles.

      • Farid Belkacemi

        We’re still waiting for Unlimited…

    • Domii

Huh? They constantly support Sony consoles to the extent that they even offer exclusive content on PS3 versions of their games. Remember the first Arkham game and the Joker missions?

      • AuraGuyChris

        Never mind.
        Let me rephrase it.
They secretly want the Wii U to fail.

  • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

    Sounds boring and shoehorned

    • J_Joestar

to be fair, most multiplayer in single-player centric games are.

  • god, i am so tired of this wii u discrimination! even developers who DO develop for it are trying to set the system up to fail…PS3 it is, i guess…

  • multiplayer sounds generic and boring but way to alienate nintendo fans, i hope they make up for it with extra singleplayer modes. Am sure looking forward to the trolling this will create on gamefaqs though =p

  • Spirit Macardi

Remember when developers would give Nintendo half-assed ports and then claim it was because their home console wasn’t HD?

… Yeah, what the hell is their excuse now?

    • KnifeAndFork

      Not super HD

      • Herok♞

But it is more powerful then both PS3 and Xbox

        • Spider-Man

Being slightly more powerful than 7 year old consoles isn’t much to brag about though.

          • garf02

being as powerful as PC 7 years ago either, yet, see at Sony

    • almostautumn

Because 3rd party recieves zero support from Nintendo, unlike with Sony and MS who actively pursue showing off their games. They don’t need an “excuse;” it’s been this way for years and looks like it’ll stay this way to come

      • Spirit Macardi

Except Nintendo DOES actively pursue third-party support. It’s not their fault that most third parties, in turn, offer complete crap that gets its ass handed to it in the sales department by Mario and Link.

Also, they’ve never claimed it was because of what you just said. They always said it was because Nintendo didn’t join the HD bandwagon. So basically they’ve just been caught in a bold-faced lie.

        • Forty

To be honest, the Wii U IS in the same position as the Wii was. HD isn’t some magical catch all that means development for the Wii U and everything else that uses HD is the same.

Developers and third parties have already gotten into the stride of PS4 and Xbox One development now, and their resources – their dev tools, engines, etc. – aren’t geared for the PS3/360/Wii U power range anymore, and the Wii U has the same problem the Wii did, being a power range behind.

You also need to consider that Nintendo isn’t nearly as supportive to third parties as Sony and Microsoft are. Certainly, they’ve improved compared to how they used to be, but their platform is still incredibly alienating with its proprietary control design and audience that is very unreceptive to third parties.

      • Thatguy

Yeah, Capcom and Nintendo with MH! Oh, wait…

        • Dhruv Rajyagor

The only Nintendo-exclusive Monster Hunter game I know of is Monster Hunter 4, unless I’m not mistaken.

          • Katboy

its probably going to stay exclusive since its for the 3DS…

          • Dhruv Rajyagor

Knowing Capcom, they’ll probably port it later on, like they did with Resident Evil: Revelations.

        • eilegz

and that its more capcom laziness because they rather keep reusing ps2 era assets than doing HD stuff and nintendo giving them money its not bad neither….

      • J_Joestar

Yeah! *goes to look at the eshop to spend the $30 promotional bonus for buying a certain combination of 1st and 3rd party games*

    • darryl scott

developers are too scared to develop for wii u. they think its so called risky. but oh well… but look out for a game comming soon next year called
      Embrace Heaven: Nite/Lite
its a hack and slash multiplayer game comming for wii u.
how do i know? you may ask?
its because me and some buddies of mines are indie developers.

    • garf02

they just want to make a scapegoat to justify low sales as an excuse to no make more WiiU ports

  • British_Otaku

The multiplayer looked REALLY average till the idea of Batman and Robin going around wrecking shit came up. I see “some” potential, even if I’m convinced the single player will be the core project and bitter about the Wii U being left out.

I remember MGS4 had a multiplayer mode where one player was Solid Snake with Octocamo on top of the two warring teams. I suppose this is akin to that super asymmetrical gameplay idea.

A separate team developing multiplayer for games of this scale (fighters at least operate on the same rules with slightly adjusted stats/attributes) probably shouldn’t surprise me… However, Aliens Colonial Marines (bad all round but yep).

    • KnifeAndFork

      Sounds like Dark Sector

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

What?! why? oh nvm the multiplayer sound souless anyway,,,,they should have focus more on story* I hate when they add online to games that doesn’t need it*

    • Solomon_Kano

Except they ARE focusing on the story. The MP is being done by a completely different team, so that made NO sense.

  • KnifeAndFork

But only Batman’s father, Thomas Wayne, in an alternate universe as Batman, where his son Bruce was the one that died as a kid and not him (that the Flash created by breaking the time barrier to save his mom), uses a gun…

    • Mr_SP

But Batman and Robin weren’t using any guns in that clip.

  • Herok♞

I want to get stuff for Wiiu so I don’t care that there is no mutiplayer as long as they make use of the game pad

  • ehh I won’t miss it the other two were single player and sold very well and now that this one has multiplayer it won’t affect me enjoying the game. I hardly play most games for their multiplayer unless its interesting. I liked CoD for sometime but I got tired of it in the end but still go back to it from time to time though.

  • gamefreak86

So the system that guarantees mics for best teamplay and similar online structure to current gen if not better gets bell and whistles removed. These things only push me to wait for bargain bin price since its also launching at full price.

  • KaiYamato

Yes because we’re not allowed to have free online multiplayer anymore.

  • Dhruv Rajyagor

Regardless of if people think the multiplayer sounds generic, multiplayer is still pretty cool in itself. That being taken out of the Wii U version is the reason I have to buy the PS3 version instead. If they put it on Wii U, I’d get the Wii U version.

Then again, on the plus side, I get to play as Adam West Batman xD

  • Sergio Briceño

Guys. The PS3 also struggled with exlusive content in it’s first few years. Wait 1 year and see how multiplatform games will have equal if not better deals on Wii U, because Sony and MS will be busy with their next generation of consoles.

Now about the trailer: Not really impressed. I will give it a shot, the idea of playing as 2 members of the Bat family with a friend is awesome but… This is meant to be played in singleplayer.

  • Katboy

I have zero sympathy for Nintendo…anyways, the WiiU’s struggles/demise whatever wont threaten Nintendo as an entity. I blame the Wii…that console has created a “perception” among developers and gamers alike, and like it or not, it’s carried on over to the WiiU…honestly who in Nintendo crapped up that name?

    • Robbyfishersora

Yup should have went with a different name. Hmm..they honestly think it will sky rocket like the wii boy were they wrong.

  • Solomon_Kano

Splash Damage has me wary, but this LOOKS awesome.

Nice to know Robin’s in too, especially since this would make it Dick. I hope he’s actually relevant to the story.

  • Göran Isacson

Two teams versus each other AND a Batman and Robin team sounds kinda intriguing. But I do wonder why WiiU gets cut out… maybe it doesn’t have the online functionalities of the other two consoles? It’s too much hassle to design it for WiiU’s online structure? Seriously I’m just spitballing stuff here, there must be SOME economic reason behind the multiplayers exclusion here.

  • SerendipityX

So is the Wii-U version gonna be cheaper? You know since it’s not getting the full package? oh, right it’s still gonna be full price.

    • Elvick

So are you saying you want games to cost more when a multiplatform game is the same on all platforms, but has extra features on Wii U?

      Because, that’s the same logic.

  • Robbyfishersora

Suck for Wii U owner. Better the lower price.

  • Optimu$ Prime

“Don’t understand why everyone’s crying about the Wii-U version NOT having these features … I mean WHO wants to play as some nickle and dime thugs, when you can play as me?” (-Batman)
