What Do You Want From A Metal Gear Rising Sequel?

By Ishaan . August 2, 2013 . 10:10am

On the official website for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Konami have linked to “Metal Gear Fan Survey” that asks a number of questions related to Metal Gear Rising and the Metal Gear Solid series, as well as questions more loosely related to the action game genre in general.

For instance, the survey asks if you’ve played other titles by PlatinumGames, such as Bayonetta and Vanquish. It also asks if you’ve played Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty.

With regard to Rising itself, the survey tests your knowledge of the series, before moving on to ask about what you would want from a potential sequel. Did you know it was produced by Platinum? Do you think the game is directed by Hideo Kojima? Are you under the impression that the game is a button-masher? Do you want more romance in a future game? Online play?

Other questions pertain to marketing. Where did you learn about the game? What sources of information were most useful to you? What key visuals or illustrations from the game do you recognize immediately?

  • A high quality title developed by Kojima Production that details Raiden’s cyborg origin story set between Metal Gear Solid 2 and 4.

A game with predatory stealth action and the freedom to cut anything, rather than this Platinum-esque hack and slash nonsense.

A game built on the FOX engine from the ground up that demonstrates the graphical prowess and trademark elegance of Kojima Productions.

Basically, I want the original Metal Gear Solid: Rising. More than anything.

    • KingGunblader

A thousand thumbs up for this. I actually liked Revegeance, but I really miss the original Rising concept.

      • Me too. I don’t want them to even think about a Revengeance sequel until they’ve delivered the original promise.

        • Randgriz

It was sad to see the concept of evil (red eye) raiden wasted in the story, only included for gameplay purposes and never really justified in the story.

          • Asura

Ugh, it’s pretty damn justified. It’s simply not 100% literal.

    • Tom

The way Raiden was transformed into a cyborg ninja. I want to know that part.

    • Danilo Maeda

Original Rising? You mean the game that never happened because it was in shambles and crumbles and no one could figure out how they could fix and make the game work properly, so they asked for P* nonsense to fix it and with little dev time and budget they managed to make the game playable and a success?

      I sure hope you’re not.

    • Asura

The original was a trainwreck of epic proportions. If you want a completely new attempt at it that’s fine. But please don’t ask for the original, that’s like asking for the proposed Canada-US pipeline to break over your house and drown your dog with the spilled crude oil.

      • Göran Isacson

Agreed. “A game with predatory stealth action and the freedom to cut anything” WAS attempted, but there just wasn’t anyone around who COULD do it. It was an unfortunate pipe-dream, no more, no less.

“A game built on the FOX engine from the ground up that demonstrates the graphical prowess and trademark elegance of Kojima Productions.”

Almost sounded like a car ad O_o’

    • AaqibRawat

the game was always tagged as lightning bolt action?
you get your wish with mgs5

      • No, MGSV is tagged ‘Tactical Espionage Operations’.

  • Rohan Kishibe

For it to actually come to the vita…

  • Randgriz

A better story with an actual theme exploring philosophy.

  • Go2hell66

    More kickass music

    • Repede91

      I`m with this guy!

    • colorblindnightmare

One f the best ost’s. PERIOD

  • More badassness

  • Sal

Longer main story and real-time weapon switching.

  • Guest

    PC and Wii U versions.

    • Ardus

PC version is is already on its way.

  • z_merquise

I participated in the survey (and if you like Rising and want a sequel, please you should too).

I do like the concept of Rising (when it was still under the development of Koji Pro) but I became instantly hyped for the game the day Platinum Games become the developer.

Though I already love the current MG Rising, as long as they can further improve the game (gameplay and content-wise) and it’s still Platinum Games developing it, I would really love to see a sequel.

  • Tales_of_Master

In my eyes, Platinum Games can do no wrong. Give them the chance to make a sequel with the same level of involvement from KojiPro in order to maintain the series trademark feel and I would be more than happy.

Additions like a longer story mode, deeper combat with real-time weapon switching, longer stealth segments or at least making stealth more viable, and finally adding more bosses would all be welcomed additions to the Revengeance formula, and would definitely serve to make the Rising series even more amazing.

Unlike many others, I don’t miss the old Rising game, since it never got released in the first place which means it wasn’t up to Kojima’s standards, unlike Revengeance which he praised a lot as more of what he though Rising should be. People really need to stop talking about “Kojima’s standards” when he clearly preferred Revengeance over Rising.

  • fool

Find some writers over the age of 13.

And I know they were rushed but the quality of that campaign dropped off a cliff real fast.

  • DCBlackbird

Didn’t this guy have a son?

  • ChiffonCake

I, for one, would love a story featuring Grey Fox.

  • ParrotProphet

I was disqualified during the part where I was choosing consoles. I picked 360, Playsation 2, 3DS, PC, Wii/Wii U, and then picked I don’t have any other consoles.

    Wow. I’m wondering if it’s because I didn’t pick PS3?

  • Lynx

The only thing I would want is different characters. That’s something I liked in Blade Wolf and Sam’s DLC.

  • Luis Camargo

What I want from a MGR sequel:

    -To exist
    -To be launched
    -Developed by Platinum Games

    That’s all.

  • as long as its made by platinum who cares about anything else

  • Josué

    Skateboarding Raiden!

  • Josué

    Skateboarding Raiden!

  • Cerzel

I went through that entire survey and it didn’t give me a single option to say that I hated George. Oh well.
There was a lot in there, although I felt like half of it was answering the same questions multiple times. I’m most interested in the bit towards the end about what you’d like to see in a sequel. Hopefully if enough people pick it we can get a new game about what happened between MGS2 and 4.

  • Will John

Longer, 5 hours is a joke

  • Cody

    – To not have such a fucking stupid story
    – See above

lol seriously? Who is the mouthbreather who downvoted me?

    • RichyGaming

      It wasn’t me -hides vote-

    • Asura

Who is the mouthbreather who’s self-esteem lies entirely in the up/down voting record? Really? Really? Do you REALLY care enough to edit whining over how sad you are over downvotes in? WHY!?

      • Cody

You wrote far more than I did, so it seems it bothers you more than me doesn’t it? Check yourself kid.

  • Naruto

This time use the fox engine

  • DCBlackbird

Take a less…… Anime-ish route or at least not as much anime influence I’m sorry but Metal Gear despite how scientifically ridiculous it is has always maintained a realistic aesthetic and Pink haired Liberian women, glowing red eyes and deep black trench coat clad super soldier samurais kind of tarnish it.

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Ah yes the psychic mantis, the colonel with electric powers, the dude controlling bees to create weapons and the vampire screamed realism.

      • DCBlackbird

Like I said scientifically ridiculous but one of the things that turned me away from Revengeance was the designs and the characters….. they weren’t lame but they just seemed like characters written by well….Platinum instead of Kojima. I mean sure Volgin had electric powers but at least they didn’t go on and make him look like a super saiyan. I’m purely speaking aesthetics though and the weirdest looking character when it came to that was Sunny.

        • Göran Isacson

I agree with you. I think it was because even if bee-man, vampire dude and bondage psychic were comic-book characters, it was the WAY they were presented. Anyone recall Twin Snakes and how people side-eyed the hell out of those cinematics? There IS a difference between presenting a world filled with super-powered weirdoes and presenting that world through the eyes of a OSTENSIBLY normal character (yes Snake is a clone soldier but he DOESN’T have insane bullet time powers), and toning the bosses so that a soldier like that can defeat them…

And designing characters that are superpowered weirdoes and who are fought BY ANOTHER superpowered weirdo. I really think that’s the split here- Raiden WAS one of the weirdoes and as such the enemy and boss designs had to be even WEIRDER than he was to stand out as “boss battles”. There wasn’t really any place for boss battles like photogenic centarian where you could actually WAIT A WEEK and have him die of old age, or plugging the controller jack into another port here in this game.

And I actually LIKE Platinum games and their style. It’s just that, there was a MOOD to the MGS games, partially because of the stuff I just talked about, and that mood just wasn’t in Revengeance.

    • Calintz YT

      That’s not even kinda true.

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

    More nanomachines!

  • drproton

I just want the stealth gameplay to work better or be removed completely.

  • Wake

More variety in combos, air combos in particular.

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Give Raiden multiple styles to fight as a ninja (himself), samurai (imitating Sam) or hand to hand fighter (imitating Armstrong)

  • Celiacus

I would’ve loved a fight with Solidus or Gray Fox in a VR mission or something. A game taking place in between 2 and 4 that explains what happened to Raiden could be awesome, that game could’ve started out from the point where Raiden got the sword in MGS2.

  • SirRichard

Honestly, I just more Revengeance. Fist fighting would be cool, it seemed fun enough from the small bit we got, but for the most part I just want more of it. Maybe have Blade Wolf playable in the main game this time?

The story could be anything; pre-MGS4 Raiden, post-Revengeance Raiden, Gray Fox, any of them. As long as it keeps the same kind of style, I’m fine with it.

  • RoxasTheUnknown1

  • FlyingSteamroller

Weapon switching on the fly, more combo potential and probably the usefulness of the unlocked skills. Quite a few of them seemed rather pointless and could no chain into any attacks. That aside, I really enjoyed the game and welcome even more improvements to it.

  • amagidyne

    * Get the MadWorld guy for the soundtrack. He’ll know what to do.
    * Maybe the protagonist could be robo-Bayonetta. Just saying.
    * More cocaine for the writers’ room.

    • DCBlackbird

I’ll be honest and say the game you’re describing is a kick ass idea….. but not a good metal gear idea

      • amagidyne

That’s possible. I haven’t played any Metal Gear games since MGS2 (nothing against them, just didn’t get around to it).

  • Ferrick

more combo and weapon switching system =D, oh and make Jack the ripper mode different than just “Go mad and cut anything without going to blade mode”, the fox blade kinda made jack the ripper mode useless

  • KnifeAndFork

    Sam Gideon DLC

  • $61526767

Definitely longer story and put more depth into game-play.. found it really addictive. Just would like to see more stuff happen in gameplay cause it would be really awesome to see what Raiden can do.

  • ivanchu77

I don´t want a metal gear rising sequel

  • Let me be able to slice the damn godmode cat at the beach!

  • Godman

Don’t care much for romance, but I would like more customization options
And more missions with more boss fights with more awesome music

    • Anime10121

Who doesnt want more conversations with Rose?

“Jack, do you remember what tomorrow is?”

“Why wont you tell me about your past Jack?”

      • Ferrick

OH GOOD GOD! I can’t imagine on how it will be like if they include it on the next game… Rose + Jack’s son combo talking with Jack

        • Anime10121

Rose- “tell him what you asked me honey?”
Son- “Daddy, why don’t you come home much, don’t you love us?”
Raiden- “Um, *click* (rips off codec)”

          • Ferrick

Rose- “ummm Jack ? You do know that your codec is installed into your body right?”
            Raiden- “DAMMIT!”

  • For one, make the parry mechanic its own button.
Also, give us two protagonists to play as. Give us the good old “Gotham’s Dark and White Knight” dynamic.

  • Sesshomaru

More than 4 hours of gameplay would be nice.

    • Anime10121

I got 6 to 7, but yeah, a bit lengthier would be nice. Its one of the things I said I wanted in the sequel, a longer campaign.

  • Uso Ewin

Playable Grey Fox from MGS1, you can never have enough Cyborg Ninjas

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

The thing is that he is dead. He is already as skin though.

      • Pablo Sanchez

  • Anime10121

Survey was long, drawn out, and redundant as hell, but I still filled it out (a couple days ago as a matter of fact), because I DEFINITELY want a Rising 2 or a ReRising, how about Metal Gear ReRising Rerevengeance 2!

  • 27sanderrm .

Find a way to bring back Sam. Turn him into a real cyborg if you must.

  • vileBrenman

More sunny! But Actually I’d like a game that focuses on raiden’s wife and kid via codec or story

  • LonelyGamer

    More nanomachines, son

  • Zurashii

The Super Best Friends being represented in some way!

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Woolie the Liar as a Codec member.

      • Asura

Have Woolie be stealing a pie in the background of a cutscene!

  • Androu1

I just get a message saying “Hi there, we value your opinion! We’re sorry, but you don’t meet the requirements to enter this survey. ” after the question asking which MGS games I’ve played.

    Screw this survey.

    Pisses me off.

  • Joshua Myers

    More open-world

  • Bakuryukun

Oh okay, so apparently because I’m from Canada they don’t give a crap what I think.

For the record though I really liked Rising, and I’d like to see more games in it’s style in the series. No need we can’t have a stealth series and an action series.

  • AaqibRawat

i would have liked to fight monsoon sam sundowner and the sexy red head woman a second time. like in god hand

  • Guest

nothing, I want Suikoden 1 to be VITA compatible, Suikoden II on PSN and VITA compatible and Suikoden VI

  • JMaster3000

Konami, i’m still waiting for the PC port of the first one….

    • Brandonmkii

      Wrong company there, mate.

  • brian

I wish they’d have had a section for general stuff people want.
Based on the demos of this and DmC, they’d benefit immensely from something like a VR mode with bunches of stupid, respawning enemies.
Raiden’s and Dante’s weapons are designed for a Sengoku Basara level of carnage.
And also they should make the codec portraits like old MGS, almost static but not really, because as is they’re creepy and the lip syncing is too off.
I also forgot that it should’ve had a guard button and the analog sticks for blade mode should be reversed since they control opposite of their normal functions.

  • Xed51

More of Mistral’s ass. Oh wait, there’s the bladewolf dlc already.

  • Fedex_01

The first game was really a mess, had nothing like the real games created by Hideo Kojima and less of the Metal Gear saga, it was just another Bayonetta skin as a follower …. I just hope the series fail to perform this disasters that can only be used by the casual gamers and hatred by the followers of a saga … a little more commitment for those that do appreciate the world of Video Games and a great creator like Hideo Kojima.
