New StreetPass Games For 3DS Earned $4 Million In A Month

By Ishaan . August 3, 2013 . 5:00pm

Recently, Nintendo launched four new games for their StreetPass Mii Plaza on the Nintendo 3DS. Unlike the StreetPass games that came pre-loaded onto the system, the four new games are paid apps, and cost $5 each.

Speaking with Tokyo Keizai Online, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata shared that these four games have already turned a tidy profit. In about a single month following their release, the games have generated about $4 million together.

Last month, Iwata mentioned that the four StreetPass Mii Plaza games had been purchased by over 200,000 Nintendo 3DS owners.

$5 per game that’s seriously overprice. Not to mention I barely street pass with anyone..

    • Taylor Greene

For those of us that streetpass frequently they are great!

    • Suicunesol

Those are standard eShop prices, you handsome human you.

    • Hunts Rattata

There’s supposed to be an update soon that let’s you StreetPass people through public SpotPass locations. Hopefully that’ll make StreetPass a little more functional for some of us.

  • I bought all 4 for 15 on 2 3DS. All are fun except maybe the flower growing game, but I love Animal Crossing. So Its not too bad in my opinion.

    • ThomasTruong

Not really digging the Warlord one since the menu speed of collecting soldiers to build up your army is really slow. I’m indifferent to the flower one but it does have a decent breeding element.

The other two are pretty good though since they involve more “skill
      than just sorting through menus.

      • Ben Sylvia

Oh god I hate the warlord one.

Hardly anyone that I get streetpasses with regularly and half of them have it also and a larger army than mine so I don’t get anything for it when I tag them. And you can only get a decent number of troops via play coins if you use 10 or more, which is a whole day’s worth. Which could go further towards getting more play tickets in one of the other games.

Maybe the system should get basic functionality, like messaging that works without needing to shut down a game entirely or standard purchase protection using a basic account system. Those things should probably take priority over giving their social integration platform paid DLC.

Nah, that’s not the ‘innovative’ Nintendo way.

  • Muffum

Got the bundle of them with some of the credit from the SMT/FE deal. So it came as no real loss to me.

    • Raltrios

If Ninty is giving $30 free credit for that combo, does that really count as money in their bank accounts when used to purchase games? Isn’t that essentially just creating free money out of nowhere?

      • Ying

Yes it does. SMT IV costs 50 while FE:A costs 40. Put together this would be 90 dollars 30 of which they would give back, but they’d still have 60 from the combined purchases. It will also help them in the long run because of the crossover SMT X Fire Emblem. This way more people will be fans of both games and so be more inclined to buy the game for the Wii U which should lead to higher sales of the Wii U and more people buying the game.

  • Wow, $4 million in one month? Great sales of the 3DS and software? A profitable quarter despite lackluster sales of the Wii U?

Looks like it’s time for Nintendo to go third-party :P

That was a joke, by the way. Just in case someone takes it too seriously.

The streetpass is a cool feature, sadly I don’t use it. I don’t take my handlehelds out of the house. Curious to see if pokemon x & y along with MH4 will have streetpass features.

    • Haseyo

MH3G/U has Streetpass so I’d imagine MH4 will as well. At the least, Pokemon will probably have a player card SP system. I always take my handhelds with me because….well that’s kind of the purpose, but I don’t blame some for not if you’re paranoid of losing them.

  • PersonaBull

I wonder what the ETA is on that WiFi checkpoint upgrade for streetpass. I haven’t heard anything about it since they announced it. Once I start getting more than a few streetpasses a month I’ll be more inclined to join in on this. Glad to see ti’s doing well! I’ve always liked the idea of streetpasses, especially with games that can integrate it into gameplay/prizes.

    • I thought the streetpass checkpoint already arrived in america, there was a video about it in the e shop

  • My Little endy

I love them. I wish you could shut off the never-ending tutoral in Flower Town, and I often find myself putting Mii Force off until later, as a single sitting of that game is a lot longer than the others, but I still really enjoy all 4.

Plus, I get a whole lot of street passes. 2 a day normally and up to 10 on Wednesdays and Sundays.

  • hazelnut1112

Damn, and I really am tempted to buy the bundle which gives you a free game. I only have $5 in my wallet. Not sure which one to get though. I’m waiting for SMB 3 to be on the eShop. I will probably get the bundle way later. $4million in one month is really really impressive.

    • I’d say wait. Grab all four games at once, because the bundle option disappears if you buy one game alone.

      • hazelnut1112

That sounds like a better deal then. Didn’t know it disappears after that. I thought you could still buy the bundle and keep an extra one to send as a gift.

  • I bought ’em. Love them too. Flower Town would be much improved if Mr. Mendel disappeared after the first two sessions and there were more “jobs” available at a time, but it’s fun. The only downside is, now it takes me like 15 minutes to get through my Mii Plaza activities now. XD

  • ReidHershel

I wish I constantly streetpassed, would totally buy these.

  • KHSoraKeyBlade

That’s pretty good for Nintendo, unfortunately I cannot bring myself to pay €5 for games that require me to get hits from people as I live in a place where a streetpass is rare if I am not near my friends. I’ll stick with the Puzzle Swap and StreetPass Quest for now. But I am curious, are the games any good?

    • lozffvii

I’m probably in exactly the same situation that you’re in, but I still bought them.
All of them are fun in their own way, but my favourite is probably street pass squad, which is a side-scrolling shooter where your street pass hits act as your shot type and your hit points. It’s frustrating at points but quite fun. My favourite feature of the game is being able to ‘re-hire’ your past street pass hits (up to a maximum of three), even if you met them before you got the game. This comes in useful if they’re in the colour of your favourite shot type.

      • KHSoraKeyBlade

Hmm, I might check them out at some point, thanks. :D

      • J_Joestar

        re-hiring Blue Miis en mass!

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    Wow impressive

  • Thatguy

4 million $ in a month from streetpass games? Nintendo is DOOOOOOOMED

  • Are these worth getting if I find Puzzle Swap and Find Mii to be a bit tedious? I generally have my 3DS with me when I’m on the go or at work, but it’d be nice to have a little more incentive to always be streetpassing

    • J_Joestar

Force and Monster Manor are genuinely very fun, Warrior is Ok, the flower thing is fairly meh.

  • The Watcher

That’s what happens when you run out of games to play on 3ds
