Namco are trying out free-to-play models with more and more of their games. As you’ve likely heard, Tekken and Ace Combat already have free-to-play games, and now Ridge Racer is joining them.

Ridge Racer Driftopia is a free-to-play title for PC and PlayStation 3, and is being developed by Bugbear Entertainment, who developed Ridge Racer Unbounded. The game is currently in closed beta on Steam, and you can sign up for registration here.

Ridge Racer Driftopia is planned for release sometime later this year.

I have this preconception about F2P racing games being pay to win in the sense that there’s cars that you can buy that normally tend to be faster than regular cars, like exotic and sports cars.

Not a big fan of the last Ridge Racer game, didn’t feel like Ridge Racer at all… and I think they’ll use that one as a template for this F2P one.
