No, This Isn’t Dead Or Alive – It’s Girl Fight

By Ishaan . August 22, 2013 . 11:22am

Girl Fight is a 3D fighting game developed by Kung Fu Factory, featuring a cast of female characters that have been abducted by a mysterious corporation looking to tap into their “Psi Powers”. As part of this initiative, the girls are thrown into a virtual reality fighting arena and let loose to duke it out:

The mysterious group, it so happens, is called “The Foundation” and holds a record of the memories, battles and traumas of the women it has abducted. These records are stored in its high-tech computer, ATHENA, which creates virtual reality environments based on the memories of the combatants.

Girl Fight is slated for release on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this fall.

Skull Girls, Dead or Alive….(I know Hayabusa is in the game)

You know, guys like to fight too!

I feel excluded. I should make a video how women are being viewed as fighters while men are being pushed back on the back burner.

Edit: apparently people couldn’t catch the high amounts of sarcasm. Atleast the upvoters got it.

    • Kelohmello

“I know Hayabusa is in the game”

You know DOA has way more male characters than Hayabusa right? That’s not even close to a girl exclusive fighter.

      • Souffrir

I think DOA5U might bring it to even now, though I can’t recall the entire added cast off the top of my head, but DOA5 actually has more male fighters than female. I don’t understand why people think it’s some kind of clamfest just because it has a roughly even roster of male and female fighters.

      • Brutal2D

        I was being sarcastic….

        You know, humor?

        • KingRuff

They didn’t point out your sarcasm. Just the fact that DOA has more guys than Hayabusa. You could have just said “I know DOA has guys in it” whatever sarcasm was there would have remained intact.

          • ndjn3979

You don’t get his sarcasm either lol

        • Kelohmello

Pretty poor sarcasm. Keep in mind on the internet, in text, it’s not only harder to detect sarcasm, but in all likelihood it’s being done poorly if one can’t tell in the first place.

          • Brutal2D

Or maybe you take comments too seriously.

          • zaidandzhadow

They’re angry cause they expected to see more boobs in the video.

    • Odin

What? There are easily more fighters out there with male oriented casts than anything. Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Killer Instinct, Tekken (and various other probably more obscure fighters that I failed to name) etc, wane in their favor.

If anything all-female fighters are a rarity. That’s why games like Arcana Heart, Aquapazza, and Vanguard Princess are so refreshing, because of the LACK of males. Frankly, the way I look at things, you can only have so many Bruce Lee style characters before the trope gets overdone.

      • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

You aren’t familiar with satire much, are you?

        • Odin

And I’m supposed to know “everyone” inside and out using it, am I right? I’m guessing you’ve never heard of the saying how you can’t always tell someone’s intentions through text? Especially on the internet?

Ever thought about that before posting?

          • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

I have thought of that before and it was REALLY obvious in his intentions. I am not saying or expect you to know what exactly everyone is thinking through the internet especially the part about Ryu , when most people know there is more than just him in terms of males in DoA. Also what you said about “Bruce Lee” style characters being overdone is horribly inaccurate in recent years as that archetype is only used at this point by Jann Lee, Fei Long and Marshall (and Forrest) Law. Which is 4 characters.

          • Odin

I never mentioned anything about Hayabusa, but denying that Bruce Lee isn’t done to death? Like I said, there are other fighters you (and I) fail to mention beyond the ones that are well known.

          • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

I never said you mentioned Ryu, what I meant by that was, that phrase was a give away (at least to me) that he was joking. Oh for sure that Bruce Lee character has been done to death but I did say “at this point” so I meant recently. Why exactly did you bring up Bruce Lee anyway, in this case?

          • Odin

Because he signifies the typical male fighting game character. There’s a lack of feminine guy types like Leo or Eliot.

For the record, it’s just an observation. Perfectly straight here, if you somehow don’t catch the meaning… yeah.

          • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

I think of Ryu or the guy in karate gear when I think of that. But hey each to their own. Has Namco actually state Leo is a guy yet? They never specified his/her gender if I remember.

          • Odin

You know, I was going to say male, but I think the wiki just destroyed my point. He’s a “she”.

            http://tekken.wikia.com/wiki/Leo_Kliesen

          • Zero_Destiny

Okay you two, drop it. It’s gone on long enough and it’s gotten too far off-topic.

      • Brutal2D

        Sarcasm, learn it.

        • Odin

Oh, I’m sorry, I don’t feel like I need to refute another response to my comment below. How’s that?

          Happy?

          • Brutal2D

            Yes very, thank you.

      • Rolling Guy

Rival Schools, Bloody Roar, and MvC ;P

    • raitouniverse

This post is probably just a parody. I mean, it should be obvious that there are tons of fighters out there with generally equal numbers of guys->girls or more guys than girls.

      • Brutal2D

        was joking.

    • Zero_Destiny

Next time it might help to put a JK, or lulz, or something of the sort, maybe even /sarcasm, at the end of your joke. That way people can tell easier. Sarcasm can be hard to tell sometimes in the comment section. :)

      • Brutal2D

“You know, guys like to fight too!”

        come on….

        • Zero_Destiny

Just a friendly warning, unless you really enjoyed watching a bunch of people totally miss your joke, and get upset with you. But hey, if that’s really what ya’ wanted, then that’s cool.

          • Brutal2D

Did you just give me a mod warning?

          • Zero_Destiny

Let’s all try to stay on topic next time instead of having to deal with a lot of “It was sarcasm, don’t you know” comments.

Jokes are fine, we all enjoy a good one every now and again here, but attitude and getting too far off topic is another thing. In the future, I suggest watching out for it.

          • Brutal2D

But you’re the one who took it away from the initial topic with your first comment.

Why would I be warned for something YOU started?

            How does that even work?

So I can’t reply to the people who question my first comment?

            You’re not making any sense.

          • Zero_Destiny

*Alright, we’re stopping this here, so don’t even reply me*

I advised you, and I would like to add, as kindly as I could, that it might help to identify your sarcasm, since I noticed that it became a bit of a thing. I didn’t even approach you as a mod, just a friendly little bit of advice. Some readers are not native to the English language, and while a lot others are, we sometimes skim comment sections and subtleties can be missed.

You then sassed me, so I broke it down for you and explained proper conduct. Look, if you wanna write a funny joke, please go ahead, but if you wanna derail the comments that’s another thing. Anything past this is a warning, so you better quit while you’re ahead.

  • raitouniverse

This game looks awful. I almost thought it was cancelled.

  • Kelohmello

Hm. It used to look MUCH MUCH worse than this. But now it just looks like DOA. I shouldn’t say that without trying it, but still, as it is it doesn’t interest me.

  • Johnathan Lenig-Lopez

I dunno… fighting doesn’t look bad, but the art looks cheap and the music… ugh…

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

I hate to say this but it looks worse than DOA 3.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

Animations look closer to early Bloody Roar games too.

      • Juan Andrés Valencia

Not really, even Bloody Roar on the Gamecube looks better than… this thing. Now that I think about it I would love a new Bloody Roar game.

        • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

Well I did say early I meant like Bloody Roar 2 on the PS1. A new BR is rumored dunno if it has been debunked yet though.

          • Sion Cruz

I second the Bloody Roar game wanting.. Psychic Force 3 anyone?

          • Juan Andrés Valencia

You are right, it does look like a PS1 game.

    • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

Saying that this looks worse than a game consider by many fans to be the best in its series (gameplay-wise) isn’t saying very much… lol.

      • Solomon_Kano

        He means visually.

        • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

Even then, DoA3 was incredible-looking for its time and imo still looks great today next to a lot of games out there…

          • Juan Andrés Valencia

Which is why I compared this to DOA 3. The game is over 10 years old and it still looks amazing, which is quite an achievement.

          • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

I guess I misunderstood what exactly you were getting at then, lol. I would just think you’d choose a game that wouldn’t be considered to still look so amazing today… at least the original DOA2 (on PS2 or Dreamcast), lol.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Oh yeeah this was announced ages ago. Totally forgot about it. I remember 1up getting all angry about it.

  • SlickRoach

Girl Fight? Man, you’d think that was a working title or something.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

I’m sure it was SG’s working title at some point. Having it as an actual title seems silly.

      • SlickRoach

I guess Skull Girls grew on me because part of the story actually involves the Skull Heart and the risk of turning into a Skull Girl. I don’t know what you could possibly make out of Girl Fight to spice it up a bit.

        • FitzpatrickPhillips

What he is saying is that SG used “Girl Fight” as a working title.

          • SlickRoach

I know that’s what he was trying to say, but the big difference was that the title changed by release. Not sure if this will change any time soon. Not that I’m following this game though.

    • Crimson_Cloud

More alike a flash browser h-game. XD

  • Tom

    Bonus round: catfight!

  • Sardorim

What are they all even wearing!?

  • Ryuukishi

I like the idea, but this looks pretty primitive compared to DOA5, or just in general really. It looks kind of like an HD upscale of a PS2 game.

    • NintendoPSX

Lol I was about to type “Is this for PS2?”!

      • roydgriffin

        Me too! XD

  • harmonyworld

And of course, a game called Girl Fight has bouncing boob physics and over-sexualized costumes. *sigh*

  • Hunts Rattata

    Shocker, this project isn’t dead.

Double shocker, it doesn’t seem COMPLETELY terrible anymore.

Here’s hoping they ditched having extra abilities unlocked through the in-game economy. That sort of system is great for costumes and extras, but having gameplay options locked behind a “grindwall,” and also having them compete for the same currency as non-gameplay stuff, just really stinks.

The wager system they talked about last year seemed kind of detrimental to online play as well, but not fundamentally so. It would depend on how they implement.

  • Brimfyre

Someone must really hate DOA to compare it to this.

  • DenjinJ

Are these guys going to get sued for copying animation data files straight out of DoA2? Seriously, a lot of those moves look not like they’re trying to animate the same move, but like they’re using the very same animations…

Also, holy crap – Microprose?! I thought they’d been gone for the last 20 years or so…

  • doubleO7

Wow, that sure doesn’t look much better than PS2/Xbox/GC era graphics. I’m almost surprised they weren’t able to downgrade it enough to make that Dreamcast version they talked about a reality.

  • Josephl64

The title is an insult to DoA

  • Sergio Briceño

Can’t really say for sure without looking at the damage of each move/combo. But this game looks like it has serious balance issues.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

at lest you don’t have worry about guys hitting sexy women in this

  • British_Otaku

    Wub wub.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      you meant La fap

  • ndjn3979

It doesn’t look terrible or whatever. Except that’s exactly the problem. It looks generic and uninspired.

  • eilegz

sure having a full female chast its apealling but seriously those dated graphics kill it =/

  • leingod

I can’t get enough fighting games, so I’ll still be checking this one. Characters don’t seem to have any personality at all, though… I hope they flesh that out.

  • Strain42

Sooo…it’s like a slightly worse Rumble Roses?

    • Rolling Guy

Oh hell no. Rumble Roses was way better than this one. Besides, those games are way different.

  • Carlos Luis Ayala

Watch the other video it’s like DOA but with Street Fighter powers
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QK8rIixpa_I

  • DriftSlave

    Lulz this game looks terrible….

  • TheHolypopeofgaming

    They stole my game

  • TeddyAltman

It’s like the low production-value is seeping through my screen.

  • Göran Isacson

Well. That looks and sounds insanely skeevy.

  • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

I will play any fighting game I can get my hands on. I used to love checking out even the 3/10 rated fighters during the first 3D fighting game boom (even the ones on the N64, lol). That’s not to say this will be guaranteed for 3/10 scores… for the graphics, at least, it can be said in their defense that it looks fine for an indie 3D downloadable game. Sure it doesn’t look up to snuff next to even other indie, small-dev fighting games, but those are usually 2D and usually have some seasoned talents behind them to give them the quality to stand up against other established series in the genre. I think this could prove to have some original angles to it. Let’s see how it is when it’s out.

And this marks the second entry on consoles of a western-made all-girls fighter… neat :)

  • Alberto Maytorena

A generic 3D fighting game whose gimmick is that every single one of the three female fighters in it is a gimmick. How avant-garde.

  • protofox

its like a video game adaption of the live action dead or alive movie thats not the dead or alive video game

  • Zero_Destiny

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha XD Now see this is your only funny joke today. ;)

    deleted then.

  • ndjn3979

Don’t know where siliconera is going with this kind of mod behavior…hunting out some obscure sarcasm post and criminalizing it while actual fanboy assholes throwing out insults, bigotry, and discrimination go scot-free.

No, I am not in anyway affiliated with “Brutal2D”. Just pointing out something that I’ve been observing for a long while. Feel free to use your mod powers as a leverage for your “superiority” on me as well.

  • Ferrick

those get deleted too, in case you never noticed

  • ndjn3979

They certainly linger quite longer than they need to.

  • Ferrick

because everyone has a life and modding isn’t their 24/7 work ? Seriously, get a clue

  • ndjn3979

I can already see this growing to some long-winded, useless, and off-topic argument. I’m not even going to bother with you.

As a disclaimer, I am not saying they need to have only siliconera as their sole duty in life. Just expressing some disappointment in the choice of priority in censorship and moderation.

My reaction to seeing Brutal2D treated that way by some of his peers was “Jesus Christ, a guy can’t make a joke without someone (ignorant of the original material as the target of the satire) having to get defensive/corrective?”

Sure, that kind of defensive/corrective behavior is all right. It’s tolerated. They can attack the satirist, with no basis but their incorrect information, and get away with it because they were OFFENDED (unjustifiably) and felt the need to DEFEND some connection to the material they feel are being attacked by the satirist.

But the satirist? Nope. Totally intolerable. A sin. DOWNVOTE THAT ****! [/end sarcasm]#YOLO

What the heck is up with the gamer audience nowdays? Can’t take a joke, relishes ganging up on a perceived enemy, and expects automatic acceptance for any bigoted outlook. And apologizing is considered akin to suicide.

  • Ferrick

first things first, even if it was meant to be a joke, it was a shitty one

second, do you think that mods can just magically know on what thread has shitposters, and delete it without even looking?

third, don’t try to make yourself to look like a saint too, your post isn’t any better than the ones you’re criticizing

  • M’iau M’iaut

    Sorry for the late post.

When someone makes a post, regardless of what that post is or is about, it is the poster’s job to make their point and focus clear. It is not the job of our community to be psychic and know everything meant by the original post.

Note the time stamps on these posts — more than one poster found the humor missing or misplaced and when commenting on that, received very negative replies. The mod simply first approached the original poster and said, hey just make things a little clearer and these blowups don’t happen. The response, more anger. It wasn’t the satire that drew our attention, but the reactions afterwards.

I do think that any of the posts you are concerned about will be treated the same way. Deletes, friendly talks and yes even warnings. Do note that at no point did we even give a single warning.

  • ndjn3979

This sounds more professional than the other mod. Thanks for the clarification. I was blowing steam, too. Sorry for the drama.

  • M’iau M’iaut

No worry. Just do remember any of us can sound different than a day after the event.
