Check Out Level 5’s Brand New RPG For PS3, Wii U, Xbox One And PS4

By Ishaan . August 26, 2013 . 6:03am

Level 5 are working on a brand new cross-platform RPG titled WonderFlick, for PlayStation 3, Wii U, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Vita, iOS and Android. The game will have an exclusive dungeon on each platform, and features Nobuo Uematsu as its composer. You can watch a debut trailer for it below:

WonderFlick will incorporate a second screen. On the PS4, this will be done via smartphones and tablets. On Xbox One, Level 5 will use SmartGlass. The game will launch for consoles in 2014, and you can find more details on it in our previous report.

Very interesting! I hope we get to see some actual console footage of the game. Depending on the game mechanics I might get it for either Wii U or PS4, especially on how they use that second screen. :)
    Well assuming it’ll be localized.
    …will it? XD

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Why would you get it on the PS4? You’d buy it on the Vita or on a phone.

      • GH56734

It would be safe to assume the console versions will be different from the mobile versions. Maybe the Vita version as well.

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

          Each version has exclusive dungeons

          • courte

if the ps4 version has second screen functions, wouldn’t that mean more gameplay options are unlocked if you buy the console version? my only confusion is choosing to not use the vita as the second screen perhaps via cross buy. it’d probably be a slap in the face to the handhelds capability but… hmm sometimes i think sony has great ideas but the industry as a whole shoots them in the foot

      • XypherCode

It would be nice on Vita. But I prefer most of my RPGs on home consoles. Unless it’s an enhanced remake or something.

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

You need a second screen first of all, and if you have a phone already then you’d buy it on a phone. It looks very phone centric

          • James Carney

You don’t seem to understand the concept here… The game uses a second screen but is a game for consoles only. You NEED to have it on a console, the tablet/phone/smartglass functionality is just part of the game not the game itself.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

But the game is on phones in the first place, why would I buy it on a PS4(which requires a phone to play it according to this article) when I can use a phone to play it?

          • InfectedAI

Are you sure about this? Everywhere is reporting an iOS and Android release. No one has clarified it won’t work on those platforms on its own.

      • LM009

aren’t all ps4 games required to have remote play compatibility? I guess it’s not the same as full vita compatibility but still..

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Remote play is a Vita function anyway….
So it is vita compatibility, but its also cross platform however all of these games are touch based right,

So even if you get a PS4 version you’d need a second screen…

          • LM009

oh gotcha, I don’t think it’s a big deal anyhow most people do have a tablet/smartphone these days anyways.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Im just saying I dont see the point in buying multiple copies of the game when you if you have a phone you can simply get it on your phone. If you need a phone for it to work properly on a console in the first place which is kinda odd lmao

    • Karl Josef

      then watch this :)
This video shows how cross-platform works

      • Cameron Ward

the game doesn’t look that different graphically from all of the consoles and phone versions. Makes it better to get any version you want to get without having to worry about getting one over the other due to better graphics.

  • Cameron Ward

the PS4 will use phone or tablets? sure, dont use the Vita or anything….

    • Katboy

but there will be a Vita version…

      • Cameron Ward

yes, but why not use it as a Wii U tablet with this PS4 version?

        • XypherCode

I’m wondering about that as well. But maybe it’s because almost all PS4 games can be played on the Vita and they thought to just make a separate Vita version of the game. I’m not sure, but I think what the Vita can do with PS4 games is just play the whole game on the system. Not like the Wii U, that can actually have separate images and controls from the TV and controller. I might be wrong though.

          • malek86

You are likely right, in that the PSV will probably only allow for image streaming from the console. Having separate images for TV and controller would require a different level of integration, and I don’t think Sony will do that – especially as they already said that you won’t be able to use the PSV as a PS4 controller.

          • Kevadu

Er, they never said that you can’t use a Vita as a PS4 controller, it’s just that it needs to be explicitly supported. It’s not automatic, like Remote Play is.

        • malek86

Yoshida said almost all PS4 games (sans the ones that require the camera) will allow for remote play on the PSV.

So I’m going to assume there was no reason for Level 5 to point out you can do it, since every game can do it.

          • Kevadu

Remote Play and using the Vita as a second screen are completely different things!

Obviously the latter needs to be explicitly supported because it’s not like there’s a standard for what the game should do with that second screen.

  • riceisnice

Aww, it’s like on every single console except the 3DS.

    • Asclepius

funny that the 3ds is the only platform with actual built-in 2nd
screen (other than Wii U that is) and this game’s universe is somewhat based on Fantasy Life :

I need to confirm something, i heard somewhere that this gameis gonna be a F2P with microtransactions, it this true?

    • XypherCode

Scarce on resources maybe? I think they’re focusing 3DS development efforts on Layton 7, since Wonderflick is being developed on almost all platforms aside from PC, 360, and 3DS. I assume these games are being developed in parallel so taking away resources from Layton 7 just to add to Wonderflick might be too much for them.

  • G.

    “a brand new cross-platform RPG”

Or do you mean multiplatform? They have different meanings these days. ;/

    • Danilo Aimini

They mean both, as I read the save files can be moved and shared between platforms.

    • PlayLife

It’s both multi-platform and cross-platform because ppl will be able to share save-games between systems.

      • G.

        Ah, okay. Cross-saves.

  • Anonymous

I hope it is not like Ni no Kuni, I disliked that game, But i still want to give Level-5 games a chance, Nope i didn’t play Layton but was interested

  • Virevolte

Et voilà ! Welcome in my Nobuo Uematsu playlist.

  • This looks pretty good imo! Level 5 did an amazing job with Ni no Kuni and I can feel some good vibes coming from this game too! Hope it gets localized! I’ll probably give it a try on PSVita!

  • Andar

So is this like four exclusive dungeons, or seven? And I wonder what they mean by exclusive. I get that it means they will be different, but will they have different materials and such? Given that it’s a Level 5 RPG, I am guessing there will be an item crafting system, and if each version’s dungeon has exclusive item crafting materials…

    • GH56734

Ninokuni DS did have its exclusive dungeons: Xanadu’s Dragon Den and Arae Memoriae. While the PS3 version had the Ivory Castle and that belly dungeon. And all quests are different, and some mechanics are exclusive to some versions (not talking about the glaring gameplay system differences), like the Tensei Drops for the DS version.
Since the PS3, Wii U, and maybe if we were to stretch it a bit the Vita (doubt it’s the same though, since there’s no way for it to have a double screen), and being launch/early titles the PS4 and Xbone versions would have roughly the same gameplay system.. then we have 4 or 5 exclusive dungeons in the common sense of the term. I would count the iPhone and Android ones as different games altogether with dungeons named the same way like Ninokuni but are different from their console counterparts.

It’s alluring to hope someone makes some modding tools to port these dungeons from other versions to the PS3 / Wii U versions. After all, it has been done before with costumes and songs in other games.. I wouldn’t like to redo the game from scratch for each version to get to the juicy bits…

      • KonjikinoSora

I thought Arae Memoriae was in the PS3 version.

        • GH56734

But not its 100-floor bonus dungeon, that’s for sure. It was called Moya Island in the Japanese version, but I used the English name

  • Eduardo Revoredo

Insta-buy. Ni No Kuni was the best jRPG I played this gen, I need more!

  • Sentsuizan_93

    Interesting. Plus, DAT Uematsu….

    • Anime10121

Not really all that interested, but I do agree on DAT Uematsu :P

  • malek86

Interesting, but from the game concept it looks like the kind of quick game that benefits more from being on smartphones rather than a home console. If it gets localized on Android, I might try it out.

  • Magnumsally

    1) why no 3ds?
    2) This looks so bad (like everything they showed todAY)

  • $61526767

Found this game really interesting. Going to get it for my Vita of course. Also, the music had a great feeling. Can’t wait to see more!

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

This game looks really nice.^_^ It gives me that Dragon Quest 9 vibe which is of course a great feeling.

If this game does released outside of Japan, i am going to get this game for my Wii U as i don’t really have a big tablet to play this game properly.^_^

    • Merrick

I think that it would be more natural to play the game on the Wii U, out of the major consoles, so that’s my choice also. I am personally very interested in the game also, and do believe that it will see a localization.

  • xxx128

Looks fucking amazing! So gonna get this for vita.

    • sakusakusakura_nyo

I’ll probably get the Vita version too if it comes out in the US.

  • KonjikinoSora

I heard that this is free-to-play, it may be the first game of that sort to come to Wii U.

  • Ziggy Wish

    Gimmie (>-_-)>

  • Thrasher429

Looks interesting. However there is no way that dragon in the beginning would be able to fly if it actually existed (science what the hell are you doing make a dragon already)

  • It looks great for a phone, tablet and Vita. But PS4? meh….

    • KnifeAndFork

Seriously, this is not what I expect to see from a near $500 next gen console

      • Level 5 probably won’t do anything serious for the PS4 until they get more practice into development for it. Maybe the port for this game will be their practice project for developing on PS4. lol.

I’m definitely looking forward to what Level 5 brings out in the next years. Ni no kuni and White Knight Chronicles were great after all.

  • Isaac Newton

    This is gonna be good.
    Because it’s Level 5! That’s why!

    • KnifeAndFork

They’ve been hit n miss this gen. Not like the PS2 days…

  • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

    Getting for Wii U

  • Learii

so I can’t use the vita as second screen I play on ps3 or ps4 version?

  • Göran Isacson

Holy heck that’s a lot of consoles and formats. Only thing I’m kind of curious about is what use the console is going to be, since fromm this trailer it looks like all controls are handled by whatever touchscreen is available. An interested experimen, but I sure would like to see more of what the actual television screen will be used for. Also, character customization! hooray!

  • zeta

the logo and the world map gives off a dragon quest feel to me

  • JustThisOne

The battle system looks really interesting! *___*

  • NightzeroAX

Wow look the xbox is getting RPGs!

  • leingod

Oh, now I get the “FLICK” part. Reminds me of Blue Dragon, with even bigger heads!

  • artemisthemp

I really hope Console version ain’t gonna like in the Trailer, because I was turn off by it.

  • ndjn3979

A phone-quality game design for console? I really can’t see them doing anything radically different among the versions. Plus, the whole set-up (from the trailer) looks HELLA uninspired.

  • KnifeAndFork

oh no…..this gen PS4 & Wii U are going to get stifled by Japanese developers “playing it minimally safe” catering to iOS. I feared this would happen. It’s not like they fully adapted to HD this gen as it is….

  • PreyMantis

It’s weird how it’s not coming for the 3DS as it looks more appropriate on that system because of the dual screen…

  • VenerableSage

The best part of the trailer was the fact that the music sounded a lot like FF8’s Boss Theme. (I mean, yes, Uematsu is doing the music, but the tracks in general felt very similar.)

I’ll wait until I see a gameplay trailer for the non-mobile versions, thank you very much.

  • MikelAL93

Looks wonderful. I’m glad to see that Level-5 is still supporting the PS3 while supporting the Wii U, PS4, and surprisingly… the Xbox One.

To see Level-5 announce something new for an Xbox system for the first time in over 10 years is also a surprise, given that their relationship with Microsoft in the past is poor, and True Fantasy Live Online would’ve helped boosted Xbox sales in Japan.

  • Can’t medieval midgets solve anything without resorting to violence?

  • Anon-non

Whenever Nintendo has some exclusive feature on their consoles, seems like it’s easily ‘borrowed’ by others. Sincere question, couldn’t they put a patent on secondary screens?

  • Zborno

This game is going to be “free to play” so I have little hope for it. Level 5 used to be my favorite developer, and it’s really sad to see how far they’ve fallen. If this type of game is their future, I have no interest in it :(

  • awat

    looks good

  • fawzowz

what amaze me is… that mobile graphics ._.

  • Cyril Murasakitsuyukusa

Lol, Level 5 are copying themselves: the castle is an exact copy of Balandor castle, the princess is a chibi version of princess Cisna, and the hero is a chibi Leonard. But the game looks really nice, except the cross-multi-platform functionality crap.

  • Ali

I love that Uemetsu has his hands in so many cookie jars! Best way to enjoy his talents in different variations!

  • Razzlero

People should really think twice about putting the word “FLICK” in the title of something in all capitals… it looks like a different word at a glance…

  • katamari damacy

So… how does dual screen work with the PS3? if you can link a smartphone with the PS3 version that would rock.

  • Lisandra_brave

So, why aren’t Vita, iOS and Android in the title?
I’m starting to notice a pattern here.
