Final Fantasy XIV Players To Get Extended Free Trials Following Troubled Launch

By Ishaan . September 1, 2013 . 5:00pm

Following its launch, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has been going through server and login issues, as well as character creation restrictions, and the game’s producer, Naoki Yoshida, has provided an update on what Square Enix plan to do about it.

“To ensure as many players as possible can log in and create characters on existing servers, our development and operations teams are monitoring server load and population around the clock, placing and removing restrictions with even the slightest fluctuation in numbers in order to maintain near-full capacity on each World,” Yoshida writes on the game’s official forums.

“We are still experiencing maximum concurrent connection numbers of over 230,000 users. This number, however, has taxed some of our instance servers, and is causing unexpected down time here, as well.”

In addition, Yoshida says, new Worlds are currently being added to the game and tested internally. Provided all goes well, Square Enix will perform an extended all-World maintenance on Wednesday (Japan time), following which the new Worlds will be made available for use by players.

Says Yoshida, “When Worlds do finally reopen after the maintenance, we expect a rush of players trying to log back in. To prevent any further login issues, we will be using the utmost caution when restarting each World. Please understand that there may be some congestion at this time.”

Finally, in order to make up for the game’s troubled launch, Square Enix are considering providing all players with an additional seven days of free trial time. This includes non-legacy players from version 1.0 of the game as well, who will be given new seven-day free trials.

These trials will be awarded after the Wednesday server maintenance, and Square Enix will announce more details about them soon.

Someone filed a BBB report. Haha.

    • Brion Valkerion

Which is stupid when that crap is meant for real issues… then again “gamers + internet.”

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

I hope I can log on again soon. I really want to play it some more.

    • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

I’m on Balmung Legacy and I always get on in 15 mins or less. Try harder, you will make it on.

  • Brandonmkii

I’ve been logged in for 3 days. Never letting go of my spot >:c

    • JuiceKun

Good thing no one else wants to log in to play. ;3

    • EggmaniMN

I really wish people knew how dumb this is. If people like you weren’t assholes about this stuff and just logged out like a normal person, the other people who want to play would probably get a chance and there wouldn’t be so much down time.

It’s so unbelievably dumb to see huge swaths of people in-game just standing still because it’s a bunch of afk asshats who need to leave their game on for 14 hours so they can come back at 8pm or whatever. Get out so the people who want to play can actually play. Not everyone is going to poopsock marathon for 300 hours like an idiot.

      • Yeah. But if we don’t do that we wouldn’t be able to login. I started leaving my character logged in recently because its simply nearly impossible logging in the normal way.

        • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

I log in each day after work. You are always able to get on. Just not immediately. Takes a few mins usually. God forbid you waste a few mins of your life.

          • Vesperion

Yeah that’s great for you, but it actually does take some people a few hours to get on (myself included this past weekend)

          • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Balmung Legacy is one of the most populated, and I always manage to get on. Max time is 15 minutes. Been playing since 12am on the 24th, and every day.

          • Well I guess I’m just unlucky. I’m also from Balmung. I logged in on Saturday and gave up after an hour of trying. I tried again on Sunday and managed to login after 45 minutes. Then my game crashed after an hour when I was running fraps and I had to go at it for an hour. Got bored, went to sleep.

          • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Perhaps it’s SE way of punishing you for not logging out often enough :3

          • Maybe its ping based. I’m really far from the US servers so maybe someone from NA always end up taking the last free space before I can get in. I have noticed that if you wait at the 30 min mark or the 1 hour mark SE temporarily opens the Queue. That’s when people can get in. So its more like SE opens the floodgates to let like 200 to 300 players log in based on how distributed the players are between the areas. If they are too many players on a certain city for example then they don’t allow any logins aimed at those places. How big was the queue when you managed to login?

I tried switching to the japanese servers and creating a character there but its even harder to find a party for the dungeons there unless its Japan timezone peak hours.

Also today morning even the character select servers were full. Whatever maintenance that was supposed to fix the world visibility problems introduced even more problems.

          • Vesperion

Lot’s of the other servers are pretty packed. No matter how popular balmung, or ultros is the guys that can’t get in just fill up the others servers. I play on Midgardsomr. While it isn’t as packed as other it’s still a pain in the ass trying to log in

friday and Saturday were the WORST days yet

          • It’s not the same for everyone. Some of us are in heavily populated servers where it takes hours for us to get in. Even worst when its at hours when people get out of work since everyone gets out at similar hours.

          • Randy Marsh

I love how you people try to justify your means of not logging off, it is so adorable!

          • During the hours I play it takes up to 30 minute to TRY and log in. Luckily I’m playing on the PC using an xbox 360 controller so all I do is constantly press A until I can. As much as I am hammering the server, I kind of do wish to play the game I purchase like every other consumer out there without the need to do this. I’m not saying I do the exact same thing as Falmung but I get his point in all this.

        • EggmaniMN

That’s an absolute lie. If people just logged out when they were done, you’d have a perfectly normal chance of logging in like anyone else. It’s incredibly dumb and selfish.

I played from 1pm today to 6:30pm. I just logged out like a normal human being when I was done. It isn’t hard. You are not more important than anyone else.

          • You probably play on a less populated server than I do. At normal hours it takes around a hour to get in. At weekends? If I get in between two hours I’m lucky. After days of staring at the login screen I’ve found just logging in at 6am and leaving the char logged in far easier than trying for a whole hour logging in.

          • Randy Marsh

What server do you happen to be on?

          • Balmung.

      • Zero_Destiny

Expressing dissatisfaction with their actions, just like others below are doing, is all right, but personal attacks will not be tolerated.

    • Randy Marsh

Enjoy it while you can, Yoshi-P will be coming for your keester!

  • EtherealEarth

I hope the character transfer service is free for the first time.
My friends are all in Tonberry, but it’s closed and I have to play in other server in the meantime :(

  • KyoyaHibari

    Maybe I’ll finally be able to login ;_;

  • Enma_Kozato

    Soon, Balmung. Soon.

  • Alestaos

Im glad they have succeded, but i do wish there were backups in place already kinda like gw2 overflow servers. I think its cause i tried 7 hours on satirday to get in and about the sameon sunday. My connection is fine its just the influx of ppl which is great, but people standing around afking over hours (one player was afk for 3hours the whole linkshell saw), as well as now spam/gil bots taking up space. Very frustrating.

  • AndyLC

I played 1.0 and the 2.0 beta, but I’ve been thinking of just waiting for the PS4 release… but then again XIV also has the goddamn coolest dragoons ever.

    • Ferrick

      hell yeah! Dragoons unite!

      • AndyLC

        >> Dragoons unite!

“Sorry, you need a healer and a tank for this dungeon”

…but if I had my healing breath wyvern

        • Ferrick

psst, now we have healer chocobos ;D

(though if we get a wyvern on the other hand… yeah, that’ll be nice)

      • Haku_Luvs_You

Go away its all about white mage son

    • Ty Austin

      Nah, more like this:

      • AndyLC

and with vanity slots, you can look like you’re wearing subligar even when you have AF stats!

  • This game is really Amazing and Fun!… when I am able to play it. I wish those servers get fixed as soon as posible, so that more game development and player traffic can flow again.

    • Sardorim

I’m gonna get it for the PS4. My computer is old and I don’t feel like upgrading it when I’m already getting a PS4. >_>

  • NintendoPSX

To be fair, it’s even harder for PS3 users who can’t really set macro’s to continuously log them in. On my end though, I’ve been amazingly lucky with my world Adamantoise letting me in with only a half hour or so of fighting with the login.

    • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

You can mash X to try and log in, my friend does that.

  • Kamakuma

Not gonna lie the graphics look pretty darn good overall. I might give it a shot soon… When my backlog of games decreases. t–t

  • Monterossa

We don’t want new worlds, we want you to increase the current worlds’ capacity.

    • Why don’t they do this, increase the worlds and make your first transfer free.

    • They actually are doing this as well. They’re adding more servers to the servers that make up the individual worlds.

  • Razzlero

Because of people complaining about logging in, those of us who got actual faulty copies are being ignored…

    • Faulty copies? there FAULTY copies going around?

      • Razzlero

People who bought digital copies off the EU psn store have a fault where they don’t actually register you with square as owning the game, so we can;t actually get past the registration phase.
I’m not sure if this happened to everyone who bought it off psn in EU, but it definitely happened to a lot of us.
On Thursday they finally acknowledged that the problem exists, but they haven’t given any news about actually fixing it yet. And it’s next to impossible to get in contact with support.

        • Oh wow that’s terrible.

  • Ty Austin

I’m okay with this, assuming SE can have all these issues resolved within 7 days…
