By Ishaan . September 5, 2013 . 3:20pm

WayForward Technologies have released the first trailer for Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, their upcoming Metroid-esque title for the Nintendo 3DS. Pirate’s Curse will give Shantae pirate-themed abilities and is set in a large, interconnected world, where you’ll gradually unlock different areas through items and revisiting them.

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse doesn’t have a release date yet. In addition to this game, WayForward are also developing Shantae: The Half-Genie Hero for PC, current, and next-gen consoles.

Thanks to Siliconera reader Jesus for the heads up!

never knew much of this series until i swe the kickstarter, but i’m loving the visual and 2d metroidvania style! so i cant wait for this be release here. ^.^

    • Krisi92

I finished the first game for the GBC recently, and all I can say, it was fantastic. I can’t wait either!

      • Arcana Wiz

yeah i saw the trailers and gameplay on youtube, i’m really a sucker for 2d side scrollers, and this series looks original while doing it.

        • Krisi92

Absolutely. It’s beautiful, engaging, creative, and fun. You should definitely try it, it’s only 5 bucks on the 3DS eshop.

          • Arcana Wiz

i’ll, but first i have to buy a 3ds, planning on doing it in the end of the year.

      • 7743

The soundtrack was amazing. Glad to see Shantae again.

  • Franggio Hogland

Hmm, so she became white when donning a “white persons” cursed hat?

    • puchinri

Lol, that’s the weird part. She still has her normal skin tone in this entry. x’D

  • greg_67

Its off to a slow start on Kickstarter which makes me think they perhaps should have done their kickstarter after the Mighty No. 9 had ended since that’s what everyone is donating to currently.
Regardless I really hope they get a goal made for the portable systems 3DS/Vita since the series did start out portable in the GBC.

    • Arcana Wiz

yeah, mighty no.9 is where most of people already had donated all their their available money, and Shantae is much more unknow so competing with mighty no.9 isn’t good.

    • Letiumtide

Yeah, they chose a very poor time to have the kickstarter and probably should have held off in light of Mighty no. 9, which is vying for pretty much the exact same crowd of people.

    • Testsubject909

Well. You don’t need to pay the pledge until time’s up. By the time they make us pay I’ll have the money so… Here’s another pledge and here’s me pushing back purchasing a replacement console for another month.

That’s okay. I can confiscate my sister’s console while I wait for my own to either get repaired or replaced at a later time, once I can scrounge up the funds.

    • anarchy_panty

Wayforward has been teasing the Kickstarter long before we knew anything about Mighty No. 9. They can’t just decide to throw out likely 6+ months of planning just because an unrelated Kickstarter took off. I’m totally confident Shantae is going to get funded, but the stretch goals are another matter entirely…

  • The second in the series was greenlit last week or so but there’s really not been much communication about it…

  • Göran Isacson

Oookay, so to clarify things here: is THIS the game they’re now also sending to the PC via Steam, or is this completely divorced from that game? There’s so much Shantae going on with the Greenlight and the Kickstarter and now this that I’m not quite sure what is what. Also the first game is available for download via the Nintendo e-shop, correct?

    • anarchy_panty

I’ll break it down for you:

Shantae, 2002 (GBC, 3DS Virtual Console)
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, 2009 (DSiWare, iOS, and it just got greenlit on Steam)
Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, Winter 2013 (3DS, this is the game this article is about)
Shantae: Half Genie Hero, 2014 (the game the current Kickstarter is going towards)

Hope this helps! The first two released games are well worth your time. Shantae deserves to be way more popular than she currently is.

      • Göran Isacson

That it did! Thanks for the list, will have to check out the series further now.

  • Eduardo Revoredo

Day 1 buy and nothing can change my mind about that.

  • Shantae for the next Smash Bros! She was born and raised in Nintendo handhelds, for crying out loud! It’s really nice that she is now going multiplatform, but she is also one of the deserving 3rd Party characters to be allowed in the Smash Bros series! Who else agrees?

    • British_Otaku

That would be pretty interesting. I see a lot of hype for characters in a single game, just because a big publisher/developer is behind them. I wouldn’t mind Shantae in there.

I’ve lived a life where Sonic and Megaman have at different points shared the spotlight with Mario, Kirby and the crew. Why not?

Now I’ll get back to the GBC game and try to finish it before supporting the Kickstarter later in the month.

    • Ethan_Twain

That is actually an EXCELLENT idea. There has never been a Shantae game not on Nintendo hardware, it would be another female on the mostly male roster, and she would kinda fit in with the overall Nintendo aesthetic way better than some other popular requested characters would.

I think it’ll never happen because Shantae is way too niche and from a North American company, but that doesn’t make it a worse idea.

      • Pyrotek85

More niche than Ice Climbers or Mr Game & Watch though? I think she’d be a great pick for a new character.

  • Happy Gamer

whaaat? I was just looking at half genie hero and then this? happy!

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

ahh the sprite work!! Shantae never go 3D, unless you are in smash bros .

    • Marco Tinè

You know, having her in SB would be an ace idea! Let’s hope Nintendo can consider her as a potential character for the game.

  • NimbusStev

I love all things WayForward and I’m really enjoying Risky’s Revenge (which I just bought last week) but I gotta say it… I really hate the text boxes they use in this game. I let it slide in Risky since it was a DSi/iOS game and I just assumed they went cheap/casual because of the platform or something. But this is a brand new game and they’re still using that awful font with those bland text boxes? Surely they can do better than that.

was she belly dancing with that lamp?
