Konami’s New Los Angeles Studio Brings Kojima Productions To The West

Konami have opened a new Los Angeles development studio, which they say will be instrumental in the development of a number of games, including titles in the Metal Gear Solid series.

During an opening ceremony for the studio, Konami discussed new details regarding Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, with those in attendance, although these details have yet to be publicly shared.

A Kojima Productions team in Los Angeles is involved with the development of both games, Konami have confirmed, with Hideo Kojima providing guidance to the L.A. studio.

“As gaming takes the world stage as one of the greatest forms of entertainment, it’s only natural for us to expand our operations across the globe,” said Hideo Kojima, Director of Kojima Productions. “And since Los Angeles is ground zero for the best studios, facilities and world-class talent, we are leaning on of these local resources to build an incredible team to create gaming experiences that are just as compelling as any film or television show.”

“The Los Angeles studio emphasizes Konami and Kojima Productions commitment to expanding our development footprint,” said Tomoyuki Tsuboi, President of Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. “The new studio will put Kojima Productions in the heart of the west which will benefit future releases as it will introduce new talent and creativity to the development teams.”

Looks really neat, although my favorite game studio facilities are Level 5’s.

Also that Kojima Productions logo on red is way better than the orange one.

  • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Konami what else are you doing besides MGS and Castlevania?

    • TheExile285

      my thoughts EXACTLY lol

    • Leon_Tekashi

Goemon? I mean come on! That series kicks ass as well! D:

    • hazelnut1112

Zone of the Enders sequel maybe?
Maybe he wants this studio to be closer to Del Toro so they can both work on a new Zone of the Enders game.

Konami isn’t going to set this up for a single game that may never even be greenlit.

They’re following the premise that western dev practices are superior and that Americans know their own market the best. So basically, the new studio exists to improve Kojima’s games by injecting western talent into their workflow.

I think Jordan Amaro (Kojima Productions) alluded to this the other day when he criticized Inafune. Something about tough strategic decisions by Japanese companies and the hiring of western developers into Japanese teams. LA is a great spot because it’s a development hub.

      hopefully a new Suikoden

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

        This times a thousand

    • British_Otaku

What I would do for another Boktai or Lunar Knights…
Or some sort of localisation of 3, perhaps in a compilation of the trio.
How will we use a solar sensor? Umm…

  • TheExile285

damn! that is a nice looking studio

  • futuristic_imagination

Nice studio! So a faster localization of their games?

Edit: Yeah, after doing my research, I just realized that the release dates for the games (mainly metal gear) are not that far apart. It makes u appreciate Konami a lot more compared to other companies. “Orz (I should not do my paper and surf the web at the same time.)

    • School Idol Addict

I thought most games from Kajima Production was already released pretty much at the same time everywhere in world ?
So it would be kind of hard to do faster localization.

      • Yeah, uh, what? Kojima games are typically released at the same time worldwide – sometimes they even come to other territories BEFORE Japan.

        • Just Tim

The fact that MGS is bigger outside of Japan actually cements that, no?

    • idrawrobots

      What is your Avatar?

      • Ferrick

        that’s natsu from fairy tail

        • idrawrobots

Thanks, it reminded my of Haruko Haruhara.

  • Arcana Wiz

it’s a great studio! i’ts really beautiful, hell if they gave me the option i would live there!

  • idrawrobots

Were these pictures made with the fox engine? Are we being trolled?

    • Superior Spider-Man

      Kojima: Did you rike it?

  • z_merquise

That’s a nice looking office. Kojima Productions is what keep Konami alive and relevant in the industry nowadays.

Metal Gear series is good and all but I really wanted them to work on other IP. Either new or old. I’m hoping for a new Contra game by Kojima Productions. Also, have them resume Zone of the Enders 3, dammit!

Fox Engine looks really great but personally, I think it would be pretty boring if all they do for that engine are realistic graphics (as good as it may be). Some game that are cartoon or anime-like using that engine would be pretty great.

  • NightzeroAX

    A sexy work area.

  • Scipio

I drive by the Konami distribution office everyday, I never though that they would open a studio, however.

  • I’d be curious to know who’s working at this LA studio, and which other studios they’ve picked up staff from

  • ShadowDivz

    …..Is that a golf course?

  • Heath Bunch

Does Konami even make anything on their own anymore aside from Metal Gear? And even then they had to outsource Rising to Platinum….

    • XiaomuArisu

      Little king Story
The next Castlevania in 2d HD!!!!(I gotta believe!)
      Pro Evolution Soccer
Oh and Rising was a collaboration.

      • Heath Bunch

I believe they only published New Little King’s Story, though I’m not sure. I know the original was developed by Cing.
There hasn’t been a new ZOE since the PS2 era.
If there’s another 2D Castlevania it will probably be outsourced to some western dev.
        PES sucks these days

        • Heath Bunch

But hey, I remembered another one! They did develop Love Plus! XD

  • Judgephoenix

I Demand Metal Gears in the Parking Garage!

  • Tom

Holy sh*t! That is some fancy office. Imagine Konami without Kojima coming up with the first Metal Gear… Yeah, I can’t either.

It would be lovely if they helped some Japanese games to reach western shores…
