Carpe Fulgur Discuss Picking Trails in the Sky SC Up As Their Fourth Project

By Ishaan . September 9, 2013 . 5:40pm

As previously reported, localization studio Carpe Fulgur (Recettear) are translating The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC into English for Xseed, who will be publishing the game in the U.S. for PC and PSP. In a recent update on their website, Carpe Fulgur discuss the origins of the project, which is their fourth to date.

“There have simply been so many moving parts to this particular project, so many interests to align, that speaking of what Project Four was until now was not possible,” writes studio co-founder Andrew Dice.

“In a way, Project Four has not just involved Trails SC; elements of this extend all the way back to the Steam release of Ys: The Oath In Felghana in March of 2012. Though CF did not participate directly in the localization of that game, I, myself, did have a small hand in making that release happen. Getting Felghana, and its siblings, onto Steam to help prove a market even existed for a product like SC was pivotal to the project moving forward. There were so many pitfalls that the project could have faced that announcing it would have been, until very recently, premature.”

Dice continues a few paragraphs later, “Trails is unquestionably our largest project to date; the main scenario alone is larger than the entire script for Recettear.  It is a project that we knew would take an extraordinarily long time to actually finish—a project that we knew many companies had previously rejected for this very reason.”

“Because of our significant, continuing profit and large reserve of assets, we knew that we were in a unique position to work on the game—we could do so without fear for our future, and our time investment would be “wasted” only if the game tanked in a catastrophic fashion—which, between the PC and PSP releases, should not happen.”

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC will be released for PC and PSP in 2014.

I get a fuzzy feeling inside whenever I see more news of this! Thank you Carpe Fulgur!

  • ChiffonCake

    Based CF

  • DesmaX

I only wish the best of luck for them.

Even though I alreay imported the PS3 version of SC and finished it, I’m totally buying it again, no hesitation. If one thing, it only made me want to play it in English even more (I can’t read japanese)

    • wererat42

How do you finish an RPG as text-heavy as the Trails saga unless you at least have enough reading skill to know what the next objective is? Trial and error?

      • DesmaX

    • Slayven19

Yeah how do you do that bro? A guide online or something.

      • DesmaX

Even with Trial and Error, I woudn’t do it. I mean, that part you need to do with Klose…

I found a good guide, it even had a Synopsis for the Story (Gave me more questions than having no explanation, but hey, I appreciate the effort)

Throwing money at the computer screen but nothing is happening….

    • Aristides

lol my keyboard got jammed by doing the exact same thing, it seems to only accept credit card numbers.

    • アティ

<_< Gilgamesh did the same method too….!

      • You might say… he’s performing a Gil Toss?

        • PoweredByHentai

I’ve been throwing extra copies of Recettear, Chantelise and Fortune Summoner every which way on Steam. Huge thanks for putting the games on Steam so that I can throw the games at people. :D

        • Arcana Wiz

          see what you did there.

“Because of our significant, continuing profit and large reserve of assets, we knew that we were in a unique position to work on the game”

Good guy CF. Making good money, takes on difficult, (possibly) low profit project because they can afford to risk it.

    • It is worth pointing out that we aren’t being *stupid* about this, like certain importers were during the anime boom, for example; we’ll never take a project that we don’t think will at least break even.

But on the flip side of the coin, our financial security and low overhead allow us to do things that other groups might find challenging.

      • Ty Austin

Oh i’m definitely not calling you guys stupid or anything! All companies need to make money, after all!

Regardless, you guys are doing something everyone else is afraid to touch, we all really appreciate that!

        • Oh, I didn’t think you were calling us stupid, I just realized that in the context you quoted it in, it sounded a little like an attitude that was prevalent about ten years ago that contributed significantly to several companies going out of business. Rest assured that we are, happily, not QUITE as out of touch as they were. :V

I also recommend taking a look at Robin-post; some nice insight into things

(but seriously, if you have a guess as to what is “The Game”, PLEASE tell me. I’m losing sleep over this D=)

    • bVork

No More Heroes appears to be the likeliest candidate. It’s the right timeframe, hits the right themes, and has a very mixed reputation here.

      • Göran Isacson

I dunno, wasn’t No More Heroes, the english version, still a very vicious satire? It’s pretty much what everyone remembers it to be!

        • Bigabu Beaze

I think its Ar Tonelico 2.

    • NegativeZero

Given the probable 2009 timeframe and the way he dances around the subject (suggesting maybe people he might actually have to work with at some point) I’m guessing it’s Ar Tonelico II. There’s a lot of otaku culture and general satire in there, it has a great story, but the awful localization ruins just about everything, which sucks since it was a game that, if it clicked for you, it really stood out.

      • I’d love a Vita (or even Steam) release of that with a new localization.

      • Göran Isacson

Huh. I read a let’s Play of that game, and I was struck by how the story seemed to have a lot of pretty interesting stuff going on beneath the surface… if the translation was THAT bad that I ended up enjoying what I saw, I would be very interested to know what the original was like

        • Lynx

There’s a re-translation by a fan group in the works.
Google is your friend in this case.

iirc, there was also cut tutorials and the like as well from the English version.

      • Bigabu Beaze

        Yeah I agree with you.

      • 7743

Ar Tonelico II isn’t “insidious satire mercilessly pointing the worst of Japan’s nerd culture”.

    • DesmaX

I guess it’s… the LoH: Gagharv Trilogy?

      • Which one is that?? Not the ones that released on PSP before in English? :P

    • Phoenix_Apollo

I thought maybe Arc Rise Fantasia. Even it released here May of 2010, trailers existed before.

      • Bigabu Beaze

We talked about this on /v. Its prob. Ar Tonelico 2.

        • SeventhEvening

Well, Ar Tonelico did suffer from some pretty terrible and lazy localization, but I have trouble imagining it as a satire, nor does it seem very insidious. It also doesn’t have a very bad reputation in the states.

  • Hinataharem

Well, I wish I could thank them in person, but I’ll do that with my wallet instead.

  • KH1989b

Thank you soo much for bringing this, I hope it sells I will certainly support it.

  • Gosh this is all such good news. I hope we keep seeing dual-releases on PSP/Vita/3DS and Steam. And I hope they do the third chapter as well, and many, many wonderful games after! It would be great if they could do the Zero ones as well, and then Trails in the Flash! But maybe that’s wishful thinking.

  • I forgot what it feels like to have a publisher care what I think

    • No kidding!

    • Well, “publisher”. We’re like the tiniest publisher in the universe. :V

      • Umar Ver 1.OBJECTION

Tiny or not….It makes a HUGE difference to us :)

  • Göran Isacson

Gonna support this man. Gonna put my dollars down and hope, hope HOPE for a continuation. If someone out there actually brings this over, well… I will be very interested to see this series hopefully blossom and grow even in the West.

i still need to finish FC…

    • PoweredByHentai

What are you waiting for? GET TO IT!!!

Also, FC on Steam? You bet I’m going to play through that on my system. :D

the game is too slow pacing to me. 18 hours in and i’m still on the beggining of the second city.

        • PoweredByHentai

I think you’re going about it too slowly. Regardless of what anyone else says, invest in unlocking more slots on your orbment. More slots opened up means more EP to play with.

          • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

I like to do the side quest since the only way to get decent rewards is by doing the bracer requests. and the game pacing that is slow imo. 10 hours for a prologue was too much

          • DesmaX

The whole game is a prologue imo

          • Arcana Wiz

yeah this seires are like a book, the first game is a fourth part of the deries story, in a book it would be the introduction part.

          • Anime10121

The pacing is slow, I can definitely agree there, but the game is LONG and the journey is well worth it my friend :)

Trails is one of ( if not THE) best new ip I’ve played in the last half of this decade. And that’s WITH the cliffhanger ending. Give it time, I promise you’ll be glad you did!

      • I’m personally probably gonna wait till SC is out first, waiting a year for the continuation after a cliffhanger is really not something I want to go through again orz

        • PoweredByHentai

Eh, I just play something else in the meantime.

  • Arcana Wiz

see Tits SC article…. okay give some time to start to read it, i have to wipe my tears off first.

  • mixedfish

Now folks, put your money where your mouth is and buy Trails SC.

  • Umar Ver 1.OBJECTION

TiTs: FC was a game that got me through some of the darkest times in my life….When the I had not an ounce of strength to smile this game made me burst out laughing …. Thanx CF and XSeed :) You guys rock !!!

  • Lester Paredes

Thank you Carpe Fulgur! I will definitely be supporting you when it releases! yay! More TiTS! I love that acronym…

  • 7743

I hope they stay loyal to what’s being said in-game and don’t edit anything out of it.

    • Armane

I don’t think they’ll edit anything out of SC. But they’ll probably make the same changes to TC as Falcom made to the PSP version; as in removing some of Renne’s scenes and dialog.

  • gk2012

Huh, any word on how they’re going to carry over some save related stuff from FC to SC for PC? Or are they planning to release FC for PCs soon?

    • IvanAzure

Xseed will release FC for PC this Winter. :)

      • gk2012

That’s good to know, thanks a lot for the info!

  • Aldorr

MAybe they can pick Third as their new project? :D

  • I’m excited for the fans of the first one getting the chance to finally play this. Also, more RPGs coming to our shores is always a plus. As for me, I didn’t care much for the game so I won’t be getting it.

  • AndreasStalin

So, people just make sure this game doesn’t “tank in a catastrophic fashion” and we should be good to go. I have no words to describe how happy I am that CF actually are doing this. FC is a sweet ride, but its obviously only the first part of something way bigger.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

If more localization companies were as thoughtful as them, perhaps I wouldn’t have had to learn japanese. Stuff like this makes me wait for the localization rather than playing it when I can already.

  • enorka miho

Please someone.. Help XSEED and falcom to localise all of the Legend of Heroes 6 games so that we can get all all of the installments on a per year basis!! I REALLY LOVE LEGEND OF HEROES!!!

  • Yan Zhao

I still want the new PS3 game localized. That one looks beautiful.

    • TheExile285

      1. Buy a Vita TV
      2. Play the game on the big screen
      3. Profit (for XSEED)

  • Tg

I’ll be definitely looking forward to the PSP release!! ^O^ Yaaaaaa!! 2014 is looking to be a good interesting year.
