Xseed “Looking Into” PS3 Version Of Trails in the Sky SC

By Ishaan . September 16, 2013 . 9:45am

Next year, Xseed will publish The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC for PC and PSP in North America. Both versions of the game will be released as downloads, and Xseed have contracted Recettear publisher Carpe Fulgur to translate.

Aside from the game’s PC and PSP versions, Xseed say on their Facebook page that they’re also looking into the PlayStation 3 version of Trails in the Sky SC that was recently released in Japan. An Xseed representative stated, “We’re looking into the PS3 versions, but let’s focus on PC/PSP first.”

Additionally, Xseed say they’re looking into a European release of the game as well.

  • Leon_Tekashi

Make it happen Xseed. The Trails series needs even more love.

  • DesmaX

Well, if they can get Falcom to make a proper job (At least put trophies, geez. I want to platinum this), I don’t mind buying it one more time

    • Леонид Родин

      Ps3 version doesn’t have trophies.

      • DesmaX

That’s what I said. I want them to put trophies in them

        • They would have to. I believe it’s now a requirement by SCEA to do just that when releasing a title on the PS3 into the wild stateside.

          • DesmaX

Oh yeah, it’s been like that since trophies were implemented. That slipped my mind.

Oh well, there is way more work for them besides that

        • Kevadu

Putting trophies in is not as simple as you think.

The PS3 version is a PSP remaster. What does that mean? Basically, Sony Japan created a virtual PSP environment that runs on the PS3. All the libraries, system calls, etc. of the PSP are mapped to functions on the PS3. It’s not emulation because a game still needs to be recompiled for the PS3 architecture, but even so as far as the game logic is concerned it’s running in a PSP environment. And the PSP knows nothing about trophies.

          • DesmaX

Even though it is categorized as a “PSP Remaster” on the console, it stills run like a PS3 game… You can open the XMB normally, something that doesn’t happen with PS1/PS2 Classics.

And anyway, even though it would be a harder job, I believe they should do it. I’m not buying them if it doesn’t have trophies (I’m already buying the PC versions)

          • Kevadu

All PSP remasters run that way. Like I said, they’re not being emulated. The problem is that the game logic still knows nothing about the underlying PS3 environment. They’re living in a little PSP box running on a PS3.

          • DesmaX

Exactly, if it’s running naturally on the PS3, it should be able to acess the console functions, including trophy support.

Of course, it will require some work to implement that in the game, but it can be done

          • Kevadu

Never said it was impossible, I said it was “not as simple as you think”. And I’m sticking to that. There isn’t a single PSP remaster game that has trophy support. While it’s true that SCEJ is less stringent about that sort of thing than SCEA, do you really think nobody in Japan cares about trophies?

This is ultimately a very niche release outside of Japan. It’s a bit unreasonable to expect Xseed (who don’t even have programmers on staff…) to implement something that’s never even been done before for a niche title…

          • DesmaX

Honestly, it is SCEA norm. SCEJ might be more lenient when it comes to these kind of ports, but I don’t think they would let this be released like it (And, hey, Trophy Support isn’t the only problem with these HD versions, anyway)

And, even if SCEA would let them release it like that, putting them on that state would only hurt the IP in the west, because no one would buy a game that doesn’t even fill the whole screen

          • Kevadu

Doesn’t fill the screen? You’re going to have to explain that one. While I’ve never played the PS3 version of Trails, I *have* imported other PSP remaster titles and they most certainly did fill the screen.

          • DesmaX

Yeeeah, it really doesn’t fill the whole screen. And that’s interessing, I’d assume that all of these PSP remasters did that (I only played SC HD from PSP remastered games).

I took a picture some time ago:

You cann see a “Brighter Black” on the screen. That’s the empty space

          • Gaardus

Is it possible that it’s just correcting for overscan when it isn’t needed?

  • Barrylocke89

Something tells me that of the things mentioned in the article, Trails for Europe is most likely. Question for my Eurobros. With Xseeds past games that came out in Europe, did they have multilanguage options, or were they just localized to European standards and released only in English?

I’m not sure what the chances are for PS3 Trails but the big question is on how many people would purchase Trails on the PS3 when we know the PC and PSP versions will be available, and likely coming out in a faster period of time. Especially people who’ll ONLY be able to purchase Trails on the PS3 (ie they have no PSP, Vita, or PC, but they do have a PS3).

Obviously more systems is better for the consumer, but if it doesn’t come out on the PS3, just remember: the Trails games all use a game engine that about 10 years old, and wasn’t very computer intensive even then. Even if your computer has had issues running past modern PC games, there’s a good chance that Trails in the Sky will still run on it because of that. Be sure to look at all of your options before deciding whether or not you have what you need to run this game.

    • XiaomuArisu

Well the EU version of the YS games and the first Trails are in english.Never saw a Falcom game translated in german.

      • Barrylocke89

I see. That’s unfortunate, but at least English-readers will get the game in a more timely manner. As we all know the Trails games have a mammoth script, so keeping the game in English will if nothing else keep the time it takes for the games to come out in other regions down.

        • XiaomuArisu

Yeah.If they would translate it we would to wait 2years longer XD

    • Леонид Родин

English Only. CoD’s engine is much older=)

    • Ladius

Keep in mind that niche jrpgs that are brought to Europe are almost never localized in European languages, they simply keep the English dialogues made for the American version. The exceptions are well known franchises like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, firstsecond party games like Xenoblade, WKC or Lost Odyssey or some bold third party games like Resonance of Fate and Tales of Xillia, among others.

As for the rest, I think there’s definitely an audience for PS3 jrpgs, far more than for PSP ones at least. Of course the PC version is the easiest one to pick up, but lots of jrpg fans prefere home consoles and giving them the option could make them consider supporting the series.

  • XiaomuArisu

Thanks for not forgetting us Europeans.
I cant wait……but I still need to finish the first

  • Sentsuizan_93

Oh good god let it happen Xseed.

  • Masa

Xseed……nice to see someone who cares about us rpgs fans.

  • Shizumasa

Alright. I can wait for the PS3 version if they decide to really do it. Good to hear they also want to release it in Europe too. Gotta wrap up FC first too. Good job.

EDIT: haha, why is there a downvote? Did I say something wrong?

  • Lynx

I’d assume this would actually help them out quite a bit.

The more platforms they could get it out on, the better the end result in terms of exposure would be. At least, that’s how I see it.

  • d19xx

Do it XSeed. This series needs to reach the console audience.

Started playing this game again yesterday, damn so good. Preparing for SC.

  • Yan Zhao

The PS3 version of Trails in the Sky? I want Trails in the Flash as well!

    • doubleO7

One step a a time dude. Lets see of they can finish the current trilogy first before thinking about whats beyond.

      • Yan Zhao

Thats fine and all, is it wrong to state I want the new game as well? I guess all the downvotes means people dont ever want Trails in the Flash localized right? Thats the only interpretation it can mean despite being otherwise.

        • Ladius

The issue is that clamoring for Sen’s release could downplay the relevance and quality of the games between SC and Sen itself, especially in the eyes of those who are new to the franchise, and that would be an issue since all of them are vital to the series’ overarching plot.

Of course no one would like Sen to stay in Japan, it’s just that having it without The 3rd, Zero or Ao would mean being unable to enjoy the references to previous entries and its links with the rest of the franchise.

  • Laith Rem

I dunno, without the first one on PS3 it would feel incomplete. I mean, more power to them if they want to but I don’t see it as necessary, I guess.

    • DesmaX

They’re looking for both versions. Releasing only the second one makes no sense

      • Slayven19

It does if they can’t afford to release the first and the second one. Besides that ps3 got Mass effect 2 without mass effect 1 so these things do happen.

        • DesmaX

ME1 problem was because it was originally published by Microsoft. But EA eventually found a way to release it on the PS3.

And, honestly, if “they can’t afford”, they woudn’t even consider in the first place

  • Kaitsu

    Time to prepare my wallet.

  • Milla

Remember people its a Psp remaster so it wont have trophies.

    • pekikuubik

If you’re playing the Trails series for trophies, you’re doing it wrong. :P

      • Milla

eh im not playing it for that however nayuta, zero and ao no kiseki had ingame trophies.

  • Aldorr

I’d appreciate much more them looking into 3rd chapter… ^)

  • Prungy

I’m fairly certain the only reason that Trails SC wasn’t announced for PS3 alongside PSP and PC is that SCEA wouldn’t approve the PS3 version.

  • Nitraion

Well if they bring PS3 version there is a chance to New just released game…

  • Xseed, you´re turning into one of my favorite companies. So many good games and translations? Dear lord you´re to nice to us.

But please, don´t take on to much so things will end up as it did with Grand Knights Historia. Still wanting to play that game.

    • Lynx

GKH was actually on Vanillaware because of Dragon’s Crown.

    • almostautumn

Wow— totally forgot about GKH. That was actually my first import game where the language barrier devastated me. A bad memory, for myself as a gamer, and for my wallet.

    • Brandonmkii

Really? Still about this? And it wasn’t even Xseed’s fault.

      • Then i´ll excuse myself for having a foggy memory. From what I understood the cost of translating the game was to large for Xseed so they dropped the title.

        Was this wrong information?

        • Brandonmkii

Xseed completed their job, which was translating the game. Vanillaware needed to insert the English script into the game, because Xseed aren’t programmers, just translators. Unfortunately, Vanillaware was way too busy with Dragon’s Crown, and weren’t able to dedicate any resources to GKH, and the project was dropped by them.

          • Then I had missunderstood the whole thing completely. I am sorry.

    • Andar

In the case of GKH, XSEED were the ones who got screwed the most, even more than us potential customers. Think about the resources they put into preparing for a localized release, however far along that might have been, only to end up with nothing.

In general, XSEED has made it pretty clear that they evaluate their projects carefully, likely even moreso after that, and that’s more of why they don’t actually do MORE projects at a time.

      • rekka_zan

It’s a bit funny actually, because we look back a little, XSEED have been doing so many projects simultaneously it’s almost hard to believe.

Just recently, they were doing Rune Factory 4, Killer is Dead, Ys Celceta, Ragnarok Odyssey Ace, Valhalla Knights 3, AND TitS SC at the same time (although SC’s translation is done by Carpe Fulgur).

        • rekka_zan

Oh I forgot to mention Senran Kagura Burst.

    • Arcana Wiz

like many already said Xseed job at GHK is done, Vannilaware have the translation in their hands, it just that they didn’t put in the game… i really wanted that they at least released it on psn, but give the status of VITA here….. *sigh*

  • mixedfish

No worries, I’ll buy them all.

  • Sukhdev

My body is ready for SC.. hopefully it doesn’t take too long into 2014 for the release. I’ll still buy the PS3 version after playing it on PSP if it makes it over to Europe

  • Anime10121

I don’t usually ever do this…. But, you release this on Ps3 and I’ll buy BOTH versions!

  • Robbyfishersora

    That make me happy.

  • Kaitou21

That’s all I have I ever wanted to hear…..*hysterical sobbing*

  • Suriel Cruz

  • Sergio Macellaro

Nice, but only PsP to me.
Bring Tits TC too and Soon!!
    Ao no Kiseki please!!!
    To VITA!!!
That sexy beast need it soooo badddd

  • Bayzid Hussain

I’ll buy it on as many platforms as possible if it can the rest of the series to the west. I absolutely adored the first game.

  • Awesome! Still need to finish the first one, though. Thank you Xseed for remembering us in Europe, too. We all need that Falcom love.

  • dahuuuundge

oh my god, this year has been a good year for Falcom fans.
    Ys Celceta, SC localization announced

  • 永次

I will buy from Japan the PS3 HD ver.

  • Arcana Wiz

If they release it i’ll buy in both versions, and hopes to the first…. actually i think it was best they release the FC ps3 version first to cater new people and release SC later.

  • AndreasStalin

Yes yes EU needs this game badly so its good to know you’re thinking about us too. Just got me FC from PSN so that I can play it on my Vita too, remember its still on sale a couple of days more, at least here in Europe.

  • WyattEpp

    Your Fortune: Godly Luck

  • Margaret Chan

Do it XSEED and I will triple dip into SC

  • Göran Isacson

More trails for EU please. It would make me a very happy little nerd.

  • PS3 versions?

Yeah. I’d buy those, too. Without a doubt.

ESPECIALLY if this means they get yummy special editions, or at least SC, because of how not-dead the PS3 is.

  • KingGunblader

I’d buy an Ouya if you told me that was the only place I could play it. I don’t care where, I just can’t wait for this game!

  • JohnNiles

    What?? *brain explodes*

  • Daniel Segovia

that was old, it was even said on their forum page that they were seeking for the PS3 versions but they would work first on the PSP and PC.

  • Slayven19

This isn’t exactly new news but I’m happy none the less because everyone may not of heard about it.

  • awat

    OUwhhh YES plss q.q ! !!!! ! <3

  • Kai2591

Do they mean the Kai HD version?

  • SageShinigami

A PS3 version??? Well. That will probably be bought on pure principle.

  • artemisthemp

Would be happy for PS3 version, but have a fear of Digital Download only.

  • MK

Seems it’s not going to happen.
