Attack on Titan Game Screenshots Show Off Battles Against Giants

By Ishaan . September 18, 2013 . 11:30am

As reported last night, Spike Chunsoft, the developers of Virtue’s Last Reward, are going to be releasing an Attack on Titan game for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan this December.

The action game will feature multiplayer for up to four players with customizable characters. Meanwhile, Eren, Mikasa and Armin are confirmed as playable characters in the game’s single-player story campaign. Spike say the game is meant to replicate the sensation of speed from the anime series.

This morning, shared a first look at the game with screenshots. Find them below. Attack on Titan will be released on December 5th.

Looks nice…But lets be real. Those are NOT 3DS graphics, just some showcase.

    • ronin4life

They could be… Look at those desolate streets: Not a lot is happening save for the players and Titans. And this looks worse than Kid Icarus and RE:R… and about the same as MH.

So I would say this is in game. Remember: 3ds is a mini Wii.

    • TheGameTagerZ

I agree. They did this with a couple of titles. One that I can name off the bat is Dragon Ball Heroes. Looks worse than advertised.

      • TheGameTagerZ

For the people who disagreed mind telling me why? I’m speaking out of experience. Played a lot of japan only titles on my japanese 3ds like naruto, inazuma, dbz, project x zone etc. To me at least when it isn’t nintendo the graphics quality looks pretty bad (not saying graphics>gameplay of course it’s just something I’ve noticed)

        • J_Joestar

Can’t say about the other games you listed as i haven’t played them, but PxZ’s promo material was pretty accurate to the final game’s graphical quality.

          • TheGameTagerZ

You’re right actually. Just did a comparison now. Guess I can only speak for Naruto DBZ and Inazuma.

    • Lynx

      Could be cutscenes, who knows.

      • Ferofax

MH4 can transition from cutscenes directly into gameplay, as could Kid Icarus. It’s all on the game engine and how it is implemented.

    • MrRobbyM

It’s just the shrunk down screenshots that make it look better. Just about anything will look better shrunk down. It’ll look much more jagged on the 3DS.

      • Heisst

Actually they aren’t shrunk down, they’re 400×240 just like the 3DS resolution.

    • Minos

I don’t think it looks much different from Shin Megami Tensei IV.

But, I am still waithing for gameplay.

    • Sardorim

I can believe that’s 3DS graphics after playing Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. Game looked fantastic!

    • PreyMantis
      • British_Otaku

Revelations looks REALLY good, that’s their MT Framework Portable without going for a stylised look like E.X. Troopers. I was playing the game recently and discovered that there was a Hell mode which whooped me pretty bad, I’ll have to get that game sooner than later.

I would also pitch One Piece Unlimited World Red as really good looking, but I suppose it is too stylised to take on face value and I need it in my hands, not HD trailers which make the PS3 line up of One Piece games look average. >_>

  • Captain Levi

    • DesmaX

  • kassandra

    3ds era is looking good

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

The 3D gear looks a bit ridiculous in the game. It’s like the characters have stomach aches or something when they start flying

  • I wish the color of the sky was darker/more purple like it usually is in the anime

  • Cephrien

Well, we can probably already scratch off any kind of faithfulness to the canon story. Seeing as how Eren is fighting titans as a human (he hasn’t taken out even one titan as a human being yet)

I’m not complaining though, looks awesome. Can’t wait to see it in action.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

lets hope for Shingeki No Gigas DLC

    • zferolie

      Oh god who drew that?

    • Hunts Rattata

      This kills the Trainer.

    • Minos

Te fact the swords are sheathed bothers me more thank it should…

    • Göran Isacson

I can seriously not believe I am the first to go there.

    • Vash bane

that…is genius that person deserve so many cookies

  • RichyGaming

I already knew this was going to happen. I’m not a hater but I really think Attack on Titan is better off on consoles if it’s all about large maps. Which I think is what’s needed if you’re battling a giant.

    • Highasthesky

How can you tell the size of the map?

      • RichyGaming

I can’t tell the size of the map. But I’m assuming that it isn’t going to be very large. I’m just saying because I’ve seen console games having much larger maps than 3DS and vita. The whole thing about maps was just something for me to point out.
Who knows, this probably isn’t even the games final result. Things might be tweaked, a few changes, I don’t know. But I think it’s better off on consoles (And PC I guess?) if we’re talking about fighting giants and running around, jumping like crazy and locking anchors to places, yanking yourself and such to stab the hell out of dem giants, I don’t think a 3DS can pull that off. I’ve yet to see crazy stuff like that happen on handheld. I’ve only seen a few games for handhelds that almost plays crazy like that. KH 3D DDD, God Eater, and Dissidia: FF are one of them.
If it were for example, on Xbox or PS3, I could easily imagine. Because I’ve seen HUUUGE maps dood.

        • If it were for example, on Xbox or PS3, I could easily imagine. Because I’ve seen HUUUGE maps dood.

You assume that the developer wants to spend that much money developing the game in the first place. They don’t.

          • RichyGaming

Of course they don’t want to spend that much money.. nobody does. But well, I’m pretty much repeating myself.

          • Beat

The point is that this is not a very high budget project, so it’s more suited to the 3ds.

        • British_Otaku

Sorry but in my experience, games on powerful consoles just because power have often turned out poorly.

It sounds brilliant on paper right? A game is releasing late in a generation or on a portable, so it should go on the next generation system/console to get more buttons, better interface, more onnectivity
          options and bigger world etc.

Yet every single one of the Dragon Ball line up of games on the PS3/Xbox 360 were poorly balanced, designed and small in scale in comparison to their PS2/PSP/Wii counterparts. Budgets were probably any issue, along with time given how they have a contract to release a game every year. The huge maps in Raging Blast actually worked against the game design in practice too capped off with all of the game mechanics being scaled down.

The 3DS is capable of more than you think it is, if the GameCube/PS2/Xbox brought us an open world
Spiderman with realistic tether points and physics which even AoT browser fan games can pull off, it’s well in the reach of this game if they know what they are doing. Add E.X Troopers and Gundam vs Gundam to your list also. >_>

In time, we may see a console HD AoT game which matches your expectations (or not given how it is much cheaper to do visual novels, mobile, social and portable games), but at this point it only makes sense to accept this one and hope the next one
is better no matter where it releases.

        • PreyMantis

You think? I guess you’ve never seen The Amazing Spiderman on the 3DS. It’s an huge open world map with big boss fights and have you clinging to things with your web (kinda like AoT, except with webs). Here’s proof:

          • RichyGaming

Never heard of it, but you got me.

  • InfectedAI

I hope it gets localized. Hopefully multiplayer is local and online.

  • Teepo 64

I wonder if picking Mikasa during the character select screen will automatically lead you to the game’s ending followed by the closing credits.

  • Arcana Wiz

yeah it looks better than i expected, but i wanted more chracters….. like doing a speed run with annie ;D

    • British_Otaku

Looks like we might have to wait for the sequel on that one… The fourth volume made her so interesting, I would like to have other characters as options after the game is finished even if the story mode isn’t designed around them like Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure (you could play through the game as more or less any character in the game like bosses, or a flying camera with gun or a wolf or generic guys with guns).

  • Sardorim

Hmm.. Will I get to see Mikasa’s glorious abs in HD?

    • Dragard Kaos

Seeing as the 3DS doesn’t display HD, nope.

    • Ferofax

      Mikasa’s glorious behind…

  • The fan art is amusing, I must say. ANYWAY, let’s hope that it comes to the states so I can play The Human Gummi Bear game.

  • J_Joestar

    *looks at pics*
    Bert but no Reiner?

    • Beat

Yeah can you not with the spoilers please? Rude.

      • 657rod

Everyone knows already, it’s pretty obvious actually. And pointing that it is a spoiler makes it more obvious.

      • Ninastars

Well unless you know what it’s about you wouldn’t see that as a spoiler, so actually stating it’s one is kinda worse.

      • J_Joestar

Really? All my friends who just watch the anime told me they just revealed who the identity of the titan already, I only read the manga so i don’t really know how far the anime is at.

  • Enma_Kozato

    “Yeager” *cringe*

    • Beat

I really dislike that official name.

    • British_Otaku

It seems to be the spelling in the Kodansha English manga that I’ve read for five volumes, even if I’ll agree that some official translations are stupid, I can’t relate your opinion without you saying what the original pronunciation, katakana or what you saw or heard in general…

I’ll assume that I’m out of the loop based on Beat’s response and your four likes… >_>

      • Enma_Kozato

I have the volumes of Titan from Kodansha as well, so yeah, I know they use Yeager. It just irks me because Titan blatantly takes place in an European setting; you can see it in the architecture, the culture (clothing, names, goverment), the everyday objects they interact with. It makes more sense for Eren’s last name to be spelled Yaegar or Jäger, meaning “Hunter” in German. Granted, Yeager is the Americanized verision of the name/word, and Isayama confirmed it’s the correct spelling, so it’s just a visual aesthetic for me.

        • British_Otaku

I see. Given that it isn’t a first name, I haven’t even seen anyone use those alternatives (maybe because Yaegar looks too similar as well) but I can follow how those names make more sense even if it is incorrect according to Isayama, Japanese media and English localised media (maybe the German localisation uses “Jäger”). :/

Thanks for the well clarified response.

  • Graphics look better than I expected.

  • Spider-Man

I swear I’m going to rip someone’s entrails out if this doesn’t get localized. Region locking has kept the 3DS from being the perfect handheld, at least for me.

Nice to see my bro, smiling Titan in the game though. He is best Titan after all.

  • Göran Isacson

Fairly muddy-looking textures on the ground and houses, but I do like how the giant Titan looks… then again he may have classier textures since he may just appear in cutscenes. Also graphical sparseness may be so that they can amp up the speed of the game… at least, in an ideal world.

  • Interesting! Too bad I don’t have a 3ds in japan, unless you buy the Gateway to by pass it I think.

  • Zeether

Too bad this won’t come out here because anime/manga games that aren’t called Naruto or DBZ don’t sell for peanuts.

    • British_Otaku

I think there is a bit of a chance here. It’s on a platform that sells well everywhere (more so when Pokemon hits everywhere on October 24th) and the source material is a massive hit both in Japan and overseas, it’s probably the fastest localisation announcement for an anime I’ve ever heard of and the community projects from designs on Minecraft to fan games to real 3D movement tech to just funny images on forums have been off the charts.

If I were the publisher, I would wait till the game is proven to be decent enough to market to fans well (word spreads fast, a good number of people didn’t want Time and Eternity before it came out – people will know this is bad quickly) and when FUNimation and Kodansha are both pushing releasing stuff.

    • J_Joestar

well the new Jojo game is coming over so never say never!

  • Protosin

I think I might actually get this.

  • ShootThatWay

So, if I play as Eren do I get to transform? ;D

Anyways, I was hoping for character creation so I could be a nobody serving under captain Levi and become titan food.
But since you role play as the 3 main characters, I’m forced not to get eaten, unless I’m playing the *Cough*person I mentioned in sentence numero uno*Cough*.

  • Ferofax

They should make a Face Raider-like mode where you take a snapshot of your face and they wrap it around a titan’s head… I mean, that’s what they look like, right? Everyday people with blank or retarded expressions…

That would be so funny, getting eaten by a Titan that looks like Samuel L. Jackson.
