Tactics Ogre Creator Yasumi Matsuno Working On New RPG Unsung Story

By Ishaan . September 19, 2013 . 6:30pm

Tactics Ogre and Vagrant Story creator Yasumi Matsuno is working on a new strategy role-playing game for “a variety of digital devices,” titled Unsung Story.

Actually, make that two games. Unsung Story is being developed as two separate titles, in collaboration with the developer named Playdek, who develop hobby and tabletop games. The first game is Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians, which is the aforementioned strategy RPG.

Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians will take place in the fantasy world Rasfalia that has been through half a century of war. As you play the game, you’ll discover tales of heroic deeds and the root of legends that were told in the aftermath of the war.

“I’m pleased to be creating this amazing world and rich story exclusively for Playdek,” said Yasumi Matsuno. “It’s exciting to develop my vision with the leading company of the genre. I look forward to bringing this new world to life and reaching a new audience of avid gamers.”

The second Unsung Story game will be a card game for digital devices and will be co-designed by Christophe Boelinger, who is a renowned board game designer from France. The game will pit two players against one another in battle.

Both Unsung Story games will allow for both offline and online play. The card game will be released at some point in 2014, with the RPG to follow at a later point in time.

No platforms specified for the SRPG?
I guess they want to focus on getting the card game out of the way first.

  • Solomon_Kano

A variety of digital platforms, eh? So not just smartphones, which is nice.

    • yomachaser

      Yup….also tablets. :)

Oh man, a new game from Matsuno! Yeah!

…but that “digital devices” part worries me. Well, I’ll wait until more information’s out before I actually start freaking out.

    • AnimusVox

      Keep hope alive, my friend.

  • Sardorim

That guys helmet reminds me of Berserk.

    • FetusZero

Reminds me of Lenneth.. man I wish there would of been a proper third instalment of Valkyrie Profile on PS3 instead of Covenant of the Plume.. it still hurts me a little :/

      • Ferofax

The game font somehow screams Nordic to me.

    • Christopher Nunes

Then I’m glad I don’t read/watch Berserk… heard how dark and messed up it is.

And I’m not fond of these kind of stories.

      • Sardorim

        You made a wise choice.

After all these years I’m still waiting on closure. =*(

        • Christopher Nunes

It’s STILL going on? I don’t really understand the appeal of dark fantasy as that?

Honestly thought Akame ga Kira was something else and then… every since one of my favorite characters died (who only had like 9 or less chapters of coverage) and in a horrible manner as well (didn’t read it but heard what happen and my heart actually SANK! I mean it really got to me like hearing about a loved one just died).

It’s less dark than Berserk as I’ve heard but it’s still as bad. I hope SE’s manga ends with the bad guys dying because I just hate that… sometimes I wish I had ultimate super powers, hop into the manga world, and save the good guys and wipe out the bad guys without no worry and save my favorite characters.

I guess I just prefer the DBZ way of handling death and the resurrections, I prefer more happy endings with the good guys living and maybe some bad guys living as well like Vegeta re-forming into a better person.

    Please be on 3DS

    • Please. PLEASE.

    • デ オオカミ

I support this motion with my entire body.

  • Luis Camargo

I came here praying for “not iOS or Android. not iOS or Android.

Will keep on hoping, want the RPG on the 3DS or Vita.

    • Learii

      I am with you

    • Morricane

Yeah but “a variety of digital devices” does almost certainly mean “smartphones 100% and mayyyyybe something else”…-_-

  • Arcana Wiz

    seens interesting.

  • Bur

I think I woke all the neighborhood dogs with my squeal. Whatever it is, if it’s Matsuno I will buy it.

  • Exkaiser

An Android/iOS card game might not be so bad with some real talent on board- board game talent, that is!

As for the SRPG, I am so filled with interest it’s almost unbecoming.

  • new_tradition

I’ll keep my eye out for the SRPG version

  • Ethan_Twain

I am in. And I’m probably in for the card game too. I’ve never before tried a digital card game, but this seems like the perfect opportunity for me to try. Even if it doesn’t turn out to be quite my flavor of game, I’ll have gotten my first taste of this universe early :)

  • Yause

So far, Playdek has only released iOS games. Maybe they’ll expand into Android?

  • Kevin Schwarz

What’s with all the Iphone games in Japan lately?! Are they so sick of consoles and handhelds that they want to go with that….

    • Lower development cost + potential higher profit margins + large user base = What’s wrong with that?

They’re a business, like many others, trying to keep shareholders happy and improve their standing in the games’ market. Also the article doesn’t explicitly say its only for smartphones.

  • AnimusVox

Oh my glob. I love this gentlemen’s work.
    Can’t wait.

  • Silent

    Is this Lenneth’s husband?

  • Zarathos No Daimaōh

Sigh , in a better world , the man would be leading Square Enix or at least one of its studios

    • …where they would still be making him work on mobile games.

      • Zarathos No Daimaōh

At least after pumping out more awesome games on home and handheld consoles . And who knows ? Maybe they wouldnt be in such a bad financial shape that they shameless pump mobile stuff to the current level

  • Neophoton

Will be expecting it on mobile devices with some sort of hope for 3DS or Vita. Otherwise, happy to see Matsuno with some work.

  • Göran Isacson

More interested in the SRPG than the card game, but I am still interested. Now we wait for the formats it will release too.
