Final Fantasy VI Coming To Smartphones This Winter

By Ishaan . October 9, 2013 . 12:36pm

Final Fantasy VI is coming to iOS and Android devices this winter, Square Enix have revealed to Kotaku. The smartphone version won’t be a direct port of Final Fantasy VI, but will instead be an enhanced version, similar to the recent Final Fantasy V release.

Like Final Fantasy V, while the smartphone port of VI will still feature the same 2D visuals as the original game, they will be sharpened for their smartphone release.

Other enhancements made to the game will include adjustments to the battle system so that less grinding is required than before.

Additionally, Square Enix producer Takashi Tokita hopes that the company will be able to bring Final Fantasy VII to phones one day as well.

“We are aware that we have tons of VII fans,” Tokita shared. “We have VII fans in our own company. If this Legacy project works out well, we would like to one day be able to work with VII.”

Thanks to Siilconera reader malek86 for the heads up!

  • Surgeon of Death

As much as I hate this wave of mobile “gaming”………SOLD.

  • Xaltmas

Please, please don’t look as bad as Final Fantasy V did.

    • Chaos_Knight

FFV looked good to me. :/

      • Hraesvelgr

When you can see where the tiles end and the next tile begins, it’s pretty bad. It’s especially bad when it’s coming from a company like Square Enix. Their games shouldn’t be looking like bad RPG Maker knockoffs.

      • The iOs version looked like crap.

I can see why they decided to keep the aesthetic for VI.

  • Zero_Destiny

Sounds pretty sweet to me. Final Fantasy V on iOS was a great improvement to Dimensions with a much better UI, and touch friendlier interface. The gameplay worked pretty well with no buttons.

Hopefully they’ll take what they learned from V and VI will have even better controls so the hectic bosses won’t be a problem, those were the only real cumbersome moments with the Touch interface. Hoping for some nice portraits to be in the game again like with V as well.

VII would be great too, and with that, almost complete its domination of mobile platforms. xD Both PSP, PSV, and then iOS and Droid, and then factor in PC, PS3, PS1, and PS2, VII can’t be stopped! lol

    • Rogerrmark

      V for Android/iOS is the best version,despite

Looking forward to FFVI as well, although I wish they’d reballance the Magicite system.
The GBA audio was kinda bad, just hope they use the SNES soundtrack.

  • kylehyde

I guess they read only half of the message about a FFVII remake and they omitted the part that stated very clearly the we want it for home consoles

  • Barrylocke89

It’s certainly not a bad choice to go on iOS, but FFV iOS had sprites that looked kinda garbage-y to me. Plus the Amano art portraits really clashed with the sprite-style.

I guess with this, one can play FF1-6 on iOS…And DQ1-8 on iOS soon. I suppose we’ll be seeing FF7-9, and maybe even 10 on iOS someday soon.

EDIT: What if FFVI looked like how All the Bravest looks graphically. Yeah the game was a steaming turd but at least it got the looks of SNES games down. If FFVI looks like that, then I’d feel better about this development.

EDIT2: I just read again and I see the part about adjustments so that there’s less grinding needed. FFVI isn’t the hardest game on the block though…

Please let whatever easy mode things you want to do be an OPTION and not the new game. And if you go the Tales of Vesperia way of pay-to-level so help me…

In short Squeenix, it’s not hard to mess this up. Release the game in it’s glory so phone owners get a nostalgia trip. No gauging, no haphazard “improvements”, even the premium price is acceptable because the game costs about as much on other systems. Just. Don’t. Blow it. Thank you.

  • Pedro Furtado

I hate grinding but I never had an issue with FFVI, I think

    • yomachaser

Did you prep any characters for optional stuff like the arena challenges? Hell yeah you need a bit of grinding.

  • Morricane

Huh, you needed to grind in FFVI??

    • yomachaser

If you wanted to learn dope skills from summons like raiden then yeah there was grinding ap to make your dream party/character.

I can’t wait to rebuild my invincible floating celes.

      • Morricane

Well yeah, but that’s far from necessary.
But attacking good old Kefka with Illumina+Atma Weapon+GenjiGlove+Offering on a Lvl99 chara and seeing him go poof with just one command was kinda funny. Just in retrospect not worth the amount of time needed to grind that high :)

        • yomachaser

Sir I call that the definition of necessary!

        • CruelAngel

I kind of used Vanish+Doom. … or at least most of the time, not sure if Kefka could be vanished.

  • Junko Enoshima

Since VI is my second favorite game in the series (sorry, but NOTHING touches FFIX), I’ll buy this. At ANY price.

    • SMT

If they make an updated port of IX that reduces loading times…
Dear mother of god that would be PERFECT. Best FF ever, indeed VI is also my second favorite after IX. X is probably in third place, unless we’re counting Tactics, in which case I can’t really decide.

And as I read your comment I imagined Junko enjoying the DELICIOUS DESPAIR of the anti-mobile users.

      • Morricane

I never could bring myself to see FFT as a FF…it’s just Tactics Ogre with chocobos (…and chocobo meteors…lots of chocobo meteors…-___-)

        • SMT

It’s very different, which is why I too wasn’t sure if it “counts”… but it’s incredible so I really like it (And Tactics Ogre, naturally). As appropriate for Matsuno (Ignoring FFXII), the story is incredible.

          • Morricane

Well, at least FFXII gave us probably the best Han Solo clone in gaming (and thus, kinda…the sexiest…errr….Chewbacca?) :D

  • DrakeClawfang
    • DrakeClawfang

lawl, so much hate just for a video.

      • CirnoLakes

I think My Little Pony might have an effect.
But if I could guess, more than anything, it’s because many people’s reaction to this news is the opposite of an ecstatic “yes”.

        • DrakeClawfang

Perhaps, but I’m looking at the upside of this news. I’d prefer this to be for PSP or 3DS, but at least the enhanced remake FF6 needs is coming. And I would not put it beyond SE to port the game, they port everything else eventually.

  • CirnoLakes

I can just feel the internet exploding right now.

    • Not yet. Wait until VII happens.

      *rubs hands together*

      • Sometimes, I get the impression that you’re kinda evil.

        • Sometimes?

        • Herok♞

          Nah Ishaan is a Saint

      • We already got that on the NES, remember?

      • malek86

Wait until Persona 5 is a mobile game.

        • You know, I’m really surprised Persona 3 Portable isn’t on any kind of smartphone yet. It would work perfectly. P3P’s UI on the PSP is perfect for touch screens, even though the PSP itself didn’t have one. Wasted opportunity, imo.

          • malek86

Atlus doesn’t seem that keen to put any actual effort in their mobile games yet. That, and they probably don’t want to do something that can’t be F2P.

Maybe things will change with Sega.

      • Demeanor

My thoughts exactly, after VI comes VII. What are you gonna do, Squeenix? Are you aware that a VII remake could be awesome even without FFXIII-tier graphics?

  • Magnumsally

Square, I give up. I was a 25 year customer. You just lost one. I know you guys have a thing for quick and dirty ( and mostly bad) ios ports, because you cant figure out how to make money anymore but this is insane

  • ivanchu77

    • I’m using this at some point.

  • KingGunblader

Did people find FFVI grindy back in the day? Wasn’t really an issue for me. Anyway, this is probably the first FF game I’ll buy on mobile.

    • epy

No, it would only be grindy if you wanted to learn all spells with all characters or something.

      • Morricane

Or go up to Lvl99 with all characters………..

    • Hound

It could get “grindy” if you wanted all of Gau’s dances, every esper spell, and were willing to deal with the heavy encounter rates in the many optional areas (provided you didn’t use any tricks to level quick.)

If you’re fine with completing the game while just getting the most useful spells, then no, not at all.

  • Shane Guidaboni

    I don’t….UGH!

  • epy

Last gen, this would have been a full blown remake on the most popular handheld. Now, a barebones port with those awful Dimension sprites. Yep, mobile is the way of the future!

    • DrakeClawfang

I’m less concerned with the platform and more with the quality of the games themselves. They can release games for the Sega Game Gear for all I care solong as the games are worth playing.

      • epy

What I meant is that before, real effort and resources were put into remakes and rereleases. Now they can get away with stuff like this. When they remade FFIV for the DS, I kept thinking “I can’t wait for the remakes for FFV and FFVI”. Years after, THIS is what we get.

Look at the After Years remake for iOS. Do I wish it was out for the 3DS? Yes. Did they cut corners (lack of voice acting for one)? Yes. Do I Still want to play it? Yes! Some effort went into that at least.

        • DrakeClawfang

A silly statement, this will have effort put into it too. They’ll have to make all new sprites from the ground up.

          • epy

Effort? Like with FFV you mean? A silly statement, indeed.

        • Hound

I was personally hoping that an enhanced port of FFVI would try to match the art style of the game’s character portraits, enhance the monster images/animation, etc & have painted 2D scenery that would make Legend of Mana jealous.

But that was over 10 years ago. I’ve long since given up hope on SquareEnix’s artistic passion for 2D games.

    • yomachaser

Last gen they pretty randomly re-released or made a poly version or made new sprites and this gen seems the same so bzzzt.

Also Dimensions looks great IMO and shitting on it’s different art style is lame.

      • That’s because we would’ve liked the original graphics even though all the characters looked the same, including the hair style when the length wouldn’t match certain characters but kept their color schemes. People would still complain about the graphics regardless.

  • Herok♞

This is most likely the GBA version moved to phones so I see no problem with it.

    • Ladius

No, it seems it’s a 2D remake in the vein of what they did with FF5 iOS.

  • chibiwall

  • Max

Whatever happened with the discussions back in 2010 about remaking FFV and VI for the 3DS?

  • If they do have new sprites, Terra needs to be blonde and Celes needs her yellow outfit instead of the swimsuit and cape.

    • komiko12

I don’t know… I prefer blonde Terra and yellow-outfit Celes myself but more people seem to like the in-game ones.

It’s like the case when blonde Faris in Theatrhythm 3DS became violet-haired in the iOS version.

      • I was a little disappointed that Lenna and Faris kept their luminescent hair colors in FFV. People are just used to their in-game sprites and I’ve come to be a classic Amano-era Final Fantasy fan because we don’t have the issue of low-res sprites to confuse us. If there are new graphics, I also hope to know just what some of the bizarre monsters are that haven’t reappeared in Dimensions. Final Fantasy is a divisive series after all. I myself would prefer the classic graphics over the RPG Maker-like graphics.

    • epy

NO! Terra’s hair must be green! It’s the way it’s meant to be! What? Amano’s original design for Terra is blonde you say? Amano makes all female characters blonde! It doesn’t count!

      • kylehyde

like tim burton, or least most of their heroines are blonde

    • Ixbran

how about make it so fans have the option to chose between Amano style pixels, and enhanced versions of the original pixels?

that way everyone can be happy

  • komiko12

    Less grinding required?

I think the grinding in FF6 was good enough. You can even make low-level runs if you don’t want grinding. One can argue that the characters in FF6 were OP.

  • Aitor Gonzalez

Instead of bringing FFVII to phones, why not remake or even reboot the game for the PS3/PS4!?

  • Randy Marsh

I’m all for this remake; since I’m not a pessimistic child that nags like it’s the end of the world, but please, PLEASE, remake the soundtrack! I enjoyed FFV for the Android; yes I did deal with it, but using the old GBA soundtrack kind of sucked.

  • Nanashrew

Ya know… I understand the business decisions for mobile and that it’s an ever growing market and that’s where the money is but it doesn’t mean you should solely rely on it though. Because it’s an ever changing market people move on to the next trend incredibly fast while the dedicated have, well, dedicated systems and they will always be the loyal ones. There are two mobile markets, the dedicated handhelds and phones/tablets.

  • Happy Gamer

I wonder if it would be possible to make 2d design to look like amano’s art. Would be pretty cool

  • Heropon

    nothing special . FF7 ,8 ,9 IOS coming soon

  • It’s cool they are keeping the original aesthetics with enhancements and everything but

  • soup or man

Lame. I’ll buy it if it gets ported to Vita or maybe even 3DS. Don’t want games for my phone.

  • new_tradition

    So that’s it. My dream of a FFVI remake is over ;A;

  • Robbyfishersora

…And in the whole putting their games in phones continue.

  • Dark Zerato

Waiting for the day SE bring Lightning to phones. They should at least consider FF VII remake for PS4 before port it to phones.

  • AndreasStalin

The more I think about this, the more I want a really big budget PS4 type remake of Final Fantasy VI. I don’t know if Square Enix even know what kind of epic gem they are sitting on here. In my book one of the top ten games ever made and it gets a smartphone port! Its like publishing The Lord of the Rings as a 4-koma, sure it would be kind of awkwardly fun, but what this game really needs is something grand, something big, fully realized with next gen production values.

So S-E if you really want to pour millions into one game remake of yours this is the one!

(Hopefully all the money they make from this IOS “enhanced” version goes towards making that grand epic Playstation 4 /w remote play on the Vita real remake….please).

    • DrakeClawfang

The problem is that it’s only a gem as far as North American audiences are concerned. FF6 never saw a SNES release in Europe and its Japanese fanbase is nowhere near as large as in NA – a Famitsu poll of the Top 100 games of all time saw VI at #25, outscored by all other main series Final Fantasy titles save for XII, I and II.

So in perspective, a full home console 3D remake of FF6 would be a financially poor business decision compared to FFX or FF7, and sure enough, look at FFX.

      • Michael Mario

Ouch… That would explain VI’s poor treatment in the past. Still, while I understand it’s an Japanese company first (and agree a home console remake is out of the picture even if it wasn’t unpopular), …Square- you do business on an international scale. Take that into consideration as you use Lightning- a good character, but a poor fanservice character- into revealing and cute outfits and give us a lower quality remake than VI’s core audience wants (especially given it’ll be on devices nearly everyone overhear has). Cultural barriers- I get that, but still.

Let’s hope they port it, or give us another remake in the future specifically for the 3DS (wishful thinking, but the 3D is perfect for the original’s Mode 7 effects) along with perhaps V.

Edit: I like Lightning, but her design is meant to be cool- not drop-dead sexy or incredibly adorable (the latter being more suited for Terra, actually).

        • DrakeClawfang

I agree. They’ve said they want to look into more NA-focused games if I recall, and FF6 would be the place to start.

Also agreed on Lightning, she’s attractive, but she’s not supposed to be the sexy symbol they’re trying to turn her into, it’s like sexualizing Celes or Ashe, it’s destructive to a dignified character. And yes, Terra is beautiful in an adorable way <3

          • Michael Mario

Keep in mind, this is the same company that gave us Mystic Quest because they thought FFV was “too hard for western gamers”; not the best history right there. I’m guessing they don’t count any installments in their flagship franchise “NA-focused games”… or rather, they don’t want to. That seems to be the mentality there, and it needs to change.

Yeah, they’re so fixed on trying to “redeem Lightning’s character”, but they don’t seem to actually be addressing what people didn’t like. Instead, they’re more interested in making her look more attractive so those same people will ignore their grievances since they’d have something pretty to look at… *sigh* like the bust-size increase. Let’s see how Lightning Returns does first.

So many of these cute costumes would look worlds better on Terra :3… we need a fan artist willing to bring that to life: fast.

      • AndreasStalin

Yeah that might be true. But assuming that you have played and finished FFVI, you know what I’m talking about, right?

Think about how Final Fantasy VI could be remade, the opera scene and the moogle battles and and and…there is just so much going on in this game!

And I’m not talking about a HD remake like FFX/X-II or anything like that. I’m talking about a full blown total re-imagination of the game, keeping the characters and the story and anything important like battle system and such
but upgrading anything else to PS4 standards, graphics/music etc. etc. Go full orchestra on everything.

Think of it as a completely new Final Fantasy only its really
Final Fantasy VI in some brand new well-fitting clothes.

Yes I think that would be fantastic. The art style and the world and the characters in that game is just so brilliant it
deserves to be giving a next-gen remake. Even though I
also love the style of the original SNES version I still want to see it as a fully realized 3d world.

        • DrakeClawfang

it would be fantastic, yes. But the huge investment of time, money and manpower in a project of that level would have to be justified by the prospective returns they would get. That’s just business, investment of resources has to be worth it. FF6, I just don’t think SE sees it there. I think it’s there, but they likely do not. Really, they would be much more likely to remake FF7 first because even if they’re hesitant to the idea, they have to know a FF7 remake would sell even if it was shitty.

      • Steve Raineault

Uhm, no, if they marketed it properly in Japan it would most likely sell. Its similar to how Dragon Quest sells in the West when its actually marketed.

        • DrakeClawfang

oh, it would sell, but it would not be as safe an investment as the games with the larger fanbases

  • Jason Unkefer

When is it out? Someone give me a date?
