Are Game Freak Teasing Remakes Of Pokémon Ruby And Sapphire?

By Ishaan . October 16, 2013 . 9:00am

Game Freak have already developed remakes of Pokémon Red/Blue and Pokémon Gold/Silver, but they haven’t gotten around to doing remakes of Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire yet. Last year was the two games’ 10th anniversary, and to mark the occasion, Game Freak distributed their mascot legendaries, Kyogre and Groudon, to Pokémon Black 2/White 2 players.

While the Wi-Fi distribution was a nice gesture, those remakes may actually be very heavily under consideration. Kotaku came across a Twitter account that has been collecting a list of teases and references to Ruby/Sapphire in the recently released Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. Here’s a look at a few of them:

And those are just a few of the Ruby/Sapphire references you’ll come across in the game. Game Freak aren’t oblivious. They knew exactly how people would perceive these references, and yet, they chose to put them in anyway. In my book, that has to mean something. And hey, the very first Wi-Fi distribution for Pokémon X and Pokémon Y just so happens to be for a Torchic—one of the starters from Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire. At this rate, I’d almost expect Blaziken to be the next Super Smash Bros. reveal.

It isn’t as though Pokémon remakes sell badly either. Nintendo revealed yesterday that Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen and Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver have both sold in the vicinity of 12 million copies each.

I really hope they’re planning on remaking the 3rd Gen games. But after giving it some thought, who’s to say these “hints” aren’t just the localization team having fun?

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

The localization team is The Pokémon Company International. They wouldn’t do anything this crazy that wasn’t already in the games, or that wasn’t approved by Game Freak.

  • Audie Bakerson

There’s a sect of the Pokemon fanbase that insists EVERYTHING is a sign of Hoenn remakes.

There’s references to every past region in XY

Your Joseph avvie made the comment even better.

    • http://linkapics.tumblr.com/ Linka

Yeah I was gonna say. There’s even a reference to a Hiker from BW who liked Ferris Wheels. XD

      • Draparde

        There’s also statues of the B/W legendary’s in X/Y :x

        • http://linkapics.tumblr.com/ Linka

Yeah. Which by the way, those are some awesome looking statues!

      • MyBodyIsReady

Also there’s the kid who likes shorts because they’re comfy and easy to wear, there’s also the the guy with the 6 Magikarp and I spoke to some guy in a Pokemon Centre who hinted at Gamefreaks other game HarmoKnight

    • Keksus

Yes. And it’s stupid. In every Pokémon game are references to the old regions. In X and Y you have not only references to Hoenn, but also to Unova, Kanto, Johto and Sinnoh. So I guees a Gen 5 Remake is confirmed then?

  • samsneeze

Game Freak is a single company.

  • Armane

At least with Gen 3 remakes they couldn’t ruin/exclude any of the trainer designs, right?

  • artemisthemp

What about remaking Yellow – The best of the Pokemon games?

    • Guest

It would be cool to see a remake of Yellow on 3DS

      • Steven Higgins

Not gonna happen. Yellow was the Crystal of Gen I and they just added the stuff from Crystal into HG/SS.

        • Ferofax

You got it backwards. Crystal is the Yellow of Gen II. You refer something from the one that was first, not the other way around. In that regard, the next was Emerald, then Platinum.

          And then there was none.

          • Steven Higgins

            The result is the same.

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

no one want a remake of ash adventure

Ruby was my first Pokemon game, it’ll be great to revisit Hoenn!
    I hope it’s true :D

  • echokanon

    Need more trumpets

  • Xaltmas

Emerald is still my favorite Pokemon game. I’d be all over Ruby/Sapphire remakes like nobody’s business.

I’m sure it’ll happen, it’s only a matter of time.

    • Demandred

Because I enjoyed Emerald so much, I wouldn’t like a Ruby/Sapphire remake. It would feel incomplete by comparison.

Now, if they were to revisit Hoenn in B2W2 fashion then I’d be all for that.

      • Xaltmas

If Ruby and Sapphire were remade, I’d imagine they’d include the content from Emerald, just like Soul Silver and Heart Gold had the content from Crystal.

    • Steven Higgins

Emerald. The only enhanced Pokemon game I never go to play…

  • Grape Monet

The Backpacker is the only one that seems to be teasing something instead of just referencing the games, and besides that every other generation gets their fair share of references in XY, too. But if he’s teasing the Battle Frontier, that might be a teaser for a potential third game/sequel to XY that has the Frontier, not just the remakes.

Side note: With the weather abilities changed from perpetual weather to only lasting five turns, that would make the battles against Groudon and Kyogre easier than they should be, as well as removing the in-game reason why Hoenn is covered in perpetual rain/heat when they awaken. I don’t know if they’ll be willing to reconcile that in a remake.

    • Armane

Battle mechanics don’t really matter to the in-game story. They didn’t explain it as being a result of their ability either.

They could surprise everyone and make a Ruby 2 & Sapphire 2. After all Gen 6 is set several years after Gen 3.

  • Shady Shariest

    Well…This might be interesting…
    Just wondering about the names.

  • AuraGuyChris

Following this logic, every generation is getting a remake since Kalos references the other regions quite a lot.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Except, the other generations have already had their remakes. :P

      • DragKudo

        Not a 3ds Remake

        • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com/ SilverSpades

          Not neccessary

          • DragKudo

But a 3d remake of ruby IS?

          • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

            that sinnoh

          • DragKudo

            THANK YOU!!

          • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com/ SilverSpades

3D or not, it needs a remake. Every other generation has had their chance, except the Hoenn region games.

If it’s in 3D, that’s swell– icing on the cake. If not, oh well.

Why does a game re-released already on another platform have to be re-re-released AGAIN on another? Not neccessary. Downvote me all you want.

          • DragKudo

            1. I was joking about 3ds remakes
            2. ruby/sa/em were the next generation they were on the gameboy advances andthey were compatible with the future games. red & gold had to get remakes because they were the oldest in the series and you couldn’t get all of the pokemon from fire red in ruby unless you had fire red. Ruby does not need a remake. How would you feel if they were too remake odiamond and black on the 3ds or whatever handheld system is next in line?

  • Godman

I loved these references to Gen 3, I got every one of them lol

  • https://twitter.com/RaiohV Raioh

Oh god a remake of Ruby and Sapphire in YX style(preferably even enhanced) would be so good~! Still my favorite gen~

    • Chris Evan Jonance Ingeniero

imagine ruby and saphire in Pokemon XY graphics :3

  • Jesse

    I’ll believe it when I see it. ^^;

  • MrRobbyM

It’s bound to happen eventually, teases or not.

  • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

Underground Ruby and Deep Sea Sapphire.
3rd gen is going to have a remake sooner or later. and when it happens all of my pokemon hype will be on a extreme hype level because Ruby was my first pokemon game and i freaking loved it

    • Miss_Madness

I’d go with Rumble Ruby and Shimmering Sapphire. Sapphire was my first I have so much love for it.

also I it looks like someone really hates R/S/G in the comments

      • Musashi234

OR Rocking Ruby and Spectacular Sapphire :3!!!!

        • Rudi Adkins II

Or Magma Ruby and Marine Sapphire

    • Guest

I’d like the feature from Diamond, Pearl and Platinum to make a return where you can enter those mines and dig for stuff

  • RazeXI

I think I would’ve rather have preferred a new battle frontier in X and Y then a remake of the Hoenn saga. although following the formula at what rate these remakes are coming out it does seem likely.that the Hoenn remake will be in pretty 3D graphics

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

My favorite Gen….hype train is coming

  • Rogerrmark

Any doubt about it?All other gens had too.
I hope gen 4 doesnt have one one, though, doesnt need it.

Unless they reboot the series again, like original Ruby/Sapphire,making a game that doesnt connect with previous to eliminate all the gameshark/hacked Pokemons. That would appear eventually again.

  • Lynx

    -teasing

Its pretty blunt, I’d say. Its not like DPPt being similar to Johto but never hinting at remakes.

  • James Enk

    an expansion would be better

  • Reindeer

The Backpacker outright mentions it’s not in Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh or Unova (or Kalos, for that matter). So that’s definitely not a hint to a Gen 3 remake.

    • KuroNathan

      Pokemon Colosseum remake

  • AxionAzure

I consider RSE the less interesting generation, followed closely by the generation V. I think it’s too early to comment on the generation VI of Pokémon, but I feel like I’m unable to like them as much as Generations I, II and IV. Still, Pokémon is Pokémon, as much as I may not like them as much, I’m still unable to dislike them.

  • Vash bane

I remember two years ago ppl had been asking about this. so im guessing this is a hint to whats to become im not hyped at all honestly since those two games weren’t what started my pokemon adventure but for those that is I can see why those two hold a special part in there hearts :p

I just hope one day in the future that they bring back the pokemon follow you mechanic back :p(makes that first slot pokemon feel all so special :D)

  • C_Diamond

    oh really?

    • jugss

      Orange Island confirmed!!!!

    • Rasputing

The region is Orre, the facility is that big tower where the final battle happens. Calling it now.

    • RisukuAozora

Does one consider the Sevii Islands as a part of Kanto?

    • Punny Fuzz

      Ransei?

  • Ponsay

The Kalos Champion theme also has the Hoenn Gym Battle theme in it.

    Starts around 1:06

  • Seraph

[sarcasm]Will we get a remake of Fire Red/Leaf Green too?[/sarcasm]

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

Not sure if I’m excited about this.

  • 3PointDecoupage

The new 3D graphics have made me realize how aweful some pokemon were designed, particularly the 3rd gen. I’d rather have another HG remake or something new even if there arent any new pokemon.

  • Musashi234

Idk why i still Think Pokemon Platinum is the best Enhanced Pokemon Adventure EVER!!!! Just something about it keeps me coming back for more.

  • Masa

why another remake? why not just use that time and resources to make another awesome game like XX and Y. :)

  • Will Jay

The second image is nothing related to Hoenn. If you finish the sidequest, you get an item related to a region completely separate from any of the past ones, and while there’s no use for it yet, the game stresses not to sell it off or toss it haphazardly. If anything, that one is implying either X2/Y2 or a Little Battlers eXperience W style major patch with more story content. Only way bigger.

disregarding the countless references to every region in the first place

    • Steven Higgins

Nah. It’s gotta be Z. The third Legendarys name starts with Z. Z is also an ‘International letter” Like X and Y and one of the 3D axises. Axisis? Axi? Well whatever the plural is. No, I’m pretty sire they’re going back to the original formula.

      • Will Jay

Yeah, and there was TOTALLY gonna be Pokemon Grey.

        • Steven Higgins

I get that, but look at all the hints. It was confirmed that they chose X and Y for the title because they are international letters, Z is an international letter as well. While never confirmed that it was part of the reasoning, X and Y are two of the 3D axises so Z would make more sense than another pair of sequels. Yeah, they tried something new with B2/W2, It doesn’t mean that they are going to repeat it for all future generations. With Gen V all we had to go on was past experience, here we have at least one actual clue.

  • Gyro Zeppeli

I dunno about this, 1st and 2nd gen kinda needed remakes because there was no way to connect them to the GBA and DS games otherwise. But now even Pokes from the 3rd generation can be brought to the current one thanks to Pal Park and Poke Transporter, so I’m not sure if 3rd gen remakes would be needed.

  • VenerableSage

I’m just going to say exactly what I said when Kotaku posted this same farfetched article:

This is more of a stretch than Mr. Fantastic. Just because they make a reference to something doesn’t mean that it’s a herald of things to come. Haven’t you ever heard of lore or easter eggs?

I’ll give you an extremely easy reason why there won’t be a remake of Ruby and Sapphire – the timeline. Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald take place during the same time period as FireRed and LeafGreen. HeartGold, SoulSilver, Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum all take place 3 years after those games. Black and White take place an additional number of years after that. Black 2 and White 2 take place another 2 years after those. So, up through the end of B2/W2, at least 6-7 years have elapsed.

Now, I don’t have my copy of X yet (should be arriving soon), though I
would assume that it takes place after B2 and W2 in the timeline, or,
minimally, concurrently. Nintendo’s not dumb, so they would want any
newer games to remain as compatible as possible with the other current
titles. They haven’t made use of the Time Capsule concept since the
advancement of the series to the GBA, so it would seem that time travel
isn’t going to fly with them any longer. (Pal Park could be assumed to
be that you’re just catching “another trainer’s” released Pokemon in a
    preserve.)

As such, a remake would then have the most recent point of the
timeline suddenly fall in line with something 6+ years prior. Now, what I
could see happening is a REVISITING of Ruby and Sapphire, set __ years
later – the same world, albeit with changes to the landscape over time,
possibly some Gym Leader changes, and a different plot.

    • Tyler Harwood Simpson

Who cares about the timeline? Out of the general Pokemon audience, who cares?

While I do like the idea of re-visiting Hoenn, the timeline argument still is relatively weak when it comes to making a marketable game.

      • VenerableSage

The general audience might not care, but it’s obvious that Game Freak cares about it, if only marginally, since they keep stating the time frame in between games. If they didn’t care at all, then I don’t see why they’d even bother wasting the brain cells to formulate the thought in the first place.

    • http://terracannon876.livejournal.com Laura

So, technically they already went back in time to create HGSS because Gold/Silver came out before RSE but takes place 3 years later, if your timeline is correct.

Where is a source for this timeline, btw? I’m interested in seeing.

      • VenerableSage

The remakes replace their predecessors in the timeline. Originally, RSE and RBY were set at the same time, with only GSC taking place years later. When FRLG were made, they retcon’d RBY out of the timeline, replacing them. DPPt came out next, set in the same year as GSC. When HGSS were developed, they replaced GSC.

There is no direct time travel involved – RSE/FRLG transfers up to Gen IV (“forward in time” 3 years) via the Pal Park – the Time Capsule isn’t involved at all.

As for a source, several of the timeline’s points are directly referenced in-game, such as the events in Johto in HGSS taking place 3 years after the fall of Team Rocket in Kanto (FRLG). Bulbapedia has a page – http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/History_of_the_Pok%C3%A9mon_world#Timeline – which lists the timeline, though they admit that there’s an element of speculation to connecting the dots. This is mostly due to the fact that Nintendo/Game Freak haven’t officially confirmed anything, despite the large number of coincidences that would seem to link things in parallel. (Sinnoh and Johto sharing a Battle Frontier setup, Cynthia appearing in the Sinjoh Ruins, having to link up the two computer systems in Kanto/Sevii and Hoenn, etc.)

  • http://shadious.tumblr.com/ Vince

It’ll be nice to whoop Team Magma and Team Aqua’s butts again, though for those who played the original games.

But for those who Gen 3(?) games, the remakes could be a good opportunity. :)

  • Kami nii

If I were them they should make a game that can visit all regions for example like Gold and Silver I mean battle all gym leaders, elite 4 and different champions by then we can call ourselves pokemon masters I mean who wouldn’t want that its been my dream on pokemon to be able to freely visit all the regions but that is just a wishful thinking on my part but I want it to happen!!! :)

  • http://radiantloki.blogspot.com/ Mark Dinh

I would hands down buy a remake of Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald.

  • Shadow Bloodedge

Considering that Gen V took place after Gen IV and Gen II, which both took place after Gen III and Gen I, and Gen VI implies it occurs after Gen V, I doubt there’s gonna be a Ruby or Sapphire remake…but then again, since Black 2 and White 2 occur after Black and White, that casts doubt on my doubt.
I invoke the old saying “Only God Knows”–to mean that only TPC can truly say if there will or won’t be.
It’s alright to like a region–just don’t be fanatical about it. I personally didn’t like LeafGreen, and SoulSilver actually ran slower than Platinum to me, so I’ll be content if never more be the remakes come.

I’ll just stick to Kalos–it may run slightly slower than Unova, but it sure looks nice–AND I can freely change my look as I see fit!

  • Shane Guidaboni

All I want to know is, when are they going to give us that horse racing/solitaire game?

  • leingod

They should make a full-fledged Pokemon game for Wii U…. remake or not. That’d spike the console’s sales for sure.

  • http://yaminoseigi.blogspot.com/ Yami no Seigi

Hope the R/S remake will clear the bad aftertaste of Pokemon X/Y which really feels half-finished.

  • komiko12

I would prefer a sequel myself.

  • JustThisOne

I think a remake will happen eventually, but I don’t know if any of this is “teasing.” Pokemon games have made various hat tips to the other games before.

  • Kalis Konig

I am honestly disappointed that the fanbase constantly asks for remakes when they could just be vocal about a sequel instead. Imagine if the next Pokemon game had both Kalos and Hoenn in it.

  • ArtIristic

Its been 10 years since Ruby and Sapphire? Man, I still remember when picking them up from the store….. The nostalgia is burning me!

  • ivanchu77

Last time i managed to get all the pokemon (200 or something this gen i think) such good memories :) (nowadays with +600… no thanks)

and holy shit, 10 years, i remember when i bought this and started playing instantly like it was yesterday, i swear, time passes way to fast :( , before i realize i will be a old man that will need a cane to walk

  • Asuna Ilano

Please a remake of Pokemon Red/Yellow first in XY’s graphics with Red as the male character and Yellow as the main Female character. Two of my favorite Pokemon Adventures Characters.

    • Steven Higgins

Sorry, If they did remake Gen 1 it would be based on the Gen III remakes so it would have Green/Leaf as the female.
They’ll never remake Yellow because if they were going to they would have done it in Gen III.

      • Asuna Ilano

Well wishful thinking. At least make a cameo appearance would do.

  • Andrew O’Toole

Thing is, that backpacker who talks about his region. If you talk to him in different hotels on different days, he reveals that his region is NOT Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh or Unova. And since he’s in Kalos, it’s not Kalos either. It’s a brand new region he’s talking about.

  • Fahd Al Zarooni

Can’t wait for the real annoucement, Hoen is my favourite region of all next to Sinnoh & Kalos, Unova was ok.
