Nomura Talks New Worlds And AI Improvements In Kingdom Hearts III

By Sato . October 16, 2013 . 1:25pm

Earlier this week, Square Enix gave us another glimpse at Kingdom Hearts III with new gameplay footage that was shown at Disney’s D23 Expo. In Sony’s latest installment of their Creator’s Interview series, series director Tetsuya Nomura talks about the upcoming game.

Nomura starts out by introducing Kingdom Hearts III as the conclusion of the “Dark Seeker” saga, which has continued for the past ten years. He then talks about the game’s action and how it will differ from previous games in the series.

“The action of Kingdom Hearts continues to evolve, and this time, Kingdom Hearts III will also integrate the ‘Free Run’ [system] that makes it possible to run and climb various areas. Additionally, the ability to fly and jump will be seeing a much greater improvement this time around,” says Nomura. “I believe that thanks to the PlayStation 4, it has been made possible to fight even more enemies in spacious areas.”

“One of the graphic themes for this installment, is how we could represent Disney’s 2D brush-style drawings into 3D,” Nomura shares. “After consulting with our company’s pre-rendering section, called Visual Works, we were able to create various patterns of expression for demo purposes, and we were able to get what you see today.”

“In the Kingdom Hearts series, the protagonist Sora travels alongside the Disney characters Donald and Goofy,” Nomura continues in the video. “When it comes to character personalities, it’s something that Disney characters have already well established, so a part of us wishes to see them act more on their own thoughts. So this time, in terms of AI, Donald and Goofy will be acting more upon their own thoughts in various situations, while better reflecting their own personalities. I believe that you’ll feel a major step-up from past Kingdom Hearts games up until now.”

Many of us have wondered what kind of worlds we’ll be seeing in Kingdom Hearts III. While Nomura doesn’t get into specifics, he adds a little fuel the speculation fire.

“We finished deciding on some of the worlds, and started working on them,” says Nomura. “The characters and worlds that appeared in the series up until now will be changing in appearances; however, there will be many more new worlds. There will be a large quantity of Disney works that have yet to appear in the series.”

Nomura then moves on to the subject of working on the PlayStation 4. (Note that this is from a talk posted on a Sony website.)

“There’s so much you can do with the PlayStation 4, and the more the power of expression increases, the more possibilities that leaves us with,” Nomura offers. “When we’re given such great hardware, us creators would assuredly want to make something just as great. We’ve had various hardware up until now, but I feel that this will be the tallest mountain to overcome, in the best way possible.”

Nomura concludes, “When you take all the past titles into consideration, and their own representations, I believe that [Kingdom Hearts] has become a game [series] of profound depth. We are working hard on development so the day you all will get to play [Kingdom Hearts III] will come sooner. Please look forward to our next announcement.”

Kingdom Hearts III is currently in development for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Hmmmm I wonder if any of those new worlds will be Star Wars.

    • Sesshomaru

Wouldn’t be surprised. A lightsabre keyblade

    • NightzeroAX

Since Star Wars is pretty much the Light Side vs. Dark Side its possible.

    • RichyGaming

Tetsuya Nomura wanted to do something with Star Wars so it’s possible.

      • DragKudo

He said it was nearly impossible though. And that he would think about it for future titles.

        • Samuel Giam

If Tetsuya Nomura wants to do something with Star Wars being in Kingdom Hearts, he should do it now with KH III because Disney and LucasFilm are planning Episode VII where the film’s story can be used for future KH handheld games.

Also Nomura have stories of six episodes of films that can give him a headache if he dare give us and the Vita/3DS the same headache by squeezing all six stories into one Star Wars world for a future handheld KH game.

  • IS | 桂木

    Nomura’s a god among men, can’t wait for KH3

    • Leon_Tekashi

I would say he’s one of them, like Keiji Inafune.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

He’s more like Tameem. Dat Twewy got that punk.

        • hazelnut1112

Ew, don’t compare Nomura to Tameem. That bald prick is terrible.

          • hazelnut1112

            Yeah, that guy.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Well tell Nomura to get bettuh fans.

          • Bentan

i see what u did there, both makes characters that kinda resemble themself

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            Team Ninja sucks.
I swear to god their games would be worse from an action game standpoint if their employers didnt keep them on a tight leash. And as artists? Well every plot they write stinks, and their whole direction with DmC was pitiful imo. What are we counting now eh, series been rebooted like 3 times now?

          • TalesLaw

Isn’t it too late to hate on them? Can you do a better job? Guess not

  • Jonathan Tse

oh man, more mobility? sounds good to me.

  • Lloyd Christmas

I can’t express how nice it is to finally hear more concrete information regarding KH3. I feel like I’m ten years old again.

  • Revorse

I’m interested in this new AI that Nomura is talking about. How exactly are they going to reflect personalities? Like if Donald keeps whiffing attacks is he gonna get pissed off and start flinging fire everywhere?

  • NightzeroAX

I wonder what other Pixar world would fit into Kingdom Hearts. The only obvious one I could think of is Toy Story.

    • ElAbuelo69

      Monsters Inc?

      • NightzeroAX

Hm that and the Incredibles seem legit.

    • hazelnut1112

As long as we don’t get anything involving Cars then we’re fine.

      • hawk222

Lightning McQueen summon! Vehicular manslaughter– I mean, “Heartless-slaughter.”

    • Sato

      WALL-E! :D
Little robot Sora, Donald and Goofy would be awesome haha

    • Ixbran

Brave could easily be in the KH series, its a fairy-tale esq setting like a lot of the other worlds in the KH series.

  • ElAbuelo69

Why praise the PS4 when you’re doing the same thing for XboxOne as well? Traitor.

    • MellowMadman11

It was already stated that this was a talk posted on Sony’s website, so it makes sense that Nomura is talking about ps4.

      • ElAbuelo69

Yeah but it’s a fake praise. Whatever he’s doing or praising about the PS4…the XboxOne will be able to do it too…

        • Ferrick

i’m just going to sit here laughing as i look at the specs on both machines

          • Arcana Wiz

i’m gonna sit here laughing cause we wont see the diference of specs until the end of the console lifetime, where finally the devs will be able to use the consoles to the max, like with almost every console…. points to FFVII and FFXI. points to first ps2 games and then GOW2, points to uncharted 1 and Last of Us…

          • Ferrick

true, by the time both are used to the fullest, we’d probably have ads about PS5 and Xbox2

  • Mental

    Personality-based AI?
I think that peaks my interest more than the information about new worlds.

    • Goofy being even more disastrously clumsy, and Donald being worse than Popeye in a Bar Fight?

      • hawk222

“Donald, I’m at full health! If you heal me any more, you’re going to start depleting my HP, and I’m not even sure how that’s possible!!”

        • Nice Boat Quatro

          Sora: A giant Heartless appeared!
Goofy: Gorsh, I think we better get out of here!
          Donald: I leave first!
Sora: Come on guys we can’t give u—Guys?

  • Dylan Neill

Does this mean that Donald and Goofy won’t be using their items like hyperactive children when they get so much as a scratch?

  • greeeed

Why do I feel that they will add Star War world in KH-III?

    • I bet the fandom might be divided to this; Half applause and half-raging.

  • So… Toy Story seems a near confirmation with the LGMs mentioned in a previous news about KH3.

  • Vesperion

I love how Siliconera always notes that these interviews are taken from a Sony site. Let’s help keep the console fanboys under control.

  • Demeanor

Just give me cool moves like the Ultimate Form in KH2. Also, make the damn summons USEFUL this time around :P
Am I the only one who’d like to see some FF summons instead of Disney ones? :D how cool would it be to have a Bahamut pal laying waste to everything while you are fighting mobs? :D

    • Göran Isacson

They actually did plan to have a Bahamut summon in the first game, but they replaced him with Mushu. Come this game, well… maybe it’s finally his time to shine?

  • killerskills

I’m so pissed off at nomura for releasing it on xbone. you betrayed
Sony, you betrayed the fans and you’ve ruined KHIII. XBONE doesn’t
deserve games like this. Xbone will weigh the game down with its
inferior hardware. Kingdom Hearts belongs on playstation! We need to
rise up and tell Square-Enix we don’t want this game on XBONE!

    • MasterScrub

Yeah because literally everyone who chose the Xbox One over the PS4 couldn’t possibly enjoy KH right

      • Anon-non

As I said in another comment, personally I want exclusives games not because I’m a die-hard fanboy, but I feel like developers can make better games if they took full advantage of one hardware, rather than making compromises in order for games to work on both.

        • What “full advantage”? Both Xbox One and PS4 are based on PC architecture to the point where you have industry vets like John Carmack saying they’re nearly identical. Games can be made to be scaleable. However, in terms of differences, there’s barely any architectural difference here. This is the most standardized pair of consoles the industry has ever seen.

          • Anon-non

Yeap, you’re right. The differences right now are minimal, so I can’t complain too much. But they weren’t a while ago though. I guess I should have clarified that this would have been a bigger issue for me for current gen and gens past than it is for next gen. Though I’ll also have to admit, while I consider Wii U as next gen, I would have an issue if they tried to develop KH3 with the Wii U in mind as well.

          • malek86

I don’t see why. The Wii U version would probably be developed separately, since it can’t use the same architecture and effects of the X4 versions.

Anyway, I thought the general idea was that graphics don’t really matter as long as the game is good.

    • Are you basically saying people who doesn’t own a Sony Playstation 4 doesn’t deserve to play your glorious games? Are you fucking kidding me?

Let me refresh your mind, think about where Square Enix first started off then think about how dumb you sound. So this whole betrayal rubbish is nothing but you fanboying over a stupid console. If Square Enix want to expand their audience then let them. What they don’t need is YOUR superior opinions in the matter.

    • Flamboyant Ass Nigga

Fool be quiet, both console shall be good in their own way.

    • RichyGaming

Aside from everyone throwing insults at ya, I’m more of a Sony person, myself. But it’d be cool that the Xbox One would have KH3 as well. I’d rather have more Kingdom Hearts players than just an exclusive. Fighting games with online multiplayer in general are a different story though, unless cross-play is involved.

  • mojack411

Whoa whoa whoa whoa WHOA. Hold on here a minute. KH3 is the conclusion of the “Dark Seeker” saga? Not the entire series? Does that mean there’s going to be another whole new saga after that? Let’s back up a moment, I love the Kingdom Hearts series and can’t wait for KH3, but I was looking forward to this being the definitive end to the series’ winding story line. Prequels aside, I really think continuing on after this game is just too much. Please just let the series end conclusively and decisively.

the conclusion of the “Dark Seeker” saga

    • Ferrick

i do recall nomura mentioning that kh3 will be the end of xehanort arc, and will continue on as sora afterwards

    • Arcana Wiz

yup only of the dark seeker saga, AKA as Xenahort Saga, after they end it… they will continue with KH, with Sora… Again.
I wouldn’t mind they continuing to relase KH games, but i think that they should do something like atelier sagas, they have the concepts, but the story takes place on another and time (it would be good to see the keyblade wars or a main character of the dark realm, which wasn’t explored in KH games yet.)

      • ShadowDivz

I don’t know about atelier sagas but if it were like Atelier games like gust that would be cool.

        Similar concept, different characters.

As long as the story isn’t on like 4different platforms with some fucked up timeline(AGAIN) it should be good.
I love the series, but let’s be honest. Shit’s hard to follow.

      • s07195

If they continue with Sora… It might become a bit like how Ash is in the anime Pokemon… With old fans tired of the same character.

  • Flamboyant Ass Nigga

I wonder if this shall provide good entertainment.

  • anthony apduhan

This will the end the Dark Seeker Saga? But I thought this will end the Xehanort Saga? I’m confused!

    • Ferrick

xehanort the dark seeker, so yes, it’s both

  • JoJo_649

A Wreck it Ralph world would be awesome, and what about some crazy secret bosses like Darth Vader and Deadpool?

    • hawk222

And Kefka! Lots of people have voiced their interest in battling him!

      • JoJo_649

If you lose against him , you should clean the sand in his boots xD

  • Heropon

Gambit is the best method to improve AI of Character , player can freely modified whatever they want but look like SE forgot about that great invention

    • hawk222

They had it as far back as KH1, and it was a main feature in FF12, but then it seemed to just disappear…

  • Sardorim

Still want a playable segment of Riku, Kairi, Lea, and Aqua alongside playable Sora.

  • AkiraScare

I hope its has costumes like lighting return (^_^) i want sora in the Nightmare before Christmas costume …

  • Nitraion

I wonder why he only talks about PS4..
and for everyone says he is traitor because KH III will be on Xbone…
as far i remember SE needs money and maybe they need to wider fanbase..
    its their strategy

    • Guest

I want exclusives games not because I’m a die-hard fanboy, but I feel like developers can make better games if they took full advantage of one hardware, rather than making compromises in order for games to work on both.

  • Nice Boat Quatro

Sora with Eraqus’ armor! Sora with Eraqus’ armor! Sora with Eraqus’ armor!

    • James Todd

      i second that

  • ShadowDivz

    Please be excited!

    • Nitraion

      it never get old

  • Anon-non

People don’t seem to understand that exclusivity extends beyond fanboyism. Beyond the stupid caps lock yelling and bad grammar, I can somehow relate. As I said in another comment, I want exclusives games not because I’m a die-hard fanboy, but I feel like developers can make better games if they took full advantage of one hardware, rather than making compromises in order for games to work on both. Unless the PS4 and X1 are 100% similar in hardware, I fully vouch for exclusive games. I’ll buy both consoles if I have to.

    • Nitraion

hmm i’m used to think same way…
but how about something like watch dog case?
wiiU version has map on their tab or batman wiiU version?
well he talks more about PS4 maybe PS4 version will be more richer experience…
PS4 and Xbox one is not that far off IMO… besides it’s just their thing if it is flop and fail then maybe they are more focused on sony platform

      • well he talks more about PS4 maybe PS4 version will be more richer experience…

The interview is from a Sony website, which is why he only talks about PS4. We mentioned that in our write-up.

        • Nitraion

Well what i mean is the WiiU have tab contorler it can be used as map or item inventory depending on developer…
so even same game with multiplatform … it will be diffrent experience or feel richer….
same as PS4 with their controller or Xbone with their kinect….. same game different experience ….
somewhat may be feeling game more richer than other platform

          • I wouldn’t take his talking only about PS4 as any sort of indication of it being a better game on that platform. As we said, the interview is from a Sony-affiliated site, so it’s natural that they would want him to evangelize the PS4.

For all you know, they’ll opt to include some kind of crazy Kinect functionality in the XB1 version, which could make that version more interesting. Or perhaps do something with the PS4 touchpad that differentiates that version somehow.

Basically, it’s too early to say.

  • Bentan

    parkour? day one purchase now

  • Ban The Jackass

    Please add Toy Story!

  • Niermyico

If they add Treasure Planet. Oh man.

  • Göran Isacson

Holy hell, they include the Free Run from DDD… AND improve the partner AI? OH Nomura, keep talking sweet little promises to me and you’ll have my wallet in the palm of your hand.

  • Ric Vazquez

This better be on grand masterpiece when it comes out Nomura!
