Pokémon X and Y Have A Serious Bug In Lumiose City. Here’s What You Can Do.

By Ishaan . October 20, 2013 . 9:30am

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y have a bug that appears to make the games’ controls unresponsive after saving in certain areas within Lumiose City. Nintendo say they’re aware of the situation, and that Game Freak are working on a patch that will be released “as soon as it is ready,” but in the meantime, they’ve pointed out what you can do to avoid the problem. Below is their full message, from their support site:

Information regarding saving game data in Lumiose City in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y.

Thank you very much for playing and enjoying the Pokémon series.

An issue has been found with the Pokémon X and Pokémon Y games, released for Nintendo 3DS on October 12, 2013. After the player saves the game in certain areas and then reloads the save file, the controls may become unresponsive.

Please follow the instructions below in order to avoid this issue.

For players who are already experiencing this issue, please be aware that we are currently preparing an application to fix it, and will make it available to download from Nintendo eShop as soon as it is ready. We apologize for the inconvenience.

The Issue

In some rare cases, if the player saves the game in certain areas of Lumiose City (see below map), then ends the game, the controls will not respond when the saved game is reloaded.

How to Avoid This

Please make sure you don’t save the game while in the areas marked on the map below (blue area). You can still save the game anywhere else in Lumiose City, including inside buildings such as Pokémon Centers.

Solution for Players Already Experiencing this Issue

We are preparing an application to recover saved game data for players whom this has happened to. This will be made available to download from Nintendo eShop as soon as possible.

We apologize sincerely for any inconvenience and ask you to please keep an eye on our website over the coming days for the latest information and updates.

We’ll keep our eyes open for any announcements regarding when a patch will be released to address the bug. Meanwhile, it’s probably a good idea to make your friends aware of the issue. Considering the amount of players playing X and Y just this past week alone means that the bug is likely to pop up in quite a few games.

Ah, the prize of everything being beautiful…

  • benhofb

I have a feeling a bug on this scale happened just because of how big Lumiose city is… I really do hope this gets fixed though. I have yet to encounter the issue myself (thankfully), but for those who have it must really blow.

  • konsama

It would be perfect if they also add a damn emoticon system or something for online trades.

It’s ridiculous the game connect the whole world allowing for trades and stuff at press of a button with anyone, yet is basically babel tower, with no way to communicate in trades, BW2 had pulled it perfectly with emoticons, yet XY has no way to communicate to the other player that you want or not what they are offering and vice versa.

And yes, the game got audio chat, but im 100% sure not everyone will use it, especially when you can only use with friends and not everyone is english speaker, picture trying to talk with a japanese or russian guy when your native tongue is spanish. Yet EVERYONE understands emoticons or even premade messages that would be auto translated to whatever language the other player got.

Instead we’re stuck with trading in the dark when a random passerby or even friends ask you for a trade without being in contact with a message board or forum, is totally frustrating, and i’ve quit lots of trades just because of that at the risk of looking rude or a douche.

    • jugss

how do you voice chat? mine says parental thingy but I did not set a parental code.

      • konsama

You can only use voice chat with friends but not acquaintances nor passerby, it prompts you to use or not if you enabled the option on the PSS settings and can turn off the same way, tho i have no idea why it blocked you with parental code, i haven’t set up either and never asked me for it.

    • Shadow Bloodedge

Hmm…unless your system has a lock on extended communications (which DOES cover Voice and Video chat for any who’s interested), I don’t see how that’s not going through.

To answer why X and Y don’t yet have a way to communicate interest or disgust? I’ve seen people on my Black 2 abuse it to try and score a Legendary off me (my policy is don’t trade anything you don’t wanna lose forever, and it goes BOTH ways). While I understand that these are the initial pair, it kinda strikes me dumb that they didn’t include even this. They might make it part of Update Data, though, considering that they can do so now. They just needed the backbone of that system to work~

      • konsama

Well yeah GTS negotiations were a scamfest, that’s why you have to be on your head on what you want, get and offer.

But still, even with all that BS, communicating with tools from the game itself were a possibility, which was lost on this game.

I can’t help to think XY did some great leaps forward, but at same time many steps backwards. In many aspects.

        • Shadow Bloodedge

Understandable. FYI, Wonder Trade is completely random–you can get anything for anything, and you never know what’s coming or even where from until it’s too late. That’s the point of that. Does its job–loads of fun.

Though if they use Update Data to bring back icon contact, I’d just like two icons–Like and Dislike.

          • konsama

For your information, i never mentioned wonder trade, there’s THREE ways to trade, and from them you had to pick the one i wasn’t even addressing, epic job.

          • Shadow Bloodedge

Then again you failed to mention any kinda trade, so I just decided to tell you something that would relatively be worse than as you describe.
Epic job? Indeed–I show silver lining~ ^^ But yeah, it does seem off that only Friends can “Yay” or “Nay” with anything other than just hitting No.

  • Shadow Bloodedge

I shared the Japanese version of that same map with all my Facebook contacts and posted to everyone else to “stay the hell outta there when saving”. Considering my contacts reach global levels, I believe I’ve done just.

  • Momo

This is one reason why i like this generations of Video Games. With a bug as big like this, in the past it was either we had to buy another game (updated version) or ship our copy to said company and have them fix it usually resulting in a lost/wipe of save data.

Now something as simple as putting an update on the eshop and everything is hopefully fixed! Hopefully Nintendo can reslove this soon especially since the Holiday seasons are upon us and i know a whole bunch of people will be getting this game for Xmas (assuming they havent gotten it already) and it would be shame if this bug is still active till then!

    • Yes, but at the same time it can encourage things like this happening a lot more often because they know they can get away with a patch later on down the road which leads to rushing out the product and not testing it as much as they should.

The way I’ve always been taught when building up something is do it right the first time. Obviously, there’s going to be things you miss on a huge scale project such as this but at the same time you don’t want them to be this game-breaking, especially in something like a Pokemon title.

    • michel

Maybe, but twenty years ago, Nintendo would have never let a thing like this happen…

    • s07195

      Technology is amazing!

    • Why so many downvotes??

      • Brandonmkii

Because people think that this kind of stuff didn’t happen 20 years ago, and that only current gen video games are plagued by problems like this.

  • PreyMantis

That’s weird since I’ve saved multiple times in this city and never had a problem.

    • konsama

Same for me, i saved tons of times in lumiose before the glitch was made known, and my game never had a problem. And i heard from other people did the same.

    • Arrei

Yeah, for whatever reason, even though everyone’s games should be more or less identical barring a defective copy, it doesn’t seem to happen to everyone.

Even so, best not to tempt fate, yeah? It happens to physical and digital copies alike, so perhaps there’s some of additional trigger that some people are hitting which others aren’t.

    • Same. But I think the problem isn’t SAVING in Lumiose, but saving and then trying to START the game up in those areas of Lumiose. All of the videos I’ve seen are people trying to start their game up in those areas, not those who’ve saved once or twice in it and then moved on.

      • PreyMantis

I guess I should have said ‘saved and started multiple times in this city.’

      • knightr

they said it was more or less rare bug, I most likely saved there too multiple times as well and nothing happened. just be happy you didnt have to start a new game..

  • JMaster3000

Just to say that there is a workaround.
Once u load ur save press the Home button to go back into Home Menu.
Wait a little there and go back into the game, so simple.
The problem that the game has is little time for loading the textures and stuff, so going back to the home menu resolves it.

    • Margaret Chan

I think this has been the only workaround that I’ve heard of that hasn’t “not worked” for anyone who’s reported it from the threads I’ve read online. Except most of them say they have to mash it many times before it actually works.

  • Chaos_Knight

Huh. Good thing I didn’t pick up X earlier. I might as well get it sometime when the patch is out, just to be safe.

    • Vash bane

yeah I was just going to get a copy. so guess we’ll hold out for a while :)

  • knightr

I seriously find navigating through lumiose city annoying at times…
I got lost way too many times before I finally learned the whole place by memory..

The city is like a small maze. There should seriously be a little map on the bottom screen like GTA or other sandbox games

    • It’s especially annoying that I can’t really change the camera angle that easy. It’s like someone was out of their mind when they made this, especially on a bike. I’ll end up going into buildings I didn’t mean to.

      • JustThisOne

OH GOD, YES. THE CAMERA ANGLES. It’s something I didn’t expect to be a problem, but it’s especially awful in Lumiose.

        • jugss

I agree with you about the camera angles. I hate those damn trees blocking the view.

    • JustThisOne

Oh wait! I forgot to mention: There is a little minimap. It’s in the top left corner of the screen when you first enter an “area”, I think.

      • Noticed it since I entered Lumiose for the first time.

        Has not helped.

        Even a little.

    • Pockystix

I’m hoping pokemon Z/X2/Y2 adds an additional bottom screen feature of a full map for each area and town.

In the 2D games it wasn’t much of an issue, but in full 3D games it can be a bit jarring to not have some sort of map for guidance

Thankfully, NeoGaf has a nice map on it’s Official Thread now

    • Notquitesure?

Maybe to reflect the country itself, i can’t imagine Paris or any french city to be easily navigated

    • Psst… it’s an Alchemy Circle.

  • fireemblembeast

They still need to give us a fix for that FE Awakening bug where you have to reset the Japanese audio every time you reset the game… >_>

    • ffboi7

thats never going to happen D:

    • British_Otaku

It’s the subtle type of bug that you can live with, even if we have the technology to fix it now and we couldn’t solve that problem for Budokai Tenkaichi 1 (which also had some characters ALWAYS speak in Japanese in specific circumstances), it might not get sorted out ever. >_>

  • Otoya

Phew, lucky I am only playing mine on end of December. :)

  • AuraGuyChris

While they’re at it, can they include a patch for not forcing the damn roller skates on the circle pad? I know it’s kewl but crashing into walls just to speak with a person in Lumiose City is not funny (unless people make artworks of that) and running into grassy areas by accident is infuriating. I miss auto-run from HG/SS…
And another patch to let us see stat changes for Pokémon outside battles that get experience and level up! It’s wonderful they’re finally acknowledging the use of EV in this gen, but, WHAT’S THE POINT IF YOU CAN’T TELL HOW MUCH EACH STAT CHANGED? Why’d they get rid of that, too?

    • ffboi7

      I agree on both terms.

    • Chris Evan Jonance Ingeniero

._. you can see the graph of each stat in the super training. afaik~ the peak of each stat is 255. so you can base your calculations on that~
in the 1st place the EV training is a pen and paper note thing for each trainers. They gave usthe ability to monito how much each stat has progress. but dont get too lazy and ask for more than what you already have

  • NimbusStev

Gotta wonder how something like this made it through testing. This is the biggest city in the game, and ideally the one you’d spend the most time in!

Ah well, hopefully they get that patch out soon.

    • Chris Evan Jonance Ingeniero

its possible that ” Saving and Loading on different parts of the world” was not included in their testing list. (which right now should be on their top of the list for the future pokemon games after this issue)

    • Ben Sylvia

Well I personally spend the most time in uh… that town where you get Snorlax, checking my berries every hour and seeing if any gym leaders have decided to pop in to the Chateau.

    • Travis Frazier

Hey Steve! So what are the odds of running into you here =P

      • NimbusStev

Haha hello Travis. That’s an awesome coincidence. I get most of my gaming news here nowadays.

        • Travis Frazier

I’ve actually never even heard of this site before. I just heard of the glitch so I googled it and this was the first site :P

  • HyperDrive

this is going to ruin the worldwide releases now, cause if it wasn’t a worldwide release, they could have seen this. Might have been rushing and miss this. But I notice that it’s not affecting NA games cause I live in NY and got the game, nothing happen to me and I save there all the time.

    • Jettythesunfish

Yeah, this hasn’t happened to me either. And I’m in New York too.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I must be the one of the chosen ones, I saved there sometime to chance my hair, It never glitched, unless.. the ghost is the Glitch

    • Chris Evan Jonance Ingeniero

if its inside a building or inside the coridors that isnt marked BLUE on the map ^^ look at post… then you are safe

    • J_Joestar

i’ve saved there plenty of times too, but luckily i never left the game to reload (As i was having too much fun) so i don’t know if i would have had the issue show up or not.

  • Ben Sylvia

But what if the game IS responding, just not on a level that humans can understand?

  • WyattEpp

I’ve been waiting a long time for first-party Nintendo to acknowledge the possibility of patching bugs in their games. But a separate application to recover saves? Feels like they still haven’t really grasped the utility of this “internet” thing.

    • DenjinJ

Didn’t they make another recovery util for a Zelda bug a while ago?

Anyway, the separate application makes more sense because a patch must undergo much more thorough and stringent testing to ensure it doesn’t break anything else. Often in programming, when you squash one bug, several more may surface. A recovery utility lets them focus on one specific problem and apply a known good workaround to get players up and running again ASAP, which is the crucial thing. Once that’s dealt with, they can go on to make sure the problem doesn’t affect future players of the game.

      • WyattEpp

I suppose there’s that. The idea that they have a proper suite of unit tests and solid profiling is probably expecting too much, given that this made it through at all. (Not to mention all the slowdown.)

  • Misurino

Congratulations for the beta testing Nintendo.
Well I think is the first time for Nintendo, lately some game companies release new games full of bugs (Skyrim anyone? lol). They are so lucky that in 2013 you can fix everything with updates, patch and other apps by download. Still, I don’t like It this way. It’s like you buy a new game at full price and It’s not even tested, geez this make me a bit angry <_<"
Hope Nintendo will fix the problem soon btw.

    • Travis Frazier

This is nothing new. You think Skyrim was full of bugs? You should see Morrowind. And these bugs happen. . Do you have any idea how many bugs where in red and blue? Ever heard of Missingno? He wasn’t intentional.

If you think that because of a few bugs that they didn’t do any testing then you have no idea of what goes into software development.

      • Misurino

Of course I know Missigno (and it wasn’t the only non intentional error), I had so much fun discovering It in pokèmon red :P
But for Missigno you had to do “something” in order to find him. I don’t really remember everything, but I think it was talking to the old man who shows you how to catch pokèmon, then going to the safari zone, exit and jump for a lot. It wasn’t so easy, and it wasn’t something that appear randomly while playing.

You are right, even before there were tone of bugs in videogames, really old videogames as well. Since videogames are made by humans, bugs and errors will always be there. But there are errors and errors.
The problem in X and Y is different. This is a bug that occurs only by
saving in some area. And the bug isn’t something you can evitate (at least if you know that), It’s just saving
and restarting in that city… if you do that you are done :S Until
they release a patch or something of course.

Sorry, I’m not a professional programmer or developer, but for me a bug like this that freeze your game and can’t let you play is a bit serious.
I’m sure Nintendo know that and will try to find a solution as soon as possible.

        • Travis Frazier

It is serious and that’s why Game Freak is working hard to fix it quickly, but its not like this one bug slipping through means that they didn’t really test the game.

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

    Is Meowth in this one?

  • Linhua

… is it just my X, or is the 3D function Disabled purposely for Hoard Battles & Double Battles…?

… the only reason I can see this purposely being done is because the frame rate would drop even further than a one on one battle to the point that it’s unplayable .-.

    • Lynx

      It is.

I haven’t experienced many frame rate drops when using the 3D. What I have experienced however is the start of battle. To be particular, when trainers send out the Pokéballs. When they exactly open up.

I can see it being in worse in case of double/triple/ rotation battles.

      • Linhua

… okay I dunno what my friend was talking about… lol… he sounded SO sure of himself that ALL battles were 3D that I began to question my own self what I saw… XD

  • katamari damacy

I’m disappointed. I thought they found another missingno dupe glitch.

  • harmonyworld

I never ran into this issue, but I have heard of it.
I made sure I wasn’t even in that city before saving after hearing about it.

  • Elizabeth ‘Ely’ Moreno

And this is how a lot of creepypastas about Lumiose City were born (and bonus points if it includes the ghost).

  • Enzo

For some reason, I never really did spend much time in Lumiose City, probably because it was so huge, you’d easily get lost, the camera angles were bad and it was sooo tedious to go around, and all the buildings looked identical. The only time I went around was to get the Hatching O-Power but anyways, hope the Patch comes out ASAP, some guys are missing out
